July 20, 2005

Peter DeLuise certainly has his hands full as he preps not one, but two episodes this week: Ripple Effect and Stronghold. On the bright side (for me), given that I'm only producing one of the two episodes, I only had to sit in on half the meetings. Still, the two hour Extras Meeting had to be a record. The stunts meeting, on the other hand, lasted a grand total of thirty seconds - so there's another record right there. To top off the day, we finished with the Visual Effects and Playback meeting. Whooweee. Try explaining the science behind this episode in a nice, neat, concise manner. And I thought time-travel episodes were confusing. Suffice it say, however, we're working with some brilliant people and I have the utmost confidence in Krista, our Playback Supervisor, to come up with some kick-ass graphics that will effectively explain it all - or die trying. The Visual Effects portion of the meeting took about another two hours, but Peter and Michelle Comens (our VFX Producer on SG-1) came up with some very cool shots and sequences for the various scenes. This episode is going to be a lot of fun. Halfway through the meeting, an "old friend" dropped in for his costume fitting for The 4th Horseman. It was great to see him again.

Turns out Paul only has approximately 10 days to write The Tower. Damian put out his revision of Ethon while Carl has started work on a first draft of Michael. Robert did a pass on Stronghold and offered some excellent notes on The Scourge (no one has objected to the title yet so it looks like it may stick) and I've started work on the first draft. This is what I've got so far:

TEASER

FADE IN:

INT. CORRIDOR - SGC - DAY

So, what do you think? Honestly.

Watched the first part of the Quentin Tarantino Alias two-parter last night. I really like the Sloan character. He reminds me of me. Also finished episode 13 of Babylon 5's first season. G'kar is my fave on that series. This morning, I watched episode 9 of The Shield's fourth season. I'll say it again. The best show on t.v.

Speaking of the best - I made the best ice cream the other day.: Nutella Ferre Rocher. The secret is to mix the Nutella in WHILE the ice cream is mixing and not before because you want to maintain that pure, silky vanilla base that marries so well with the semi-chewy chocolate-hazelnut. I took delivery of my ice cream freezer yesterday and am now in search of a better ice cream machine/maker.

I'm about a third of the way through The Half-Blood Prince. I'd be further along, but my wife keeps on snatching the book to read it herself. So far so good, but its going to have to go a long way to top my favorite in the series: The Goblet of Fire.

We watched mixes of both Condemned and Beachhead the other day. Both are great episodes and definite highlights in the first half of both shows. Condemned was once known as "the clone story" because, well, it involved clones. Then, we lost the clone angle and it became "the not clone story". And, eventually, it became "Condemned". I, however, still refer to it as "the clone/not clone story". As for Beachhead - Maury Chaykin really tears it up as the goa'uld Nerus.

I read the magazine "Fine Cooking" and they always have a section on kitchen products. This time it was on ice cream makers. Try the September 2005 issue for some insight. The publisher is Taunton and they're in the US (Connecticut). The article is on p. 26 of that issue in case you're short on time. In one issue, Fine Cooking had a killer recipe for homemade ice cream sandwiches but unfortunately I don't remember the issue. I think it was in summer 2004 but if you go to their website and type in their search, it'll show you the issue and year.

G'Kar and Londo are a pair; both grow ... complex as the series goes on, in ways that reflect each other. Both take the events they live through and affect in very different ways, and their characters mirror one another in a unique way that continues long after the series ends. (You may have noticed that J. Michael Strascynski was fond of both flashbacks and flashforwards to tell his story, which is how we know what happened to the two of them in the end. But I won't spoil it for you.)

Season 3 is where things kick off in Babylon 5 - there's terrific character development in G'Kar.

Damn, JMS wrote on of the best shows ever!

Hi Joe:

First of all, Congratulations on an awesome season opener for SG-1. Can't wait for more.
Your first draft? Looks promising, really, I can already see it...
BTW - I love your idea for the Nutella ice cream, especially since I can't get enough of Nutella.

Looking forward to your next message and thanks for taking the time for this blog and for answering all of our questions in the forum. ;-)

I am so glad that I'm not the only one who's favorite book in the Harry Potter series is the Goblet of Fire. Everybody I know raves on and on about the Prisoner of Azkaban and how it's most definately the best but I stand by The Goblet of Fire.

I still don't think HP:HBP is quite as good as "Goblet of Fire", which was also my favorite - I really hope that they don't wreck the movie.

The one annoying thing about reading the book is that everyone is trying to spoil it. Ten minutes after I finished reading it, I went to livejournal, where someone had a blinking icon, which gave away the biggest spoiler of the entire book.

Oh - Thanks for the update!

Stick with "Bab 5" - season 1 is just the set up. Seasons 2 and 3 will knock your socks off - best sci-fi writing I've seen on TV (sorry. .;o)).

I'm 1/2-way through HBP and find it missing "something" - can't put my finger on it yet. "Goblet of Fire" has become my fav, though Rowling says that is the one which was the toughest to write.

Thanks again for your blogs and articles. Sounds like all of you enjoy your jobs way too much. *lol*

I think you should start warning us if you're gonna talk dirty like that.

I just had Icecream, ant it's 11:28pm (Syd/Aus time) and now I'm Freasing! I hate Assesments...... although this assesment for Society And Culture IS on the Popular Culture of Sci-Fi and in paticular Stargate :) -- on that note. Back to work!

oh PS - Have you ever heard of UK series 'League Of Gentlemen' about Locals - Dark Comedy, there's 3 Seasions and a movie comming out. My uncle came over from Perth and I watched 3 seasions in a week... lol now I'm behind in homework, the only skill I aquire is procrastinating.

Re: your script-in-process,
I would have gone with the gate room rather than a corridor, but to each his own. (You said honest opinion, right? Heh)

If you're saying Beachhead will be great, it's got a lot to live up to after Avalon 1. What a great start to the season. Congratulations.

Never thought about the amount of various production "meetings" you go through as well as the process of writing and reviewing.

I agree with you about Harry Potter: GoF being the best (and I've finished HBP).

Sloane, huh? Nah, can't really see it, myself.

Hey Joe, I can't wait to see "4th Horesman" and the return of "the well missed character". I'm also looking forward to seeing "Ex Deus Machina" and the return of Earth exiled Ba'al.The season premieres were both awsome, Ben Browder really holds his on as Camron, But the little hints of Criton from "Farscape" make me love him even more, I especially loved "Dude, Bullets Bounce!!!!!" Another episode I can't wait to see is "Duet", McKay as the kissing bandit seems quite entertaining.

I know another series on DVD you should enjoy seeing "Seaquest:DSV".
Peter stared in the show along with his brother aswell as the guy from "Jaws". you may have heared Pete mention it once. It also stared the Late Jonathan Brandis.
Also check out Joss Whedons "Firefly".

P.S. Have you seen the "Fantastic Four" yet with Jessica Alba and Michael Chiklis? I saw it last week with my sister. It is a most see.

Sloane reminds you of you? I knew you were a genius but now I also know that you're evil! : )

I'm totally on board with the whole Nutella love - I will confess that once, after a few drinks to many, I ate half a jar on its own. Needless to say, I'm NEVER doing that again.

I personally found HP:HBP a little...flat. It still sucked me in, still surprised me but didn't give me the rush of the other books in the series.

First & foremost, Joe, a huge 'woo-hoo!' on the season openers. I had friends over to watch, & we're still debating about which among the many was the best moment. I can see why you've all been raving about the rejuvenated enthusiasm around there!

Second, I was just looking at the local(ish) news feeds, & found a link to a Fayetteville, North Carolina news site's feature on (wait for it!) homemade ice cream. I immediately thought of you, & laughed when I realized that the first recipe in the article was for...yep, Unadulterated Peach.

The Nutella sounds wicked good, & I really do think you should consider a compilation of recipes for us! One can only feed vicariously off another man's ice cream for so long, you know!

Best regards as always!

Nutella... yumm... Nutella with peanut butter or banana (or both) makes a great sandwich. Maybe good in ice cream?

Glad you are enjoying B5. As others have said, it just gets more layered as it goes along.

I'm not far enough into HP6 yet to judge how it compares to the others.

Part 1 of Avalon did a great job introducing Mitchell and Landry - looking forward to part 2 tomorrow.

Thanks for continuing to blog Joe!
