July 13, 2005

I see that Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are coming out with a new movie. All I can say is "Finally!" Its been over two months since the last one.

We're 7 episodes into the first season of Alias. I feel as though I should be taking careful notes. I'm enjoying it, although my wife finds the Sydney Bristow character maddeningly naive for a purported secret agent and is about ready to thow in the towel. I'm 8 episodes into the first season of Babylon 5 and am looking forward to seeing how the political intrigue between the various alliance races develops. Finished up the second season of South Park (my cellphone ringtone is Cartman singing a song from one of the Christmas episodes) and am considering my next half hour series. Judging from some of your comments, I should be getting back to Sports Night. Also, with regard to your recommendations, I will be checking out House once its released on DVD (I'm a big Hugh Laurie fan who I actually recognized from MI-5/Spooks. Speaking of which, when does season 3 of this series come out?). Also, some of you have mentioned The Wire more than once. I checked out season 1 a month ago and thought it was good. Season 2 is still waiting to be watched. On the anime front, I finally got through Chobits and have moved on to a terrific series, Paranoia Agent. Check it out.

What the hell does this have to do with Stargate? When is he going to start talking about the show?! Okay, okay. Certain scheduling changes have necessitated our making changes to The 4th Horseman I and II. But change is good, especially in this case since it means (I know it sounds like I'm repeating myself) the return of a much-loved, sorely missed character. I think this season will be known as the season of returning much-loved, sorely missed characters. Anyways, it'll be great to have "this individual", my fellow gourmand, back in town.

And speaking of eating... Still working my way through the last bunch of ice creams. I've found that the key is in the base - organic whole milk, cream, eggs, and vanilla pods. Once my ice cream containers free up, I'll give Smores a try. It'll essentially be a variation of Burnt Sugar Pie (marshmallow fluff and crushed graham crackers) with the addition of milk chocolate truffles. As always, I'll keep you posted.

Can't wait for the new seasons this Friday!

Give Sports Night a chance. It took me a couple episodes to get into it, but there are several laugh-out-loud episodes in there. Season 1 was definitly the best.

Sports Night will not disappoint. You should also enjoy Babylon 5 all the way through. The character development (Especially G'kar and Londo) is rewarding to watch. The arc over the series is great as well.

I attended an early screening of "Wedding Crashers" last night. Vince Vaugh was hilarious and Owen Wilson was his usual charming self. One or two slow spots, but overall the movie managed to maintain the humor pretty much all the way through. On the other hand, it is *really* R-rated (not for the youngsters) and a tad more explicit than I required in a few spots, but they are clearly going for the young male audience with those scenes and that doesn't describe me. Overall, a good comedy and I recommend it.

I've been re-watching "Babylon 5" myself - I've finished season 2. That was a really good series, very complex and not afraid to dabble in the unusual. You should also check out "Crusade". It didn't last very long (12 episodes or so), but I thought it had potential. And as long as we're talking about series from J. Michael Straczynski, I highly recommend "Jeremiah" - post-apocolyptic, dark and very good. Alas, JMS seems to run into trouble with TPTB and this series was a casualty after only a couple of seasons. Season 1 is on DVD, no word on the later seasons.

Getting back to Stargate, I watched the behind the scenes special on Monday night. I'm really looking forward to both SG-1 and Atlantis. Here's hoping they both have great seasons!

Hi Joe...

Just thought I'd look up the answer to the MI-5/Spooks question U had...

There seems to be no info on a Region 1 release of this series... However... Should you happen to have a region free DVD player, Season 3 will arrive on DVD in the U.K on the 5th of August 2005...

Go to:

Regarding ice creams, Joe, would you please experiment with some low-calorie versions and post the results?

A friend of mine loves picking on the later seasons of "Alias." He loved Season One, but thinks it got steadily worse. I still enjoyed the later seasons very much, though the formula was definitely changed.

"B5" is one of the all-time genre greats, but it takes patience. Up until mid-Season Two it feels like a nice, fairly unique show ... nothing really out of the ordinary. But once the arc(s) kick into high-gear, you realize that all those pleasant stand-alones were preparing you for a whirlwind of plot and character development.

The Season Three and Season Five finales are two of the finest hours of TV I've ever watched, and by Season Three/Four having the entire series as backstory is immanently satisfying.

All this ice cream talk is making me quite hungry! I can't wait for season 9 to start, although I think it will be some time before it's available here - and by here I mean Canada *sigh* - I'm still so excited it looks like a great season ahead. If your looking for more tv recs you may want to check out Veronica Mars. I mean, sure, it's about a teenage girl who's a detective, and at first it may seem very much like your generic Nancy Drew mystery, get knocked unconcious, but solve the crime every episode type show, but it's not. It's interesting but not to serious. Of course my opinion may be skewed being that I am a teenage girl. But I must have decent taste because of my strong affinity towards Stargate, right?Well enjoy the break, now I've got to scrounge up some ice cream....

I applaud you for being able to watch so many shows! I would love to, but for some reason cannot convince my parents to buy me the DVDs. :) But, if you are looking for another show, one that I personally love is Crossing Jordan. Great show about a medical examiner in Boston.

Seriously mate, when on earth do you sleep? I have a regular 9-5 job and I can barely cram in 3 shows a night! How the hell do you do it? Are the days longer in the northern hemisphere? YOU GUYS HAVE SOME SORT OF WEIRD ASS GRAVITY FIELD THAT CAUSES A TIME DILATION DON'T YOU!! I knew I was missing out living in Australia.

Tell your wife to stick with Alias; Sydney gets some tougher skin. Plus, watching her dad scheme is entirely worth it, not to mention another one of her close relatives... whoops, wouldn't want to give too much away! Can't have any spoilers now -- haha, the tables are turned my friend! ;) Seasons one and two are good, but three and four seem like they ran out of ideas. Sort of like they jumped the shark. However, five is supposed to be better, but I wonder how they will work around Jen Garner's pregnancy and all... I'm rambling....

It's Friday!!!!!

Can't wait to see what you think of House. Hugh Laurie is amazing--what an incredible actor. Comedy? Sure. But in House, his performance is so different than anything I'd seen from him before (and his American accent is great, except maybe for a word every now and then). If you didn't know it was Hugh Laurie, you might not recognize him. Still, his performance in MI-5 did give you a taste of what he is capable of... Like you, I'm a BIG Hugh Laurie fan.

As for Alias, I agree with some of the others here. Stick with it, at least through season 2. Season 3 was a bit maddening, but season 4 improved in the second half, and the season ender was very good. Season 5 looks promising.

I enjoyed Stargate's season opener last night--getting to know the new characters, but really missing Jack and Sam. Still, I thought the ep was a promising beginning and I'm looking forward to more!
