July 29, 2005

So there's someone at work who is following this hot new diet plan in which you eat for your bloodtype. He swears it works. I asked him about it and he told me that being an O blood type, he had to lay off sugar and white bread. Lo and behold, he's losing weight. Color be skeptical and may be going out on a limb here, but I'm pretty sure that taking sugar and white bread out of your diet would prove an active weight-loss strategy for anyone regardless of their blood type. But let it not be said I'm not open-minded. I've decided to check out a rival diet plan, the Eat for you Eye Color Diet. No pimentos, capers, or fruit ending in the letter R for me. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well its nice to see Ivon Bartok has started blogging. He's put together some terrific special features for past DVD releases and is in the process of putting together some great features for future releases. His feature on the village we built for season 9 of SG-1 and season 2 of Atlantis is a fun and informative piece on what it takes to complete a project of this magnitude. And the DVD he is working on for The Girls of SciFi is, well, perhaps not as edifying but certainly entertaining as hell.

Some of you asked what I thought of The Half Blood Prince. Well, if someone asked me to order the Harry Potter books in my order of preference it would go something like: Goblet of Fire, Chamber of Secrets, Philospher's Stone, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Order of the Phoenix. Although I haven't read the last book, I'm putting that one after Order of the Phoenix for now. As to why my wife disliked it so much - according to her, the books traditionally rely on heavy exposition in their final chapters, but in the case of Half Blood Prince, almost the entire book was exposition. All of the action either happened in the past (ie. the pensieve) or elsewhere (the burgeoning war with Voldemart's forces). In previous books, elements introduced early in the story end up figuring into the story's denouement. In the case of the last book, magical elements are introduced in the denouement to explain some of the seemingly inexplicable goings-on. Finally, she felt that the book felt like a stage-weight in preparation for the next and final installment.

The milk chocolate fudge brownie with dark chocolate fudge chunks was the overwhelming winner at lunch yesterday.

Working on The Scourge. Still in early Act I. Setting up the players and the off-world mission. SG-1 not particularly happy about it. Have to talk to Rob about Mitchell's background on Tuesday, and talk to Michael about his character's academic background as well, see if we can set something in stone. Was down on set yesterday for Ripple Effect and checking out Mo-Sys. Its going to look great.

Origin and Runner tonight, both written by R.C. Both great episodes but tonight's Atlantis offering is particularly good as we are introduced to our new series regular, Ronon Dex, in memorable fashion. Fan reaction continues to be very positive across the boards. In fact, there is one board whose fans have been consistently negative about the show over the years who have found much to enjoy in season 9, which is nice. Of course, there is also a handful of perenially negative posters who are having a tough time reconciling their sudden enjoyment of the show with the fact that its being written and produced by the same people who were responsible for the past 5 years of SG-1. So what do you do when the people you've been complaining about all these years produce something you can't complain about? Easy. Denial. Refuse to believe that they're responsible. The script elves wrote the first two episodes of season 9!

Well, we're in the stretch-run scriptwise. We have a good sense of how both shows will end their seasons and what our finales will be. The back half of SG-1 sees the return of several old friends (and one not so old friend), the loss of an ally, and a major blow to Earth. The back half of Atlantis sees some surprising revelations about the wraith, the return of a former adversary, and a script, being written by Carl Binder, called "Michael", which focuses on a couple of days in the life of one of the expedition's unknown and unheralded members.

Well, that's all for now. Off to do my workout and feed the dogs. After a two week lay-off, should be getting back to completing the first season of Alias.

Heya Joe,
Perhaps I should be asking this over on the board where ya "run amok", but this is where I am at the moment, so whattya do... Anyhow, you say and talk to Michael about his character's academic background as well - at this point, do the seasoned cast members have a lot of input about their character's background, or am I misreading you? (Are you saying you need his input on the background, or that you're informing him about an here-to-now unmentioned background?)

Ever curious,
-Kelly

aiiii - all this talk of diets promptly followed by new (and yummy sounding) ice cream flavours is hard to take! *carrot in one hand, ice cream in the other* ;-)

re: Harry Potter, I have to agree somewhat with your wife - I didn't HATE the book, but on the other hand I did spend a lot of time feeling like it was all set up for the last book - including the death of a certain character....

now, back to the ice cream, you mentioned the Caramilk one a while back, and I'm intrigued - we have Cadbury's here (altho I think that particular flavour is called Caramello), and being a sucker for all things combining chocolate and caramel, I'ld love to see a recipe. *hint hint* :p :D

Glad to hear the feedback is generally positive. I've gone spoiler free this year, and find I'm enjoying things a whole lot more when I don't know quite so much about what's going to happen. That and evertime I see the "Village" set, I squee like the fangirl I am, cos I've been on it and admired it's gloriousness :D (thank you Creation Vancouver con :D )

Is this person who is following the Eat Right For Your Blood-Type plan Peter DeLuise? Cuz he was looking quite fit in the Behind the Scenes special. Nice. ;)

I tried that myself and lost a bit too but the problem with that is that if you have O blood you're practically on Atkins, it's all protein. I just couldn't completely give up my carbs forever.

I was reading an issue of a beauty magazine and apparently there's a diet out there where its the "eat every other day diet" where you dont eat every other day. Apparently it works pretty well and the basis of it comes off the fact that alot of animals only eat about every other day and from studies its supposed to increase life span yadda yadda yadda.

anyway to make a long story short, people who try it say they're really cranky the days they dont eat, and somewhat cranky even the days they do eat so instead of not eating anything its suggested to drink broth or something else with empty cals to keep your system going!

I have to say, that there are going to be some people who will always complain about the shows, and its impossible to make everyone happy (now the question is, why do they keep watching when they're unhappy with the show? i dont know) but even though there are of course episodes i dont care for as much as others, i still love the show, and sci-fi shows is one of the things my dad and i do traditionally...we find a show, and we watch it together as one of the things we do. If it werent for shows like sg-1, atlantis, and bsg then my dad and i probably wouldnt get together as much as we do now. While most fathers and daughters probably argue, my dad and i discuss sci-fi shows and all the fun stuff (and iritating) things about them and i think thats one of the things that keeps us close.

I didnt mean to go off into a tangent, but there are people out there that watch the show for other reasons besides it being a good show, in mine its bonding with a parent =D

As for ice cream...have you considered one with aero bars? When in vancouver with my dad this summer i discovered them and man...america is missing something TASTY.

Re: Ice Cream Flavours

We have an ice cream shop over here called "Cold Rock" (YUM)

My personal favourite, Tim Tams with Chocolate Fudge....now being that Tim Tams are an Australian Biscuit you may have probs with this....but seriously worth the effort if at all possible.

An Eye Color Diet sounds interesting. I wonder what you would have to avoid if your eyes change color?

Origin and Runner were absolutely wonderful. I don't know about everyone who keeps complaining... they complain on the board I usually visit, but within a few days they are weeded out and positive comments along with a little constructive criticism and wordgames continue. :)

I got to see a little bit of the Women of Sci-Fi thing at one of the Creation Conventions. It looks interesting. I would rather prefer to see the Men of Sci-Fi- but it was nice to see Teryl Rothery again! :) She is very much missed as Janet!

I guess the absolute diet would be to lay off ice cream. With all those tasty creations you make- I know I'd have to play DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) four hours a day, everyday in order to keep it all off! It is ice cream though... hmmm... maybe if I just had a little. *goes to get some ice cream*

Cheers!

The biologist that I am wants to run around shouting at people that their (grand)mother was right when they said "everything in moderation".

But then the biologist that I am is drinking slim fast twice a day ;)

Honestly, your blog should come with a warning and disclaimer.

"This blog may make you want to eat copious amounts of ice cream. Neither gateworld or Joseph Mallozzi accept any responsibility for weight put on due to reading this blog and acting on your impulse to eat aforementioned icecream"

Being in the UK I can't comment on the latest season of sg-1 and atlantis yet (just wait until we get it first :p ) but i can comment on the latest Harry Potter. While it was mainly setup for the last book it was good setup that makes you anticipate the last book.

It was, undoubtebly, 100 times better then Order of the Phoenix, that was terribly written with a forced plot so that what JKR wanted to happen to setup books 6 & 7 happened, and Harry was ooc the whole time and he acted like a 5 year old instead of a 15 year old. The only redeemable quality of the fifth book was the fred & george antics. Thankfully book 6 was a great improvement and has setup book 7 to be possibly the best of the series.

I'll also bet anyone the final battle will happen at Hogwarts.

Hi Joe,

The ice creams sound great. I TiVO'd Good Eats on the Food Network and Alton Brown did a show on ice creams. I'm just itching to try them out...and the salsa recipe.

I loved Origin (although I really miss seeing Sam!) and I feel the best line of the night was Mitchell quoting Buckaroo Bansai. I howled for 5 minutes meanwhile my boyfriend was annoyed because he couldn't hear the show. I don't know who threw that into the mix, but I loved it. Is Mitchell a closet geek that he's seen Buckaroo Bansai?

Re: Ice cream...check out the Washington Post's Style section Sat 7/30 for "Barbecued Alaska" ice cream using Cackalacky BBQ sauce. Udder Delight Ice Cream in Rehoboth Beach, Deleware sells Bacon ice cream...mmm, bacon and butterfat, comes with CPR instructions. The trick is to match the fats to each other. Other variations include:Cappucino Stout Beer, mushroom ice cream, mushroom pecan, mushroom pumpkin, vidalia onion, cucumber, green tea and pear...I dare you to get some.

Re: Blood type diet
yep sounds silly but it actually works well for me when I follow it closely. I feel so much better when I stick to my "A" foods - especially avoiding dairy, meat and wheat. I gave up ice cream (even though I love it) several years ago when I was following it closely and have never gone back. So your ice cream recipes are going right over my head! Although they sound wonderful.

Re: S9 and criticism. Well I decided a long time ago that fandom was nuts but I think the majority of us believe ya'll are actually writing the show. No script elves involved. Except I'm sure your dogs give you a few ideas now and then.

The blood type diet works, and not just for losing weight, but also for a variety of health problems. I've been on it for a couple years. Thanks, Joe for sharing your thoughts with us. And double thanks for sharing your ice cream experiences :o)

Hey I'm one of the nay sayers as to Season 9 ONLY and I've kinda been won over, parts still grate on my nerves and is Daniel more stuck up this year or what....I've never found much to complain about in 1-8, in fact they were outstanding, storywise and acting wise. I does take a lot of work to take an even partily strong movie and make it a TV series with as strong a headwind as SG-1 has had. The only thing I'm still, let's say having trouble with is
1. Mitchell, ya think maybe BB can loosen up just a bit, at least in last nights epi he delivered his lines like he was reading the cue card.
2. The Orii, ok they are creepy in a David Koresh Cult kinda way, which again I think I see the writing on the wall where they are concerned but will not say anything about my hunches as to what they really are.
Ok, number 2 wasn't really a complaint, but in the words of my 16 year old niece upon walking into the room when the head guy was talking "Dude that's creeping me out"
ROTFLMAO
3. Why in the name of god is this season revolving around Daniel, or mostly {so says GateWorld spoilers} Are you going to base season 10 on what Daniel does with the Orii this year....that would be kinda lame b/c then why is everyone else in orbit, let Daniel handle it all.

Since Mitchell & Landry both quoted their grandmothers last night, I feel I'm in good company quoting my grandaddy: some people wouldn't be happy with a front-row seat in heaven.

Pay them no heed, Joe: the shows are great so far this year, & the sense of renewal on 'SG-1' that everyone talked about leading up to the premiere is palpable. Possibly the only thing that could make me enjoy watching even more would be a bowl of ice cream....

Cheers, y'all!

Ice cream! Your blog made me buy some this week, and I usually don't. Perhaps a scoop of Joe's Ice cream with each new episode to soften up the persistent naysayers...or distract them with ice cream headaches. :D

I am living spoiler-free (to counteract the ice cream habit I've picked up). I thought Atlantis had good "pacing" or whatever is the word. I didn't multi-task while watching (which I did through season 1 SGA). Happy and sad to what's doing with Ford. He and Ronan were the highlights last night.

All the new characters on SG1 are engaging - especially Mitchell, Landry and Vala. The Avalon/Origin episodes had many high points, with room left to tighten up the storytelling over the season. Looking forward to more "team" interaction and backstories.

Cool to see Julian Sands! He has a way about playing the Big Bad (to borrow a term from BtVS).

Nice surprise to see another blog so soon too. Thanks! Cheers,

Origin was very intersting. Like the lighter moments (especially when Vala offered Daniel the apple). Can't wait for more!

A question I'm hoping you could answer for me. What's with the last scene between Daniel and Jack? If you haven't picked up on fan reactions yet.. most people thought RDA either had stopped caring enough to put out such a poor performance or was sick. So...?

All this talk about dieting is depressing me! If you pay your daily visit to the tread mill (my best friend) you don't need to diet!! Eat anything you want in moderation (including ice cream) and exercise and life is good. I watch sg1 and sga while I run! :D I have admitted previously, like the others, that your blog makes me crave the icy delicacy!

As for the nay-sayers, pshaw! I know you don't take them seriously when the fandom is so strong! Another saying by the grandpeople fits those poopoos, "you can't please all the people all the time."

I want to thank you for your constant generosity in posting and answering questions here. It is an act of sacrifice that is much appreciated!

One of the biggest things that is thrilling the heck out of me this season of sga is that Ford is finally getting his due. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, I love you! On the other hand, if you kill him........never mind. :P hehe, I will still love you through all the tears and throwing myself on the floor and....you get the picture.

Enjoying with great abandon (my hubby and son leave me when I watch due to loud out bursts of laughter) this season of both shows. I just love Mitchell to death!! He is so precious! The perfect replacement for O'Neill (thought there is no one like him and I miss him terribly!). Ronon Dex is also a great character with a sexy wardrobe! ooooo

One last thing--I noticed you have a counter on your blog. How is it adding up? Great I hope.

Thanks for taking time to blog and share some of the behind-the-scenes experience with those of us on the other side of the TV screen. I have only seen the July 2005 posts, so I can't say I'm speaking to all of your entries when I respond here, just 2 recent ones. And I skimmed over anything not Stargate related (HP, anime and ice cream) - sorry.

From an earlier post:
We built our audience from word of mouth, from our loyal legion of fans who set aside an hour or two every Friday night to tune us in.
From this post:
Fan reaction continues to be very positive across the boards.

I'm glad to see you acknowledge the fans, because frankly, from your comment about some of the fans, it didn't sound as though you remember - much less valued - the fans and their post-production contribution to SG-1's success. And might I add, that you built your audience by presenting entertaining shows with a talented slate of actors whose work only enhanced the talented writing and inspired fan emotional involvement.

I'm curious which forums you frequent after the episodes air. I've been surfing around the ones with which I'm familiar, and I find a really mixed bag of reactions. Fortunately, it appears from the ratings that either the loyal fans are still hanging in there or that the 'scaper cross-over is making up for what you might lose in the loyal fans, some of whom feel ignored, insulted and underappreciated by TPTB of late.

Thanks again for blogging and keeping us anticipating what lies ahead for our favorite - oops, I mean - the all new SG-1 team.

"I'm pretty sure that taking sugar and white bread out of your diet would prove an active weight-loss strategy for anyone regardless of their blood type."

*heeheehee* I'm proof...17 pounds down since 22 May and still losing. Those who've met me before may have noticed the difference at the NJ con two weeks ago. (M. Shanks, C. Judge, D. Davis, G. Jones, P. Williams, for example)

Sugar's back in the diet, but baked goods (eggs and yeast) are out for at least another 6-8 weeks. It's not a "blood type" diet, it's a "food sensitivity" diet, also known as "if you eat certain foods, you'll be sick within 12 hours." *frown* Nothing like immediate negative reinforcement.

BTW, the "Eat 4 Your Blood Type" diet has been around since 1996...see copyright info at Amazon.com.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/039914255X/002-0253220-3282444?v=glance

So, when are you going to experiment with "ice cream" without cow's milk and eggs on behalf of us "food sensitives"? *grin*

All the best, Gilder
