STARGATE SG-1 / STARGATE ATLANTIS EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

July 27, 2005

Let's start off with the Ice Cream Report. As I write this latest entry, I am working on two flavors: Chestnut Cream, and Milk Chocolate Fudge with Brownie and Dark Chocolate Fudge Chunks. Its my first time making the latter and I'm a little worried about those fudge chunks - but will let you know how it all turns out. Re: the last batch. Amaretto Amaretti was the surprise hands-down winner.

The Bananas Foster and the Clotted Cream Brandy and Zero Bar Chunks were also popular at last night's movie night. Martin Gero (writer-producer Atlantis, SG-1), Ivon Bartok (writer, director, producer DVD Special Features), and Alex Levine (script coordinator SG-1 and Atlantis) were over for sushi and movies. We watched Overnight - an entertaining documentary about a Boston bouncer who scored a million dollar deal with Miramax for his first script, and then proceeded to alienate everyone associated with the project, include friends and family. I enjoyed the movie but thought it could have benefited from an amusing narration a la Supersize Me. Next, we watched Gunner Palace, another documentary, this one focusing on the war in Iraq. Opinion on this one were mixed.

Speaking of mixed opinions, I finished the Half-Blood Prince last weekend. My wife hated it so much that she vowed never to read another Potter book again. I'm surprised and kind of disappointed because she has been a big fan of the series.

Ratings. Ratings. Ratings. Sweeeeeet! SG-1 stays strong and Atlantis, thought dipping slightly, continues to deliver solid numbers. As I said in my previous blog, a 2.0-ish average would make us all VEEERY happy and both shows look to continue their success of previous years. But, admittedly, SG-1 was the big news. Slight drop off is to be expected after a premiere and the fact that SG-1 stayed the course bodes well. Also, I don't know how much impact this may have had (and I'm willing to accept that, maybe, the effect was negligible), but I was informed that we were up against the Speilberg mini-series, running from 8:00 - 10:00 pm. the past couple of weeks. Well, we'll find out what effect, if any, it had on the shows because its aired its finale last Friday.

Just saw the new Atlantis opening (that's the one minute version). It kicks a**! Gone are the lame/cliche fade up/fade down/fade up/fade down sequences that you see in sooooooo many trailers today. Needless to say, it is a thousand times better than the 10 second opening.

Speaking of openings, I caught the fan spoof of the Stargate opening credits. Loved it. Ahem.

We started production on Ripple Effect on Monday. After seeing the first day of dailies, I had to give Peter DeLuise a call to tell him how much I loved what I'd seen. Especially Kvasir. He's a hoot.

The Scourge update. Completed the Teaser and an in scene one of Act I. The first act is always the toughest. After that, its smoooooooth sailing.

Oh, and Martin Wood came back from Colorado with some brand new footage of Cheyenne Mountain. Since season 5, we've been wanting to get new footage but were always told "Don't bother. Its Stargate's last season". Well, I'm pleased to say that people are thinking a little more positively now and that we'll be seeing post-1980 automobiles driving in and out of Cheyenne Mountain before long.

Also pleased to see that one of you took my suggestion and checked out Yuji's last time you were in town. Pleased to hear you enjoyed yourself.

You never said what you thought of the Half-Blood Prince. Goblet of Fire is still my favorite though I think that this one might be better than Order of the Pheonix.

Oh and you're ice cream talk is really not good for my diet. Everytime I read on of your blog updates I want to go to Cold Stone Creamery.

I'm sorry to hear that your wife hated the Half-Blood Prince so much! What did you think of it? I really enjoyed reading it, but the Goblet of Fire is still my favorite.

That's funny about the Cheyenne Mountain footage. I've always wondered about those shots... haha.

Nicole :)

OMG! New Cheyenne Mountain Footage! Does that mean we're not going to see Peter DeLuise's favourite shot of the guy holding his M-16 over his butt anymore!!! :O

That was my favourite part of SG1 :(

So glad to hear that someone has seen sense and decided to change the dreadful opening credits :) will they be used on sci-fi or are they for dvd/overseas/syndication ??

enjoying reading about your hunt for the perfect ice cream, and your viewing/reading habits.
May i suggest you check out Tru Calling, a terrific show starring the gorgeus Eliza Dushku (get her on stargate) that was cruelly cancelled by Fox for no good reason.

Does this mean that we're not going to be seeing the airman walking, grasping the rifle near his, uh...bum? ;) :P

You can blame Peter for pointing that out.

I made some Tequila Lime sorbet the other day it was so good. I love hearing about your ice creams tho, not allowed to eat it but it sounds wonderful :)

I'm guessing the rating will tell in a few weeks when you start going up against all these new shows that are coming out...I'm gonna have to buy another TiVo just so I can TiVo the other 2 that I'm not watching LOL
I may HAVE to TiVo SG-1 to catch at least the first epi of Threshold..b/c Brent Spiner is in it :)

Ouch, your wife is completely turned off Harry Potter now? The ending of Half-blood Prince was very distressing for me, but hopefully everything will turn out right in the end.

Keep up the good work on the blog! I check for new posts everyday.

I am trying to picture your new flavour, but all I can imagine is Ben &Jerry’s New York SuperFudge Chunk. So you will have to tell us how it stacks up to that.

I’m curious why your wife was mad at HP6 (if you can explain without spoilers since I’m deliberately reading it slowly).

I still haven’t gone to a fast food place since watching Supersize Me (Spurlock’s 30 Days was a pretty good series too by the way). Other documentaries worth watching - Dogtown and ZBoys, Rivers and Tides, and Capturing the Friedmans (creepy but compelling).

Work question - How do you all decide which Director gets any particular script?

yay to new footage of Cheyenne Mountain! You make us Colorado fans very happy =)

the only thing that would make us happier is to see SG-1 take a visit to the Cheyenne Mountain zoo! (haha sorry, my dad is still a little cranky over sam's "there is no zoo in colo. springs" comment =) )

My fiance and i just watched a korean movie called 3-iron, i suggest you check it out if you can. its incredibly awesome!

and in the theatres Tony Takitani comes out soon, its based on a short story by author Haruki Murakami which is one of the most eccentric authors i've ever seen!

Excited to know that there is new Cheyenne footage. All of that ice cream sounds absolutely delicious!

The new Harry Potter seemed a little scary compared to the previous installments. The Inferi are terrifying!

So what did you think of the Half Blood Prince?

I now must go to the kitchen and get some ice cream! I wish it were one of your luscious flavors that has anything with fudge chunks! There goes the tread mill working OT again.

The updates on the new eps is one part of your blog I enjoy so much, no matter how evasive you are! Please continue with them and with the updates on your book and movie watching. Tell your wife that she is in good company not liking the HP books. Not everyone (me) is crazed over them!

Another thing I love about your life is the movie night with the sg gang. Me thinks its greats that you all likes eachothers that much. It makes the show that much better for me. And you are a special guy to comment on the fans here!! Take care

New Credits? Will we see them on Sci-Fi? Or are they just for the UK-Version? BTW: These blogs are really great! Thanks.

Great to hear about the new minute-long intro. The 10-second one seems pointless to me - Its not long enough to be much more than a subliminal message!

I read in your question thread that your top NCAA b-ball team is the Evansville Aces. That's my hometown, so it absolutely shocks me when I hear anyone mention the team!

Tell your wife I know how she feels, but that she needs to read very carefully. There are a lot of clues as to how the series may end on a much happier note for the characters in the end of book six . Jk Rowling likes a twist. I don't want to give too much away here, but there are a lot of interesting and plausable theories on Mugglenet.com. I'm sure that by the time book seven comes out (2 years) she'll be caught up again. If she'd like a new series to start she should try Jenny Nimmo's Charlie Bone books or Brian Jacques' Redwall books. Both are an excellent read. Also, I don't know how y'all read at such a dignified pace, I totally stayed up all night to finish mine. Shameless, I know!

i had also recently seen both of those documentarys. Gunner palace was a big dissapointment. And overnight was a letdown as well it really didn't add anything to the story that everyone already new.
