Past Times

Great news in this bleak, miserable time (I am talking about the pathetic August weather we're having to cope with in London, grey skies, drizzling rain and a chill in the air you need a coat to keep out, and oh yeah, Stargate has been cancelled), I found out yesterday that Earthgrazer is working in the building next door for two weeks on a consultancy. Yay. Lunch each day will be in order, I think. Today a trip to Panet Organic is very much on the cards. Last time I ate there was with Ali, and she had her drink filmed by the BBC for a segment on healthy drinks. Perhaps today my drink might make it on to national television?

Yesterday EG And I talked about how rubbish we were as friends (well actually about how rubbish I am - I missed Mags birthday this year and still feel awful about that), and we reminisced about the 'old' times, back when GateWorld was this wonderful, carefree place full of fun and laughter. Ooops no, I'm getting confused with all the 'GateWorld used to be this wonderful place and now it's all been ruined by XYZ and mods who stomp etc etc' posts. Actually, there was a time when GateWorld, and the entire fandom it seemed, was quite a horrible place to be. At the time we had a thread on GateWorld called the Daniel Shrine, and heaven forbid we Daniel fans dare mention Daniel outside that thread. We'd get told we had 'our' thread, and we should stay there and not inflict our views on the rest of the fandom because by doing so we were ruining their enjoyment of Stargate etc etc.

Frankly, if I came into the fandom in the last two years, I'd find tales like that hard to believe. Could you really be so marginalised by your devotion to Daniel or to ship, to the point that one side or the other couldn't even bear to see a person from the other side actually posting? Did people really behave that way?!

It would, I know, horrify shippers and Daniel fans on GateWorld now, many of whom are actually the same person. Why on earth would you have to 'hate' Daniel just because you were a shipper? And why would a fan of Daniel, and/or slash, have to hate shippers? In fact you can find as many shippers in the Daniel threads as there are Daniel fans in the shipper threads. All having fun. Yay for us!

You're giving me flashbacks. Thanks. ;)

Actually when I saw the news and then saw the death threats, profanity, and general hositility around the forum that needed, and still needs, to be cleaned up the first thing I thought was that it felt an awful lot like season 6 all over again.

I remember what you talk about Gips, I can remember very clearly the flak I got as a shipper from people saying things like "How can you be a Daniel fan and be a shipper at the same time when your ship takes away from his storyline/character" and things of that ilk. I know that it was just as bad for you but from shippers. Right now it feels around the forum a lot like how it felt when it was announced the Michael Shanks was leaving. An air of hysteria, anger, and people trying to do all that they can do to save the show. People who have been happy with show and it's changes are so angry at people that haven't been. There's blame being placed and people being told that their opinions are wrong. Sigh.

Hey you,

It does have the feel of the Daniel/shippers war doesn't it. I don't get it. I never did. Like Shipperahoy, I got a lot of flak for not taking sides and lambasting the Daniel fans. While I wasn't all torn up to see him go, I understood that some were, and I felt sorry for them. And of course, I didn't hate Daniel, which was a real no no if you were a shipper. I almost thought I'd be required to turn in my shipper card.

I really hope people sit back soon and take a deep, deep breath and remember that "this too shall pass".

Oh my THE DANIEL SHRINE!! That brings back happy memories. : )

In the midst of this Daniel/Shipper war, my first friend outside the shrine was a Shipper. She popped into the shrine to see what was going on. We chatted. I then started to pop into the Jack Thread to see her every now and then. Altho I never became a shipper and she didn't become a Daniel fan, we did become friends. It has been four years now. To think people thought we couldn't be friends.

I agree with Katg, I hope that people will just take a deep breath and relax. I love the show!!! I will miss it lots but all good TV shows do come to an end.

ScaryM - I too met some wonderful people through the Daniel Shrine.

Mal - I wasn't meaning to leave it so long between posts. Real life intervened! I will try to make sure that I post every few days in future. There's nothing worse than a blog that just sits there with no new posts. I don't think Darren would be happy if I did that too often!

Please tell Earthgrazer I said hi! Being just as rubbish a friend as you I haven't talked to her in ages and feel so bad about it!

I'm just as much a rubbish friend as Feli... and I guess the 2 weeks are up now so you can't even pass on wet, sloppy Clanger kisses to EG.

*wah*

I must admit that I'm pretty glad I'm not a mod now - I don't think I could take it (having to be restrained, I mean)
