August 17, 2005

Wow. It seems I can't express an opinion lately without raising the ire of at least one thin-skinned fan. That said, I feel that, at the very least, I should give you all a heads up that this blog will include yet another rant. If you're given to fits of apoplexy at the mere whiff of an opinion that runs contrary to your own, then I strongly suggest you stop reading. Now. I mean it. Okay, you've been warned.

So the production office was ordering pizza today and when we asked the details, we were informed that they would be ordering from this terrific pizza place in town (Marcello's). But when the pizza finally arrived, we were horrified to discover not Marcello's but Domino's thin crust pizza! As someone who appreciates good pizza (I grew up on the stuff), I can't think of a bigger travesty than trying to pass that off as "real pizza". Seriously. Why don't you just spoon some tomato paste onto a cracker and eat that? As Robert sat down to eat his lunch, he quipped: "For a second I thought they'd put the topping on the box." And I'm assuming he drew this conclusion AFTER tasting it.

Okay. Rant over. If my tirade against thin crust pizza has somehow gravely offended you, then, of course, feel free to whine away (anonymously of course so that no one else can suspect what a tool you really are).

Anyhoo - ice creams on deck for Ice Cream Friday: Amaretto Amaretti, Chocolate Truffle and Oatmeal Cookie, and Kahlua Double Chocolate Truffle Peanut Butter Cupcake with Double Devon Cream Grand Marnier (whew!). I was just in the next room, uh, sampling the product. Tasty.

Had to do a bit of a rewrite for The Scourge, cutting down on some of the heavier visual effects, trimming the dialogue, and re-jigging the ending. The bug-wrangler may be coming in on Friday to discuss some of the practical effects. I'll tell you right now, I have my heart set on mealworms.

Watched the day one mix of Prototype. Excellent episode (I'll be the first to admit I was leery when the idea was first pitched out), wonderfully acted (kudos to our guest stars Neil Jackson and Bob Picardo), and wonderfully directed (kudos to the ever-lovely Peter DeLuise, especially for that Mitchell-Daniel "walk up the ramp" sequence at episode's end). Paul and I finished our prod cut of Ripple Effect and the episode looks great. As I thought, I had to lose a couple of scenes (the Lam-Landry walk and talk opening, and the Mitchell-Daniel "debate" on the ship), but hopefully you'll get to see the scenes - or, at the very least, read them when I post them after the episode airs. Over on Atlantis, David Hewlitt is neck deep in water shooting Grace Under Pressure while Joe Flanigan and co. have their hands full with a dysfunctional alien aristocracy in The Tower. Also, prep began today on The Long Goodbye.

Now that I've finished writing The Scourge, I have a window of opportunity (read: some free time) which will allow me to get back to some bigscreen viewing. On tap: continuing Alias season 2, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Kaze no Yojimbo - and I want to get around to watching Seance on a Wet Afternoon.

Well, that's it for now. I'm off to grab a cup of green tea and some downtime with the dogs.

Mitchell-Daniel "debate" on the ship

LOL. Is that ship as in boat or ship-ship ;)

As for the rant about thin-crust pizza, I say to each his own. I'm a pizza eater from way back when, and I have to say, thin-crust is better. It's all in who makes it and how greasey can they get it. Thick crust is just bread.

Hmm now usually I would have to agree with you on the thin-crust vs thick-crust debate (and wow, didn't know u had dominos there too...i thought that was an Australian thing...).

But then I tried these Pita-bread based pizzas they make at my old university...and wow.

They have a variety for every letter of the alphabet (none of which I can pronounce, let alone remember). Lots of cheese and mushrooms and stuff that's tomato-y and stuff that's not. And somehow the pita bread just brought out the flavours more...

I draw the line at pizza flavoured ice cream though. Just so you know, that would be offensive ;).

Man, I made the same rant last Christmas when we were visting relatives in Illinois. They all decided to eat at the local pizza place, known for thin crust, without regard for us who prefer thick crust. I can stomach thin crust, but my love is non-thin crust; I said, "I might as well just get a cracker and put some cheese and tomato sauce on it..." Of course, no one listened. It's nice to know someone else is like-minded.

I must agree with Rob. Domino's is indeed cardboard pizza. I'll eat it if I must. Alas, it's one of the few cheapo pizza places in Vancouver that delivers. It tastes even worse while watching the crucifixion sceen in Passion of the Christ (I kid you not) -- hope I didn't spoil the film for anyone.

Prototype. Can't wait.

You still seek to amaze me with all the different ice creams you are able to make? How long does it usually take to make one batch?

Also, since you like green tea, you have to try (or make) green tea ice cream. It's one of my absolute favorites.

Sahara - I'm rather certain that America is to blame for inflecting Domino's on the world. I apologize on behalf of all American's with tastebuds. :(

Joe - two questions for you. You talk about us hopefully being able to see the clips; do you think they'll be thrown online (here in your blog, or elsewhere on GateWorld), or is it a "see on the DVDs eventually" thing?

And, what would I have to do to get the basic recipe for the fig/honey ice cream from you? I've mentioned it to a couple of friends, and the general consensus is that we have to try this as soon as possible. :)

See, this is why I should read back to see what annoyed someone before commenting - then I could comment once, and not twice in a row, looking all stalkerish.

Anyhow, I do have to agree with half of the anonymous person's comments (and I should clarify that I'm not anonymous; I'm all about disagreeing upfront...) - I don't like the character of Vala. I just feel like she's an irritating distraction, and it's sort of made Stargate a bit more... well, not really a bit more comedic, since the series has always had a strong comedy flavour, but... something. Something off. I (and just about everyone I watch Stargate with) have been eagerly counting the days until she leaves.

That said, The Powers That Be made me see the character in an entirely new light, and although she's still not likeable (for me), she became sympathetic. That wouldn't have been possible without the prior episodes building my dislike. ;)

I realize that doesn't comment on The Ties That Bind, which you had so much fun writing. I can see why it would be fun to write, although I've to admit that it didn't catch me so much as an episode. Then again, neither did Atlantis that week, so it could just be that I was off that night.

Anyhow, my two chatty cents.

Comment is probably wrong, but here goes.

I do wish that Season 9 of SG-1 had been converted into Season 1 of a new Series. This would have made it easy to accept the new cast, and especially the fact that Micheal Shanks is not listed as the first star. As a long term RDA fan, his departure made the possibility of watching SG-1 - Season 9 slightly uncertain. When I heard Ben Browder was listed as first star, I was not amused.

Hearing that it had been intended to have a new Series (correct ?) I am a lot more easy with the new cast changes. I won't watch this year, but after a break, may watch.

Atlantis is fantastic. Joe Flannigan - wow !! What an actor ! More more more. But - what was done to Rainbow - disgusting. Clearly much though I love Atlantis now, no actor is safe, sad.

Everyone has their own idea about what makes a perfect pizza. To me, it's just not pizza if it doesn't have pepperoni on it. If you're like me and you prefer thick soft crust with gooey cheese baked onto it... and more cheese on top (of course) ... with lots of sauce... then The Tomato in Denton, TX by the UNT campus is the place. It used to be part of the Flying Tomato chain which started near the University of Illinois. I wonder if that's the one Ramen was talking about? I believe the current owners of the Denton Tomato (who came here from Illinois) still make it the same way as the original Flying Tomato. It's really good stuff.

I felt the same way about RDA as MacGyver. I didn't watch SG-1 until it's second season in syndication -- even though I rwas desperate for a new sci-fi to obsess over after B5 ended -- because I just couldn't stand to see him play anyone else. I'm really glad I did start watching it though. I ended up liking him as O'neill even more than MacGyver.

I take offense at the whole thin crust vs. thick crust debate- at least you people have a choice! Around here, you only get differring levels of grease on thick crusts which are either half-raw or so hard you chip your teeth.

Or there are the snooty gourmet pizzas with a light dab of sauce and one curl of pepper artfully placed in the middle of an otherwise barren landscape of dough. *sigh* And there's no such thing as delivery. Or Domino's. Or McDonald's. Hell, we're so backwards we don't even have a Starbucks!

All this talk of food and delivery and whatnot and which is better than the other. Bah. Humbug.

And as for the Kahlua Double Chocolate Truffle Peanut Butter Cupcake with Double Devon Cream Grand Marnier... is there even any ice cream in that?? ;) Any one ingredient would be good, methinks, but that just sounds like overkill. Would love to try a taste and find out, though.

Small things before dinner:

Vala- well, I liked her in TPTB, but can't say I think much of everything else I've heard about her. Claudia seems to be having fun, though, so I guess SOME good is coming of it.

Browder- As embarrassing as it is to admit, I keep failing to recognize him. Contrary to SCIFI's low opinion of fandom, I'm not confusing him with MS, I just keep looking at pics and going, "Who's THAT guy and why's he standing around with SG-1?" Sad, sad, sad. And I used to watch Farscape, too. But he looks thinner and paler than he did, then. Or something. Maybe that's just what I tell myself to feel better about my inability to remember faces.

Atlantis: Liking it so far. Martin Gero is a god. :) David Hewlett is the best thing to happen to Stargate casting since... ever. Rainbow is the best untapped resource on the show, David Nykl is a joy every time he appears onscreen (doubly so when he's speaking Czech), and the best new (crossover) character is Major Lorne. *happy sigh* I hope we get to see more of ALL of them. And that they all survive this season. And the next one, and the one after...

Firday's icecream sounds interesting, good luck with that. And about the Pizza, we don't have a lot of choices over in sunny *cough* Wales but I stear well clear of dominos because it just looks wierd-not how pizza should look!

As for Vala, I love her character especially her interactions with Daniel and Mitchell. It's nice to have someone who is not all evil and not all good all of the time.

Browder-I didn't get into Farscape, I missed the first episode then got confused so gave up but what I did see of it, he was good. I think he(Mitchell) really needs to take control of the team now, if anyone can fill O'Neill's shoes(hard task as it is) it could be Mitchell.

Dominos pizza is indeed a worthy substitute for cardboard (*really messy cardboard*) but that's about it.

So the Kahlua +++ ice cream caught my eye. Need a report on that one - it sounds fabulous. Like a yummy frozen decadent White Russian.

I'm really looking forward to seeing The Beach - been ages since BW's written for SG-1 (a whole episode anyway) and I can't wait to see what he's come up with. Hope we see Vala again - I ended up enjoying her character quite a bit (much to my surprise) and it might be fun if she were to drop by on occasion to stir things up. *g*

Enjoy your time off and Alias S2. Probably my favorite season because of the addition of Lena Olin to the cast. The older characters on the show (played by Olin, Garber and Rifkin) are just so much fun.

Hi Joe, just me again, enjoying your blog as usual. I am still incensed about the rudeness of the anonymous posters. I'll bet they aren't above the age of 12 so I wouldn't pay attention to a thing they whined out.

As for pizza, it is a universal favorite (like ice cream) for all. Everyone has a different preference. I too live in California where it is difficult to find a good one. However, the little hole in the wall places do exist and are great. But like one of the previous commenters said, pizza with salad is prevalent here. I love the vegetarian styles....with pepperoni! LOL No card board please!

I am of the same mind with the others when it comes to Vala. I love the character for an occasional ep and Claudia is such a hoot! But Vala is just not a good fit for SG1. I can tell you why she isn't right for the team: she is to irreverent! It makes for good comedy that's for sure but SG1 and the SGC have always been in awe of the mere fact that there are other people in the galaxy and they have great respect for each mission they go on. But Vala has none of that. She is in a different class level from SG1. She is low class and they are high. I hope you don't take offence because it is not meant as criticism of the writers. Just my own evaluation/observation. As I've said before, I love the character because she has added the friction in the recent eps. She would be good to bring in every now and then for that purpose. But SG1 needs that sense of awe and wonder that has always been there. Like every time they go through the gate they still can't believe what they are doing! She is old hat at it and it just doesn't work for the team.

On the other hand, I love Col. Mitchell!! He definitely has that sense of wonder and so brings it back to the team. That is such a cool aspect to his character! I still think he is precious, handsome, sexy and picks right up where O'Neill left off! No hate mail please! I adore O'Neill! He is the reason I started watching. But the fact is he is not here anymore and I won't stop loving Sartgate just because he is gone. Ford, on the other hand...a shame! IMO as a humble fan. But I know what they say about opinions! LOL

Hum...Grand Marnier ice crm? I could live with that! The perfect after dinner drink, er, dessert.

Keep up the thick skin, you wear it well! Those tools never change their grease! We know who they are because we can smell them a mile away! hehe

Thanks again for being here.

Something off. I (and just about everyone I watch Stargate with) have been eagerly counting the days until she leaves.

When I made a similar comment at a recent Creation con, Chris couldn't believe it, and Michael attributed anyone not liking Vala to being an ardent "Sam Fan". Well, as my screen name suggest, I am, admittedly a MAJOR-Sam-Fan.

However, as an intelligent viewer, I'm also able to separate a dislike for what a new character brings to the show from what's missing with a missing character.

For example, I can appreciate Ben Browder's performance as Mitchell though I miss O'Neill. I don't like that RDA's gone, but out of respect for his commitment to his daughter, I'm not going to whine about it forever. I don't think Browder pulls off "replacing" RDA because he's just not "big enough" to fill those particular shoes. He brings a different flavor to the show.

Vala brought a different flavor to the show, too, and for some of us it's like vomit ice cream. (For many others, whose opinions are equally valid, it's like Bacon or Oatmeal or any of the other flavors you've enjoyed.)

I know how many people watch the show with their kids, and it has been totally inappropriate for anyone under the age of 15-16 so far this season, with all the sexual innuendo and outfits intended to show off Claudia's anatomy. (And yes, I know Tok'Ra Spice [Anise/Freya] dressed like that, too, but she wasn't the main emphasis of the episodes either.)

I venture to guess you show folks probably don't even know what I mean; Chris seemed completely obtuse about it. Perhaps being in an industry where it's so often all about peddling flesh it doesn't stand out to you all as it does to the average Joe (or Jill, in this case). And after seeing the video clip of the "calendar girls", I can see why Chris wouldn't think anything of Vala and her tawdry costumes.

I will say that I appreciated the arc in the end (as of last Friday anyway, because I'm 30 minutes from this week's) for the character growth I saw in Vala over the five episodes. I wish we saw that kind of character development in more of the characters, rather than just killing off another beloved one every season. (Not that death isn't part of life...but y'all need a few more "red shirts" rather than torturing Sam with the death of her best friends and only remaining parental units.)

Just my 2cents...or three dollars, probably. American, not Canadian.

As for the skimpy outfits, I guess I just object to such blatant pandering to some supposed "Golden Demographic".

I'd be curious if there was proof that some well-written, well-acted scifi show(s) failed due to lack of T&A.

Quote from majorsamfan: Perhaps being in an industry where it's so often all about peddling flesh it doesn't stand out to you all as it does to the average Joe (or Jill, in this case).

Oh, and having a naked Daniel or naked Sam is anything different from skimpy outfits?

I like Vala and hope to see her again. The bickering between her and Daniel was getting annoying, but I certainly wouldn't say her costumes were bad. Certainly not as bad as the ones worn by Anise.

As for new characters, it took me a while to get use to Jay Felger.

Just as a quick comment, tonights episode was amazing... it's great to have the team back again.

I agree 100% on the pizza thing. Thin crust is AWEFUL! If you want some 'good' pizza, if you're ever near Niles in Chicago... Lou Menati's (sp?) Best pizza in the world. I swear... it's like three inches thick.

I had my own version of ice cream night. (totally inspired by your own) However, I make brownies instead. It was chocolate walnut with dark chocolate M&M's. Tasty! However, not as good as my cream brulee brownies.

Skimpy outfits? How did this become a topic on the comments?

*envisions Anise and gags*

Mos Def, please not her again.

Vala really seems to be a love her or hate her sort of character, which also played out in the Sci-Fi Friday open thread on DailyKos this last Wednesday. But I dig her, she's been great and I hope she'll come back later from time to time. It's nice to have Carter back, though, so last night's episode was both happy and sad character-wise.

It might also draw gratuitous hate mail, but I never watched the show for RDA, as fun as he was. Always preferred the Dr. Jackson character, but also came down firmly on the Spock side of the Spock or Kirk question. What can I say, geeks rule, imnsho.

In response to the demographic assumptions upthread, about half the Sci-Fi channel's audience is female and largely in the 25-54 year old age range. Science fiction may once have been the province of young guys, but that is such a dated assumption. Probably a big factor in the switch was getting strong female characters in the genre who didn't spend all their time whinging in a corner and waiting to be rescued. Authors like Anne McCaffrey (yeah, and others, but she came to mind first) drew girls and women in as readers and eventually movies & TV caught up. Socially, sci-fi has been very ahead of its day in gender issues for some time now, a trait that attracted me even before I was old enough to really understand what that meant.

This is totally off topic but I hope you can clear something up for me. I was just watching the Season 8 dvd special feature on the Supersoldiers.

If the Supersoldiers are clones, why do they have big codpieces (presumably with all of the right anatomy underneath) *grin* ? Now don't just say its because the actor underneath has them, 'cos you can do some covering up.

Cheers from Maryanne

Hi Joe:
Loved the show last night, very exciting. That's 6 for 6. I can't believe we're not going to have Vala anymore, she's such a hoot! And I loved that you were starting to show different layers to her, would love to see more layers peeled away. I hope you can bring her back as a recurring character. And I'm in the "old lady" demographic, and she really brought some excitement and enthusiasm to the show to get me hooked on the new season.

The only problem I had with "Beachhead", and I'm a major "Daniel fan", was the nasty way he treated Vala. I understand the irritation and the annoyance, but the "Shut up!" and "Keep your mouth shut", was a little over the top in nastiness, and it doesn't ring true for the Daniel character. After all they've been through together, he's certainly learned that she sometimes has insight into what's going on. I realize she had to be ignored for the ending to come about, but I just think there was a mean quality about the way he spoke to her.

Anyway, you guys are creating something awesome this year, keep up the great work!

the thing is your "real pizza" is not a pizza its a pie, go to Italy and try the real thing, trust me you won't try this garbage ever again. Great work on the season.

I wholeheartedly agree on the Domino's thing. Ugh! I always hate it when my office orders that pizza. The Chocolate Truffle and Oatmeal ice cream sounds divine!

Even though it would mean I'd have to restrain myself and try not to get very upset (possibly violent) about the thin-crust pizza rant, for now i'd rather stick to: Hey! The guy has a blog! That's pretty nice :) {insert further fan rant here}

Anyone who also blogs should check your comments, I went over to my blog and found several rude, profane and spam comments on mine from the same people who are doing it here in Joe's blog.

You can finish watching Alias after season two b.c then it just gets ridiculous and makes me want to cry. Seasons 1 and 2 were so freaking awesome and then three came around and was like "WTF?!?!" and by 4 I was so confused I didn't know what to do.

But thanks for taking the time to write blogs!! Can't wait for the new episodes.
