Well, things are finally winding down after yet another hectic, incredibly stressful, yet oh-so-satisfying season. Production wraps on both shows this Thursday and, as the actors and the crew take a much-needed break, the production office, accounting, visual effects, and post continues business as usual. Paul and I were in editing today, doing a visual effects spotting session for The Scourge. Lots of creepy bug sequences in this one. Guaranteed, these critters'll get under your skin. Overall, great performances from out guest stars, especially Tamlyn Tomita (who you played Waverly in my wife's favorite movie, The Joy Luck Club), and the ever-solid Robert Picardo (who's wife Linda, incidentally, makes the most amazing rumcake I've eaten in my entire life). We're expecting a director's cut of Allies any day now. The director's cut of Camelot will soon follow. Speaking of which, Michelle showed us the animatics for the space battle and EVA sequence today. They're going to be great. Also, checked out dailies today. Ben getting was getting good and muddy showing off his mad sword skills. John Noble (aka Denethor from Lord of the Rings) and Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) guest star.
Wrap party last Saturday night. Martin G, David H., his lovely girlfriend, Rachel, Rob, his wife, and I hit Yuji's for sushi and sake before making our way over. Everyone was dressed to the nines. Special mention should be made of CJ's outfit which was somewhat reminiscent of the movie The Cotton Club. Styling.
Still awaiting any official word on next year. Just in case, I've signed up for an intensive reiki training so that I have something to fall back on should things not pan out. And, of course, there's always the ice cream. Last week's stand-out flavor was Chestnut Cream (proclaimed by many as "the best ever". Also on deck was German Chocolate Cake). This being the last Ice Cream Friday, I'm going all out with: Black Forest Cake, Vanilla Clotted Cream Advokaat, Fudgeeo, Dark Chocolate with Dark Chocolate Pudding and Dark Chocolate Chunks, Milk Chocolate with Shaved Dark Chocolate Toblerone, Burnt Sugar Caramel with Flakies, Vanilla Tuxedo (black and white chocolate chunks), Dark-Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter Chips, Baileys and Dark Chocolate Cookies and Cream.
On the t.v. on DVD front, we finished the second season of Nip/Tuck. Chris was in the office the other day and said "Season 3 is even weirder". At the time, I found that very hard to believe. Then I watched the first two episodes of season 3. We're up to date. Waiting for the fourth season of Alias to come out in a couple of weeks and doing my best to avoid any season 5 spoilers. Also waiting for the second season of Arrested Development to come out next week (and looking forward to getting around to the episodes I PVR'd). I'm a couple of episodes into the fourth season of OZ (I forgot how well-written and engaging that show was). My wife and I are mulling over which t.v. show on DVD to start on next. On the t.v. front, its The Amazing Race and, natch, Survivor. And then there's the NFL, the MLB playoffs, and NCAA football (Big game for the Longhorns this weekend against the Sooners). Found time to squeeze in a couple of movies (Narc, Bully), and some anime for good measure: started Wolf's Rain (love it), R.O.D. (like it a lot), and Peacemaker (don't hate it).
By the way - in response to those decrying the fact that I didn't give a definite answer to some of the burning questions in my last blog: the reality is, nothing is written in stone. I can say "No, Jonas is definitely not coming back" because there are no plans to bring it back and yet, if circumstances change and he does happen to come back next season, then other fans will be screaming blue murder. Circumstances have a habit of changing, and that applies to everything, from exploring Sam's love life to Kawalsky rejoining the team.
Unfortunate news on the Dreamwatch front. Atlantis's Instinct was beaten by the model car from Stephen King's Christine.
Rob, Martin, and Alan checked out Serenity over the weekend and liked it alot. Alas, since getting my home theater, I won't set foot into a public theater and suffer the indignities of sitting through commercials, cell phone rings, conversations, and trailers for that LL Cool J movie that I've been seeing for three years running that has GOT to be released sooner or later. Looking forward to seeing Batman Beyond though.
As always, am checking out your commentary. Yes, even the one hundred and forty something. Keep 'em coming. And play nice.
Ok, fine. So you're still plodding through all these comments. How about another complaint? I know you're not the guy to go to on this, but the season eight DVDs were released today, but with the chopped down, hacked up version of Threads. Other expected special features are also missing. Any chance that someone could make a phone call or let Sony know how disappointing this is, and that fans are looking for a way to rectify the situation? To have anything less than everythign for such a pivotal episode in the show's history really is a travesty.
Play nice?? I'm sorry, Joe, maybe no one's introduced you to fandom, yet. ;)
Kidding.
Pondering the bit about Sam's love life being immediately followed by mention of Kawalsky rejoining the team and wondering if I should run around implying oodles of Sam/Kawalsky ship in the future, but I think I'll leave that job to someone else.
Hate to say it, but Christine does beat Intruder. At least in my book. Not one of my more favorite eps, although I think it's better than Sanctuary. lol.
Ha to being against public theatres. And even worse than suffering through other people checking their cells is being WITH someone checking their cell. *glances at David* Humbug.
Ice cream wise, I'm curious now to know whether or not it'd be possible to make funnel cake ice cream. with all the cinnamon and powdered sugar goodness of the real thing. *drools* I need to move to some place in the real world where I can get funnel cake (AKA fried dough) any time I want instead of once a year. *small pitiful sigh* Makes me appreciate it more, yes, but ohhhh, it's a long time between doses.
Hi me..again. Sorry you just seem so damn cool. I see you didnt try out the guiness ice cream. Oh well you probly just missed it.
I have decided (inpart because of the lovely actors on SG1 and SGA inspiration and many other sources) that acting is a the career choice for me.
I had the epiphany when I got a PT Job at a local theme park playing a dead widow for their holloween event this year. After three night I must report that I have been poked, pinched, and proposed to. Yet I'm having so much fun doing it...I can't wait to do it again next thursday night. It's the first job I actully love doing. One of those I'd do it even if they didnt pay me' deals. So just pass around a big thanks to the actors for me, and give yourself a pat on the back as a producer, for making this whole show business thing seem a little nice.
Later,
AJ
Hey Joe:)
Wow, how time flys when your having fun I can;t believe that you are done shooting for this season. It seems like you just got started. Well I hope that you all have fun this year shooting, and i hope that you can get at least one more for sg-1 and 8 more with atlantics!!
Have fun making ice cream and whatever comes your way!!
Hugs
Shortea
Thanks for all of your great work this year! I am loving every minute of it, so all of you guys deserve an extra big slice of cake from the wrap party, a long hot bath, and some down time. I'm looking forward to the SGA DVDs -- especially special features -- and I'm SOOOO excited for "The Hive". Why is January so far away?!? ::sigh:: Oh well. One thing that I've noticed on Atlantis is how wonderfully the characters are progressing (Teyla in "Trinity" comes to mind and Weir in "Conversion"), so I hope that we'll keep learning more about all of them in the coming episodes. Again, thanks to you and everyone involved for all of your spectacular work. You should be proud.
Ditto on the season eight DVD thing. I wouldn't know who to contact, but I would think the people who works on the shows would have a little bit of pull.
Also, really, do go the theater for Serenity. It is important for people to support it. Otherwise, there won't be more, and that would be a major shame for us fans.
Oooooh. Check out "Sports Night." Seriously, good show. If you don't know about it (and I'll assume you don't, not many do), it's what Aaron Sorkin worked on before West Wing. It's great. The writing and dialogue are typical Sorkinese. He works up like crazy with take-no-prisoners banter at super speeds, then winds it waaaaay down to make his point. The whole thing means you're never bored, as long as you can follow.
It was treated like sh...um...crap..by ABC. They put in a laugh track because they were afraid if they didn't people wouldn't get the jokes. At least that's the only reason I can come up with. The show isn't really laugh out loud funny. It's like putting a laugh track on West Wing, or even Stargate. Granted, the humor is "smart humor," and it got bashed in the same way that "Arrested Development" did. People who didn't get it assumed it was making fun of them or being "elitist."
[ /rant ]
Anyway, it died after two seasons, but you can get them both in a 6-disk box set. It has no frills or commentaries, or extra features, but the show is worth it.
agree on the sports night thing, it is one of the best shows ever (not that yours is bad but this is sorkin). and thanks for season 9, great work.
greetings from germany.
Serenity kicks ass!!! I hope they can restart that series
was threads cut down intentionally?
PLEASE help with the DVDs Joe. I'm sooo pissed I preordered them, already spent the money on them, only to find out how crap they are. It really is enough to make me give up on the show. No commentary for Threads or Citizen Joe (commentaries for all eps were advertised), less than half the special features of the other box sets for season eight. How could this happen? How can I get the long version of threads? This sucks man.
I must say the features on the Season 8 DVDs are a little sparse.
How can anyone read one hundred and fourty messages... I doubt I'd be able to get through 14 (no offence to their authors) :(
OMG Serenity was cool!! You should go see it - it's even worth sitting through all the shit...
Or you could go at like 9 am on a Saturday or something?? Less people then ;)
And if you haven't seen Firefly I'd suggest seeing that first - cos it'll all make much more sense....*can't remember if u've talked about seeing Firefly* But me & my mates did the whole marathon on friday night and saw Serenity on Saturday morning!!
*would recommend it*
Good sci-fi brainwashing session ;)
Tell your wife she has great taste - the joy luck club is one of my Fav books.
I have to say I was a little bit disappointed by Serenity - it was packed with action, and had less of the snarky banter and character development that I loved from Firefly. Damn, I wish the series hadn't been cancelled. I'm sure I'll still end up getting the DVD though.
John Noble!!! I can't wait to see that! Big fan since he jumped off the cliff in Minas Tirith on fire!
Serenity... who wouldn't love it! Let the Browncoats unite! I want Firefly back though.
And I must say hope the show continues and grows!
Hey Joe,
Thanks for all your hard work. You obviously have a really healthy sense of humor, judging from your ice cream flavors. The Burnt Sugar Caramel sounds decadent. As for Atlantis, I am patiently hoping for more Teyla character development in the coming episodes that go beyond her fighting abilities. In fact, I just finished reading Fledgling, by Octavia Butler. I highly recommend it. Its theme of vampire/human hybrids immediately made me think of Teyla and her relationship with the Wraith.
Know what? I don't have any witty comments or snide remarks. Just wanted to say a hearty "Thank You!" to you and everyone else who works so hard to bring us the best sci-fi on TV.
And honestly I don't hold out much hope for the Leafs this evening, they've lost the last three home openers and there are some walking wounded out there, but I think it has the best mix of age and experience/youth and bad haircuts that they've had for a while.
Wonder what history would have been if Ballard never got his hands on...never mind. Sounds like a 'quantum mirror' ep to me...;)
Hey Joe!
I know this is probably the wrong place to complain about this, but you said you read all the comments... so, here you go, haha. ;) I'm upset about the Season 8 DVD's, too! Pretty much the only reason I was going to buy it was for "Threads," and now I find out that it's only the 42-minute version, and doesn't have commentary? That's upsetting. :( I mean, I'll probably still buy it anyway, but I'm definitely not as excited about it anymore. Do you think there's anyone you can yell at for us? haha.
I saw Serenity on Friday... it was great! I only saw a couple episodes of Firefly, but I still loved it.
Keep up the great work!
Nicole
One has to hope that Carter's pathetic love life is indeed as dead as Kawalski. When ARE we going to see the episode when she goes into therapy for her psychotic delusion that she has a "relationship" with Sir? Erotomania I believe they call it... Should have 'em rolling in the aisles, anway.
By the way if you don't go to see Serenity on the biggest screen you can find in Vancouver you will be doing yourself (and it) a big disservice. Yes cinemas are annoying but unless Vancouver audiences are very different from around here this was one film where everyone was so rapt they shut the hell up all the way to the end. Don't miss it! And take notes, frankly you could really learn a lot from Whedon's deft balancing of action AND character development. He writes amazing women too...
He did mention anything about the 60 minute Threads on the DVD. That's just BS.
Hey Joe wow, done with season 9 already cool. On to season 10! Oh yeah babe!
You guys can complain right to MGM at MGM.com and go to the bottom and click "contact". Region 1 Dvds are well done I thought except for the freakin short version of "Threads". What the hell is up with that. We pay for them and they jip us. And than no commentary on "Threads". Double jip. Someone commented that "Citizen Joe" does not have a commentary but it does. ALl episodes have commentaries except "Threads" on region 1 DVD box sets. I will complain each day until they send out a replacement DVD for that disk.
Hey Joe. Your wishy washy answers piss us off there bud. Say you do not know the answer but don't give us crap. Didn't RDA ever tell you not do dumb things down for us? That to treat the fans with more respect? I think that he did. So pleased do. Thanks. Your answer that Cam and Carter will share command of Sg-1 is just so much well ....cow pooh. The show stated in 901 that Cam is the commander of SG-1. So stand up and be a man and admit it to the fans. Stand behind what you make fact on the show.
He would admit it, auntie em!, but Browder comes off as so weak and pathetic that no one believes he's actually in charge. So far, he's been completely dwarfed by the other three heavyweights.
Well, you're doing better than me, I only skim the first 50 or so.
I have to say, I totally agree about the theatre thing. I went to the midnight showing and I almost came to blows with an annoying browncoat wannabe who insisted on yelling "serenity f*cking rules!" repeatedly througout the movie. If it had been any other movie, I woulda left. I'm v. jealous about the icecream blowout, have you thought about frozen custard? I have had some serious daydreams about the burnt carmel with a frozen custard base. Taystee!.
anyhow, I'm (im)patiently waiting for the second half of the season to start, what spoilage I've managed to glean sounds v. exciting. have a great "break" and I'm sure we'll be begging for S10 details in no time at all. Spoilerwhores are needy folk.
hey!
just wanted to say congrats, and i hope both series get renewed. so far it's been great, and altho i've been skeptical of the many changes in sg1, i really like the direction is evolving in. now that i think of it, i've been a fan of sg1 since 1998. damn! i'm old. ;'
yay!denethor... was watching ROTK for the 45289652432th time, and he's just so wicked cool. "the joy luck club" is one of my fave movies. how funny... :)
as for sam's love-life, well, all i can say is that i both feel for her and feel WITH her. it's hard out there... :) call me romantic, but i've been hoping she'll get together with o'neill since... hell, forever... it's just meant to be... so, yeah, it'd be nice if we at least got a hint of it. i know they're military, but they're human beings first and foremost, so, if they really like eachother a much as YOU made it look like they do, it'd be a pitty for them not to get together somehow/sometime.
Joe! First time commenting, but long time fan (and lurker).
Just wanted to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed Season 9 so far, and congrats on finishing up the filming! I'll admit I was skeptical at first, but this season has turned out excellently.
Also, thank you so much for even bothering to keep the humble fans informed of all this directly. You're doing us such a huge favor.
I'm confidant that a Season 10 would both welcome by the fans and well-handled by the cast and crew. And if there is no Season 10, we'll have an outstanding nine years to remember fondly (and watch on DVD forever). Plus, you always have your reiki training. ^_____^
Serenity was okay. I've never seen the show, so maybe I wasn't able to appreciate it as much.
Totally agree with you about movie theatres. Way too expensive for the service. Much easier to wait six months for the movie to come out on DVD and watch it at your convience.
Batman Begins was very, very good. Throughly examines the whole process and characters instead of relying on flashy effects.
Funny, I just saw John Noble at a convention a month ago. I was wearing my Chia Teal'c shirt. I hope he'll play a bad guy. He has such fun doing a good job as a bad guy. And my favorite JAG guest star will be on too!
I've seen Serenity. I enjoyed it very much. It was all the (non-sci-fi) part of the family could talk about the next day. A plus for the movie theatre: on the big screen, you can see all the details.
you said - "Circumstances have a habit of changing, and that applies to everything, from exploring Sam's love life to Kawalsky rejoining the team."
sam's love life? as in her and jack? PLEASE!!! i've been holding my breath (and passing out for some reason) to hear/SEE how their relationship is going forward. speaking for all shippers, PLEASE!
take care, joe.
sally :D
Hey Joe,
I would also like to request your help concerning the Season 8 boxset of SG-1, and the episode "Threads" in specific. "Threads" is one of my all-time favorite episodes of SG-1 and this really is an outrage. Any help you can give would be much appreciated.
Thanks, and keep up the good work!
-Jeremy
Just adding another voice to the din, Joe. Anything you could do about the DVDs would be appreciated.
Hey Joe,
You know, it's amazing that after the advent of the Ori, the intro of new characters and the departure of old how it all comes back down to the team...the relationships (I don't just mean shippy here...but the way they interact) and our ability to connect with the characters we've loved for years on a personal level.
That's what's so far missing for me this season I think. I miss that interpersonal connecting and bonding. Right now they're just a group of people who wear similar clothing rather than a team. I miss that heart and I'm hoping to see it soon.
I also find it interesting that several of the issues/controversies/topics of interest involve Sam...command, ship, etc...one would think she were truly a valuable character on the show. ;) I hope Amanda knows how much she's appreciated and loved. Hug her daily for all of us, mmmkay???
Restating what I said before, I hope we see something on screen regarding the leadership thing because believe it or not the debate rages on as to why Sam was dissed since she's been groomed for this position for years vs. she left so too bad so sad, etc...
And as for ship, a lot of us would like to see something on screen here too next season (yes I firmly believe there will be one). BTW, although I recognize a snarky sense o' humor when I see it as I share that personality quirk, I get a little nervous when the concepts of ship and Kawalsky rejoining the cast are lumped together as though there were an equal chance of either happening. I mean, come on Joe...you gotta play nice too. ;)
My hope is that as long as we see enough KICKBUTT!Sam, there will be enough balance there to have nice subtle or not so subtle shippy moments. Nothing much, I mean we're not asking for it to be a primary or secondary element of an episode, just some scenes sprinkled throughout the season as a nod to the fans who have followed that arc for FOREVER.
About RDA...if you have a chance, could you do us a favor please and let him know he's loved and dearly missed and a whole slew of us want him back...not permanently as we respect and honor his wishes...but for lots and lots of guest spots as his family and other commitments permit. Hopefully, your (TPTB) relationship with him is still all good as I've been getting some "not so good" vibes about the whole thing. And IF things are all good or whatever, is there a chance we could see alot of Jack in episode 200???
The DVD situation...I agree with the above. It's unbelievable. The cut version of Threads was just awful as it took out several key moments in the development of the episode and ruined one of the most important episodes in the series for all the lead characters. And missing the commentary too??? Had I known about either of these things, I NEVER would have bought the DVDs as I get them PRIMARILY for the commentaries. What, is MGM planning to sell a special edition DVD with the complete version of Threads with commentary down the road? What was the POINT?!?? I and MANY others feel royally gypped.
Back to more important things...Black Forest Cake ice cream?? *Mary Beth shudders with delight* RECIPES MAN!!!!! Post 'em please!!! Please?!??
Completely non sequitur question of the week...will we see Hermiod again??? I Just love him and his snark.
Lastly...you really do read ALL these comments??? Yikes. I hope you have your asbestos longjohns on. :p
Until next time! :D

I know you get this alot but I think you are all doing a great job on both shows. I can't wait for the break to be over and for next year :)
The region 2 boxsets (or at least the Dutch and German ones) have the complete version of Threads. Funny how that varies worldwide...
Just another voice to express the fans opinions about the Season 8 DVD BoxSet... its a disgrace. The lesser version of Threads, lack of commentary on some episodes, and no especially amazing special features. There were only 20 episodes in this season compared to the previous 22, so there was plenty of room for the longer version of Threads and for some more extra goodies.
We know this isn't your fault and are certainly not blamming you in the least. Just asking for some help to get the studio to hear us.
You always talk about how you watch TV shows on DVD, so surely you can understand our frustration. The studio producing the DVDs have really let the fans down.
Mmmm. As usual all the icecreams sound wonderful. It's tempting, if a little chilly at the thought, sitting here reading about them all. It's definitely not icecream weather in my part of the UK anymore but you're making me hungry. :p (and now I'm curious to watch Nip/Tuck too)
With all those recipes you should use that as your fallback plan. ;)
Have you managed to check out House M.D. yet? (I was going to recommend it until I looked back and realised someone already had) I admit I've only seen one episode, but I'm desparate to see more. Sadly, for me at least, the DVD is only out in the US so far.
Dark Angel's also something interesting if you haven't seen if before. I figure this one is so obvious for scifi shows someone might have said it before, or you've already seen it, but...
Anyway, I can recommend three shows. Not vast drama series or anything, but amusing none the less. Rex the Runt, Stressed Eric and Spaced.
First is animation made by Aardman Animations who did Wallace and Gromit, Chicken run etc. For some reason despite being UK made it's nigh impossible to buy in the UK.
The second is a shortlived cartoon (originally book) series about the illfated Eric - there's an American version too I believe, but the cartoon version of the series is generally hard to track down.
(Robbie the Reindeer is also pretty bizarrely funny, another Aardman production, but just a one off thing rather than a series.)
Spaced is a rather crazy British comedy from Simon Pegg, who wrote Shaun of the Dead. Though I figure you might have heard of this already, I'm just not going to sifting through however many gazillion comments there are. I sympathise with you actually taking the time to read them all - especially when there are often plenty less than polite rants masquerading as comments.
Anyway, congratulations on wrapping up the seasons, hope you have fun in the hiatus. :)
Serenity Rocks! Great movie:)
So will there be pictures of the cast dressed to the nines (I bet some of them even looked like tens..I mean Lexa Doig was there right) from the wrap party?
So the next big event is the 200th episode right:) I hope you have a better episode in the works for that one than the (unmentionable word inserted here) we got for a 100th ep. That would be the best point to have RDA do a cameo if he wants to..if not..well we'll just continue to move along without him.
Saw an awesome animated (or was it computer generated) movie the other dak called Ark. You should check it out.
Well it sounds like I'm lucky I don't have the funds to spend on Stargate DVD's right now..maybe by the time I do the S8 one's will be more worth the money.
Keep up the good work.
Pay no attention, Joe. Wormhole Xtreme was a terrific hundreth episode. It was certainly much more appropriate than some overly sentimental drivel or a huge blowout actionfest.
Hey Joe, Ivon just passed the buck on the DVD question. Here's hoping someone up there at Bridge is willing to help the fans out. We like SG-1. We want the show on DVD. We just want all of the show. I'm pretty sure you can relate to that. You seem to be into DVDs.
Wbo is that Ivon guy? Says he it the extra on the dvd producer but he has nothing to do with the commentaries? What is up with that. So what commentaries are on the broadcast versions because I don't think so. So they must "produce" those after they film the episode. And that the commentaries are put on the episodes AFTER the fact. So that puts the ball back into his lap. All he said was that it was not his problem. Nice. Thanks bud. He even had the balls to state maybe it was because they ran out of space on the DVDs. Um, Ivon the season is 2 episodes SHORTER!!!!! Means more space not less.
So Joe. I know that has nothing to do with you but that Ivon dude is talking out the side of his mouth and disrespecting our intellegence. Seems like they are trying to dumb things down again for us fans. Didn't I already say something about how RDA taught you guys NOT to do that to us fans? ***shaking my head*** seems when RDA the producer left the show that you guys forgot some of the goodness that is RDA. Prehaps he should come back and show you guys how to do things right again.
Smile Joe. Life is hard especially when you are handed the truth in your lap and you don't like it.
You know, the whole DVD screw up is just representative of the overall drop in quality we've been getting lately. It's really disappointing. And you know what else? It's not things like Mr. Anderson leaving that will cost Stargate fans, it's things like this. How unprofessional.
Ivon produces the extras, but he doesn't get final say so on which material gets put on what region DVD and he wouldn't have anything to do with the full/cut version of an actual episode, either.
Joe has even less to do with it.
Yap at MGM/Sony/Whoever. Don't take it out on Joe, Ivon & the gang. Vent your frustration where it'll do some good. As I recall, even Joe has complained about the DVDs. Or at least I think he's at least commented about his lack of control of such things.
And auntie em, how about chilling the hell out and not attacking Ivon? He isn't deliberately lying to us, he's telling the truth as he knows it. There could be more to it than you/we realize. The info could be coded onto the DVDs in a different way. Or Sony could be cheap. Who knows? But for pity's sake, don't attack Ivon.
Who attacked. I asked him not to talk to us like we are dumb. I don't give a rats ass who he is. Just don't treat us like we are dumb. Which is what he did. Are you telling me that he did not know that the episodes went from 22 to 20? Of course he did. So if anything that frees up disk space it does not decrease it. All I ask for is honesty which is what I typed to him. Sony has pumped MORE money in to Stargate since it took over not less. So there goes your little theory. You maybe star struck but I am not. If you lied to me I would have the same distain for you as I do to these guys. Joe lied when he said that they were giving command to both Sam and Cam. This is a bold face lie and Joe knows it. So again they attempt to dumb us down. I asked Joe to be a man and state if he knows something or does not. I could respect that. I do not respect passing the buck and lies. Honesty even if that is that he does not know the answer and says that.
Oh and please and Joes comment: ""Circumstances have a habit of changing, and that applies to everything, from exploring Sam's love life to Kawalsky rejoining the team."
Just HOW does that instill respect for the fan? It is disrespectful to throw that out like that. It is the fans that makes Stargate. Without us it would be cancelled. All I ask is for them to have respect for us because why should I respect a person who lies to me?
Please go and be starstuck somewhere else. Your drool is getting on my shoes.
Geez, Shadowmaat, would you please stop spamming these blogs? I mean, come on, do you really think Joe, Ivon, or anyone else really wants to hear from you every ten minutes? Do you think we really care what you're planning to do with your "life"? You consistently remind everyone how much you hate the product that these men are responsible for, then you post comment after comment about how much you like them and try to suck up to them. Do us all a favor; think twice before hitting the "Login and Publish" button.
I'm saying that maybe he knows more about the DVD-making process than we do, but he's assumed that we know it, too. There could be a reason for the lack of space on the DVDs which will be unaffected by how many eps there are. They could be using a different process to code the DVDs which takes up the extra space. I don't know. But until I do know, I'm not going to blame Ivon for "treating us like idiots" or for "lying" about what he said.
Actually, I wouldn't blame him, anyway, since choosing the specific cuts of episodes that go onto DVDs isn't his job.
He also admitted to being very tired. *shrug* Maybe he wasn't paying attention or maybe he didn't feel like going into detail at the time.
I can't say whether you're dumb or not, but from where I'm sitting, you sure seemed to be pissed off and snapping at anyone who comes near you. That isn't a very effective way to behave, either.
And if you think my drool is bad, now, you should see how I am when I'm talking about Martin Gero. ;)
I just mailed my season 8 box set back to Amazon.com. It was a very cathartic experience. I do hope Sony/MGM fix this mistake, but I am prepared to just stop watching the show. It's a little suicidal to disrespect fans this way.
Threads isn't the long version?!?! WHY? After hoping and praying the networks would take the 90 min, we dont even get it?! Dammit all! And my set was shipped today! I wonder if it can be returned. This was the culmination of 8 years of excellent TV. This was THE episode. I was so excited when this episode aired, I left a weekend lan party and drove to the next town 30min away to my mom's to watch it at 11, then got back to the party after 1AM. I've been checked out dorm mailbox everyday since the 4th to see if it was there for Threads and Citizen Joe. Threads made me laugh and cry and think and wonder. We had a major death, comfort, character development, end of Anubis and Oma, and Fish! We had fishing Joe and it was just the best and I'm sad now. If anything, anything at all can be done, please help. And yes, I realize our anon friend is going to come on and mock me but that isn't going to make me change one word because it's what I believe and what I think should be done to make things right by the fans.
We need to know what happened to Jack. Make it as flexible or whatever as you need but it needs to be addressed.
Browder and the writers need to find out who Mitchell is. He isn't Jack and trying to be is an insult to them both.
Someone needs to take control of SG1. Should it be Sam? Of course. It makes sense but if it isn't, it is still better to have one and be clear.
Did you really read all of my drivel? If so, say "I love Stargate!" Kidding, kidding.
Cancelled my DVD order.
Emailed MGM and they don't care. Said to email Sony.
Sony hasn't replied.
Who cares? SG-1 has sucked since Malllozzi turned it into the "let's copy whatever movie/TV show I rented last week" anyway. ANd now he uses this stupid blog to get SG-1 fans to help him rip off shit.
Just go die Joe, NOW.
Haha lol at all the whingers over the DVD's. Yes people, it IS actually an evil conspiracy by MGM/Sony/Joe Mallozzi/The Little Green Men to take over the world. Start wearing your tin foil caps, because they'll be after you personally next.
And yes, attacking one of the producers on the show about the DVD problems is going to solve all your problems, because they aren't actually involved with the DVD's at all. And neither is Ivon Bartok (which if you'd bothered to read his blog, you'd notice he actually says as much...)
And it's also funny that only the Region 1 viewers got 'screwed over' too. Go buy the Region 2 or 4 sets instead.
Still, I suppose there's nothing stopping people having their little whinge (OMG I LIEK, DIDN'T GET WHAT I WANT. MUST GO ON INTERWEB TO FLAME11!!!!)
And who the hell are you guys to start accusing someone of lying because of what they said in an online blog? It just screams to me of so called fans getting all bitchy because the writers DARE to make characters different to their own percieved image. Which has probably been shaped by the fandom itself in the first place.
'Disrespect', 'cathartic', 'bold faced lie', 'dissapointing', 'unprofessional' - whatever. The only response you'll get from is a STFU NOOBS, while having a little chuckle at the silly people on 'Teh Interweb'
*yawns*. This should be a happy community. Stargate is the bringer of Happiness (for me anyways, its so cute and loveable).
Stop complaining about the most insignificant things, otherwise your just gonna make urself sad (too late i suppose).
And you guys call ME bad?? Jeez.
Whatever happened to being happy? To enjoying the show and sharing your love of it with friends and strangers? When did flaming other fans and bashing the makers of the show become de rigueur?
You know things are bad when I have to be the voice of temperance and reason. ;)
Then stop being the voice of reason so we can go on being blissful in our ignorance!

That is absolutely uncalled for. Nothing happening about at TV show should make someone say something so nasty to another human being.
Sheesh!
The 90-minute version of Threads isn't on the DVD. Wow.
I've got seven seasons of SG-1 on DVD. I won't be buying Season 8. Why in the WORLD wouldn't we get the full version?
"And it's also funny that only the Region 1 viewers got 'screwed over' too. Go buy the Region 2 or 4 sets instead."
Why should I have to buy an alternative region DVD? Is it too much to ask for the full episodes on region 1, especially when you consider that both Stargates are US/Canadian productions?
It's too bad that you get your jollies from the misfortunes of others.
O'neill, Barrett, Orlin, Martouf, McKay--that Carter really, really gets around doesn't she? Way to turn a good character into a total slut. Good role model there.
Hey Joe, what kind of time frame should we go with before writing off the DVDs as a total loss? Should we expect any kind of response, or are we totally shafted on this one? Because I've gotta tell ya, at this point I could care less if there's a season ten or season three or not. It's not really worth it, and the show isn't that good to put up with this.
Hey Stargate S9 is the best season yet and I love Stargare.

Do not attack Joe like that. It is uncalled for. No personal attacks needed.
Shadowmat....I see you are so loved here. Everyone hates brown nosers.
Now. Like I said,Joe did lie about who is in command of Sg-1. Buddy. Trueth is always best because when you lie it comes back and bites you in the ass like that little statment of yours did. Now. That is in the past and I expect forthrightness from you in the future. It demonstrates respect for us the fans and than we can give it back. Deal?
I think that Ivon and Joe may not have a say in how the DVDs are made but they do have a say in tell MGM and SONY just how pissed we are. Our voice is strong and clear. SONY better listen. I know lots of people who sent their DVDs back.
Hey Joe,
I really don't think you're gonna need anything to "fall back on" but reikki is always a good thing to know.
You can amaze all your friends and family with it by telling them "I can fix that" when they have a pain or ache and you'll be surprised how it will just "fire off" all by itself.
Let us know how it went after you've had your training.
waterfall
If you are so upset about this, why aren't you over on the Sony official boards for the show making your complaints and not here harassing Joe and Ivon. They only work for Sony, they aren't running the company. Go tell it to the Sony people themselves.
Shadowmaat you cannot hide behind that new handle. I can still tell it is you. HAHAHAHA
It would be a bit hypocritical to whine here but not go directly to Sony and MGM. Thank goodness I have done both. And have done so every single day since I got my box set. And will continue to do so every day until they fix their screw up.
Why can we not discuss things here even if you do not like it? I am not tell you to buzz off even though I cannot stand your sucking up brown nosing. Live and let live I always say.
"Serenity Now!"
I loved Joss Whedon's film - everything the first 3 episodes of Star Wars should have been - action, humour and characters we care about. I went with folks who never saw Firefly and they loved it too. See it on a weeknight or matinee and avoid the rude people.
Looking forward to seeing some progress on the SG-1 team dynamics in the back half of this season.
Nip/Tuck has definitely ratcheted up the crazy this season. Are you still watching Rome? cheers,
To the COWARDLY NIT who said the following:
"O'neill, Barrett, Orlin, Martouf, McKay--that Carter really, really gets around doesn't she? Way to turn a good character into a total slut. Good role model there."
It's amazing you left off the ONE person she actually had a REAL relationship with in EIGHT YEARS...Pete Shanahan. Yes folks, one sexual relationship in EIGHT YEARS...what a floozie.
Whereas Daniel, Teal'c and Jack have each had several bed buddies a piece...but apparently you missed that little fact. By comparison, Sam's been practially a NUN.
So if this is how you gauge whether or not you respect your onscreen role models, then you should really be "tsk tsking" the guys here right? I mean, what kind of role models are they jumping from bed to bed over the years??? Do the math. They've slept with enough women to fill the first string line up of the WNBA.
Sam's an incredible role model. She has affected my life personally in ways that I cannot even articulate and it offends me when cowards slither from under their rocks to sling mud like that.
So how's about you get your facts straight before you bash her. Better yet, don't bash her at all.
Here's to more Sam in Season TEN!
Mary Beth
Eh, dont worry about those idiots ÜberSG-1Fan. It probably comes from the fact that they themselves can't get as much as what Sam does (which has been one person in 8 years. What's less than one? ;)) so they take their frustrations out on a character that is way cooler than what they could ever be.
Calling the character a 'slut' helps them justify their own little existence.
Sam Carter is among the top five strongest female characters on televison today. There are those who simply cannot handle that fact, so they lash out with ignorant denunciations; both little and loud. Never we mind about the little people, right ÜberSG-1Fan? You go girl! ;)
"O'neill, Barrett, Orlin, Martouf, McKay--that Carter really, really gets around doesn't she? Way to turn a good character into a total slut. Good role model there."
The only person I see turning Sam into a slut is the person who posted this. Great way to slander a good character, and such a good role model for polite diplomacy, as well.
To Joe: Keep up the good work, there are those of us who appreciate what you do, and admire you for putting up with the negativity of fandom. You'll also have my extreme gratitude if you keep Sam a competent, capable soldier and scientist in future eps!
Cheers,
Strix varia
Amanda is a slut, Joe needs to die, Ivon is a liar. Some folks need some "Happy" pills. ;O)
Belive it or not, most of us DO appreciate everything you folks do to bring us SG1 and SGA. *Crossing fingers* for Seasons 10 and 3.
Well, Joe, I bet you're having a nice laugh at all these poor people who seem to think that not getting the right version of Threads is going to ruin their lives. It was way over the top to say "I'm gonna quit watching SG1 because of this crappy DVD", and I thought so even before I found out that MGM's willing to swap the discs.
On behalf of a whole lot of people, I'd like to apologize for the horrible attitude of the loudmouthed minority of fandom. I hope you're not taking any of this too seriously. ^___^
Now now, I wouldn't mock the fans who had an issue with Threads. Perhaps all the complaints on forums and via email were the reason why MGM now is willing to release the entire episode? Do you think they would correct their error if no one said anything? Ha!
MGM would be wise to learn from Universal and their BSG DVD sets...
If having a "relationship" (and I use that term loosely for all but one of them) with five men you have never slept with makes you a slut..... Good Lord! I don't even know what that makes me! Sam Carter is a great role model. I love her, my daughters love her, and as soon as my son stops thinking girls have cooties, he'll probably love her, too.

well, one in 9 years would be less... :p
McKay is mine he don't count! He doesn't even like Carter! He just acts that way so she doesn't feel bad about losing her "touch". *** Dreams delusionally no matter how much evidence there is to the contrary ***
You forgot Narim though :P Not that im agreeing with the whole slut thing...
Crikey, the comments in this blog are really a curate's egg :) Thank you for persevering for us all.
My penny's worth is this... S9 to date has been terrific, and the standout for me was the arc of the opening episodes of the series. Operatic, intense, sincere, intriguing, - great writing, great acting, great villains, great directing, great music - in other words, incredibly good telly.
It feels that the cast have played it straight and down the line this season, and by so doing have relayed a respect for the script and the audience.
I can't wait to see the second half, and to see Mitchell come into his own. I'm hopeful that we'll see the Mitchell and "wingman" Jackson dynamic develop even more - I'm believing these guys like each other (helped by playtime basketball scenes et al) and I'd also like to see some of those wonderful SG1 intense scenes that give us the "moments" we love to revisit and cherish.
The ratings from the UK screenings appear to be arriving and I think are looking pretty good, so fingers crossed for the production team and cast for a Series 10. You deserve it :)
PS: Kiwifruit tossed into an ice-cream mix adds both a healthy dose of vitamin C (to help offset the guilt) and an interesting colour addition!
People should try baby food... it tastes a little ricey at first but some of it is really nice. (the custards and deserts ne ways). Stay away from the meets and vegetables though....
I meant meats... my spelling is shocking!
Glad you're enjoying Alias. If you're looking for something new and haven't already seen it, I'd suggest Lost. It's a great show and the S1 DVD set is sweet.
If you're looking for something a bit more eclectic, however, I'd suggest Nero Wolfe. It ran for two years on A & E and both seasons are available on DVD now (I think there are only about two dozen eps total). It stars Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin (I was SO glad to see him on SG-1, even if in a limited role). Also Kari Matchett (Invasion) recurs in different roles. It's a mystery and while I don't usually go in for mysteries, this series is quirky and funny. It is well-written and I got attached to the characters quickly. I just got finished rewatching the second season and I found it just as charming as I did the first time. Overall, a fun show.
Had to laugh about the rum cake. My neighbor makes rum cake that is to die for so I totally understand. :D
Hey Amanda is a slut because she slept with one man in 9 years? What about MS who eats em up like candy? Come here MS we can have fun together.
Oh and they DID recall the other disc because we complained so much their email said so......
Joe if you helped cool. Thanks for passing along our VERY MUCH displease at the screw up.
Um, why are we suddenly talking about the actors?
If you want to diss a character, OK. But the actors should be left out of it.
I don't know what's wrong with some people. Sam's a great character and by no stretch of the imagination could be considered the "s word." Joe--looking forward to a season 10 (fingers crossed) with some great team episodes.

Joe, just another long, long, longtime fan of the show begging you guys not to make Vala a regular next year. She doesn't fit with the team, and she barely fits with the show. Those first five episodes of this season were the worst of the entire series. It was all I could do to not give up of Stargate entirely. It's also worth saying that seeing Vala every week would ruin the character. And earlier someone left a comment calling Sam a slut. Well, Vala is as slutty as they come, and she drags Stargate right down into gutter with her. So, please stand up to Scifi, and stand up to a very vocal minority of fans; don't make Vala part of the team. It wouldn't be Stargate anymore.
Joe, just wanted to say I have loved the first half of Season 9. It was nice to have RDA with a few small scenes, but I am not missing him the way I thought.
Claudia makes a great addition to the mix, as does Ben, Lexa and Beau.
Please tell Alan Prototype was fantastic. The Ties That Bind was also my personal fav this season, so well done you and PM.
All in all, I am loving the new line up of actors, and think Michael and Chris are having a ball acting off them. There is a real energy to the show this season that I feel from the acting, writing and production as well. Exciting guest stars and recurring actors to boot. Woohoo.
Please pass on my thanks and congrats to all on set and in the production offices on a job very well done.
Hi Joe
You have to watch the Big Damn Movie on the Big Screen as every little bit gets us closer to the Big Damn Sequel. Didn't realise how bad things are (with regard to cinemas)in your neck of the woods. I've been pretty fortunate in mine.
Looking forward to Batman Begins DVD myself (assuming that that was what you meant). One of the better things I've seen this year... on par with BDM.

Joe, this whole leadership debacle is incredible. Surely TPTB knew what would happen when they stripped Carter of her command. Surely TPTB knew how implausible it was to give it to Mitchell rather than some other SGC personnel. Surely TPTB were aware of the hypocrisy of Mitchell's "slick resume" and his "exactly no years in offworld travel", given the fact that such deterrents prevented a fourth from joining SG-1 last year in the episode Lockdown. A little consistency in the reasoning in the show would be nice. There is simply no justification in the story for Mitchell "leading" SG-1 over Carter, Daniel, or Teal'c. Hell, there's no justification for his leading over Col. Reynolds, Col. Dixon, or Col. Pierce. Except pork, that is. Maybe Mitchell's daddy is a big oil tycoon who got his son a sweet posting in return for passing some shoddy legislation?
I get the production concerns and conditions. But they don't translate onscreen. They have to do with Ben Browder and Amanda Tapping and Sci-Fi, not Cameron Mitchell, Sam Carter, and the SGC. Some kind of rational, even half-assed explanation for the new setup would have been appreciated, rather than ingnoring it due to lack of a plausible one.
Head on over to the Mitchell As Leader thread on the forums for a glimpse into the sound reasoning being supplied for the current setup. They include "he was there first", "he doesn't do anything else on the team so he has to lead", "I'm a Ben fanboy/fangirl so his character is OK by me", and "Carter is a terrible character/officer/leader". Don't miss the "Carter can only do tech" and the "I don't want to watch female dominated show" lines of thought either.
Hope you're satisfied with how badly you've blown it on this one. I don't think a better job could possibly be done.
hey joe,
hope season 9 was a blast to work on. i've yet to see it, starts on tuesday over here. looking forward to it, although i get the feeling i'm really going to miss Carter for the first few episodes, but i trust you guys enough to make a great show, as you have done for the last 8 years (or 4 in your case).
looking forward to seeing sam kick some bum, teal'c hopefully have some equally great development and bum kicking moments, seeing how scruffy daniel is in the first few episodes (i've heard things :-S )and getting to know some new characters. i'm a sam fan, but i wont bust your chops about the leadership issue. I'd love to see you guys get a green light on season 10, so best of luck with that.
i will ask if you guys recorded commentaries on every episode for season 8, and will you be doing any for season 9? love the commentaries, but understand if you don't have time to do any.
you're a lucky dog with your home theatre. and also with being able to get OZ on DVD. can't get it on region 2, and it was a fantastic show.
thanks for 8 (hopefully 9 and 10) great years of a great show.( and thanks for giving us threads and moebius.),
Stargate Barbie.
What are you guys doing to Ben Browder? Ben is the most talented, gifted actor on television. I'm not kidding! When you cast him I figured that he was cast to be the star, but instead he's been playing fourth fiddle in the quartet. It's this kind of treatment that makes me beg for Farscape to be back on the air. If you don't give Ben more screen time than the other three actors the rest of the season, then I hope Richard Dean Anderson comes back and Ben leaves. You guys don't deserve to have him. I'd rather see him unemployed and out of work than dealing with a bunch of hack writers and fellow cast mates like you guys!
Hey Joe, remember whem SG-1 used to be about the team? I mean, it was always about the stories, but underlying all of that was the relationships the four members of SG-1 had with each other. And it's that something that the show has lost this season. I mean, come on, I don't think that Teal'c has said more than two lines to Sam. Sam with Daniel and Sam. Heck, Teal'c and Daniel were the only original cast members for the first five episodes, and they had all of what, a few scenes with almost no dialogue? I get that right now you guys want everyone to have to talk to Mitchell. Heck, so far Mitchell doesn't do anything but spew platitudes and look pretty. Maybe if SG-1 started acting like SG-1, started acting like they have for the past eight years, things would be a little more upbeat for the show. Right now, the characterization has regressed back into season 2 at best; though, I'm not sure the characters have ever been this bland nor the team interaction this nonexistant and forced.
Well, I guess this is the LAST time JM's gonna allow us to post comments... We're all using it like a freaking thread. Sheesh.
Anyway, Joe (if you even make it down this far), you're cool. We may complain about the nefarious "PTB" all the time, but at the end of the day, everyone knows that you must be doing something right, or we wouldn't find such pleasure in complaining all of the time. :)
That said, I'm interested to see how the Sam/Cam Command will work during the rest of the season with what many would consider to be "canon" truths. For some, a blog response doesn't cut it. I'm also interested to see how the team will work out. If it doesn't work out this season, that's OK. You'll have a chance this December to start rectifying that. ;)
Oh yeah, as I'm sure you already know, you should really pay no attention to the extremist freaks - er, I mean, fans - who express their hatred of a FICTITIOUS CHARACTER at every opportunity. Forget the happy pills, some people just need a lobatomy. The kind performed with a single dull, spoon.
Anywho, keep doing what you're doing. We'll always be here. Same time, same place. Same whiny, demanding attitudes.
But you wouldn't have it any other way...
OK, so maybe you would.
Yeah, sorry. Earlier I said that you should check out the "Mitchell As Leader" thread in the forums. Don't. In fact, don't ever listen to anybody on this board about what you should do with the show. My God, the nutters are out in full force! Is it a full moon? There is absolutely no rationality to be had around here.
Please, Joe, I'm begging you here. Do not view the wacky, baseless opinions that can be found here at GateWorld as an accurate cross section of how fans feel about SG-1. Make your own show--mistakes, screw ups, network demands and all. But when you're in the writing room spinning stories, don't ever use the arugment "It's what the fans want. I saw it on GateWorld." Obviously all the loonies from Bedlam made their way over here. Shame, really, this used to be a nice place.
as far as tv dvd goes...
You have to watch the first season of Wiseguy, it is arguably the single greatest season of television ever produced.
The first season comes in two box sets.

MORE SAM - please!!
Hopefully most of her absence and little screen time (so far) in S-9 is due to mommy responsibilities and a desired reduced schedule.
Would love to see more team emotion and in depth character stories played out. Characters over the past 3 seasons oddly seem to bounce right back from death of friends/family, missing team mates, change in bosses, ended relationships, etc. Wow, if only real life were so easy!
New guy is okay - but he's getting way too much screen time.
Agreed, how about a little more of the three characters we love and a little less of the new characters we tolerate.
That was the big controversy? Jonas? Well, my vote (as if this was a democracy) is to definitely bring him back! Just don't kill him. Even if you never have him on the show again, just don't kill him off. I get enough of that heartache from Joss Whedon, thank you very much. I liked Jonas. He's one of those characters that, for a while (that is, until Daniel returned), I kind of didn't want to like him, as he replaced a character I liked, but I just couldn't help it. He's just such a wonderful, upbeat, wonderful character. I do hope to see him again. And maybe him and Mitchell can reminisce about replacing a regular.
Joe, glad to see you're keeping up with Alias, Arrested Development, Oz, and Firefly. We've got many of the same shows in our queues.
One thing though: Are you EVER gonna get around to finishing Buffy/Angel? We chatted awhile back and you & your wife had hit a roadbloack during S2 before all the MAJOR stuff happens. I'm dyin' to know if you ever got around to picking up where you left off. See you online!
Ok, sorry to be such a slacker in replying to your blogs. I really enjoy them but life is so full. Glad you are sticking with Alias even thought they really POd me this season. If you think your wife was mad at S1 just wait! I will get over it I hope, but maybe not :(
Enjoy your hiatus....But we all hate to wait until January for the second half! LOL Thanks for keeping us informed.
btw, I enjoyed Serenity also!
You did an insane amount of Ice Creams this week!!! What were you thinking? They all sound delicious though. Love still, Purple
