Happy July 4th

- to all of our American fans and those celebrating with them.

Well, it seems that I'm able to work on pretty much every Stargatge outline being written except my own. Before leaving for hiatus, I was able to come up with an idea for Carl's "Michael" story (formerly the "Charlie" story). If Carl's past scripts are any indication, this one is going to be fantastic. I was also able to make some suggestions for Damian's "Long Goodbye" outline. This one will be a lot of fun and will offer Tori the rare opportunity to kick some major butt. I'm loving Martin's "Return of the Genii" story. I don't know if the C story I suggested is going to fly, but it would be fun to get inside Radek's head and explore a bit of his past. Just sent off suggestions for Paul's "The Tower" story. This one is going to be another good one plenty of twists and turns in the A, B, and C runners. Weir faces a major dilemma in her dealings with an interesting new ally. As for the "Off-World Ambassadors" story - well, I seem to be stuck in second gear. Once Martin and Paul's outlines are solid, I'll send them what I have so far and see if we can hammer something out. This story (which I've tentatively renamed "The Blight"), is far removed from the last one I wrote, "Ripple Effect", which was a blast to work on. Hopefully once it all comes together and its time for me to sit down and write it, I'll be equally inspired. I think the linchpin is the Chinese ambassador and once I can establish her arc and relationship with Daniel, the rest should fall into place.

I love t.v. on DVD. There is nothing like sitting down and watching an entire season, episode after episode, uninterrupted. Well, almost uninterrupted as I wait to conclude season 4 of The Shield. Okay, so its a far cry from Stargate but I recommend you guys go out and pick up season one on DVD. I watch some good shows (Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Deadwood) but The Shield is, in my humble opinion, the best-written show out there. Shawn Ryan and co. do a terrific job. I'm also watching the first season of Nip/Tuck with my wife. She loves it. Me...not so much. Am I the only one who finds all of the main characters incredibly unlikable? Well, if you do plan on checking out, I'd suggest you not do so over dinner. Some of the surgery scenes can be a little...appetite-suppressing.

On the anime front, I was watching Samurai 7 - only to realize I had only picked up 4 out of the 6 volumes. Great-looking show. I'm hooked. Now, if I can only ge the last two episodes. In the meantime, I've switched over to Chobits which is a fine series although I've yet to really see what all the fuss is about. Once I'm done, and provided I can't get my hands on volumes 5 and 6 of Samurai 7, Wolf's Rain and Paranoia Agent await on deck. By the way, I do check out your blog comments so if you anime-fans have any suggestions...

Planning to make a fresh batch of ice cream for Wednesday night. I was going to make praline with dark choclate and praline chunks but my wife ate the dark chocolat and praline chunks. In the future, I think I may have to hide my ingredients. I'm also toying with the idea of making a dark chocolate oatmeal ice cream. For those of you who like oatmeal, I recommend making a batch of steelcut Irish oatmeal. Its a thousand times better than that boxed instant oatmeal. Right. The first season of The Shield on DVD and a tin of steel-cut Irish oatmeal. Get back to me.

Almost forgot that it's a holiday in the States ;) Happy 4th of July. I had to work today, 4th of July isn't a holiday in Germany...

Concerning those animes: I'm not that much of a fan, but I pretty liked "Interstella 5555". It's kind of a musical - to be exact, there are NO spoken words, just the music of a french electronic band called "Daft Punk". All tracks are on their album "Discovery" too. If you find it anywhere, give it a look - maybe you like it, too.

oatmeal what on earth are you thinking youre out of your mind. the shield??? being the best written?? huh? did i read that right? (you're in denial stargate both series are way better than the shield) as for anime i don't like watching it i do draw some anime but i can't help you. the episodes look like they are falling into place for you which can only be good.

I find the characters on the Shield unlikable...so no accounting for taste... I admired the show, but I didn't enjoy it.

I do enjoy Nip/Tuck though. They lure you to watch with sallacious eye candy, and then zing the audience and their characters with tough lessons about vanity, soulless wealth, narcissism, oh and love. :D Christian and Sean go through some major character arcs. Season 1 was a bit uneven, but Season 2 will scare you with where things go. Craazy... Anyone even remotely considering plastic surgery should watch this show first!

6FU has been rather unlikable for me this season. When Billy is getting my sympathy, something is off track. Even a birthday talk from Dead Dad hasn't snapped Nate out of his mopes.

I'm still liking The Closer. It reminds me of why I liked Homicide - good mix of characters and good performances.

Definitely agree on the goodness of Irish oatmeal, though for me it's a winter breakies thing. Crunchy bars or Andie's thin mints are great in ice cream too.

I agree with Mr. Akbar. I'd recommend anything my Yoshitoshi Abe (i.e. Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain).

If you haven't seen Lain yet, give it a try. Just make sure you keep your brain in you noggin somehow it might try to escape.

Also, pick up Memories. Its an anime film in three parts that is just amazing.

Cowboy Bebop - that's a great anime series... also Trigun if you want to go for a laugh. As for movies, try Appleseed (it has REALY great visuals) and if you haven't watched it yet, Ghost in the Shell.

Oh, almost forgot, try the "Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex" Series (great title song on this one).

Well what do you expect if you leave dark chocolate and praline lying around? That is just wifely torture. Are you going to publish your ice cream recipes?

I'm not sold on Nip/Tuck either, I can't read/watch anything where I don't like the characters.

If you're looking for good quality, action-oriented anime currently our on R1 (I know I am), definately grab:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Last Exile
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop
Rurouni Kenshin OVAs (Trust/Betrayal)

While I've enjoyed countless other series, these are probably the best! Especially gits: SAC!

The Shield is great, really great, but David Simon's The Wire is, well, perfect. It is the Lawrence of Arabia of television. So pick up The Wire on DVD before you grab the shield.

Off the top of my head in no order what so ever...
"Witch Hunter Robin" (one of the few that I actually like better dub'ed than sub'ed)
"Photon" (go with the subtitles on this one)
"Escaflowne" Series and movie
"3x3 Eyes" The first story arc is a little slow, but the second one is well worth it.
"Battle Angel"
"Revolutionary Girl Utena" Do not attempt the movie with out seeing the series first. The last three story arcs are amazing.
"Full Metal Panic"
"Fruits Basket" Fluffy but good
"FLCL" aka "Furri Curri" aka "Fooly Cooly"
"Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu" v. hard to come by, truly bizarre, and hysterical, and I'm not sure it is released here in the states yet...
"Blood the Last Vampire"
"Kite"
"Appleseed"
"Berserk"
"Blue Sub # 6"
And as several others have said: "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" Really anything having to do with GitS is amazing.

Random Note: If Yoko Kano composed the music, you can almost guarantee the project is good.

That should get you started. :)

Cowboy Bebop is the best anime, great characters, lot of the action, laughing, great music (thanks Yoko Kanno).

Hehe... Yoko Kanno composed the music for Memories that I mentioned earlier.

Its really esoteric and took forever to get to the USA. I actually have the import LD box set (its black velvet, ooh) that just happens to have a CC track with english subtitles.

Definately a good watch. Be sure to turn up the home theater voume and turn down the lights.

And a rather belated Happy Canada Day to alla y'all Up North.

I'm salivating at the Parade o' Exotic Ice Cream Flavours, Joe, & wondering if you're ever going to let us in on the recipes for the ones that work. Being a Southern girl, I have to ask: have you considered Plain, Unadulterated Peach? It's a staple on sultry (okay, sweaty) summer evenings here in North Carolina!

Cheers!

Thank God for TMN. I just love SIX FEET UNDER and STARGATE ATLANTIS. Two other great shows for you to check out: DEAD AGAIN & SLING AND ARROWS. : )

Any chance of seeing or at least having a mention (just one little sentence)of Steven Raynor in S9? I soooooo would like to know what happened to him.

Thanks.

hey there,
Great show, just saying thanks, also you should watch Martian Succsessor Nadesico. Greatest charector ever, Guy Di Gogi. He's a great laugh and the show is strange enough to be worth it. Other titles (that i liked anyway,) Evangelion, a good show with strong imagery. You might want to try Gasaraki, cool show with pracitical giant robots powered by the japanese art form noh, really inrteresting. Again thanks for a great show, keep up the good work.

Excellent! SG1 and SG:A are shaping up quite nicely.

As far as Anime as concerned, ou should definately check out Hellsing. Nice Vampire Anime with kick-ass characters. Though the Manga is far better than the anime, do you ever read the manga versions of animes you watch?

echoing0comfort wrote:

Ah, anime. I have no idea what series you've already seen, so I'll just rattle off my favorites:

Hellsing (Vampires. Lots of vampires.)
Initial D (You need to love cars & techno, though.)
Full Metal Alchemist (Airing on Cartoon Network now.)

Sci-Fi Theme
Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Comedy
Love Hina, Excel Saga, Trigun

I used to watch Chobits but the theme song haunted me for weeks. And yes, I realize I need another hobby. :) Enjoy!

have you had a chance to watch the FX show rescue me with dennis leary? I watched an episode with my dad and while it tends to be a tad graphic at times it is a very well done show.

Chobits is a good series, but not the best CLAMP show i've seen. I suggest trying the X series, it is quite good. I'm not so knowledgeable on new series except Last Exile which is excellent and for Haibane Renmei which is terrific as well.

I love tv on dvd as well. i have all of sg-1 on dvd thats released so far...i had to resort to the dvds before i had cable and the syndicated eps show in colorado at like...2AM or some rediculous thing.

Got some anime suggestion from the husband for you Joe. He suggests Magnetic Rose, Legend of Galactic Heroes (in his words, a space opera) and Fruit Basket (in my words, a very silly anime). He says that you must watch Legend, he thinks you will enjoy it thoroughly.

TV on DVD is great and I have all the Stargate boxsets available and will no doubt buy season 8 in august and Atlantis season one in september (french release dates).

Don't know anything about anim but there's one good TV Series from the Sci Fi Channel I would love to see on DVD and that's Tripping the Rift. Now that's a funny one !

And I love your great sense of humor! Guess I have a lot of love to give out. LOL Glad you are writing for SG1 and SGA.
