August 12, 2005

You'll all be pleased to hear that I have finally completed my first draft of The Scourge. I'm fairly happy with it although the number of visual effects has me concerned. I'll scale it back if I have to or find a way to pull it off with a mixture of visual and practical effects (we've already started talking with the talented Todd Masters). It was distributed to the writing department on Thursday, but we didn't get around to doing notes. I guess I'll have to wait until Monday for the rewrite. The concept meeting is next Friday.

Ernie Hudson was in the offices today for his role in Ethon. He is a super guy, very friendly and, it turns out, a good friend of Beau's.

Martin handed in a first draft of his script. Yet another spellbinding Gero special replete with humor. Alan got started on his final SG-1 script while Rob is finally getting around to writing an original. And, for all of you asking out there, Robert Cooper is writing the script in which "that character" returns. Expect a big surprise - unless you've taken to reading some of the spoilers out there. Speaking of which -

I nearly hit the roof when I read the spoilers released on the upcoming Atlantis episode "Michael". As I've often said, I think there is a fine line between "teasers" and "spoilers". "Teasers" whet a fan's appetite for an episode by revealing some information about without giving away anything that would ruin his or her enjoyment of said episode. A "spoiler" on the other hand, is what I saw on the Pegasus Galaxy website - essentially a breakdown of all of the episode's twists and turns. Its just beyond me why anyone would need (or frankly, want) to know that much about an upcoming episode. I mean, seriously. While you're at it, why not set up a General Spoilers section for people who absolutely hate to be pleasantly surprised. Planning on renting The Crying Game or The Sixth Sense or The Usual Suspects? Check out the website and find out the ending first! Planning on reading the new Harry Potter? Well, save yourself the uncessary suspense by finding out how it ends before you even begin! Season finale of your favorite show coming up? Quick, find out everything about it so that your evening can be thoroughly devoid of viewing pleasure. Okay. Rant over. For now.

Well, finished season 1 of Alias. I figured we'd watch the season finale and then move on to another series. Big mistake! We watched the season finale (the final three episodes were great and I'm hopeful that the whole Prophecy angle is forgotten) and I asked my wife what she wanted to watch next. Her answer? Season two. Oh, and while I'm on the topic of Alias, I just wanted to say what a terrific actor Ron Rifkin is.

Today was, of course, Ice Cream Friday. Today's selections included: Vanilla with Dark Chocolate Fudge Chunks, Fig and Honey, and the two winners: Cinammon Bun, and Smores.

Oh, and before I go, thought you'd like to know that Paul and I will be writing the big SG-1 season finale. Rob pitched out his idea to Paul (while I was finishing up The Scourge) and its going to be fantastic. You already know we'll be ending this season with a cliffhanger - but what a cliffhanger! Stay tuned for more information about our final two SG-1 episodes: Crusade and Camelot.

Yummm Fig and Honey, I really have to get an ice cream maker all your talk about these ice creams makes me wanna run to Wal-Mart.

On Spoilers I'd have to agree, personally I never read them, If I read the spoilers why bother watching the show. About the ONLY time I might even consider reading spoilers would be if I was going on vacation to somewhere like Fiji or Tahiti where you KNOW you won't be watching the telly :) even then...RE-RUNS

Actually, some people set up a Wiki for the purpose of collecting spoilers to books, movies and other media. The point being that if you really don't care for something you can get a quick wrap up of the whole thing.

The site is called Spoil Everything at http://www.spoileverything.com/.

*whistling innocently* converted spoiler junkie here..... I used to avidly devour all the spoilers and discuss ad nauseum, but I have to say, I didn't enjoy the episodes as much having done so :( Now I just enjoy them as they come, and if an ep doesn't hold my attention quite so well...... *shrug* there's always next week :D

Oh, and I'm highly skeptical about this fig honey ice cream thing.... but anything with chocolate goes over well with me :D

My favorite ice cream is Bresler's parlor ice cream Oreo and cream.

After the big spoiler for Heroes, I don't read spoilers.

A question about writing. Has it ever happened where a writer has written their story draft and then have it completely thrown out?

As an Australian I'm really particular about spoilers because we don't get the shows here until well after they've been shown in the US (an example, our next episode of SG:A is The Gift - though we did watch season 8 SG-1 concurrently with the states). I avoid all forums and all spoiler blogs because some people have trouble with the concept that not every country sees Stargate at the same time. It really does take the enjoyment out of the show.

Regarding Spoilers:

Perhaps TPTB shouldn't release so much information in the casting sides which are freely available, to prevent major plot points and scenarios being published.

The internet is not going to disappear. It's well-known that the sides will be picked up and published/discussed... Perhaps you should make up 'false' scenes or something for casting purposes or make sure that major points are not included. It seems strange to allow information into the public demain that allows the whole show premise can be pieced together weeks before airing.

Totally agree about teasers and spoilers. One or 2 pictures about an upcoming episode is fine with me, but reading about the plot is just not fun. It makes me not want to look forward to watching because I've read about it. I did see the one you were talking about in PegGal.

I've been scanning the spoilers for SG1 for one reason only; to find out if Vala is coming back. My wife and I love her on the show and although we are excited to see Carter coming back next week, we would love to see Vala become a regular.

I hope see becomes a member of team in Season 10, she adds a lot of fun to the show, something that RDA did for so many years

I was surprised to see so much of the story on "Michael" released, I thought maybe it was intentional for some reason. Still looking forward to the eps though, looks great!

Actually being a person who doesn't like surprises, I personally enjoy and appreciate a spoiler here and there. I always read the last few paragraphs of the book before I begin it and unlike most people I can't stand the idea of getting a gift for Christmas without knowing what it is beforehand. As for movies, I have yet to see a movie where the ending came as a complete surprise. Even without spoilers, I had figured out the ending to The Usual Suspects and The Sixth Sense way before the ending. I guess it's just a matter of viewpoint.

So Joe is the 'cat out of the bag' way of revealing that season 10 has already been approved by scifi? I had heard something about this through industry sources, but have been waiting for official confirmation before even saying it as a speculation.

Ok can you please express mail me some of that wonderful sounding ice cream..I love chocolate, honey and figs.

Spoilers are a two edges sword to me. If you get a 'teaser' then negative speculation can put a real damper on the show (I know I did that once and I regret it). Accurate spoilers at least keep things from going to far into negative speculation.

Just my 2cents

I personally find that it is very different watching an episode to reading the spoilers for it. I process everything emotionally and prefer not to get nasty surprises as I have a very low stress threshold and have suffered with a lifelong internally caused depression due to a genetic flaw in a gland in my brain. If people don't want to be spoiled then they don't have to read the spoilers. It's like cencorship on tv. If you want to make sure that your kids don't watch anything that's really going to hurt them, then do what you can to make sure they know why you're censoring their tv watching and do so.

Rant well-justified, Joe; don't stop on our account! At the risk of treading too far into Pop Psych 101, I have to wonder if that spoiler mentality is fed by this 'instant gratification' curse under which society seems to function any more....

Loved 'The Powers that Be' & 'Condemned' last night: both very good shows. I'm enjoying the increasingly ominous portent of the Ori, & of course who could say enough about the wonderful, scene-stealing Vala? I'll be sad to see her take her leave in the next ep, though Sam's return & the long-awaited Getting the Band Back Together are going to be great!

Before I forget to mention it, kudos for bringing back Kavan Smith as Major Lorne. It's delightful to see minor characters like Lorne cropping up again in one show or the other -- or both. To my eye, that continuity really sells the realism of the Stargate universe.

You're killing us with the ice cream reports, y'know that, don'tcha? (Not that I want you to stop!)

Cheers, & with fingers crossed that the cliffhanger gets resolved on SciFi next summer!

I try to stay mostly spoiler-free. I picked up TV Guide last night and it had a big spoiler pic for next week’s BSG on the first page! Gateworld regularly hands out spoiler crack. Now readers expect a weekly fix. What do the TPTB do to control the leaks? Who are the Deep Throats, Joe?

A hope Vala returns in a Jakob/Selmac way (not as anyone’s dad of course, but as an ally who helps or not as it suits her self-interests.) Vala made a great G’ouald. Does she know Baal? Those two together would be hot!

Ahem...back to team SG1 - looking forward to seeing the actual team take the stage next week.

So very kind of you Joe to tell us how we should watch the show. If you don't like spoilers, here's my advice for you - don't read them for the shows you watch. As for me, I love 'em and I don't feel like it takes anything away from my enjoyment. Quite the contrary, it enhances it as I look out for the things that particularly caught my interest. They also give me forwarning so I can skip (or tape and fast forward) episodes that concern the Many Loves Of Samantha Carter.

Figs are really big on the island of Cyprus this time of year. I'm sure you could market fig and honey there. Hey did you read the NY Times article last year about archeologists finding Atlantis off the coast of Cyprus? I told people that it's really in the Pegasus Galaxy. Some people....

Alias is a good show. You find yourself hating Sloane but routing for him to turn good. Wait until season 4. He kind of gets there. Yeah, Ron Rifkin is great!!! As for spoilers, I know what you mean. I was reading a novel that its jacket description hinted at a death of a major or minor character. I read the author's website on her forum and found out the surprise. Needless to say, I was upset about the character's death and the fact that I found it out via a spoiler.

Ha. I told ya. Clifford delivers on Alias. Well, that and the very last scene. You are very right on Ron Rifkin. As with any genre show, it's not the main character, but rather the other cast members that really establish the show's cred. I can honestly tell you that Season Two is even better because of the SpyFamily dynamic. Lena Olin and Victor Garber are phenominal. You're gonna love it. Fig and Honey sounds like a little bit of heaven. One of these days I'm gonna have to get myself an ice cream maker and try out all the wonderful stuff I've been listening to you describe.

As for the spoiler. Well, I'm a spoilerwhore extraordinaire. On one level I understand that you want to "suprise" the audience. However, isn't it fair to say that it's a measure of the devotion of a fan- the lengths they'll go to for spoiler information- joining casting sites, etc.. We are so caught up in the world you've created that we're frothing for information about what will happen next. Perhaps not the comfort you're looking for, but seriously, who would not want to pop a Xanax before Meridian? My world is a safer place because of spoilage.

I normally wouldnt read spoilers but with season nine I was very interested to see what direction you guys were going to take with these new characters (Especially when you consider im in the UK so get the whole dam thing way after you guys anyhow) .... You know how when some bands lose their lead singer the're never the same afterwards, Well I had £10 riding on once RDA left the show would slowly disappear, which is unfair on the other actors but is the way things are sometimes. (Still out on that one by the way, however I have high hopes for the whole Jackson v Carman thing :) ). Of course your right about spoliers, but have you ever read a book you just simply cant put down? Want to know what happens to a particular character and how this or that event pans out? Well imagine you didnt have the book and someone was handing it to you one page at a time day by day. Then someone offers you some extra pages, What would you do? say no?

The spoilers are here to stay, and many publications actually post them today. Virtually all fans are smart enough to not click on a link that says spoilers if they don't want to read them. You've got the same choice.

I read spoilers on some shows and avoid them on others. It's easy enough to do.

It's not so much the spoilers that can suck out the fun from a show, but the constant speculation on them that puts off most fans.

I don't need to read spoilers anymore. The "in this episode" blurb in my TV guide and the German translators' choice of subtitles usually do a much better job at that than I ever could... But I admit I used to read spoilers. I like to know where the show is headed in general. The problem is that most teasers and spoilers just go that small step further, or stop after telling you the episode title, so I finally decided to stop reading.

On a completely different note, does anyone know where the great camera work in Season 1 of Stargate went? It used to have a much more movie-like feel and had really impressive pans and zooms (a few even were in the opening titles), and there were also all those nice looks through the "space map". It's a pity we don't get to see stuff like that anymore. I miss all those shots where the camera sat next to Daniel's coffee cup :-(

Anyway, Season 8 is only just starting at the end of the month over here across the pond ... so if you didn't talk about the Ori much (or at least put a warning on top) that'd be cool. I barely avoided being spoiled here at Gateworld two times...

Bye, love your blog, keep it up!

To be frank, your comments about Spoilers/Teasers is devoid of all point. Not a surprise from someone who's "best" episodes include blatant rip-offs of Movies. I dont know, maybe your were being an ass that day, but the site clearly says :
Click here to view spoilers for "Michael".
Your rant about teasers and spoilers is completely redundant now we see the word teaser wasnt said ONCE! It's simple, and even you should get this, when it says Spoilers, it means Spoilers. It doesnt mean a few cryptic words or the tagline from the film you want to rip off this week, it means spoilers. SPOIL-ERs. Simple, eh?

My name is Jason (aka Spacen) and I'm the owner of PegasusGalaxy.com. I must say that I am a bit confused by this blog entry. Yes, we post spoilers for episodes but we go to great lengths to warn people and keep those who don't want to be spoiled from being spoiled. What I don't understand is that of all the sites that post spoilers for stargate, we have been singled out. What further confuses me is that we didn't spoil this episode any more than Gateworld or any of those other sites yet we are the subject of this blog entry.

It is not our goal to "ruin" the show for anyone. We exist because of our extreme obsession with the shows and our desire to promote them and build a strong fan base. I apologize if we offended any of TPTB. Some of us do enjoy the shows more when we are spoiled including myself and so our site provides that material for those who wish to see it.

If any of TPTB wish to contact us about any specific content on our site, I welcome them to do so. I want to work with you, not against you and would be happy to discuss any concerns you may have.

Why do I read the evil spoilers? As a college student I have little free time and so I have to carefully aportion what time I do have, especially on Friday nights--do I stay in my room and watch SG-1 and SGA or do I go out with my friends. Reading spoilers helps me to decide if that nights episode(s) is/are worth forgoing a "night on the town" with much better results than do teasers, which have burned me more than once. Also, when read months in advance (as in the Michael spoilers), at least for me they build anticipation, as the episode is now more than just a name....it has meat, and I spend the time until the ep actually airs speculating on how its going to be pulled off--there's a lot more to an episode than words on a sheeet of paper or computer screen, and what details were left out of the spoilers.....in the case of Michael: How is it going to end?...Will the weapon be deployable? What will "Michael"'s fate be? To me at least these details are much more interesting than the plot twists that are mentioned

PS,...to several previous posters; it sure is easy being downright nasty to someone when you're anonymous isn't it?

For what it is worth, pegasusgalaxy.com is not the only site, nor is it the first, in existance on the net that posts spoilers to episodes for Sg-1 or Atlantis. It is however one of the few that properly post warnings of spoilers within.

You never get spoiled on pegasus galaxy unless you click a number of very visable links with equally visable warnings. In fact spoilers are harder to find there, then they are on Gate World.

But seeing how your blog is hosted there I can see why you never mentioned them in your spoiler rant.

Oh, good Lord!!!!! Joe, you poor thing! I truly can't believe the blatant disrespect and rudeness in the comments that some jerks post here! Bleeeh! I am sorry that you have to wade through all the "know it alls" who think they know better how to produce tv than someone who successfully does it week after friggin week for years!! I don't know how you do it...except that you are a pro. I love you and I think that you are the most interesting and sincere person on GW. You make us laugh and give us great "teasers." I don't consider anything you have written here to be a true "spoiler" if there is such a thing! Spoilers come in different degrees. I will avoid like the plague anything that will ruin my enjoyment of the "surprise" plot. I like surprises and I think a show should be viewed as the writers intended it. So I feel you all the way! I was successful in being completely surprised by "Heros." The impact of that episode on my emotions was much more real having not known who was going to die! It was a wonderful show for me because I didn't know what was going to happen. The spoilerwhores are cheating themselves of a most wonderful experience by finding out too much. There are many spoilers here on Gateworld, so as a member it is difficult to avoid them all. However it can be done for the most part. I do feel for the members here who get the shows after us and get flooded with information ahead of time. But Gateworld has spoiler protocols in place, if people will just bother to read the rules. You can report anyone who breaks the rules at any time. This is a great forum and Darren, David and all the mods are fair and friendly enforcers. End of my rant!

I am enjoying the Stargate galaxy this year! You guys are writing great stuff. True, I am sad that Jack and Ford are scarce this season but so goes life. Camron and Ronon are super additions to the shows and contribute different things. All the new characters have added a fresh feel to this years eps. I am one who finds change difficult even painful but the new characters have eased us through the growing pains. I am also one who doesn't think that Vala fits in to the sg1 teem. Not to take anything away from the character, she is great and gives the stories the friction they need. Again you are doing a great job with all the changes and I am willing to give the shows the room they need to settle into the changes. But Sam will be a welcome sight for sore eyes this week! I tell you these things only because you said you are interested to know what the fans think. I understand tptb put much blood sweat and tears into Stargate and it shows!!

If you have gotten this far without going to sleep, then I commend you! Sorry didn't mean to get so long winded.

You have made my day by telling us that you decided to continue on with ALIAS, yeah!!! It is my favorite show on net work tv even though as I said last time, you have to suspend your disbelief in a very big way. But that is what makes it original. I get really mad at it at times but then they suck me back in with the shipping and Sloan! Isn't he just the greatest? LoL, and another guy you love to hate, like Rodney McKay (I don't mean they are alike)! One thing I truly love about Alias besides the kick ass fight scenes, is Bradly Cooper! Every show needs a little (OK a lot of) eye candy! hehe Stargate is very good for that!!
Hey, Joe, thank you so much for indulging us here. (at Gateworld.com) I appreciate that you are hanging in there with the blog and "Ask Joe" thread and that you are maintaining your relationship with Gateworld! It takes an outstanding strength of character to put up with some of the nonsense that people dish out to you!! GO JOE! You're the man!

Oops, almost forgot the "two thumbs up" for the ice cream combos this week, yum!

Ah,... spelling is optional on your blog comments too, right? :D

'The Powers That Be' was probably my least favourite episode so far, and I must have been kind of bored because I seem to have missed a scene where someone mentioned Mitchell had fallen ill? Did anyone mention it :s But at least now I'm actually spooked by the Ori. I hope Earth suffers greatly from them soon!

The only reason I look at spoilers is to find out if the Stargate that I KNEW and LOVED is ever planning on returning.

Crazy, I know.

Oh man I think Joe stepped in it with his spoilers comment...so many ruffled feathers over what adds up to nothing really.

Because those who red/like/write them will continue and those who don't will continue not to...I think the question would be is just where in the world do these people who write the spoilers get thier information from.....because I've seen some spoilers that turn out to be on the mark......

Hey Joe

I knew you wouldn't be able to resist Alias S2 once you'd seen the finale :D

As for spoilers - I agree wholeheartedly - I like to know what the basic plot is for an ep (eg "SG-1 go through the gate and find an old friend" for IGTBK), but I like the surprise of watching it. C4 here in the UK recently started showing Atlantis - and in the ad for Hide & Seek showed the clip of how McKay gets the Entity through the stargate. Talk about ruining an ep! I'd not seen that ep the first time round on Sky so I was not impressed.

Oh, just thought I'd let you know you're killing me with the ice cream! Any idea what it's like to be a pregnant woman with major cravings for the unobtainable flavour??? I want recipes!!!!

Hey, the vanilla with Dark chocolate fudge chunks sounds delishious(sp?), I only tried cookie dough icecream the other day because I felt left out-it was okay, nothing special.

I don't mind spoilers, my imagination kind of runs away with me when I read them and when I come to watch the show it's different and there are even more things you notice.

With the whole Aurthurian legend-stuff, are you going to do anything to do with Wales at all? I know Daniel mentions it in Avalon and actually says the name of the place right(I was so glad happy about that), I'd love to hear Michael Shanks trying more Welsh.

"Powers that Be" was a pretty good episode. During the first few episodes, I saw the Ori, but they were just another big bad guy. Now, I am pretty scared by them. These guys have the power to win.

I do think, however, that the revealing of General Landry's relationship to the doctor was very forced. Seemed like the writers had tired of the secret and threw it into the episode and moved on.

Season 9 has been off to a slow start but I find it improving and becoming a great season. Any word about Richard Dean Anderson returning for some more episodes? Thank you and take care!

I'd like to say a lot about Season Nine in general (good things) here because I can't realy find any way I could communicate in the slightest to the powers that be in the StarGate universe.
To start with, Season Nine is moving along pretty smoothly. I'm dissapointed at the loss of Jack (yeah, I know, a generic comment, *gasp*) but I do like Cameron as a leader of SG-1. It's pretty obvious that he's just a replacement for Jack, but he's a character that people can ease in to as opposed to breaking in an entirely new and radically different personality, and I applaud that you were all able to do that so well.
Also, just out of curiousity, will we ever see anything to do with the Trojan Wars? It would be interesting if the Ancients had a hand in that.
Just out of curiousity, what do you have to say about the Virtual Season 9 out there with Jack still in it? Do you think it compares with the actual Season 9, or if any ideas in it might have influence on the future course of the show?
