I'm sorry to hear that FOX pulled the plug on Arrested Development, the funniest show on television (as opposed to that lame sitcom with the obnoxious father married to the hot wife - Hey, if you don't know which one I'm talking about, take your pick).
I've noticed more and more friends getting off the Lost bandwagon. And I guess I can empathize. As much as I enjoyed the first season, the second season has progressed at a snail's pace. Whereas Seinfeld was a show about nothing, it feels like, this season, Lost is a show about a lot - where nothing happens. That said, I'm sticking it out mainly because of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's Mr. Echo and Josh Holloway's Sawyer.
Finished season 4 of Alias and I realized long ago that the way to really enjoy this show is to accept it as pure scifi (Prophecies and Zombies and Clones, oh my). I'm really looking forward to checking out episode 2 of season 5 which seemed to enrage so many fans.
Speaking of which - over 550+ comments on my last blog entry. Lots of angry Carter fans. Lots of angry Daniel fans. Lots of angry Jack fans. Not so many angry Teal'c fans. Come on, angry Teal'c fans! Let's hear from you!
Well, we've started spinning for season 10 of SG-1 and season 3 of Atlantis. I believe the deals are almost done and we have our line-up set. Last week, we concentrated on Atlantis, coming up with 10-12 story ideas and spinning five. I'm especially looking forward to "Delicious Fat Guy" and "Wraith Fight Club" although, sadly, I have a feeling these clever titles will change.
Meanwhile, the back half of seasons 9 of SG-1 and 3 of Atlantis are shaping up nicely as we wade through the endless mixes. Wil Waring did a phenomenal job directing Collateral Damage which is one of the darkest SG-1's we've done in a while. Maury Chaykin delivers a terrific return performance as Nerus in Off the Grid. Check out the great job our visual effects team did on the Scourge creepy-crawlers. Over on the Atlantis side - "colorful" doesn't begin to describe the characters in The Tower (and I mean that both literally and figuratively). Connor Trinneer is damn good as Michael in the episode of that name. Just a solid, solid actor. And speaking of performances, check out the tireless David Hewlitt in Grace Under Pressure. Great.
Have hit a dry spell on the anime front. Am sloughing my way through Android Kikaider, Gravitation, and Midori Days that, so far, rate a solid "meh" (although Midori Days does get extra points for a pretty wild premise). I'm also watching Dual, the best of the lot. On the movie front, I watched "H", a Korean movie described as Seven meets Silence of the Lambs. Its was alright. Also caught 3-Iron which I liked a lot until the movie's last half hour where it progressed into the world of the surreal. On the t.v. front, I'm still working my way through Futurama (I'm not sure which season). Every episode has at least 2-3 gags that have me laughing out loud. Fave all-time episode so far: Bending in the Wind. I'm also watching the first two seasons of Outer Limits (a crappy, edited release comprised of what I can only assume are randomly selected episodes from each of the show's first two seasons). As you'd expect from an anthology show, the quality of the individual episodes ranges wildly, from the brilliant (Trial by Fire) to the hilariously crappy (From Within).
I've always been better pitching on paper than delivering verbal pitches, so I wrote up a bunch of story ideas for both shows: Extreme Measures, In the Darkest Recesses, The Kindred, Suffer the Children, Yesterday Today and Tomorrow, The Tainted, and Morpheus. I do know that Brad liked Morpheus. Yesterday Today and Tomorrow is a time travel story (x2) that I've wanted to do since last year. Extreme Measures would be fun to do, especially for its "Holy &^%@!" tease. In the Darkest Recesses would give me the opportunity to put Michael, I mean Daniel, through the ringer. The Kindred would be a fun Atlantis episode that would allow our characters to play their darker sides, and The Tainted is just a cool, old-school scifi story. Well, guess I'll find out what makes the cut on Tuesday.
Thinking of heading down to San Francisco for a couple of days. Can anyone recommend some great restaurants. So far, I've heard Gary Danko, Masa's, and La Folie are the places to to.
Well, I live in Cheshire in the UK but I reccomend
Cafe Riace
Address: 206 Sheridan Ave., Palo Alto
Phone: 650/328-0407
Hours: Dinner nightly 5-10pm; lunch Mon.-Sat. 11:30am-2pm
I know Palo Alto isn't exactly in SF but it's food is fab.
And it has the floozy in the fountain -

Which is worth going to see all by itself.
Frostfox, who is worried that her favourite restaurant is on the other side of the blinking world.
Teal'c for President!!!
Last time I was in San Francisco we went to Michael Mina's Union Square Restaurant it's a seafood-centric restaurant in the Westin St. Francis Hotel. Fabulous Wine list, pricey but I found it worth the price for a great meal before going to the theatre.
Hey Joe,
What is up with Teal'c? His character regression has almost been worse than Carter's this season. He says absolutely nothing, his "big Jaffa arc" is really playing like a poorly written "C" storyline, and he's hardly to be seen in the episodes. I guess if he had huge knockers or used to play a character on Farscape he'd have a better chance of doing something this season. As is, he's only been slightly more involved than Mitchell, who hasn't been involved at all. Leader of SG-1? Indeed. And, while on the subject of Teal'c, why exactly did he return to SG-1? Hell, why did any of them return to SG-1? Can you guys please try and explain something this year? You know, maybe give at least a crappy excuse as to why things are operating so illogically and why the characters are acting so out of character?
Hey, you asked for some Teal'c anger. I just don't want you to delude yourself into thinking, "Whew! At least we haven't compelely ruined Teal'c". You have. Face it, you've totally screwed up on everything this year. Everything. Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel deserve better than the crap you've been churning out.
PS
Hey, any new writers coming aboard for season 10? You guys really need them.

Well, I do have to say that I miss Teal'c I mean, how many times has he said "Indeed" in S9!!!! Who is he? I don't know him anymore!!!!
Psst: Good enough for you :p
So I take it you're on board for next year if you're coming up with pitches. ;)
Lost's pace this season didn't annoy me until the latest ep where the big "shocker" moment wasn't remotely surprising and it was the least challenging move they could have made. Nothing of any importance happened in the entire ep and that combined with the fact that the first two eps basically took place in the same timeframe and, yeah, it's too slow. Not enough to make me bail, yet, but maybe enough for me to decide to catch Veronica Mars or Criminal Minds instead and catch up on Lost later. Maybe I could try downloading it on itunes. LOL! Although something tells me it isn't worth $2/ep.
If you're looking for good anime, you should try asking Kirby Morrow (Capt. Kleinman of the Daedalus) next time you see him. He does a lot of voicework for the genre, so he may know of a few things. And pester Rainbow, too, of course. :)
I'm interested in seeing Miyazaki's version of Howl's Moving Castle. I wonder whatever happened to that...
Omugod! Is it December already? When I got up this morning it was November 13
Seriusly though, just watched 'The Powers that Be' Great show! I particularly like tha there was no last minute technobabble solution to the dilemma. You've got a great thing going with the Ori threat - don't mess it up by letting the characters take the easy way out with some deus ex machina tech solution! Let's see a real way to beat the Ori...
Start by having Daniel brush up on his speech skills. I hate the Ori but even I wasn't convinced by what he had to say int his ep. It's not for him or anyone else to say that the Ori are 'false' gods. What is a true god? Each of us must decide for himself whether to view the Ori as gods. A better argument would tackle whether or not it is in our interests to worship the Ori, whether we see them as gods or not. After seeing the last ever episode of Six Feet Under I'm glad that the sense of loss I'm feeling won't be repeated with SG1 anytime soon!
As for Atlantis... Afetr the first half a dozen or so episodes I've developed strong feelings about where this show is headed. So strong in fact that I really need to take time before posting publicly about them. Also I feel I should see a few more episodes before judging further. Since you're coming up with ideas for next year right now I would humbly suggest however that you would do well to think about whether or not telling stories that could be so easily done on SG1 is really the way to go...
Until next time, take care of yourselves!

Was dating your blog December 13 on purpose?
I do feel Teal'c was under untilized this season, but I look forward to seeing him become a grandpa.

Well, i'm angry, and i'm a teal'c fan...
seriously though, please tell me that both teal'c and carter's characters will have important and GOOD roles in season 10.
please tell me that amanda is not going to be relegated to a recurring guest role and that she will maintain her place on the opening credits.
please tell me that teal'c will a) say something and b) do something in the next season.
and please tell me i can have a pony and a pet monkey for christmas. my family say no way, but i don't think they really mean it.
Teal'c is underutilized. He has reverted to season 1 teal'c with hair and a p90. Too bad the rest of the show didnt revert to season 1 form too.
Well, I'm a Teal'c fan, but I'm not angry. Just hugely disappointed and frustrated with how little the very talented CJ is utilized. But I love Teal'c, and the dynamic he has with Daniel and Mitchell, and I'd love to hear him verbally sparring with Vala.
I suppose it's too early for you to give us specifics on any of the ideas you've pitched for next season (and I assume this means you'll be back - if so, congratulations), but In the Darkest Recesses is a very intriguing title, and the idea of anything that puts Daniel thru the ringer has definitely got my attention. Any way you can work Teal'c into that story?
Joe,
Thanks for keeping us updated. I am looking forward to the back half of the seasons coming up in January.
People are definately passionate about their favorite characters. Teal'c fans are passionate on the inside. ;)
Beth
I'm pretty sure the dating of the blog as december was a mild joke, people have probably been wondering where the new blog entry was (they're usually weekly) and thus they fret as if its been weeks since the last entry. Or of course Joe has been run off his feet so he forgot what month it was.
Good to hear that the seasons 10 and 3 spinning has began, I hope you guys have something special cooked up for the sg1 200th ep.
Regarding your Futurama favorite episode, I recommend watching the episode Roswell that ends well... you shall then have a new favorite :)
Well, that's made my day. Here's to another 20 or 30 seasons each!
Really excellent way to kick off Season 9. No rest for the weary in that three-parter. The burning really yanked the rug out from under my feet, and I loved it. I hope we'll be seeing Vala again soon. I know there are those who would smack me upside my head for saying that, but she's really helped to maintain the Stargate spirit of irreverence.
If you were taking requests, I'd ask for more bodily possessions. It's always fun to watch one of the lead characters taken over by a disease or inhabited by a bad guy. I'm sure you've already got some of that cooked up, seeing as how it's a long-standing theme in the world of Stargate.
Sounds like season 3 of Futurama. You catch "Roswell that Ends Well" yet? That's my favorite.
Joe- you said:
"I've noticed more and more friends getting off the Lost bandwagon. And I guess I can empathize. As much as I enjoyed the first season, the second season has progressed at a snail's pace."
Well, I can say the same about Stargate SG1 just replace "at a snail's pace" with cheap, sexual innuendo, sci-fi caricatures, lame excuses for why a new, inexperienced guy is co-leader, poor writing for said co-leader, etc., and you have got the exact same reaction for why a lot of Stargate fans are "getting off the [Stargate] bandwagon" - maybe this will emphasize for you how many of the real fans of Stargate feel (those fans that have watched for 6-8 years and helped to keep this show on the air and you and your PTB friends employed this long) by putting it in context of how you feel about a show you
enjoyed . . . .
When I say getting off the bandwagon it has several categories - first there are those that do not watch anymore, there are those, like myself, who once watched every ep, every Friday but who now only watch once in awhile and really do not care if they miss the show, and those that are still watching but are making critical and negative comments about the direction of the show and how it is being written (the majority of the fans right now seem to be in categories 2 and 3 - how long before they start to jump into category 1 . . . ?)
Binkpmmc
Joe - Has anyone figured out what to do with Carter in S10 yet without diminishing this once strong, intelligent, competent, female lead? How to use the character to her "full potential" without pushing her off SG1,and diminishing her role, in order to make the new guy look more competent so the fans will buy him as leader (the fans who won't buy him as co-leader or leader as long as Carter is around since it is illogical and makes no sense that a guy like Mitchell could come in and take the position that rightly belongs to a leader of Carter's caliber)? If not there are plenty of fans out here who can, and are ready and willing, to help, even though TPTB have professed many times that there are plenty of stories to tell, so many that TPTB feel they could go on for years.
I find it rather funny that for a group of PTB who make this claim some also say they don't know what to do with one of their lead characters, one of their most integral stars, one who is described by Damien Kindler as the "bedrock" of SG1, the "Obi-Wan-Kenobi" of the team without perhaps having to shuttle her between two shows "to make full use of the character's potential."
You also say: "Lots of angry Carter fans. Lots of angry Daniel fans. Lots of angry Jack fans."
Notice it is fans of the core, integral lead characters who are "angry" or more like disappointed and fed-up, the very fans some of who have jumped, or may be jumping, off the proverbial bandwagon if things continue to go down the path suspected from comments thus far. The very fans who have kept this show on the air this long.

Hey Joe,
First - kudos for reading even a third of the blog responses. I'm sure it made for some great, late-night reading. Just wanted to let you know that I'm going to stop insulting your intelligence by assuming that you're NOT aware of what to believe and what not to believe when it comes to this fandom. I'm sure you're well aware of our political shenanigans.
Second - Good to know you're on board for Season 10. Thanks for telling us about your pitches! Very cool. I guess that means things are progressing...
At the risk of opening a can of worms here, I'm hoping that means that any "brilliant plans" to make one of the long-time main characters into a "cross-over character" has since been axed. If not, well... You warned them, right? It's still a bad idea.
I still love SG-1. Still think the fandom is hilarious. Still have faith in your creativity. Still worried about S-10, though.
But I'm still very glad to see you've taken the plunge for season ten.

first off, it seems you're going to be a part of season 10. congratz, joe!! ;)
second, why didn't you make controversial statements so we could complain and tear each other's guts apart?
third, i want to whine and complain (no gut tearing). :p
sooo... *rubs hands together*
season 10 wish list:
*sam is important to sg1. like, maybe, COMMANDING the team she once had. (you know, the way it was before NewGuy and NewGirl pushed her aside)
*IF sam is used on atlantis, please don't make the fans hate and/or resent her there.
*bring jack/rda back for shippy sam/jack scenes!! :D
*team scenes.
*toned down vala. (so toned down she's gagged, tied up, and propped in a corner :p)
*NO one of the original cast is pushed aside, ignored, forgotten, or changed so that the NewPeople come off more important and useful.
*make season 10 the last. (then make movies with rda/jack included)
well, i can't think of anything else to complain about, but if i do, i'll post it here. ;)
sally :)
ps - if you can't think of ideas for the sam carter character, *i'll* give you some (as will a LOT of other sam fans).

Don't forget about us Atlantis fans, Joe. We're just as pissed off as the the SG-1 fans when it comes to Carter crossing over to Atlantis. As has been stated often, Carter is a collossus of a character. All of the original SG-1 team characters are. To shove her on Atlantis just to make room for Cameron Mitchell and Vala is unfair to Sam Carter/Amanda Tapping, and it is also unfair to the cast of Atlantis. They are doing a great job building their own chemistry and their own show. Don't screw it all up just because you guys think that having Carter gone from SG-1 will make Mitchell and Vala more accepted.
No matter how good your intentions are, some character on Atlatis will have to sacrifice development and screen time in order to accomodate Carter. That's going to make alot of us Atlantis fans resent Carter's presence (see the Mitchell situation on SG-1 for an example of this) and it's not fair to put the character and actress in that position.
We were told when Atlantis started that there would be very little crossover with SG-1. Instead, there are a number of episodes in S2 that do in fact have MAJOR crossover elements. And if these rumors for S3 are true, then it's only going to get worse. Atlantis has to stand on its own if it's going to stick around after SG-1 goes off the air. Right now, with the way that stories are being written, I'm not sure that it will survive without SG-1 leading into it and lending it story support.
Please Joe, can you and the other writers try to settle things down next year? There are way too many major problems with SG-1 and Atlantis right now. Stick to making two seperate shows, hopefully without shafting any of the main characters. I know that new and shiny characters are, well, new and shiny. The luster wears off really fast.
Hi Joe,
You mentioned a Daniel episode you are pitching for next season---what Carter story(ies) are you pitching for next season, Joe?
Cathy
"You mentioned a Daniel episode you are pitching for next season---what Carter story(ies) are you pitching for next season, Joe?"
As pitched, both Suffer the Children and Orpheus are Carter stories. Extreme Measures is an sG-1 team episode. The Darkest Recesses a "Daniel in peril" episode.
Hi Joe,
As another Atlantis fan said don't forget us too. I'd just like to add to that sentiment. We love Atlantis and the wonderful cast over on that show. It's great and if you bring Sam over then some of our characters are going to have to make way for her and it's going to upset a lot of us fans. The cast have a great chemistry so please don't do this to us. Just because you are having trouble finding a place for her on SG1 she's just too big a character to come over to Atlantis and she will be resented just like Cameron/Vala and Sam/Amanda deserves better than that. Please keep her on SG1 and leave Atlantis alone, it's a great show and is more than capable of standing on it's own two feet. The cast are the best, they rock so please let them develop.
Thank so much for the info Joe, i really appreciate it and your ideas for Atlantis and SG-1 next yr sounds exciting:)
Thanks for answering, Joe.
Cathy
GWWRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!!!!
change bad. keep things same. ooga-ug!
So Joe:
If 2 of the stories pitched already are "Carter stories" is that because Carter will continue to play a lead, core and integral character on SG1 or is it because early on in S10 you have to write in why Carter's role is diminishing on SG1 so by default the early stories have to be "Carter stories" to explain it?

Re: new story ideas
[Cam]Now THAT'S what I'm talking about![/Cam]

Joe, I've gotta ask -- are there any Mitchell stories in that big black bag of yours for Season 10?
For San Francisco restaurants, I highly recommend The Slanted Door, an upscale Vietnamese restaurant using local ingredients and influences.
http://www.slanteddoor.com/
It's in the refurbished Ferry Building, which is a treat to visit in itself, with its very upscale food marketplace. Slanted Door is very hot right now.
For lovely but not as 'newly trendy' restaurants, I recommend Aqua on California and Farallon on Post, both offering modern sea food that's very interesting.
Enjoy SF! There's no shortage of good eats down here.
teal'c talks weird now.. too different.. im not seeing chemistry between teal'c and mitchell.. Jaffa political stuff is too boring.. we want Jaffa who fight.
Ok, so did you even bother to pitch any Teal'c eps? Hum? No, well now I am outraged!!!!
Viva la Teal'c
What about Maybourne eps? Now that is a great character...get him off that hick planet. And I still think Jack's clone should show up...if Vala can join, let JackII show up.
I ate at one of the little stands off Fisherman's wharf--enjoying the infamous sourdough breadbowl of a lovely seafood bisque (though you're probably used to Pacific seafood cuisine in Vancouver, LOL).
Okay, it's a touristy thing to do, but I WAS a tourist! Heh. I even drove Lombard street twice!
Good luck on the editing/mixing for the back half of the seasons.
This week's Lost was good. Next week's...not so much. Though I love the actor playing Bernard.
Not an angry Teal'c fan, but hoping Bra'tac does more in the second half of the season. Jaffa are much better at action than talking. ;-)
And stop making me panic about not Christmas shopping yet! December 13, geez. It's not even Thanksgiving in MY country yet. Yeah, yeah, yours was last month.
Joe, cynic that I am, I'm suspecting that one of those Carter stories takes place on Atlantis. Am I right? I'd give anything to be wrong.

Niiiice. These eps sound very cool! :D And the titles - in my inexperienced opinion - sound pretty solid, too (Delicious Fat Guy, included ;) ). Orpheus has been used already though, right?
Any Cam, Vala or Team episodes in the works, too?
Do you guys always start pitching ideas this early, or is this another minute (read: obnoxious) example of network suggestions?
And lay on the Teal'c-sans-Jaffa-Nation eps, Joe! You know you want to! :D
~ Cassandra (DoS)
And I hope, Joe, you remember that Sam has done nothing to show she's a good leader in any episode, except for the fact that you guys have labeled her as such.
I don't particularly want to see her on Atlantis because I find all the relationships and interactions there good, but I don't see that Sam is such a collossal character that she'll outshine any of them. Far from it, I think everyone of them has so much personality that they'll outshine her, even the second string characters.
ahh the sweet suffering of Sg1 fans.
Teal'c has become a non character,
Carter is neither here nor there.
Time has to now put back the peices.
The Jaffa need to refind their strenght
of purpose when this is done, Teal'c will
be stronger too.
swapping Carter between atlantis and Sg1
Could actually work to help the new team
appreaciate her skills.
Therefor strengthen the whole new team overall.
Just enough so they miss her at Stargate command, not too much that she starts to look like an Atlantis Regular.
as for Daniel, Kill him, bring him back to life, kill him again, bring him back to life again.
he seems happy with that.
how ever in saying that, they are all important, the first team with oneill
took a while to find itself.
The fans should give it that little bit of time.
Rome wasn't built in a day.
Just remember if Sam has done nothing to show shes a leader (which i disagree with btw) then that would be the writers fault.
Atlantis is a great show. A great little brother to SG-1 which has been the best sci fi show going for 8 years thanks to the great team of Jack O'Niell, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and especially Teal'c from Chulak!!!!!!
Oh yeah, I knew "Orpheus" sounded familiar. Season 7--Bra'tac and Rya'c stuck in a mine, Teal'c loses his mojo, and recently descended Daniel has visions from his time being the glowy jellyfish.--yes, I looked it up, I mostly know eps by "the one where..."
Thanks for sharing some of the pitching ideas. Hey, are you ever going to do more with your production diary published here at GW and at Solutions? I found those fascinating.
I'm a SG-1 fan from S2, and I'm optimistic about the back half of season 9--except for that spoiler involving an aspect of Vala's return...I'm grudgingly accepting Vala will be on S10, but I don't want to lose Sam, or Daniel, or Teal'c, and "New Guy" Mitchell is growing on me...in a good way.
Here's hoping the next half aired have all four doing scenes together (it helps with the team bonding). Ties that Bind held up better than I thought on multiple viewing, but Teal'c wasn't there much, and Vala was just a stand-in until the band really got back together. :-)
Just had a secondary thought, McKay should be made a futurama fan... when you see where no fan has gone before, you'll know why :p
Oooh, that's clever--Rome wasn't built in a day, eh?
Well, guess how long it took for Rome to burn. You got it. And for some reason I can see Joe on a hill watching it happen, playing his fiddle.
Whoa! Talk about analytical... Carter episodes, Teal'c Episodes... new guy, new girl.
Gosh, what happened to sitting back and enjoying the show for what it is rather than tryint to control it?
Oh, and love you blog Joe. A ripping read every time!:)

Australia
Arrested Development no longer *Cries* Fools. That was the funniest show on TV
"Delicious Fat Guy" and "Wraith Fight Club" HAHAH!! I hope you kept those names! Is the fat guy made out of Doughnuts? :P hehehe
Ahhhh have to baby sit not.
Thanks for blogging!
"Wraith Fight Club" sounds good I've been wanting to see a type of wraith meets gladiator fight to the death episode for sometime and the title sounds close enough so I hope it makes the cut.
It would be cool if atlantis could find one of those quantium mirrors like SG-1 found Season 2 or 3. maybe they a mirror on a hive ship and find out that some wraith have been using it to feed on people in alternate realities.
I know this is alittle off topic...but what ever happened to Daniels Grandpa...hes with some aliens...did the SGC just forget about him?
Ben
OK, I've got two here. First, Joe, if you ever do a gladiator episode with John Sheppard and a wraith in an arena, I'm done with it. I put up with Defiant One. I won't put up with that too.
Second, never ever use a quantum mirror on Atlantis. There is already far to familiar a feeling with most Atlantis stories and far to much "borrowing", "recycling", and "refitting" of SG1 stories already. Carter is coming to town already this year and possibly staying for a while next (God help us). I'm sick of feeling like I'm watching SG1's little brother. Atlantis should be more than just the spinoff in people's minds, but now I'm worried it never will be. Even in your own.
Marissa Wren
Just wondering if you have checked out 'Noir' - it's one of the best anime series I've ever seen.
Mythic and twisted. Not quite like anything I've ever seen. The entire series is available as a boxed set. It's definitely worth your time.
I think I can get on board for Kindred and The Wraith Fight Club from just the titles alone.
But c'mon now, what about Teal'c?
I'm not an angry fan, but he could really use some attention from the SGC cafeteria lady, as played by Niecy Nash from Reno 911. :) She could give him extra whip cream on his pie, and save the last cup of jello for him. The man needs to eat before he attends those long-winded Jaffa Council sessions.
A big YAY for the return of Maury Chaykin.
Oi, Joe. You really know how to stir up controversy! Kudos on getting through I assume at least a third of those posts on the previous blog!
Glad you're pitching new stories for Season 10! Dark side is good! Means more character development and growth-which is essential for a show like SG1.
Angry Teal'c fans? Well, I'm a Teal'c fan and yea, I feel he's underutilized and all he says is INDEED, but I know you've got a great episode for him in the back half of the season right? Right? haha
Also, I'm glad SOMEONE agrees that all the good, well written shows are always the ones getting cancelled. Arrested Development and Futurama are two of my fave shows- and poor networking/scheduling ruined them. Bleh on networks.
I'm also one that is jumping off the Lost and Alias bandwagon...like you, I believe Lost is going nowhere, and Alias is getting to..fantasy like. ugh. What happened to the really good spy show?
If you want to check out another well-written show, I recommend Grey's Anatomy. Quirky characters with great dialogue. Love it.
Hiya Joe,
How are you?
Wanted to say something in last blog but I figured, after 500+ comments, you'd never get to mine!
Sorry no angry comments.
I just wanted to say, I like your blogs and I have nothing to complain about.
Just say thanks to the rest of the crew for giving us these wonderful shows and I'm happy there is an S3 for SGA and S10 for SG1.
Take care and have a nice Xmas break!
Alex
PS I can't believe they cancelled Arrested Development either!
About spinning stories for Season 10,has anyone have thought of writng an episode where the Tok'ra's queen get revive by a sarcophagus and that can lead to some unpleasant consequences?
That will be a cool episode to
watch!
About spinning stories for season 10, has anyone thought of writing a season where CB doesn't join the cast as Vala? That would be a cool season to watch!
"Speaking of which - over 550+ comments on my last blog entry. Lots of angry Carter fans. Lots of angry Daniel fans. Lots of angry Jack fans. Not so many angry Teal'c fans. Come on, angry Teal'c fans! Let's hear from you"
LOL!! Joe u amuse me :P!! *pretends to be angry Teal'c fan* Uh...Teal'c needs more lines...yes...but then again he was never spose to talk much ;)
And can't wait for season 10 & 3...and the second half of the current seasons :)! Just letting u know some fans out there still like SG-1 the way it is - even better when Vala's around :)
And Alias really is a sci fi show - I accepted that ages ago ;) The season 4 finale really beat it home though
About spinning stories for season 10... Teal'c should tell Vala about Sha're.
And being in the opposition to the anonymous poster above, I think that a season without CB would be booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. She's the best thing happening to SG-1, you know it, Joe.
Kia ora!
Thanks for the tantalising blog about possible episodes - good luck with the pitches.
I promise that I was building up to being really really angry - furious in fact - on behalf of Walter - with a basketful full of hurtful comments and barbs ... but after a cup of tea and a ginger biscuit the world just took on a whole new hue.
Keep blogging - and my recommended viewing is the Kiwi/UK film "In My Father's Den"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385017/
for a film that sneaks up on your feelings.
Hey Joe--
Wonder how many comments you'll get this time!

This place is to die for. We ate at the one in San Jose tonight after Michael's appearance at the Creation con (Daniel definitely needs blonde highlights in his hair---WHOO BABY!). The Shrimp Scampi is the best I've had and the chocolate cake is better than Sex. ::grin::

hi Joe... i have to say that i am not an angry Teal'c fan... sorry to disappoint, but i am a crazy shep/weir atlantis girl... pls tell the other writes that i think that they are doing a great job of John/Liz ship than what happened to Sam and Jack, i am really enjoting this season, and from what Torri tells us at Syd con, i cant wait for The Long Goodbye... she kicks ass... GO THE WRITERS!!!!!!
OOOh S10 without even the thought of Vala - now there's a novel idea - no cheapening of SG1, no OTT immature nightmare cartoon characters - that would make SG1 worth watching again! Please Joe - I want to watch this show - get rid of vala, please.
Carole
Well, i could be upset about teal'c...but he really hasn't done anything since s8. Kinda hard to be upset about a character who's biggest character developments were to turn all whuny when he realized he lost his mojo, then to get whiny again when his son grew up without him.
I would love to see teal'c in something really challenging, like a retread of Lifeboat but let CJ do some acting (oh, and i take it back, he did get avatar, so he's on par with his one teal'c eps per season)
angry enough???? :)
as to carter episodes, boy do i hope there are some. as a Sam fan, Sam eps are the only really intriguing thing going on right now. I just hope she's not shunted to the side for Vala's sake.
to quote Sam, 'who says an sg team needs four members'.....why can't we have five? If we're to be subjected to Vala and her silly space baby, can we at least have a decent female character left on the show -as a full time member, not relegated to recurring?
greedy i know, but now that RDA is gone and Teal'c is his normal wall paper self and cam has yet to really do anything, Sam's the only intriguing thing for me at the moment
oh, it's not Anime, but check out HBO's Rome.
it does start slow, and definitely is on cable. enough violence and nudity to keep any network exec happy, but it also has a very engaging plot and they're not afraid to screw with their characters. shocking things happen and you never feel like anyone is immune
I watched for a few weeks, got behind, then got caught up and am just as hooked as i was.
I want to watch this show, too. So, keep Vala.
Hey Joe!
I don't know why everyone is so angry, I think Season 9 is great so far (living in the UK we have only had the first couple of eps. but we do have the amazing new opening credits...so very cool!)
Keep up the good work mate x
I love Vala; I hope she is back. CB is a brilliant actress.
I love the other characters also and hope that all of them will have their share of storylines.
Lots of shows have much bigger casts and still keep everyone involved. :)
I don't understand the entitlement issues that some fans seem to have in demanding things be the exact way they want. If a show becomes unwatchable to me, I stop watching. (shrug)
"I don't understand the entitlement issues that some fans seem to have in demanding things be the exact way they want. If a show becomes unwatchable to me, I stop watching. (shrug) "
Kind of goes in cycles as Joe is finding out.It just happens that right now, the Demandas and the shippers are the loudest.
>>I don't understand the entitlement issues that some fans seem to have in demanding things be the exact way they want. If a show becomes unwatchable to me, I stop watching. (shrug) <<
It's because Stargate fans sometimes become heavily invested in the show and/or the fact that Joe makes himself available to us in his comments. People know that their critiques are acknowledged if not necessarily followed.
Therefore, posters request/order/demand:
more/less Sam
more/less Daniel
more/less Cameron
more/less Teal'c
more/less Vala
more/less SGA development.
Oh yeah, and dressing on the side.
I second the Grey's Anatomy recommendation. As well as NCIS and Numb3rs (though the second season isn't grabbing me as much).
Have fun in SF Joe, it's beautiful there.

TWO Carter's episodes and only ONE Daniel's episode???!!! Are you going to bore me to death with Carter stories?
What Vala, Vala/Daniel and Teal'c stories are you pitching for next season?
Okay... angry Teal'c fan! LOL
Well you know... when is Mr. "Indeed" Man going to get a new word.
All kidding aside... hope you guys have a great next season. Disappointed about Carter but eh... that's life right!
Vala is a guest character. No more should a story be pitched for her then one pitched for Bratec or Jacob.
What are the good TEAM (Mitchell, Carter, Daniel, Teal'c) eps you have pitched.
You *have* to grab lunch at David's on Geary just off Union Square -- it's some of the best food this side of the Rockies. Then take a stroll around Union Square itself -- it's just beautiful :>.
Joe, what are the chances, that Claudia Black will be more than a Special Guest next season? I hope she's gonna be at least semi-regular with really great stories written just for her!
Why do you need angry Teal'c fans? We are little peaceful bunch! Unless you're planning on giving Teal'c less screantime or God forbid, killing him. Than you will learn what means to fuck with us *firm nod*
But seriously I can't wait for the second half of the seasons. Is it January yet????
Speaking of Futurama, you MUST watch the episodes with commentary - *hilarious* I tell you, just hilarious! I believe the commentaries are listed under the language/audio for each episode.
As for Lost - they've just about lost me. And after being such an adamant fan last year, I can't deny I'm disappointed. I'm trying to stick it out, if only for Naveen Andrews and Josh Holloway, amazing actors both!
And thanks for the tease of possible episodes - you realize you'll have to give us more on the ideas that don't make it (well, and the ones that make it).
If you crave truly amazing food - Michael Minna's is not to be missed.
And the Ferry Building - the best example of what's to love about San Fran, especially the Sat. Farmers Market (check out the pulled-steak sandwich tent) - and if you can get in to Slanted Door - OUTSTANDING!
Hee, nothing like a couple of cranky fans in the morning before that cup of coffee. Gets the heart going!
Lost is completely surreal. I watch the show religiously, and even then I can never fully get into it because, well... they've been on an island for a year! They couldn't have built a few shacks? I can't wrap my brain around how completely without common sense they are. And how on God's green earth do they always looked so COIFED? If it were me on a deserted island, I'd have gone native two months in, and that isn't necessarily a good thing.
Futurama, hee!
Fry: I'm getting something. A headache with pictures?
Leela: An idea?
Fry: Yes!
Can't wait for Grace Under Pressure, being a huge McKay fan. And Carter is going to be in it! Sweeeeet. I like her a lot, and I think bringing her to the Pegasus Galaxy would be awesome, so long as... well, McKay doesn't become her bumbling sidekick. He doesn't deserve that, even if he blew up half (or was it three fifths?) of a solar system. A lil romance, maybe, possibly even bonding over mutual planet destructions. That I can deal with ;)
Have a great time in San Francisco!

Nobody crying for your blood yet? Not even the Teal'c fans? Back to the drawing board Joe...or maybe not. It's a refreshing change to hear comments about the Stargate and Atlantis stories and characters rather than the totally unacceptable actor bashing I saw in the last comments. Some of the pitches for S10 sound great, hope they pan out the way you envisage them. Any of the actors close to signing up for S10 or is it too early to say?
Film reccommendation: Zatoichi..bloody brilliant! Hope you've seen it. And yes, Futurama rocks! still love 'The Sting' and 'where no fan...'
Hi, here are two more restaurants in San Fran if you are still interested. Zuni's and Parma. Parma is a very small Italian restaurant and really quite excellent. Zuni's is more nouvell cuisine, but the chef was very creative and demonstrated good instincts when putting flavors together, and I don't mean putting blueberry sauce on buffalo burgers.
enjoy
LOSt has lost me. Watched this season and when you can guess how the episode is gonna end, it's lost its mystery, plus, don't need another show that delights in bumping off folk.
As for ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, alas, never found its footing. Try MY NAME IS EARL. It's a hoot!
Suspect Teal'c fans just don't get angry ...they get even ;)
Cheesecake Factory has great rep. Just google it.
LOST is scary...lol...i blame my imagination and paranoia...anyways, Midori days wasn't bad. Gravi...not my kind of anime...
Actually, Joe, you could do the majority of us a favor and not bring Vala in as a regular. The crazy space baby storyline is a train wreck waiting to happen, and you do know that. Vala does nothing but dumb down the show and the characters. Everyone has to act out of character around her, Daniel most of all. He is NOT Vala's sidekick, though that seems to be the only way you guys know how to write him. Dump the slut. We'll all thank you for it.
The best meal I have ever had was at Jardiniere, 300 Grove St. Get the chef's Six Course Tasting Menu. You won't be sorry!

Well, it sounds like you have no shortage of ideas. I hope when you say certain episodes are Sam episodes or Daniel episodes, etc. that you keep in mind that as much as we have our favorite characters, it's the *team* that makes Stargate SG1 special. In the old days, even in episodes that featured a storyline more geared toward one character or the other, the team was essential. The relationship between the characters, while having their adventures, is what makes us care. It's easy to blame RDA's schedule for some of the getting off the team track, but that certainly can't be blamed in S9.
I agree with Anonymous.... the one that said the *team* thing.
Even in an ep like "the first ones" which one can term as a Daniel ep. There was still the rest of the team, doing some stuff, having good lines, caring about what happened to Daniel.
Compare that to Babylon. You had Mitchell and I guess the SGC was searching for him, but you never really got the sense they cared. And if they don't care, why should I care.
We need to have the team, like they were, actually working as a team and caring for one another. Mitchell has so much potential but it has not been used. Teal'c has not been used. Sam has not been used. Daniel has been "used" but its been in a lets just "use this guy for thie plot device" kinda way. Not in the "Daniel is a great member of SG-1 who I love" kinda way.
Lets do what you all promised at the start of the year and get back to basics. Lets rebuild this TEAM and have some good eps that show why they are a TEAM.
And if the TEAM absolutely has to consist of Chris Judge/Teal'c, Michael Shanks/Daniel, Amanda Tapping/Sam, Ben Browder/Cam AND Claudia Black/Vala, then let it be so.
Let each of these characters shine as a member of a unit, a part of a whole.
Don't let Season Ten open as a continuation of the Daniel/Vala Series. That was just wrong on so many levels.
~ DoS
I am amazed! Has hell frozen over? Two well thought out, rational anonymous posts in a row (with no character or actor bashing). And I couldn't agree more - the team and their interactions is what make this show great. I just hope that you and the other PTB agree too, Joe.
The problem right now is the Team. The structure of SG-1 is totally illogical and undefined. Mitchell is leader, why? Carter rejoined SG-1, why? Because she was ordered to? Teal'c is back at the SGC because? Ok, Daniel missed his ride to Atlantis, but I'm sure Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel all talked about reforming as a team, right? None of this makes any sense and none of it has been explained in even the slightest way. Even when the Team is out together, it seems that they're all doing their own things anyway. Mitchell does not lead. Carter, Teal'c, adn Daniel seem to run any given operation by just doing what they know needs to be done. This makes Mitchell virtually useless. For me, the best scene all season was in Prototype when CArter, Daniel, and Teal'c were in Anubis' lab, figuring out how to solve the problem, how to save the day. That is what SG-1 should be. All this talk of adding Vala to the team next year means even more nonsensical behavior and probably more non-explanation of character motivations. This once well structured military unit now looks like a hodgepodge of people who serve no purpose, work almost entirely seperately, and don't have even the slightest logical reason for being on the team or doing what they're doing.
Joe, you guys need to explain things. The team needs to make sense. Right now, it doesn't, and adding Vala will only make it crazier. Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel are the biggest characters in the Stargate universe right now. Mitchell should be learning from them. It doesn't matter what any fan groups think, it doesn't matter what those wizened studio executives think. This is about what makes sense for the story. With the way that things are written now, that's nothing at all.
Mr. Mallozzi..
First of all congratulations on a season 10 and especially a seaon 3 on Atlantis..I have to share with you that I met Rachel Luttrell this past Sunday, Nov. 13 in Springfield, MA at a convention...Never in my life have I ever attended anything like this and although I was not interested in anything else there, I went to see Rachel..I have to say she is wonderful...Bubbly and such a terrific person...You must love her at the set...She is very personable and very compassionate soul....She spoke very highly of the show, the actors and everyone involved in the series..Many fans there were concern of her lack of screentime and mentioned so to her. I have to just add that I love the direction in which you are taking her character, but I hope that you have more Teyla-centered episodes in this coming season...and If I may add...we would love to know more about her culture and background and I personally would love to see her develop her relationship with Col. Sheppard...as well as have Teyla more involved with other characters..thanks..
I hope to see Darkest Recesses being done for next year. There hasn't been a good episode of picking on Daniel for far too long (though the beginning of Season 9 was quite a bit of fun in that regard.)
As I've said before, Anime-wise I'd suggest you go some some of the comedy stuff like Cromartie High School, Ah! My Goddess, or perhaps even D.N.Angel.
The Angry Teal'c fans are probably out for a week-long resort, so surely they'll get back to you Joe. ^.^
I like reading your blogs Joe, thanks for doing them.
A comment to all those "speaking for the fans." Have you not looked at the results to the polls that Gateworld runs? The vast majority of respondents like the way the season is going, like Vala, like Mitchell as a character and leader. Please those of you in the minority, do not overstate the importance of your opinions. It appears from the evidence that at least 70% or more of the fans who come to this site A)enjoy the changes to the show; B)Trust the writers to continue to entertain them.
This is a little out of the blue here, but isn't it November?
cmuty on gateworld. wrote: whatever about the GW poll
hahahahahahahhahhahaha
plleeaaassseee... I sat there and watched people spam the poll.
Not exactly scientific if one\two people can sit there and vote as many times as they want.
What? How can you give Gravitation a simple 'meh'? Shame on you. That's possibly the best boy on boy action anime around. (Although some hentai might be better, but I'm SO not going there.) Dual is a rip-off of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Alright. I'm coming off as an anime Nazi, aren't I? Anyway, if you're into subtle political statements, teenaged psychopaths, and blood...check out Battle Royale. Not anime, but it's a classic. XD
P.S - 'Kay. I couldn't resist. Escaflowne is a kickass anime movie. Watch it, por favor.
Sorry to say this, but if the TEAM episodes are supposed to be like "Ex Deux Machina", so NO, thank you. It's the most BORING episode of SG-1, I've ever seen and I really, really don't like this episode, maybe with the exception of the last seconds of it with the multiple Ba'al. Sorry Joe. Character driven stories, like the MINI-SERIES (first 5 and 1/4 episodes of season 9) are this what is glueing me to the screen. And there're more people thinking like this.
cmuty on gateworld said:
Seriously, if you're using the polls on Gateworld as "evidence" then you must be cracked. Or one of the people who constantly vote over and over and over and over and over again. All you need do is refresh the poll a few times in a minute and you'll see that " 70%majority" voting. And I'd ask you not to overstate the importance of these so-called "facts". No one, not you, not anyone else, should come on here and profess to be speaking for the majority of viewers, or say that you have proof that "everybody" likes the new cast, changes, whatever. That's obviously not the case, as there would be way, way, way less bitching going on in every single forum and list.
There has never been and SG-1 miniseries... maybe you are confusing it with that other show, that got cancelled.... farscape.
But I agree Ex Deux Machina is not that good an ep, I am thinking more eps like pre season 7... you know back when the show was in its prime and actually gaining in ratings, not dropping.
MINI-SERIES?
Oh, you mean the Daniel/Vala comedy hour. Right, that's what I want to see. Teal'c muffled and inactive, Daniel Jackson playing two-bit sidekick to a cheap, oversexed charicature, and Mitchell being about as useful as Siler and his big wrench. No wait, strike that. That's an insult to Siler and his wrench.
Joe, if you have any respect for the show please don't ever lose it as badly as you did in that oh so wonderful, terrific, script-elf created, masterpiece MINI-SERIES!
If you like large amounts of Italian food in a restaurant that seems like it should be owned by a mob boss, but silly enough that it has a room devouted to the pope featuring a centerpiece of his head (its great, really!) then Bucca di Beppos is awesome. Amazing food!! Get reservations though, its busy!! Def. worth it!!

SG1 "miniseries"? Is that sort of like the "second original" team?
Too bad about your anime slump, Joe. I couldn't get into Dual myself, it was too much like Tenchi with mecha. Neon Genesis Evangelion did the whole "boy must save the universe from evil in a kewl mecha" theme much better but with tons more angst. Rahxephon did it even better than Eva and it made more sense to boot. Great series.
Finishing up Planetes, which is a fun series about space debris collectors. I'm also slogging through Texhnolyze but man is it slow and odd.
And I'll second the Escaflowne movie recommendation, though the series is much, much better.
I don't have anything angry or critical to say, so I'll keep it short. Gotta save space for the people who want to yell at you.
Anyway, I guess I'm in the minority, but I think a cross-over would be cool. I want to see how Carter reacts to the new and slightly improved McKay. I think the crossovers are a great way to remind people that the Atlantis expedition is still the brainchild of the SGC.
Also, I thought it rocked hardcore when Mitch Pileggi did a guest spot on The West Wing (awesome show) as a Senator investigating the leak regarding a secret military space shuttle. I kept thinking "omg! Caldwell is investigating the White House because Toby leaked stuff about the Daedalus!"
Anyway, it was a geek out moment for me.
GRR!! *Angry Teal'c fan* What am I angry about?
I'm rooting for "Delicious Fat Guy" sounds like a winner to me.
I'm completely disagreeing on the Sawyer liking, and Alias is very Sci Fi, I'm debating whether to comtinue watching (after the second episode debacle). My question though, have you ever tried Buffy and Angel?
I'm eagerly awaiting "Grace Under Pressure" and "Ripple Effect" Whose genious idea is it to have such a long hiatus?!
-Samanta
I'm looking forward to Grace Under Pressure just slightly less than my upcoming root canal. Why anyone would want to see McKay act out his sexual fantasies and why anyone would want to see Carter's character further reduced to a half-wit bimbo is beyond me. She's completely identified by the men who want to shag her, period. Forget the fact that it's the single most unoriginal Atlantis script ever. And that IS saying something. What is with you guys and the ever increasing puerile nature of the two shows? I cringe everytime Shep does his Spiderman thingy in Conversion. Was such a comic book move really necessary? And what's with down-grading Vala's personality from Prometheus Unbound? She was a partially serious character in that one. Now she's just a not so serious caricature. The Ties That Bind was obviously that anime episode you've always wanted to write, but the problem is it looked and sounded just like exactly that--a cartoon. There's a fine line between funny and campy and I'm afraid you've crossed it without any intention of ever going back.
Mini-series? I've never heard that one before. It really is both funny and sad.
I wish is were a damn mini series, because at least then it wouldn't be an actual part of the show.
Joe, if you really think that people are tuning in to see the adventures of Vala and her sidekick, you're terribly mistaken.
I was most sad for Daniel that whole time. Talk about off the mark, that guy deserved a different name.
That is NOT the same guy who freed the Abydonians, who opened the Stargate. That's just some buffoon with stupid facial expressions who blows out his breath in exasperation a lot.
Anyone who considers any gateworld poll as 'accurate' is in dire need of a reality check. It, like any other poll, can be easily rigged by anyone wanting to make a statement and create 'proof'.
Just like letter campaigns can be faked when the writers photocopy letters and forge peoples' names on them to make their group look bigger than it is.
the show will do whatever the network makes it do, plain and simple. I don't even think much of the blame for the turning of events this season can be laid at Bridge Studios' door - other than rob apparantly lacking the ability to tell Sony/MGM/Scif 'no' and his willingness to screw the characters over for a look or an image.
The show is slowly being killed by idjets in corporate offices who believe panel studies and statistics and accounts instead oflistening to the creative folks whose hearts and souls go into the shows.
we had them to thank for Anise, we have them to thank for the co-leader situation (lord FORBID a scifi now not have a leading man!!!!!!!!!!!) and we now have them to thank for the DAniel and Vala National Lampoon hour...no wait, national Lampoon was at least funny. This is more along the line of American Pie.
But, anyway, Joe is just as caught in the middle as we are...the only thing is he's dependant on these mokes for his paycheck while we're not
""In the Darkest Recesses would give me the opportunity to put Michael, I mean Daniel, through the ringer.""
OH I so hope this one get pick. A real nice ANGSTY, DANIEL WHUMPING EP would be just awesome!!!!!! : )
Glad to hear you are going to be around for the next season.
I love Sawyer. He's everything that I shouldn't like (even down to shallow things like I don't really go for blonds or facial hair) and yet he's such an intriguing character, I can't help it.
Also, speaking for myself (what a concept, speaking only for myself, huh?) I think The Dark Recesses sounds intriguing and hope it comes into fruitation
Stuck in a time loop are we? I could've sworn it's not yet December.
I kept defending TPTB up until the start of s9, saying that you guys know what you do, despite a weaker s7 and a slightly better 8, but still a far cry from what the show used to be. Oh not that anyone gets me wrong I know change is invetable and necessary in a show that runs for a decade and it's not so the changes or the new villains I have problems with, it's more the silly stories and the non existant team. You mentioned watching LOST, now *that* is what I call story telling. It's simply brilliant, though I agree so far s1 was better than s2. Nonetheless that's the one show on my Do Not Miss list, unfortunately SG has slipped from that a while ago.
But I finally found an explanation, remember the fish in Jack's lake in Moebius? None of what you're doing is real, it's all and alternate universe that explains the oddity of the Jaffa arc, people in tight, sleeveless clothes to apparently appeal to the young male demographic, the missing explanation of where the lead character went, Daniel's rolling eyes' at everything Vala says, etc, etc. None of it is *our* characters we've grown to love, they all died back in Egypt. Works for me.
Futurama FTW!!
I'm not too sure about this Grace Undr pressure, having reado ther people's posts here but i'm sure it will be better than it sounds. ^_^
~Neko138
Oh yeah, it's bound to be better than it sounds. I mean, just look at how it's been described by the people involved. There's the Carter all wet line, the it's like Grace from SG1 season seven only with McKay line, the sexual tension that's fun to play line, the she's not the Carter everyone expects line, etc. It's like no one can describe it other than to say it'll be funny, sexy, and pure fantasy. Oh, yeah, and it's a complete rip off, er, homage. Christ, they're homaging themselves now.
:shakes head:
I know what you're saying about Lost. Last weeks plot was predictable (Sayid and Shannon look as though they'll get a happily ever after, so of course one of them has to die, leaving the other bitter and vengeful :P) Something big happened, but did it advance the plot at all? No. I am also now mostly tuning in for Sawyer, although, erm, my reasons for tuning in for Sawyer are a little different than your reasons ;) ... Anyway, thanks for the update, and it's good to know that you'll be back next year for Stargate. I can't wait for the second half of seasons 9 and 2 :)
~ Sarah (a not so angry Stargate fan)
p.s any chance of RDA coming back for one episode?
Joe,
Do you guys intentionally write for the newer audience? This isn't necessarily a dig at you, I'm just curious as to how you approached this season. I feel that the show has really, really lost a lot of the depth it had in the past. There's no more character interaction, no more references to previous characters or storylines, no more indications that these people have known each other for eight years. It occurs to me that maybe this is on purpose. Perhaps, in the belief that you'd need an entirely new audience (RDA leaving, BB & CB joining, no AT) to sustain the show, you really wrote it as if nothing had ever taken place at SGC or among the character before. At least, I hope it's something like that, because I'd hate to think that you can't write SG-1 stories anymore.
The Cheesecake Factory is excellent, but it is a national chain (with a couple locations in the Seattle area--just a hop away for you, Joe, relatively speaking.)
Do you really want the Teal'c fans to get all Jaffa on you? They speak softly but carry big staff weapons. ;-)
Ditto to posts above asking for more about the production diary and/or the dead script ideas. The "look behind the curtain" is interesting.
So if you are pitching ideas that include Carter and Daniel, does that mean AT and MS have signed contracts and they are returning for a full season?
I am paraphrasing someone else’s thoughts here with some of my own thrown in. What exactly are the so-called Sam fans (as well as other fans in general) asking for? Screen time for Sam to the exclusion of all others? No. Massive story arcs dedicated to her and only her? No.
What they seem to be asking for is that for whatever TPTB choose to write for Carter and to show onscreen makes sense based on the high standards and established parameters that THEY set up for Carter over the past 8 years. These include leadership of SG1 since she already had attained that position, intelligent and strong character moments and development, the thing coveted by most fans – the TEAM relationships and the friendship between she, Teal’c and Daniel (the one that has existed for 8 years to only disappear into thin air in S9).
All Sam fans have not called for the exclusion of Vala - granted some have but the feelings from all facets of fandom run strong about Vala – some want her toned down, some want her off altogether because of what she represents in their opinion and some only want her in small, recurring doses as she is too over the top to sustain a full-time character, in the opinion of some.
Likewise very few have called for the total exclusion of Mitchell, in fact, many say Mitchell would be ok if he was a part of the team, if his intro made sense and was logical, if he was a major or even still a Lt. Colonel who was fulfilling the role he originally came to play – team member under Carter, a guy who was there, and wanted to be there, to learn from the best and THAT IS Sam, Teal’c and Daniel. They want to see logic and common sense based on what has transpired and been established for the 3 core, lead and original characters and that includes Carter as leader since TPTB set it up that way for 7 years and gave her lead in the 8th year. Right now Mitchell’s set-up does not make sense in that regard but very few have called for Mitchell to be off the show altogether – just make it logical as opposed to some inexperienced guy showing up out of nowhere and contrary to the whole reason he was there in the first place. Make him part of the team, learning from the best and give him a purpose – right now he does not have one.
It is not really a stretch to understand that many, Sam fans as well as others in general, feel the Daniel/Vala comedy hour just doesn’t work for them. It is the desire to see less of the Vala/Daniel hour and more of the team – the team of 4 core characters the way it is supposed to be – the formula that worked for 8 years and the formula that kept the ratings high enough to warrant 8, and now 9, years for this show. It is asking not to diminish one of the core, lead, integral characters who helped carry this show for 8 years, one of the strongest female leads in television, not just sci-fi, in favor of an over-the-top female sci-fi caricature.

Who? I'm sorry I don't know who that is. But hey, have you seen Cam Mitchell? He's swell. Have you seen Vala? She's a blast to write for and I can't even tell you what's going to come out of her mouth next. Pay attention--the show is FarGate, not SG-1.
God, you'd think people would keep up instead of asking idiotic questions.
I vote for bringing back Janet... but since that is possibly unlikely...
Why don't you just bring back Teryl. It's sci-fi, you can explain it away - somehow. Plus it would add some great angst to SG-1, after all if you bring her back evil, and she is wearing the face of one of their beloved friends. It could be great.
C'mon, give it a shot. It might give the team a chance to be a team again aswell...
Can't say I'm looking forward to Grace Under Pressure but I do like McKay so maybe it won't be so bad. I love Conversion and The Defiant One they were some of my favourite eps but I'm a huge Sheppard fan, in fact I love all the cast of Atlantis they rock. Can't wait for the second half of Season 2 of Atlantis at least Sam will only be in one ep then and hopefully she won't appear in Season 3. Please keep Sam on SG1 where she belongs and I hope for SG1 fans sake that MS signs his contract soon.
Now I'm off to finish watching my wonderful Season 1 Atlantis DVD's that arrived today. Love all the extras guys.
Can't wait to see Grace Under Pressure--love sam/mckay interaction!
And I think the second half of season 9 of SG-1 looks pretty good--particularly looking forward to The Fourth Horseman Part II, Ripple Effect, and Off the Grid! Hoping we see alot of TEAM interaction in the second half like others have said---interaction where they really care about each other.
Anime recommendation -- Planetes, which is very good hard sci-fi. The anime focuses on what happens after a passenger spaceplane gets taken out by a stray piece of orbital debris. Basically, it's the story of the lives of astronauts who clean up after space garbage -- about what some people will do to live and work in space no matter how crappy the job is and no matter how little the rest of the world thinks of them; how incredibly important unglamorous work can be to the survival of a society; and how the drive to explore and escape from the rest of human experience battle constantly with the pull of emotions such as love. It's very hard sci-fi; no sound in space, a girl who grows up in the reduced gravity of the moon is abnormally tall, etc. The name of the anime, "Planetes," in Greek means "wanderers" and is the word from which "planets" is derived -- a nice double entendre.
Joe,
First, I'd like to say, as a native of San Francisco, WELCOME!! Hope you enjoy the trip, and I'd recommend some good restaurants, but people here seemed to have already listed a couple of 'em. You'll love San Francisco. What's not to love? :D
Second, I gotta echo a couple of other posters. I'm an Atlantis fan, and the idea of Carter coming on and "out-shining" all others scares me. Weir and Teyla, my fav two characters, are barely getting their time as it is. Now, you're adding on a big character like Carter? I'm not going to presume to tell you what to do with your own show, but please, listen to the fans. Listen to what they have to say. And then make your decision.
Other than that, I just had a couple of questions. Any of S3 Atlantis episodes centering around Weir? Teyla? Or perhaps, Weir *and* Teyla? Those two act like strangers sometimes! A little more development of your existing Atlantis females would be greatly appreciated!!
Take care. And thanks for putting yourself out like this. Your blog is always entertaining!

Why are you, really?

FORGET everything these people are saying about stargate and atlantis.
Both shows are doing just fine! I love the direction and writing. It is very diffrent, but that does not make it bad.
Season 9 was hard to adjust to, but you have the framework for a very unique tanget for a show.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Yes Brian, you're a true fan. We're all just wankers who are here to bother Joe. We don't really like the show and that's why we're so upset about everything. If we really like Stargate we'd get down on our knees and kiss Joe's ass for being alive and doing his job. All this true fan BS is getting pretty hard to take anymore. So are the lowered standards by which people are judging the show anymore. Stop trying to get us to apologize for wanting the show to do better. It has before.
I just want to say that I like Vala. And I like Sam. I just don't like the fact having one women on the show precludes the other.
You have two women on SGA. And while, yes, these two women are sorely underdeveloped, have absolutely no screentime together, and are constantly being bogged down and identified solely by their respective ships (Weir/Sheppard and Teyla/Ronon) - they still show potential. You've got great stuff to work with, and more often than not, you hit the mark with these women. Weir, especially, shows promise. And Teyla this season has dramatically improved.
The above proves that you can at least attempt to have two women on one show. Sam and Vala could be quite amusing together. Not to mention, by showing some mutual friendship between them, you could reduce tension among their vying fan-bases.
But by shipping Sam off to Atlantis to make room for Vala, it just makes all those "I'm anti-Vala 'cause I love Sam so much" fanatics fundamentally right. I use to tell people that you didn't have to like one or the other. It was possible to like both.
Now, I'm being proven wrong. You guys are making it "one or the other." Why?
I can honestly recommend "Bix" when you're in SF. A cool, happening, artistic, modern place. And you can't beat the building rehab they've done on the location.
Also, we had a fantastic Moroccan dinner at a place decorated with cheesy, gleeful aplomb as a bedouin tent. It had amazingly great live music, so we were sold on the place before we even got the food. ...and THEN the belly-dancers came out. (not figuratively. Just literally. It is SF, after all. *wink*)
I've been a fan of the show since the begining. (It was the only reason I subscribed to Showtime way back...). But I have to admit, the charaters have been a little soft this year, leaving me feel like they're in a rut. I enjoyed Prototype and Beachhead very much. Atlantis is very cool as well.
But I must mention, and I hope this gets to all the writers, producers, and powers-that-be... we need some help on time line issues. I under stand Atlantis left Earth "Several MILLION years ago". Atlantis was abandoned ~10,000 years ago. There is a huge amount of time here. And if you can tie that in with the Frozen Antartic Ancient left behind in the episode FROZEN, that would be SWEET. I mean, you all had to have a plan by showing her at the begining of RISING?
One last comment, in previous seasons, there were ancient Dr Jackson was figuring out Ancient writting and language. When Jack (RDA) had Ancient knowledge downloaded into his mind, care was taken to demonstrate Ancient spoken language. Both times that is happened (Lost City 1 +2). So when the Atlantis team shows up in Pegasus, what happen to Ancient Speak? There is tons to explorer here. And speaking of exploring.... HOW Bout the CITY?

Oh you're brilliant! LOL! Couldn't have said it better. :)
And while I'm posting you know what you producer folk need? A female producer with different views and maybe some sensible ideas and if we're lucky she might even be able to write a story for the female castmembers. Yah I know, that'll be the day...
"Can anyone recommend some great restaurants. So far, I've heard Gary Danko, Masa's, and La Folie are the places to to."
My fav place is McCormik's. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, as I'm way to tired to read all 130 posts before mine. But trust me on the resteraunt. Best sea-food I've ever had.

You mean a girl?? Eww, girls are icky.
Joe, we need more episodes like that of the mini-series (ep. 1-5). Episodes 1-5 were unbelievably well done. The humor, the acting, the dynamic. Everything. Then, something changed during "Beachhead." I don't know what exactly it was, but suddenly the life of the show dissipated. For season 10, we need more of what we saw during the first five episodes, nevermind the fact that the ratings declined to a season low with the "season finale." The choice is obvious. The audience wants to see more of what you graced us with during the mini-series.
Glad to hear you to have lost your love for Simpson Family, because if your dising Family guy for shame. I was also wondering if you have made it to the Fifth season of Babylon 5 yet?
There was a Stargate Miniseries?!!! How did I miss this? Wait, wait. Episodes 1-5? You mean Children of the Gods through Broca Divide? I admit, I liked those episodes too, but I never considered them a "mini series". But hey, I can go with it. They're certainly way better than the episodes we've gotten this season, especially the first few. Like the poster above, I'd like more episodes like those and less episodes like I've seen from the first five episodes of season nine. I get Beachead tommorrow, so I guess I'll see.
Miniseries hmmm? I'll take a wild stab in the dark here and guess that you A. Are a huge Daniel Jackson fan almost exclusively (if not exclusively), B. Possibly couldn't care less whether or not Carter lives or dies (that might be too harsh...you might just prefer her to just never be on screen again) C. Want Vala to replace Sam on the team and D. Spend most of your time on the Sony boards as that's where the "5-1/4 episode miniseries" phrase was coined.
Of course, during this "miniseries," the brand new (supposedly vital) team member was completely wallpapered as was Teal'c and Carter wasn't even around. There wasn't even a team during that so-called "miniseries"...just lots of Daniel and Vala.
And while you might be disappointed with the episodes from Beachhead on, which amazingly coincides with the end of the Daniel/Vala Hour and Sam's returning (although I'm certain that has nothing to do with your feelings on this matter), I and many others were relieved beyond words (command issue notwithstanding) because Sam FINALLY returned and the band finally got back together.
Now if we can have one of those team episodes we all seem to be craving and actually clean up some of the baffling and illogical choices that were made this year regarding the team and the leads, I'd be a happy fan.
I know. Too wild and crazy a notion to hope for, right?

If you feel like crossing "THE" bridge, Poggio up in Sausalito is enjoyable; mind the spandex warriors - I've seen them nearly run over tourists in order to fufill a desperate need to run a stop sign. Hope you enjoy your stay.
Hey Joe, you forgot to mention the happy Mitchell fans!! LOL He rock and rolls, totally!!
You are right about how weird Lost is getting but I'm sucked in at this point, just like Alias.
LMAO at some of the new stories for next season sound exciting and I can't wait! Please bring back Ford and don't kill Lorne! (btw, Kavan Smith was in about 5 Outer Limit eps, which you probably already know.)
Though I live in the Bay Area and worked in SF for years, I don't go to SF any more. But it sounds like you have the names of a few great places. Enjoy youself and try not to drive too much in the city!!! Or walk at night for that matter!
Thanks so much for not flinching at the trolls and for coming back to us. I appreciate your updates and humor! *cheese* Love always
Joe,
Please, please, please pass along the word to the other PTB that many of us 30-something women who previously enjoyed Stargate did not at all enjoy the beginnings of season 9 when we saw Vala in very revealing outfits, acting in a manner that we find to be insulting and degrading towards women.
We've enjoyed Stargate in the past because it had strong female characters, who did not need to display large amounts of cleavage to be sexy and attractive. Don't you guys realize that a woman can be attractive and sexy without dressing like a dominatrix? It may appeal to teenaged and 20-something males, but to 30-something women, it's just a turn off.
And yes, myself and my friends are only a small portion of fandom (10 individuals total), but we are being totally turned off by this Vala character.
Please tone her down, and cover her up a little more if she returns for season 10. She could be a very interesting character, but right now, she is just too over-the-top, and too disgusting and degrading to be of any value.
Hi, I just read one of your previous entries, and agree with you wholeheartedly. It is one thing to fairly criticize a performance, piece of writing, or direction, but never at a personal level. That said, in the episode Beachead, the scene where Carter asks 'what's with the new backup singer?" was so natural, yet the subsequent scenes appeared to be somewhat stilted. Was there a change in directors or some other reason that resulted in the change?
Thanks
Saint Caylynn, don't exagerate... I'm about a few years older than you, also a woman, and I love Vala's character very much, the way that she is.
Congrats on the new seasons! But lets not let our Atlantis crew get too comfy. The Daedalus does have mechanical probs now and then, yes?
As for Shep and Tey - No. Teyla is definitely Ronon's girl.

Well as a 46yr old, "old school" feminist, I love Vala. She's someone who's aware and happy with her sexuality, using it when it suits her but not resorting to "a little girl" when it doesn't work. She's also a survivor who carved a place for herself in the universe after being de-gou'led, using not only her sexuality but wit, intelligence and humour. She's also more than capable of compassion, as shown in TPTB and willing to put herself in danger to save others (Beachead). She's like a female version of Jack Sparrow, does he act in a manner that is insulting and degrading towards men or is it just women who have to cover up and act coy, not revel and enjoy their sexuality?
I also know plenty of other women in their 30s/40s who love Vala.
How grey the universe would be without Valas and Jack Sparrows. If "the revolution" taught us anything, it should have been to be happy in who we are, whether that's enjoying our sexuality or geeking out over science. There's room for the whole spectrum of femaleness (humanness) to be expressed and celebrated.
yabyumpan
Mr. Mallozzi - When you refer to upcoming storylines, you use "spinning" and "coming up with". What's the difference between them?
On the Vala front, I like her in spite of myself. She's a great foil.
I still want Jack resolution but I know I wont be seeing naything until January so I'll be good.
...And on the Teal'c front, I am getting all the Stargate seasons on Netflix and I was jsut mentioning ow often Teal'c is the character that makes me smile the most. I love seeing his reactions to Jonas. So fabulous. I do miss the Fab Four and the comderaderie. Which is probably spelled wrong. I was ok when they introduced Jonas, but I'm not ok with Mitchell and I can't positively tell you why. I don't feel like he is trying to get the others to accept or that he is even worried about it. I feel like he takes his place for granted. "I'm now the head of SG1, bow to me!" I love Jonas. He is quirky and fun and not Daniel. Mitchell is lame and not funny and trying to hard ot be Jack.
She's like a female version of Jack Sparrow, does he act in a manner that is insulting and degrading towards men or is it just women who have to cover up and act coy, not revel and enjoy their sexuality?
the reason jack sparrow worked in Pirates of the Caribbean is because the whole movie was a farce. It was a spoof, a lark, a silly diversion. At no point in time did it even attempt to be a drama or something credible. And in that context, Jack Sparrow was fantastic comic relief.
But would Jack Sparrow have fit in in Shawshank Redemption? Or in Silence of the Lamb? Or in any other drama movie?
Vala, if you plunk her down in Andromeda or Hercules, shows that were also spoofs, would have fit right in. She's another Callisto - just not quite as nuts.
but in the context of a show that, for the past eight years, hasn't felt the need to sell sex and bury itself in double entendre after double endtndre just for the quick and cheap laugh, she doesn't fit.
It's like having Aris Boch join the cast as a regular, or Togar - Dom Deluise's character.
Vala is better suited to Wormhole X-Treme than she is Stargate.
OK, because Claudia Black is so dang classy, she's quite a few steps above Andromeda, Hercule and Wormhole X-Treme. ;)
But if the network WANTS to turn SG-1 into a farcical spoof, it's good to know these things in advance.
Vala can be great for some comic relief, but it really can't be every other line.
~ DoS
I am a 30 something female and I love Vala. It never occured to me to think that she degraded all women because she isn't ALL women. She is an alien--a former host. She does what she thinks she has to do to survive. I think there is a lot of room for growth in the character.
I don't what to start a feud because overall, I like Sam too. But the way she was written over the last couple of seasons--mooning over Jack and can't be happy without a man and sleeping with one guy while in love with another--well, that bothered me much more as a woman than anything we've seen so far about Vala.
So here's hoping that BOTH Sam and Vala can be utilized effectively in the show in season 10.
Beth
Oy, the double standard.
Jack has said things as bad if not worse than Vala and nobody cries about him being a disgrace to all men everywhere.
Vala is fun and unique. Bring her back.
"Fan said as for Shep and Tey, no way Teyla is Ronan's girl."
Teyla Ronan's girl, no way who are you trying to kid. I'm not a shipper but even I can see Teyla is definately Shep's girl, if you want proof look at Conversion that kiss was pretty hot and he didn't even want to apologize for it either. Weir is interested in Shep of that there's no doubt but Shep has his eye on Teyla, what guy wouldn't. There are plenty of scenes to prove that point. Me I prefer to leave the ship out of it and enjoy all the characters ship makes it complicated as we've seen on Stargate where there was no doubt that Sam and Jack were attracted to each other and that made Sam boring especially when Jack left and the fans frustrated. I kept wishing they would make up their minds about each other one way or the other because it became very annoying and spoiled the show for me and the fans have still been left wondering with no closure.
Joe,
Just wanted to say I love SGA! Atlantis was the show that brought me out of my strike against Skiffy when they murdered Farscape.
Atlantis is great! John and Teyla all the way! :-) Love the characters; would love more backstory. How about some mythology or John/Teyla destiny ala Babylon 5's John/Delenn thrown in? Pretty please with hazelnut fudge ice cream on top? I'd even toss in a marachino cherry.
Really enjoying SG1--Vala rocks! Much as I adored Farscape--sniff, sniff--I like Vala a bit more than Aeryn. Critchon's still the best character, though. And Ben is hot. I like the Ori plotline.
Keep up the great work!
Hey, I'm 40 and I think Vala's a hoot. She's so much fun. Sam's got the brains but is kind of dull for me. Sorry. Just my opinion.
I'd like to see them both on the show. But I'd love to see more Vala/Daniel interaction. They seemed to have instant chemistry and work really well together as characters.
Peace!
For anyone who thinks that any given character has it "owed" to them, get real. Since they are fictional characters they deserve no moral consideration what so ever. If the writers and producers of this show want to utilize one character more than another, that's their perogative, it's their show. No character is owed anytime on screen, since they don't really exist. There's really nothing to get overly upset about. It's just a show, a good show mind you, but a piece of fiction none-the-less.

is anybody else getting a tad bored with the oh so tedious and ever so subtle snubbing of carter/tapping in regards to referencing the "5 1/4 episode mini series" at the beginning of season 9?
or am i being too harsh? it makes complete sense that a mini series could end 1/4 of the way through an episode. i'm sure it's just co-incidence that carter arrived back at the same time the "mini series" ended. i'm sure the people who want to see that mini series make a return would be just thrilled to have carter be a part of it.
sorry to sound a bit snarky, but i really am getting sick and tired of hearing about this imaginary "mini series".
i was thrilled to see carter back tonight, although i do think she might have been a tad underused, and it would have made more sense to me to bring her back during the previous episode so that she could help to heal all those people, considering that she too can use the goa'uld healing device.
and i would love to see vala back as a regular guest next year assuming her character had a bit more logical development, as all new characters on a tv show need. (thought daniel was a bit too mean to her during beachead though). and i loved vala's interaction with teal'c tonight too.
Hey Joe, happy birthday.
Whilst I don't care for all the developments on the show, much has been beyond your control and you've all responded the best way you can. It makes me embarrassed for fandom that so many people are so rude, arrogant, ignorant and bullying. All you can do is the best, by your lights. I've never doubted the dedication of the production team and I admire and appreciate the hard work you put in. Thank you, to you and everyone involved in creating/running the show.
Good luck with Season 10/Season 3, to you and the casts.
Im an angry Teal'c fan!
just not the angry part...
but you should have more of him anyway.
I havent seen an entire episode based on him in a while, especially not like the old ones.
I miss the old ones.
But still, not angry.
Your too cool to be angry at.
Thosoe new episodes sound interesting, good luck on getting them finished.
I hope you do.
Always do the Warf and China Town in San Fran :)

you know what i think is part of the problem i have with vala? it's that she's over-the-top [BUT the ppl around her don't respond like it]. the only time i 'really' saw ppl put her in her place was in beachhead. but in 'the ties that bind', with her literally owning the sgc and 'bargaining' with the appropriations committee for continued funding... it was totally and completely unbelievable *because the ppl around her LET her do it*. THEY acted out of character. but hey, what fun would it be if they'd told her to shut up and locked her in a room instead of letting her play the vixen and run lose on the sgc?
i don't like what vala represents to this show. it's losing its class.

how?

No, no, no. I think TPTB want to get across the idea that Sam will never, ever use Goa'uld tech again, and that her blending in Season Two will never be mentioned again. It's a shame, but it's what it is.

"you're more bothered by a woman (SAM) who is questioning her feelings for two men than one (VALA) that uses sex for power and puts ppl's lives in danger for her own greed?"
Because Vala is like Maybourne--greedy; does what she can to get ahead. She is not the hero character and no one (I hope) is going to try and emulate her. She is there to stir things up and get the team into trouble that they have to get out of.
Sam on the other hand IS a hero character and until the seventh season was a darn good role model.
Sally, I've read posts from you before so I know how you feel about Sam and Sam/Jack so you probably see this completely different than me and that's fine.
Suffice to say that some the ways she was portrayed were a bit cringe worthy to me. The ship wars have been fought over and over so I won't go in to specifics. Everybody has their own interpretation.
But I will just say that I have never really been a fan of the idea of Sam/Jack ship because their primary interaction is the airforce and in that venue, they are not equals, and that squicks me right off the bat.
Couple that with the fact that I think most TV romances (look away now, Joe)--this one included--are not very well written and I have an automatic bias, I suppose.
Maybe, they spoiled me early on with how she was written and I was disappointed with what came later 'cause I really do--rightly or wrongly--expect more from the character than teenage romance angst.
YMMV :)
Cheers,
Beth

fair enough, beth. ;)
as much as i love sam/jack ship, i could have done without the extra burden of sam/pete thrown in to make it an angst fest galore. if sam/pete hadn't have been added, sam/jack could have played quietly until need be.
and now... *exasperated snort*. even with sam/jack in the background, we've STILL got sam/other attentions going on... does the pain ever end? :p

Well, dear, you know we hang on every word. Here in the states, without a new episode to disect, we're twisting in the wind, so to speak. This is the price you pay for popularity and an exec-prod credit.
As for Alias, S5, I'm thisclose to deTiVoing. Which is shocking as the only other show I actual gave up on was Charmed. Yes, it really is that bad. I prefer to rewrite the last scene and they all lived ever after. The End. Much easier on the nerves, truly.

Speaking for myself, and being a 32 year old woman, I really enjoyed Vala's outfits and attitude. They were different, and they caused a reaction that served to throw people off. And it obviously worked.
Joe, I just have to say that I'm anticipating the rest of the season more and more as it gets closer to January. We need promo pics to tide us over! ;)
Have fun in SF!
speaking of regs, someone brought up how SO against the regs it probably is for Landry and Lam to work together.
But no one cares about that, because they're not... ya know... angstin' it out.
~ DoS
Well count me in with the 35-40 y.o. women who dislikes vala with an intensity that is hard to describe because of how I see her demeaning the show and the characters and the class the show actually used to try and attain (not to mention she is the worst kind of stereotypical, sci-fi female caricature they could come up with and they never had to resort to that level before). TPTB established the standards for this show over an 8 year period and prior to S9 those standards were usually pretty high - S9 has lowered them to almost underground with vala.

Idiots. Claudia Black is above Hercules? Ha, shows what you know. In that case I do believe that Claudia has degraded herself in the past. It also explains why she has no problem doing it now on SG1 too.

But you do know that the part of Lam is Shanks wife. By the by Joe, not all of the people who watch this show believes that she auditioned for the part. Some believe that Shanks would not sign on for season nine if she was not brought in. True or False?
Riiight. Attack the actor. That makes a whole lot of sense.

Hey Joe:
When are you guys going to write some lines for Teal'c?
Okay, I'll try to step up... angry Teal'c fan here. Umm, something to rant about (girds loins aggressively)... he needs a new eyebrow? Nope, can't get worked up about a damn thing. Sorry. I took a peek at that Sony board to try and put some fire in my belly - boy, folk must get really constipated to have the shit back so far up it falls out of their mouths. So anyway, Carter - I love her - SG-1/Atlantis, the more the better :)
Wait, I thought people were wishing you happy birthday last month. But GW's home page is giving your birthdate (including the year, poor soul, you can't escape) as today (Nov. 16.)
So, if it's today, Happy Birthday. If it was last month...um, happy belated. :-)
Oh yeah: you were looking for angry Teal'c fans...um, "Hey, you talk about spinning Carter and Daniel stories, what about Teal'c stories? Where's Teal'c's spin?" How's that? ;-)
Which is worse? Ragging on a fictional character or insulting real people who dare to have an opinion different from yours?
All this condemnation of negativity rings really hollow.
How about some mythology or John/Teyla destiny ala Babylon 5's John/Delenn thrown in?
The B5 "Delenn" comparisons w/Weir have been discussed for months. Teyla is no Delenn. Despite some mention of her as a leader, we have never seen her lead anything. Delenn lead an entire advanced civilization (far beyond Earth's capabilities), and commanded her own ship in battle.
Teyla as Delenn? I don't think so. She can swing sticks, but she can't devise military strategy or command troops. Besides, Delenn actually wore clothes, and I don't think TPTB would allow Teyla to do that. ;o)
As for the Vala issue - I'm 40, and I love her. She is multi-layered, and not just the hot chick. Her sexual jokes are a defense mechanism for issues long buried. She is tough, witty, manipulative, vulnerable, and fun. I think there is a good heart in her as well, we just need more time with her to see it.
Yes, I am a BIG Carter fan too, but I think TPTB will make every effort to come up with something to please "most" of us. However, ya can't please all the people all the time.
--Please, please, please pass along the word to the other PTB that many of us 30-something women who previously enjoyed Stargate did not at all enjoy the beginnings of season 9 when we saw Vala in very revealing outfits, acting in a manner that we find to be insulting and degrading towards women.--
If you are going to pass things along Joe then please tell the other TPB in your office that there a core of woman over 40 in SG-One fandom who think Vala is amazing. Keep up the good work with this character for us ok.
"I'm sorry, I missed the memo that elected you to speak for all women in this category. If I had, then I could have told you that you don't, and you shouldn't put your words and hang ups in other people's mouths."
Maybe if you had read that post a little better you would have seen that she said MANY 30-something women, not all. Next time, don't go looking for an argument where there isn't one.
Joe, could you please try to avoid any ship on Atlantis? Sam/Jack didn't go so well and the shippers on gateworld are already getting nasty and sniping at each other over whether Sheppard should be with Weir or Teyla.
Hi Joe!
First off, I want to make it clear that I am a fan of both CB and AT. Aeryn Sun and Sam Carter are two of my favorite Sci-fi characters. I also like Vala just the way she is. The problem that I am having a hard time figuring out is how she will fit into the SGC (and possibly SG-1) if you bring her on as a regular character. She was brought in during the first five eps to fill a hole and she provided both the necessary tension and comic relief. And she did such a wonderful job that it is hard to remember if any of the other characters were even there. Vala is a character that demands to be the center of attention – and while I liked this in the first five eps, it hurts the development of the other characters overall.
How do you see her actually fitting in at the SGC full-time? When she was stuck there with Daniel, it drove her absolutely crazy (to the point that she felt it necessary to try to seduce him for recreation). I just don’t see her being happy there and I don’t think she would actually want to stay at the SGC in the long run. Likewise, I don’t see the Air Force allowing her to be a part of their flagship team. She’s fun, clever, witty, and her own woman. She is a lone wolf that would not work well with a team. She needs to be out on her own in the galaxy doing her thing (and SG-1 has more important things to do than to go gallivanting around with her). So…do you plan on molding the show to accommodate the character (thus destroying the concept the show was built on), or do you plan on changing her character so she actually fits in at the SGC (which would completely destroy the lovely and vibrant character you have created)?
"Stargate: Vala" spin-off would be the best solution to solve the problem...
What are you talking about? Haven't the producers told you often enough that it doesn't matter what comes out of Claudia's, I mean Vala's, mouth. She's just so damn gorgeous. Listen all you nay-sayers, we'll work out all that story crap later. Don't worry, we'll make her fit. Haven't you seen how well Mitchell fits into the story? That guy's a crackshot pilot; SG-1 was his destiny. We'll do something similar with Vala. Forget about those pesky original characters, "You'll love the new guy". And girl, apparently too.
Sheesh, it's always the same thing with you fans--tie up loose, unfinished stories, more character development, more original stories, less homages. You just keep your eyes on all the bared flesh, freaky-cool aliens, and huge, grossly expensive CGI explosions. That's what we're all about now. Boy, you fans make me sorry we ever made those last eight, high quality, character and story driven seasons.
Sheppard was with Ford; now he's dealing with Ronon. Or McKay, depending on whom you talk to.
This Teyla/Weir choice is a smokescreen, people.
;-)

She's, no doubt about it, but with this actually very stupid comment PDL offended extremely talented actress and her fans, both men and women, for whom MATTERS very much what comes out of Vala's mouth. Tell PDL to think twice next time before he's going to make another remark like that one.
So would the 30 something women that love Vala happen to be Daniel fans by any chance? I'd like her if I were, cause Danny gets oh so much screentime, he doesn't do all that much, but boy can he roll his eyes...
:attempts to be an angry Teal'c fan:
Ummmmmmm........more Teal'c please?
:fails utterly:
Yay 'lantis! The Kindred sounds fun. I want some dark side-ness, though I think compared to SG-1 , it's considerably darker.
Love Vala. She's the funny Valley Girl from space. HILARIOUS.
You will have to inform us once Season 3 and 10 air which episodes where Delicious Fat Guy and Wraith Fight Club.
Thanks for putting up with us, Joe! I always love reading about upcoming Stargate stuff and like hearing about what you are watching on TV.
Also, are you done with ice cream making for the year? V. v. sad.
- Kitanne
Oh, and I forgot.
Happy Birthday!
I'm telling you to think twice, anonymous. If you really think that CB got hired because of her brains or acting skills your cracked. She's a decent actress, as is AT, CJ, and MS, but that's really NOT why she was hired. In case you didn't notice, Sci-fi is doing penance for their treatment of Farscape. Both CB's and BB's hiring for SG-1 is driven entirely by studio politics. Whatever CB has to say doesn't matter, whatever Vala says doesn't matter. She's here to stay because the real PTB, Sci-fi, say so. Haven't you seen how they're shoe-horning her into the end of season nine with the rediculous, campy, universally reviled space baby plotline? Cripes, the actress was pregnant for god sakes. Still, she apparently is available at Skiffy's beck and call. So no, it doesn't matter what comes out of her mouth. She goes where and when Sci-fi commands, regardless of her own personal situation and regardless of what is good for the show.
So would the 30 something women that love Vala happen to be Daniel fans by any chance?
Actually, I didn't actually become a Daniel fan until this season, in part, because of his interactions with Vala.
I'm just going to ignore the rest of your comment, you were obviously having a "stoopid while trying to be oh-so clever" momment, it was probably all that bile backing up to your brain ;o)
Hey Joe, I didn't realize that my comic book comment earlier would hit so very close to home. I've just read about Mckay's upcoming "Hulk" episode.
Ha!
Keep'em coming. Maybe we can do an episode where some intergalactic feuding warriors need human pawns to fight for them in their sacred duel.....oh crap. Anyway, your "homage" to King Lear sounds deliciously campy. Can we do an Evil Dead episode where Rodney, Ronan, Weir, and Teyla go zombie??? I smell season finale!!!
On the Anime front have you tried watching Fullmetal Alchemist??? It is one of the best anime series I've seen in a long time. The Vision of Escaflowne, Berserk, and Hajime no Ippo are also rather good. I think you can find Escaflowne and Berserk on DVD or maybe on tv??? I'm not sure if those are airing in America or not.
Regarding the comment above, I am a Daniel fan and I don't enjoy most of what Vala does or says.
Yes, SG-1 is missing some of the irreverance of RDA/Jack, but Mitchell picks up that part fairly well. Teal'c even tosses some in now that the character understands sarcasm. But, for Vala, who is usually obnoxious, who became "attached to Daniel" through manipulative menas (twice!), the irreverance and sarcasm is just wrong.
Vala hasn't earned the right to have us laugh at her sarcasm. Watching Daniel wiggle uncomfortably in each and every Vala scene is painful. Yes, we was a geek...but his character has grown to be the strong intelligent team member of Season 8. In S9, suddenly he is some whipped manipulated puppy dog.
I love when Michael gets airtime. But, truly. Make it stop. I am sure the actress is wonderful. Michael might even love the scenes with her from an actor's point of view. But, please, SG1 is not the show for that. Bring back the team feel.

I think Joe should really explain this.

I'm not trying to be particularly stoopid (uhm no comment there) or clever, and just that there's no confustion I do like Daniel. He's never been my favourite, but I missed him in s6 and I was glad he came back. But back on topic, the way he reacts or the lack of reaction to what Vala is doing is making the whole thing even more ridiculous. Stargate used to have class, back in the days when it was about the team and the stories rather than the sexual innuendo or bare arms and cleavage. McKay in Atlantis is over the top too, but what makes it funny is how all the other characters react to him. With Vala there's just a whole lot of eye rolling and good old Daniel hasn't the courage to say anything to her. Makes the whole thing very tiring very fast.
But hey if you think it's funny and great then I'll let you decide who's got bile in their brains...
Happy bday Joe!
Looking at "Dec. 13" I suddenly realized that I really really miss snow. Sure, it snowed yesterday here, but today it was spring. Smelled like spring, felt like spring, had spring-like temperature and weather. Bah... I guess that's what we get for causing global warming, eh?
Alias: ep 6 (Solo) is my fav from the 5th season at the moment. Seemed just like season 1 a bit except Rachel has WAY more guts than season 1 Syd. I'm waiting for ep 8 (Horizon) which has the return of 2 or 3 much-loved characters. (Or so the promo pics and spoilers go)
On to Stargate!
The new season sounds very interesting!
LOL, sorry. My mind blanked on what to say next.
Teyla Ronan's girl, no way who are you trying to kid. I'm not a shipper but even I can see Teyla is definately Shep's girl, if you want proof look at Conversion that kiss was pretty hot and he didn't even want to apologize for it either.
Did you see how he was acting before the kiss? Creepy! Ultra-creey! And he even said at the end that it was out of character for him.
Weir is interested in Shep of that there's no doubt but Shep has his eye on Teyla, what guy wouldn't. There are plenty of scenes to prove that point.
I am not a shipper, and maybe you pick up on things that I don't, but I really don't get how you can say Sheppard/Teyla have plenty of scenes together. They barely have any scenes together this season! Do they even talk? I don't think so.
I don't want Sheppard/Weir either (please Joe, don't go there either), but at least they talk. They have sometype of friendship (Joe, please keep it that way). In season two, I saw no such friendship between Sheppard and Teyla.
Anonymous said:
"In season two, I saw no such friendship between Sheppard and Teyla."
Of course you didn't. Season Two is the McKay show, co-starring his dour buddy John Sheppard. Together they galavant across the Pegasus Galaxy, stumbling through one mishap after another, inexplicably escaping harm without discovering solutions to their problems or finding any allies whatsoever.
The show also has a couple of recurring characters. There's Dr. Weir, Shep's main love interest, Dr. Zelenka, McKay's chief punching bag and general receipient of of his insults, Ronon, an unstable sort of fellow prone to extreme outbursts of anger directed at the air around him, and Teyla, who's purpose I have yet to discover. At one point in time I also thought there was a Dr. something or the other, but I was wrong. There isn't. Ooh, yeah, and there's a new guy named Caldwell. He's the leader of a gang called the Daedalus Boys. They like to walk around Atlantis in a group of three to five, snapping their fingers as they walk to and from their spaceship.
Well, that just about covers it. I was going to mention the Wraith and tell you all about them, but then I realized that is everything about them. Eh, such is life, maybe next episode we'll actually learn something about them. Stay tuned!!
I'd just like to say, the post up above . . . nice snarking!
Teyla, who's purpose I have yet to discover.
To wear absurdly small clothing. Duh.
A very happy birthday to a hard-working, dedicated writer, who I hope does not take some of the wackier criticisms too seriously.
I sometimes believe that fans forget that this is a *television programme*, run by human beings who believe strongly in its integrity and do their "darndest" (is that really a word? oh dear... ;-)) to put their best talent and effort into it.
That in mind, I say: Well done as always in season 9, and looking forward to season 10.
All the best as your prep heats up. :-)
J.
I think if you like Dual you might enjoy Neon Genesis Evangelion. Eva is an older anime but Dual kind of rips off a lot of it's stuff from Eva...watch the subtitled version if possible. This title had some of the worst dubbing ever.
Ha, ha! Daedalus Boys! That one really is terrific. I'll play.
Caldwell: The military will run this op, you stubbornly humanistic, yet irresistibly fetching redheaded siren. You haven't seen the last of me in this episode, Dr. Weir.
Weir (tiredly rubbing forehead): God, I really wish that weren't true.
Caldwell (smirking arrogantly) Ahh, playing hard to get, eh? Methinks the lady doth protest too much.
Weir: Oh, you see right through me Stev--I mean Colonel Caldwell.
(Aside): Egad! And you people are wondering why they're going to ship me with Sheppard?
Caldwell (sneering): Let's get back to the ship, Daedalus Boys. (Exeunt, snapping fingers)

Happy Birthday Joe!!!!

Joe, you folks must be absolutely cracked to put Carter on Atlantis. It's an insanely bad idea, as everyone online has been trying to tell you. Please, please, reconsider. Don't be so prideful that you just have to prove everyone wrong. It's a bad idea. It's unfair to viewers of SG-1 and to viewers of Atlantis. Why don't you guys see that?

So true, IMO. Claudia is great as Vala, no doubt about it. The problem, in many people's opinion, is that there is no place for her on SG-1 as a regular character. But as you said, she's so much fun for the writers to write for, Skiffy loves her so much that it just doesn't matter that Vala doesn't fit...damn it, she's going to be there anyway.
Just read that Rachel Luttrell is saying that there are major crossovers planned for next season, Joe. That really sucks. And, from their apparent reactions, so do Rachel Luttrell and Amanda Tapping. Fans of both SG-1 and Atlantis think it sucks. People who haven't even seen the shows think it sucks. You know why? Because it sucks.
I'm not deluded enough to think that any of you writers have the balls to admit a bad idea and change things, but I'd love for you guys to prove me wrong on that one.
You make two shows. It is beyond anyone why you want to try and make them into one. What, can't Atlantis stand on its own merits? It really is looking more and more like the little brother series that couldn't. What's the new plan? Keep SG-1 on as long as possible, long after the show has naturally come to an end all to prop up the failing, less than stellar spin off? To hell with the great show you had for 8 years, you'll just ruin it and it's characters in order to keep Atlantis alive?
And what about the Atlantis cast? Do you have no confidence in them at all? Weir and Teyla are already grossly underdeveloped. Bringing in Carter will only push them further into the background. Sheppard will automatically be Carter's subordinate and Mckay will also necesarily return to his previous role as not-as-smart-or-capable-as-Carter. Where does that leave Atlantis? Where does it leave SG-1? My God, this is a horrendously bad idea. THis is a show killing idea. I wish you guys would just pack it in if you have to resort to stunts like this. None of you seem capable of making a decent show any longer.
Atlantis, major crossovers with SG1, well there goes another show I was enjoying. So it looks like I'll only be enjoying Atlantis for 10 more eps and then I'll have to find another show to watch because there's no way I'm watching crossovers with SG1 and Sam taking centre stage on Atlantis. I love Atlantis it's not SG1 it's a seperate show. That's so unfair to the characters and actors on Atlantis you aren't giving them a chance to develop. Once SG1 finishes and it can't go on forever you will have destroyed any chance of Atlantis standing on it's own two feet. Not all Atlantis fans are SG1 fans in fact many of them no longer watch SG1 because they don't like the way it's changed. I wish you would reconsider this very, very bad idea and it's pretty obvious the fans don't like it either.
What's the matter, Joe? Cameron Mitchell looking like too weak of a character when Carter is around? Not the super leader you thought he'd be? Shipping Carter off to Atlantis is a coward's way out of the problem, and you know it. You can toss out all the lines you want, try and spin it however you want, but you guys are conceding defeat. You've written yourselves into a corner, a corner that makes you all look like a bunch of hacks, and now you're f-cking up both shows in order to try and fix it. What happened to "no crossovers"? Keep the SG-1 cast on SG-1. Keep the Atlantis cast on Atlantis. And try to write good stories for both series. You guys are absolutely ruining both shows. Try to treat your actors with a little more respect than you have been the past two years.
I can't believe that any of you actually think it's a good idea.
they don't care about us fans. they only care about getting paid. it doesnt matter if we like an idea or not. i like atlantis. i don't watach sg1. its been on way to long for me to catch up. i hate this new plan for atlantis. is it true that the actors are unhappy about it? why dont they listen to the acotrs? why dont they listen to fans?
Sorry, Joe, but I'm with the rest of them. I can't help but hate the idea of such a massive crossover. It wreaks of lazy, effortless writing. As if the whole fandom wasn't angry enough about the way you guys have been handling both shows. RDA's exit, SG-1's command, Vala, Mitchell's lack of anything, Rainbow Sun Franks' firing, the disturbing lack of Beckett, Weir, Teyla, adn Ronan development, Atlantis' unoriginality, etc. Now there's this, too.
Let me ask you this, and I hope you answer, what do you think you guys have gotten right lately?
Come on, Joe, how about coming on and telling us that Carter on Atlantis and serious, serious crossovers actually aren't going to happen? You mentioned in an earlier blog that "nothing has been decided". Please tell me that it's been decided to scrap any plans to shove Carter to Atlantis.
Joe, will we ever see the Tok'ra again?
I don't know how this conversation got started, but I'll continue it. Weir and Teyla need more development and screentime. Desperately. They're like secondary characters or something. An afterthought to the men of SGA. Isn't Weir suppose to be the leading women? Isn't Teyla suppose to be . . . something?
I've checked out spoilers for season two, and while "The Long Goodbye" seems to be a solid Weir episode, is one episode per season really good enough to be "leading woman?" How about Teyla? Is she ever going to be the center of an episode? EVER? How about you cut back on the 18-out-of-20 Shep-and-Rodney centric episode and share the love a little?
You guys really need to reconsider this whole bring-Carter-on-SGA. She's had nearly a decade to flush out her character. And not only are you disrespecting that by shipping her off to Atlantis, you're also screwing over Weir and Teyla even more. I agree with some of the posts up above. A little development for your EXISTING female characters would be appreciated, before you start bring in Veteran-Carter.
hi, joe,
don't forget you've got a LOT of interesting things to write yet for carter. you've only scratched the surface.

sam/jack didn't go well because the ship was stretched out too far. and with too little resolution. and with too little payoff of *seeing* them as a happy and functioning couple.
i'm not saying this to you (the person i've quoted), just mentioning that pulling the 'will they/won't they' for 9 seasons has made a lot of ppl frustrated.
show 'em together, joe, and show them *happy*.

Joe I know you guys think that cyber fans are only a small mminority so why listen but remember this people meters are only in a small minority of homes and SCI FI channel definately acts on what they say with their ratings.
The fans of both SG1 and Atlantis are against crossovers and Sam on Atlantis guess the people meters will get to decide who is right unfortunately by then it will be too late because both shows will have already finished filming by the time we see the second half of season 3.
Hokey, its starting to get to me now. Still November, I would know if it was December, its not, really. Not December, cross my heart, Joey. Can I call you Joey? No? Didn't think so.
A a slighly more pertinent note. I'd love to see Vala back for Season Ten (which I think is a great idea) and I'd also love to Carter go to Atlantis for half the season (for reasons I feel I should not disclose at this time). Luck with the pitching.
I'm sure there was something else I was going to say, but I'm too busy worrying about the date to remember.

of COURSE skiffy is calling the shots. which is why vala WILL be back, and WILL be forced into the show, and it doesn't matter a whit that she's not suited in the slightest for a starring role - which, IMHO, is what it is. Vala is to join the cast so they can reduce Amanda to a recurring character so they can get rid of that nasty old woman who so inconvenienced them by DARING to have a child - CB is of course immune from this because she's ex-farscape, she's special.
Ben and Claudia are pawns of Scifi who want nothing more than to try and re-create farscape without admitting that's what they're doing so that they can have the show without paying the proper creators for swiping thier show.
If you don't like the idea of AT on atlantis, blame Scifi. it's thier manipulations and meddling that's causing it
If you don't like the emphasis on sex and stupidity, blame Scifi. they may as well be writing the scripts because they're doing all but dictating the words
Claudia and Ben ARE just pawns.
oh, and the Sam bashers that are loving the idea of more of a focus on Daniel with her gone and have been trying to get AT fired for the past couple of years, just wait for it. With Amanda shunted over to Atlantis, who do you think will be next on Skiffy's hit list?????
Joe,
With the above post, who's idea was it to have the chess game--writers/TPTB. Because I seem to recall Jack is good at everything else, except chess.
What I'm really getting at is, was RDA playing the role of Jack. Or RDA there all along and not acting at all?

of COURSE skiffy is calling the shots. which is why vala WILL be back, and WILL be forced into the show, and it doesn't matter a whit that she's not suited in the slightest for a starring role - which, IMHO, is what it is.
And you dare to call yourself Rygel? REAL Rygel would never said so! Idiot.
Ok, Joe, I was at said convention. Let me remove all doubt from your mind and tell you that Rachel Lutrell was extremely uncomfortable and unsure of herself when talking about Atlantis next season. Some characters are going to be screwed over by Carter's presence, period. You won't avoid it. That makes two principal actresses now who have reacted badly to this proposed stunt. And one of them is actually Amanda Tapping. How many people need to tell you this is a bad idea before you "writers" realize that it's a bad idea?
So, Atlantis really can't stand on its own, huh? I figured as much.
How many people need to tell you this is a bad idea before you "writers" realize that it's a bad idea?
it's not the writers who need to get a clue, they're just trying to work with the crud that scif/mgm/sony hands them.
Shanks said it himself, that the actors don't matter as much anymore. If Sony thought that Martha Stewart would pull ratings they'd find a way to put her on the show.
Joe,
Eight years I've been watching this goddamn show religiously. Showtime, syndication, stargate mondays, scifi fridays, I've watched them all. But I'm done now. The show has fallen so far I can't believe it. I know you don't care, and I know you won't change anything because of what I say, but I still want to let you know. You've lost another long time fan, a fan of Stargate SG-1. I don't know what the hell this cliched dribble your foisting upon us now is, but it's not SG-1. Thanks for making me feel like I've wasted a decade of my life investing in this show. Jackass.
If you're doing Tadich grill you have to sit at the bar and have cioppino - best you'll ever eat.
Let me remove all doubt from your mind and tell you that Rachel Lutrell was extremely uncomfortable and unsure of herself when talking about Atlantis next season
I'm very sorry to hear that Rachel Luttrell is unsure of her place in Season 3. I think Teyla has really come into her own this season, and her chemistry with Ronon is a joy to watch. Is there a con report about this on-line somewhere?
Let me join in the chorus of 'don't crossover the shows' voices. Have the courage to write separately for the 2 universes you've created. Have the courage to do what needs to be done with the casts to preserve the shows' creative integrity.
It's looking like Teyla is going to be sacrificed to make way for Sam/AT on Atlantis. We've already lost Ford and now Teyla is in danger. What is wrong with the writers of this show. It has so much potential and the characters are wonderful and so very different from SG1. We at Atlantis don't want SG1 on our show. Please let Atlantis stand on it's own two feet. Moving Sam to Atlantis is a very, very bad idea. Please keep the two shows seperate.
And on a postive note,
Joe,
SFX Magazine had a readers' favorite poll. SG-1 did pretty well. Someone's still watching. ;)

2. Some folk here are gutless, spineless cowards who are saying hateful vile crap about people without the decency to sign their name to it or the wherewithal to prove what they're saying is true.
3. Some folk here have succumbed to the delusion that just because they watch the show they somehow have the right to dictate what happens on the show. You have one right only -- turn it on, or turn it off.
4. For the record as a 40+ woman, I love Vala. Happy to see her on board. Am finding her funny and interesting.
Before you say what you're saying here, ask yourself: would I say these things to Joe Malozzi's face, or the face of anyone about whom I'm speaking? If the answer is no, then shut the hell up.

it's not the writers. If you feel the need to blame anyone, blame the folks at Sony/mgm/scifi that are foisting the character of vala onto Stargate and pushing Sam aside.
That is the root of the issue.
they are bound and determined to add vala and since the pre-conception is that stargate simply cannot handle two female characters at once and are - for once - behaving honorably and not firing AT like they fired Corin to make room for Shanks, the writers are making room for their actors the best they can.
So if you hate the idea of Sam on Atlantis, then convince folks that there is room for both Sam and Vala on Stargate, or tell them that you'd rather have Sam instead of Vala.
The shoehorning of Vala is what is creating the character shifting. Plain and simple
Hey Karen,
Shut the hell up. And I'll say that to your face if you so desire.
Jim
For the love of all that is holy, don't move Amanda Tapping to Atlantis. I admire her and love her character on SG1, but shifting her to Atlantis would put a damper on things, as others here have said.
Atlantis is great the way it is. Any Rodney/Sam interaction would be cliched.
Vala is a funny character, but to me she is not SG1. I would prefer her to be 2nd to Sam and not on the show too much. Vala is like the lovable character you want to see now and then, but grating if you see her too often.
"The shoehorning of Vala is what is creating the character shifting. Plain and simple" I totally agree. I don't want Teyla to be shunted, because I think her character has great potential.
When in San Francisco, make sure you go to Ghirardelli Square. They have great chocolates, and you might find something to add to your ice cream.
I believe the dark side of the force has invaded your blog. I can't imagine people are getting this riled up over the proposed changes. I thought Stargate was make-believe.
I don't care too much for Valla, but I'm not going to give up Stargate just for one error. Even with Sony's huge error in downloading hidden files onto people's computers, I'll still watch Stargate. I just won't buy anything else from Sony.
As for Teal'c, he hasn't killed, maimed or intimidated anyone this year. Did you remove something else besides his snake?
Keep up the good work.
The writers might be behaving honourably by keeping Sam/Amanda but in so doing they aren't behaving honourably to the other actors, the Atlantis cast are being screwed over. So now Teyla isn't going to be needed and Sam is such a strong character Dr Weir will probably disappear into the odd line here and then and McKay, well we don't need him now we have the all knowing Sam in Atlantis and oh well why not just ship Col Sheppard back to earth so Sam can take over as military leader on Atlantis since she can't get to lead SG1. Atlantis fans are not happy with this move and we don't see why our show should be sacrificed to make one character from another show happy. Not all Atlantis fans are SG1/Sam fans. We don't like our show being messed with. With Sam on Atlantis it will be like two hours of SG1 instead of a seperate show. No room for Daniel this week okay ship him off to Atlantis after all he knows more than anyone about the ancients. There will be a backlash against Sam/Amanda if she comes over to Atlantis and that isn't fair to Amanda she doesn't deserve to be caught in the middle of this horrible mess.
Personally I don't like the idea of Carter on Atlantis (hate is too strong word here, definitely, at least for me), but I WANT VALA on SG-1 .... together with Carter.
And Jim, that was rude. You shut up.
Jim shuts up for no one, you tart. That was the point. This blog seems to be the only place where fans can honestly express how they're feeling. Yes, sometimes it crosses the line, but the fact remains that Joe and the gang are getting some honest feedback here, a lot of it. Whether or not some posts infringe on some people's delicacies or notions of decorum is even more irrelevant than the opinions being expressed.
Jim
Great, so now we learn that even some members of the Atlantis cast are feeling put out by this ridiculous crossover scheme. I don't want to see Teyla or anyone else pushed aside for any character, even one I like as much as Carter. Keep the two shows seperate, Joe. At least scrap this horrible idea. And why can't you guys write an SG-1 episode with Carter and Vala in it? The more we learn about this, the more unscrupulously concieved it sounds. Cripes, Joe, this is the actors themselves who are saying that they feel screwed over, not just us "nutty" fans. What are you guys thinking up there in Vancouver? And why can't you just admit that this is not going to be well recieved by fans of either show?
Jim,
If everyone can express an opinion, why can't Karen?
I would like to now how on earth everyone knows some of this stuff? Am I not looking in the right places? I grant you the fact that I am more than a bit slow, but WOW!
and would someone please explain why everyone gets so upset??? It is only a TELEVISION show!?!?
is it possible to see a split in the Asgard civilization ? So, we could experience an encouter with a faction from this secession : the vangard ! it also opens new reason to hear can't afford us hyperdrive engines and other stuff .
Wow, you're really not getting this are you? That is my point. Karen is perfectly entitled to express her opinion. She did a decent job of it too. I just didn't think much of it, so I expressed mine. Such is the way of these blog comments. Deal with it.
Jim
just a quick note in regards to the crossover ideas that are flying around. if its not broke dont "fix" it. Atlantis is great as is..great interaction between the charcters and its is its own entity. A crossover would only serve to upset the proverbial apple cart.
Hi Joe. I've enjoyed season 9 so far although I liked the first few episodes most because we had some mythology, action and adventure. I love action and adventure stories so some more of those please with the whole team. I liked how serious it got when Vala was burned, great contrast with the funny stuff. About the characters, Mitchell needs to be shown as leading SG-1, that's why he was put in command. Drop this co-lead crap. It doesn't work like that in the military and I'm sure your Air Force advisor can tell you that. Sure, Carter was named as leader when Jack was promoted but it was like squeezing a square peg into a round hole. Carter's strength is as a scientist not as a leader. Carter shines as a scientist. Making her team leader is like making Daniel team leader, that's not where their strengths lie. Why make a thoroughbred racehorse pull a cart when they could be jumping hurdles? Let Mitchell shine as a team leader, that's the role he's been given. He's not a brilliant scientist or expert on anything except being a fighter and a leader. I'm looking forward to seeing Vala again but she needs to be more serious and a team player if she's going to come back full time. Daniel needs to be more of an archeologist and linguist. I like how he and Teal'c have been the driving forces this year but Teal'c needs some stories that aren't about the jaffa. I did like how he was watching out to make sure Mitchell didn't get Daniel killed. Maybe pair him up with Daniel or Sam in a dangerous situation so we can be reminded what a great warrior he is and see his friendship with those two. I like what you're doing with Dr Lee, General Landry and Dr Lam. Roll on season 10!
Liz
This whole crossover plan sounds like a done deal already. Joe, can you please say something about it. Carter being removed from SG-1 and placed on Atlantis is about the sleaziest, most low down thing you could do. Amanda Tapping has been with this show since the beginning. You're treating her like crap. Same thing with the Atlantis cast. None of them are going to stand a chance with Carter around. She's way more qualified than they are. You people are without class.
Mitchell coulnd't lead a horse out of a barn. When Carter is with him he looks like the lame hack he is. That's why they're going to play the sexist card and send Carter to Atlantis. Precious little Mitch can't have any competition.
Please, don't push the SGA characters into the background when you bring Sam to Atlantis. I was never a big SG1 fan so she's not a big plus for me. I really love the Atlantis characters and don't want to have to have them give up screen time or development for Sam simply because you can't give her enough to do on SG1.
Thanks.
I'm just glad that there are finally some honest opinions about the shows coming out from the actors.
First, we have Michael Shanks possible departure, along with him telling the fans that Sony and TPTB don't consider the actors "vital" to the shows anymore.
Then, we have Amanda Tapping telling folks at a convention that she's being mistreated by the producers, and that the writers don't know what to do with Sam.
Now, Rachel Luttrell also makes known to fans that she's unsure of her own status in season three of Atlantis, in light of the bonehead crossover.
Add to that the dumbing down of stories and sexing up of the show since Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Greenburg left.
On a bit of a side note, James Tichenor is also leaving Atlantis after this year after seeming quite depressed about the show all year.
It seems like people are jumping ship left and right when it comes to these two shows. Sorry, Joe, but the company lines of "it's better than ever" and "the show is reinvigorated" are sounding more and more like the falsest of lies.
Yeah, now I'm just waiting for Rachel Luttrell to issue some sort of statement proclaiming that she was "misinterpreted" at the convention, and that she thinks the character direction of Teyla is perfect, and that she's ecstatic about the direction these brilliant writers and producers are taking Atlantis. You know, sort of like the crap retraction that Amanda Tapping seems to have been forced put out after she dared to let the truth be known. Joe, did any of you guys ever work for North Korea?
Have to agree with the "don't dump Sam into Atlantis" group. And yes, I know it's just a TV show, but honestly, SG1 ceased to be fun for me about two seasons ago, and SGA has a whole new universe, new actors, new characters with new conflicts, and it really doesn't need someone from elsewhere shipped in, no matter who it is.
Might not hurt to get a female writer on staff for a couple of episodes, maybe someone a hair older than, say, thirty, who has had some life experience and knows how women behave with each other in real life. Or, at least, get the writers you have to listen to their wives.
I know you're "fighting City Hall" when it comes to this sort of thing, but it's something that shouldn't get too rooted in the higher ups' minds. Isn't the problem with writing for an ensemble (which is what I fondly hope SGA is) keeping all the characters in play? Throw in another, a heavyweight with 10 years development, and who do you think the writers will latch on to? Who will be easiest for them to write for?
Atlantis has such a big cast that you haven't been able to develop any of the characters yet, barring Mckay. You've given us nothing about anyone else, even the two leads--Shep and Weir. The poster above is rigth. Carter will be too inviting of a character to write for. Bringing her to Atlatis is a bad idea. Bad for everyone on both shows.
Mac
I want to make it clear that some people here do not speak for everyone.
I think it is amazing that a show can engender such feeling and passion, but that doesn't mean any one persons opinion is more important then anothers. People don't like Sam, people don't like Daniel, people don't like Teal'c - alot of people appear not to like Mitchell (I say appear, because for all I know it is the same person posting multiple times. Down side of Anonymous postings). So? Does that mean we should get rid of those characters to make the 'masses' happy?
Some characters are getting underused, some overused, some shouldn't be used at all. Much speculation is happening over the forth coming seasons of Atlantis and SG-1, but the ink has yet to dry and there is no info being released on contracts yet - so we really don't know.
It seems that Sony is not pegging the success of the show on any individual actor. This makes contract negotiations interesting, but it doesn't mean that they don't want the actors back. It's a negotiation technique. Wait and find out what is happening.
We don't know what if any role Carter will play in Atlantis as yet, so complaining about how she is going to mess up the show is a little premature.
I am just suggesting that prehaps we should speak for ourselves here. Maybe act with a little dignity and not flame actors and other people who post, and respect that we all have a right to our opinions. But there is no reason to get nasty.
Everyone is waiting to see what is going to happen next season, ourselves included. Although to be honest I want to find out what happens at the end of the current season first. I think Atlantis is a fantastic show and I enjoy watching, as for SG-1 I personally enjoy the new dynamic and am really looking forward to where this will lead us. And I think the Ori are an interesting bad guy. I want to know more.
And for those I hate Vala people out there. Remember, if she returns she has spent a long time with the Priors - do you really believe she will return untouched and as the same person? Think about that for a moment. Perhaps consider also the fact the she is signing on for a reacuring role, not a regular.
There are many possibilities here is a sea of infante probabilitlies. Let us not put the cart before the horse and give the PTB a chance? Or maybe as I said earlier, just speak for yourself. Because remember for every fan that posts here, there is at least 100 fans that don't. No one persons opinion is gosbal.
If the writers can't write Sam and Vala on SG1 what hope have the female characters on Atlantis got. Dr Weir and Teyla will have to make way for Sam because the writers want to give her a big part and of course McKay is so easy to write it will become the Sam/McKay show. After all recently they only seem to be able to write Sam in a relationship and we all know McKay idolises her. So instead of Sam/Jack ship on SG1 we are going to have Sam/McKay ship on Atlantis.
I wish you would put to rest some of these rumours Joe but I don't think you will because it's keeping the interest in the show until the second half of the season starts unfortunately it's all pretty negative so far which isn't good.
joe can't put to rest rumors becasue most of them are probably true. its a real shame though becasue no one seems to like them much but there doing them anyway. and i don't think everyone on here is just a few people posting lots, i've been reading the stargate forums all over and not many folk are happy about sam on atlantis or vala as a regular or super crossovers. only the daniel fans are happy about vala but not all, even some of them are not looking forward to her baby.
Do I have a problem with people expressing their opinions/concerns about the show they watch and love? No. Never.
Do I have a problem with people being nasty, vicious, slanderous, libellous, actively dishonest or naively disingenuous when expressing said opinions/concerns or in expressing the reactions to the opinions of others? You betcha.
Do I despise the people who viciously and wickedly denigrate Joe Mallozzi, the other producers, the actors they don't like or anyone else who dares to disagree with them or question their validity?
Big time.
A politely expressed opinion is one thing. The muck-raking and bomb-throwing and pure mean spiritedness of much 'conversation' here is disheartening.
And I say again: Not one poster here has proprietary rights over either show just because they're a fan and turn on the television. If you want a show that pleases you in all respects, by all means go out and create it, sell it to a network and be responsible for its ongoing life and success.
Until then, either express yourselves politely and respectfully to the people who shoulder the burden of show running, or go away. Hiding behind the internet to say things you'd never have the guts to say in person is low.
Do I agree with every decision the producers have made? No. Do I think the show hasn't always lived up to its potential, or the promise exhibited in the first 4 seasons? No. Am I less passionately devoted to SG1 than I used to be? Yes. Do I have the right to demand that Malozzi or anyone else 'fix' the show in order to address my concerns? No. They make the show they want to make. And my choice is to watch, or not watch.
Fans have gotten way too big for their boots. I think it's unfortunate that some actors have started airing their concerns in public to fans, because that just feeds into the delusion that fans can, or should, have any say in how a show is run.
There's a fine line between fan support and fan dictatorship. And I think too many people have crossed over it to the wrong side. And if you think that by heaping personal abuse on Joe Malozzi or anyone else you're going to advance your agenda, you're nuts.
I don't support all the decisions the showrunners of SG1 have made. I absolutely support their right to make those decisions free of abuse and harassment and vitriol.
Karen
Hey Joe
I know this is just a tv show but I have invested a decade on this show. And it virtually the only two I watch anymore. So I thought I chip in.
I am going to have to jump on the bandwagon of not wanting Carter in Atlantis. If TPTB want to do something with her character than write better material. Team her up with Vala I think the two of them would be great. But it seems to me TPTB are scared of having two strong women in one show.
So where does that leave Teyla and Weir? If you bring Sam to SGA well since you couldn't have two strong women on SG1 you certainly can't have three on SGA. So that mean the odds of both Teyla and
Weirs screen time getting cut are really good.
And since the writers can't seem to be able to write Sam without a man in her life that means just as we got rid of the Jack/Sam crap we will now have the Sam/Rodney show.
Which means more screen time for that couple and less for the secondary characters such as Sheppard, Beckett, Zalenka and Ronan. Just like it happened in SG1. TPTB built up the Jack/Sam and Daniel and Teal'c got less screen time and almost became secondary characters.
(yeah sarcasm much but mostly true unfortunately)
And why do you have to keep building up her character? She has had more story lines and background then the rest of the cast put together. In the last 2 season she has had more lead episodes than anyone else.
Sam is supposed to be a soldier so why don't you for at least one season actually act like one.
I loved Sam in the first 4 seasons of the show and then the Jack/Sam ship started and then she became either Teflon coated SuperSam. She could do nothing wrong and always saved the day after Daniel gave her the ideas which he never got credited or she would be an emotional mess. Yuck.
Putting her on Atlantis would be a mistake. And just another lie to the fans when it was said little to no crossover between the shows.
And I'll lay odds that the ratings will go down every time she is on Atlantis.
I know I won't watch it with her on even though I have become a rabid fan of the show.
By the way I love the team dynamics as they are. Like Mitchell, Daniel and Vala are scream. I love Sam Daniel T and Mitchell as SG1. Despise the whole ORI storyline and can not not not not wait til it is done.
daneffew
I would just like to start by saying that I absolutely love SGA, and loved SG1.
However, I don't think the two should cross over for more than an episode or two.
SG1 has had 9 seasons to become who they are, for fans to fall in love with the characters, and for those characters to grow.
If you put Tapping on SGA in a regular role, then you lose everything that makes SGA special.
Tapping is a wonderful actress, and I liked Sam for the first 5 seasons or so. Then I stopped watching becuase I was tired of a lot of the plot lines. I would really hate to see SGA go the same way.
The show is about a group of characters finding their own way in a very foriegn and scary world. If you add Tapping to the mix on a regular basis, then it is no longer about the relationships and characters we are coming to care for. It is about Carter, and how she relates to everyone.
With all due respect, please keep SGA its own character, without adding SG1 to the mix. Let us fall in love with these characters, as we did with the first show, on our own.
Thanks!
Look, Karen, I'm glad you're expressing your opinion on the matter. Really, I am. But quit trying to impose your own sense of decorum on everyone else. For the most part, I agree with you. But no matter how ardently you believe what you say is right, it's still just your opinion. And it's not your place or anyone else's to demand that others change the way they want to respond to suit your tastes. Frankly, I think Joe and the other producers who read these comments probably do respond more to some of the "abuse, harrassment, and vitriol" than to the sweet, sugar-coated comments. Right now, TPTB can't help but be aware that their is a tremendous amount of anger, disappointment, and sadness over most of the recent decisions regarding both SG-1 and Atlantis. And it is probably what you consider to be inappropriate posts that most succinctly and accurately convey the sentiments of a large number of people.
Aside from all that, Joe is usually even ruder and certainly more condescending than the majority of posters here. He purposefully baits fans for his own entertainment, playing on their concerns and then rubbing it in their faces that things will not be getting better. The least the fans can do is return the favor. If Joe is going to act like an immature child, then I say that he's going to get what he deserves.

my work is done. ;)
sally :)
ps - i'm sorry atlantis fans.
Karen - congrats I agree with most of what you said... The only thing is I am personally still as invested in SG-1 as I was back in season 4, actually I am more so :).
The thing is, I want it to be clear. We each have an opinion yes, but this is not Imagingate where everything one person wants to happen comes true. It's Stargate where they are writing for a damned site more people then post on this blog, or on this website. So to propose that any one opinion on this blog is somehow more important is amusing and wrong.
People, if the show is as bad as you say it is - why are you still invested? Why are you still watching? That is your choice, your power lies with the remote control. If you don't like something change the channel. But I know, even from a recent convention or 2 that people are enjoying where Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis are going, and I have like to have faith that they can pull off a good show. Does that make me niave? Maybe, but let's be honest here. Did any of us write, direct, produce or act in this show? If the answer is no, the simple fact is we have no creative imput and we never did. Our task is to watch, theirs is to create. Stop trying to overstep boundries. This is not to say you cannot express your concerns. But be people about it, act like adults and address it rationally. And understand in the end, the only contol you have is in the power of your remote.
The PTB are not perfect, they don't have a 100% strike rate... But who would expect them to? I just don't understand these personal barbs that are being thrown about. Attack a story, a character whatever - but never the person behind it. Because you are doing a disservice not only to yourself, but to the cast and crew as a whole. No one man is responsible, remember that.

yeah, let the PILOT lead the team. don't let the person that's been training for *this position* for 8 years as second in command be leader.
sally :)
You know what it is? I'm pretty much game for whatever storyline you want to do for the two shows. Really, I am. The Ori? I'm loving it. The Wraith? They're ok, a bit weak as far as villain go, but I'm willing to see where you take it. But the idea of slamming both shows together and making it all one great big story is totally repulsive to me. So, for as much of a Carter fan as I am, and for as much of a Teyla/Weir fan as I am, it's not that you're planning on slighting any of them that's most disturbing to me. It's the idea of such a massive crossover storywise. I think it's poorly concieved, and judging from recent experience, bound to be even more poorly executed.
Joe,
At this point, most people seem to hate the idea of Carter crossing to Atlantis already. Do you really think that they'll change their minds and love it when it actually happens? As cool as your crossover idea may be, I think that no matter what, people are going to hate it. Can't these plans be changed before next season?
Joe,
Since you feel it is necessary to keep Mitchell and have Vala, please send Vala to Atlantis as someone else suggested, and get back to what made SG-1 great-- a real team with a sense of purpose and a serious undertone. Maybe Vala would be much more accepted by the Atlantis fans than she is by the SG-1 fans. Or maybe Mitchell should go to Atlantis? These characters aren't that well developed yet, so may not impinge on the SGA characters as much as the well established characters of Sam, Daniel, and Teal'c.
Coming from a very invested Atlantis fan (hey, I'm here aren't I)...please, please don't ship Sam over into a major (even perhaps a tenth above a minor) role in Atlantis.
Those of us who tuned in to watch Atlantis did so giving the cast, the show, the actors, the writers - well, you get the point - we gave it a god...and we LIKED it (again see reference to the fact that I'm here).
I'm an SG-1 fan (again, point to the 'here' comments), and I've enjoyed most of season 9. I like Carter. I like Mitchell. I like Vala.
Hell, I'm not hard to please - but Sam moving to Atlantis cast, even if it's ten episodes, it's still nine too many.
I want to see more Sheppard, Weir, Teyla, Ronon, McKay, Beckett and then the not so common cast members Caldwell and Zelenka.
If Sam's character comes over, you going to put McKay, Zelenka and Sam in the dialogue and see just how fine can you split an atom?
Sam's a Lieutenant Colonel that technically outranks Sheppard - that would displace his command, and what is unique with him.
His backstory? The city and his super impressive "I'm more Ancient than you" gene that got him there in the first place...more, (if I beg will that be too embarassing)?
Atlantis works. It's got huge potential. It doesn't need to be changed up, or have so many characters for the writer's to cope with that things get mired in the muck.
(Okay, seriously, will begging help? Cause, I'm not above begging - really)
I'd sign my name, but I go by so many that I wouldn't recognize myself if I did that...awwww hell, at least someone is bound to call me something - IWantToBelieve aka Kodiak Bear Country aka Talby Bear aka DESPERATE ATLANTIS FAN (nudge nudge - get the last part - maybe not so much desperate as...well, begging...maybe that is desperate...yeah, I guess that fits desperate, okay, so I'm DESPERATE)
Hey guys (and... Joe),
I just wanted to address the whole "Tapping" versus "Carter" issue, as it's come up a lot over the past 15 posts or so.
I know it's basically a word game and some may think this is petty, but they really aren't the same people.
When you place blame and you say "Tapping," it looks like you're blaming Tapping instead of Carter.
Carter, the character who's created/developed by the writers (and whose fate is determined by the Powers on High), is the one who will be focused on instead of Weir, Teyla, Shep and Beckett.
Tapping, the actress who does her job by acting, and who most likely has NO desire to usurp the other actors' positions (or upstage them, so to speak), is the one who will inevitably bear the brunt of fans lashing out in the not-so-distant future, which is why I'm bringing it up now.
While I obviously understand that Tapping is playing Carter, this is essentially a writing issue that you guys are wisely foreseeing and predicting. And ultimately that can be traced back to the writers, or my favorite choice: Sony/SciFi. ;)
Again, I'm sure this sounds kinda petty to a lot of you, but it's just like blaming Claudia Black for Vala's constant (lame) sexual innuendo; or Rachel Luttrell for Teyla's wardrobe (or lack thereof); or Torri Higginson for Elizabeth's "wishy-washy" behavior.
All of it - sometimes down to the blink of an eye - is a collection of creative decisions made by TPTB. Not the actors.
:)

To recap, I said:
"I don't support all the decisions the showrunners of SG1 have made. I absolutely support their right to make those decisions free of abuse and harassment and vitriol."
And Jim, if I understand you correctly, you feel that abuse, harrassment and vitriol are perfectly acceptable methods for one human to communicate with another, just because you don't agree with them.
Well. I find that sad. And even sadder is the fact that you have to attack me because I state that respectful disagreement is more desirable than abuse. At least you're living up to your standards of personal behaviour.
Good luck with your chosen method of convincing Mr Malozzi, or anyone else, of what you'd like to see on the show.

Joe,
Since you feel it is necessary to keep Mitchell and have Vala, please send Vala to Atlantis as someone else suggested, and get back to what made SG-1 great-- a real team with a sense of purpose and a serious undertone.
Carter is a scientist. She fits in Atlantis. Even Mitchell would fit there, so you can send him there, too.
Don't separate Vala and Daniel, these two TOGETHER are simply magical and the greatest joy to watch.
Carter's always been written and performed as a team player. It's a prominent side of the character, thanks to the writing and Tapping's acting. So I see no dangers in keeping her in either SG1 or placing her in Atlantis; she'd interact especially well with Weir, Teyla and Mackay (not sure how she'd get on with Sheppard). I also think there could be some great Carter Vala scenes if these two were thrown together.
please send Vala to Atlantis
They won't do that. you know why? It's the main reason that Claudia was hired (and no disrespect meant to her talent because she is)
she was hired for the same reason ben was hired....FARSCAPE
to the minds of sony, scapers are so massively desperate to see their favored actors that they won't care if they play different characters. Claudia is there to play off ben, even if they rarely have a scene together, becuase sony/mgm/scifi believes that the scapers will blindly watch hoping for that tiny crumb of john/aeryn that they might get.
the scapers are getting played and used, probably in a hope that they will make up for the RDA fans who have bailed on the show.
That's why the long standing actors will get shafted to 'protect' ben and claudia. scifi/mgm/sony loves them and will do - probably - about anything to keep them and will apply as much pressure as they can to tweak teh show to become more and more Scapy
Shanks, Amanda, Chris, they're all optional now. Sony doesn't care about them.
The show is now starFARgateSCAPE,
I just wanted to add my voice to the group of Atlantis fans that are not at all happy with the idea of Sam Carter being on SGA half the season.
I have been an avid SG1 fan since the beginning, but the last season or so haven't grabbed my attention and my imagination quite as much as they used to (though I definitely enjoyed the Daniel/Vala show this year).
SGA, on the other hand, continues to thrill me with its characters, its snark, and even its plots (though there's plenty of recycling going on there too). I would be _very_ disappointed to have the growing dynamic of that show and its milieu disrupted at this point. I know it's your (collective) show, and I am sure you think you are capable of handling this change effectively, but I have serious doubts that the new mix would feel the same as the show I've grown to love.
Simply based on character type, I can't see how it would work. As others have noted, we already have more than enough technobabble experts on SGA with McKay and Zelenka, reducing the need for Carter as exposition driver. We already have more than enough military presence with Sheppard and Caldwell and Lorne, reducing the need for Carter as military strategist or team leader. We already have two woefully underdeveloped female leads in Teyla and Elizabeth, reducing the need for Carter as the 'female perspective' on anything. And although there's no part of Carter's character than overlaps with Beckett, we don't want to slow down his character development either.
I think the most disappointing part of this is the writers/producers going back on their 'word' to the fans. They said at the start that they wanted to keep SGA separate, allow it to develop its own personality, history, conventions, etc. I completely agree with that sentiment still - why don't you?
- Linda aka Melibabe
Yes, Joseph, I am yet another fan who doesn't want to see Carter or anyone else from SG-1 crossing over to Atlantis. As others have said here, Carter is a more qualified scientist than Mckay, she definitly outranks Sheppard, and so far just about everyone pushes Weir around already, so I doubt Carter will have any difficulty in that department. Sam Carter is a terrific character--for SG-1. She doesn't overshadow Daniel and Teal'c. But she will overshadow the Atlantis characters. Whether you think of the characters that way or not, that is the way many, many fans see it. She's simply accopmlished too much, been through too much, and been a major player for so long that no one on Atlantis will stand a chance. It will look unnatural if you write it otherwise. And you know it. So, in order to avoid pushing Weir and that funny looking half-naked woman even further into the background than they are now, please, skip the crazy crossover. Oh, and please no more ship crap with Carter and Mckay. I'm already dreading Rodney's descent into puerile fantasies this season. I don't need to see it play out "for real" next year.
Oh God! Joe, get some new ideas. The Carter/Mckay dynamic is a dried up well of once productive character interaction. Now, it's just another ignominous cliche used to lazily make it through episodes with some dirt cheap humor that everyone has had more than their fill of.
This might get lost in the hundred of comments you'll get.
I won't insult, rant or whine about anything that has been said or done. I will just say this; don't forget about the angry Atlantis fans.
Because from all the comments I've read and your blog it seems that TPTB (aka your group) is only looking out for the Sg1 fans. I may watch both shows, but please aknowledge that there's a bunch of people out there who are fans only of SGA. And doing the major crossover could affect the show and the precious ratings that keeps the show on the air and you with a job.
Belisse
Belisse,
How do you figure this major crossover signifies only looking out for the SG-1 fans? How is this good for SG-1 fans? So we can have more Vala and Mitchell? To many, this is not a good thing.
Mitchell and Vala are the problem here. Mitchell can only look good if Carter isn't around too much, and didn't you get your memo that having two good female characters on the same show is impossible? And look at Teyla and Weir -- extremely underdeveloped female characters.
Dear anonymous,
I believe the implication Belisse was making was that all the arguments given to date (by Mr. Mallozzi principally) focus on satisfying the needs of an existing SG1 character and appeasing the SG1 fans.
[quote]So what if, rather than having Carter play the supporting role in a particular SG-1 episode, she were to, instead, play a more decisive role in an Atlantis story? We're not talking about minimizing Carter, but quite literally making the most of her character across two universes (and I dont' mean that literally). In fact, fans of the character would actually be getting more front-and-center Carter, not less. [/quote]
There has been no discussion on what impact (and most of us feel it will be negative) TPTB think that could or should have on the existing SGA characters and their interactions/dynamics.
In other words, let's hear a bit from them about how much this idea is going to improve SGA. Because many SGA fans are not buying it right now.
- Linda
Atlantis is a wonderful show with a very talented cast and it's just starting to develop. Having Sam on that would ruin this dynamic. Atlantis fans were told by TPTB that Atlantis would be allowed to develop on its own with little if any crossovers. Now we are being told that there will not only be major crossovers but Sam could be on Atlantis up to 10 eps thats half a season when the other characters will be pushed aside to make way for her. Please don't do this, allow Atlantis to continue to grow, it has it's own fanbase we aren't all SG1 fans some of us actually love the show because of it's different from SG1. I recently went to my first convention because of my love of Atlantis even though I watched SG1 for the first 7 seasons I never even wanted to attend a con before. It's not a clone we have some wonderful characters on that show ones we want to continue to see develop and please don't go all shippy on us with Sam/Mckay. McKay has grown and developed wonderfully since he's been on Atlantis and I really enjoy the snarky comments between him and Sheppard. Atlantis is a pleasure to watch I always feel entertained after watching it and I look forward to seeing it each ep and I will be collecting all the DVD's and books associated with it and will probably go to more Cons because of my love for that show. Please keep it seperate. Right now it just looks like you are trying to keep the SG1/Sam fans happy but please Sam belongs on SG1 not Atlantis.
To be honest with you, I have not really cared for SGA, but having Sam on there on occasion would really help the show, IMO. I don't mean for her to dominate, but I think it would be refreshing for the show. The SGA characters are not really grabbing me at all, but I would consider watching SGA if Sam were on the show, every so often.
Right now, we have no idea how much Sam will be on SGA. We have only to go on JM's vague statement that, Sam, for the most part, will be firmly rooted in SG-1.
Though a huge Atlantis fan I have been slightly worried about the course of season 2. Though I have enjoyed the episodes it is starting to feel like the show is all about Rodney and Sheppard. Don't get me wrong I LOVE the characters, but what about the rest of the cast? Where is their development? I know many have spoken before of the seeming lack of development of the female characters and I must agree. Now, we heard Sam is going to be on Atlantis for half a season! Surely you guys should be proud of the wonderful new characters you have created and wish to expand on them, not throw in old characters (Sam is a great character, but one that has had 10 years of development!) Make room for the new...
Belisse,
I get where you're coming from, but I have to disagree with the assessment that this whole crossover is only looking out for SG-1. I'm an SG-1 fan who occasionally watches Atlantis. And I'm absolutely not buying that this is going to be good for Sam Carter, SG-1, or and of the Atlantis cast members. Carter's storylines and position on SG-1 have been usurped and given away in order to facilitate the Cameron Mitchell character. Now, it looks like they're trying to remove any ties Carter may have left and give them to Vala. Whether or not TPTB intended for it to be this way or not isn't an issue; this is the way that it is. It seems that many of the actors are feeling very unappreciated right now. Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks have both expressed reservations about their characters' directions and about resigning. It's patently obvious that Torri Higginson and Rachel Luttrell are totally ignored when it comes to writing Atlantis episodes. I know a lot of people like Mckay, but he is the only character that the writers seem interested in writing for. What about Paul McGullion? He's been in, what, 3 episodes so far?
If Carter is pushed to Atlantis then her already marginalized role on SG-1 will be further reduced. On Atlantis, Weir and Teyla are sure to lose out in order to facilitate Carter. Likewise, Carter is already a more experienced, established soldier than Sheppard, and she is a more experienced scientist than Mckay.
I don't see how any of this will be good for any of the parties involved.
It does seem like the PTB only care about SG-1, doesn't it? When Joe made his remarks, they largly focused on appealling the SG-1 fanbase and totally ignored Atlantis fans. Why?
The cast is solid, as is. Yes, some need more development (how 'bout some stories for the *ladies* of SGA, Joe?), but still, the cast is pretty solid. I like everyone, and I want them to have more screentime. Not less. Bringing in Carter just smacks of the opposite.
HI Joe ,
I guess you could say Im a recent 'convert' to sg1 and atlantis (even though atlantis is yet to screen in little ole NZ!) its great having friends overseas....and meeting the odd guest at a scifi convention will convert you in no time at all..:)
I must admit I have a penchant for bad guys, so please, please, please.... can we see more of Ba'al on the next SG1 series. (i know, i know, hes not a main character before I get shot down from every direction)
Im guessing that if you are already at the contract stage that the scripts are already prewritten so there is little chance of him getting more screentime, but i for one would love to see more of him or even bring him onto atlantis would be great as although again i am guessing this is unlikely.
Also any chance youll ever use NZ to shoot some of the series, it seems like more and more people are coming here to shoot work and our range of locations could lend itself to some new storylines/worlds ( ask Rainbow , cliff , and Torri how nice it is here...)
kindest regards
Mr. Mallozzi,
I didn't have the energy (or time) to slog through the replies to your current post -- but since the last set established new standards for rudeness I'm not really motivated to do so.
I'm neutral on Teal'c -- I want him to have lines, but frankly, the Jaffa story bores me and I find myself thankful it isn't getting much screen time. I respect the producers for trying to complete the storyline though -- in a kind of abstract way. So kudos.
I normally hang around at Our Stargate, so there isn't much opportunity to interact with you, and having experienced the horrors of an unmoderated list, I doubt I'll be back here often, but on the off chance you see this:
Thank you -- on the whole I'm enjoying Season 9 SG-1 immensely and wanted to express my appreciation.
I love what you've done with the SG-1 Team. I find the Ori a worthy (and scary) adversary and I'm looking forward to the second half of season 9 and also to Season 10. So please keep up the good work.

It's not that TPTB care more about SG1 or the SG1 Fans. Many SG1 fans are just more vocal and more aggressive than SGA fans. We complain a lot more (and frankly, we have more right now to complain about), and thus TPTB feel they have to put out more flames in regards to SG1. With the exception of the crossover idea, SGA fans seem relative happy with Season 2 and the possibility of Season 3. Probably b/c SGA is doing well and is staying true to its original premise. SG1 has been completely renovated and many do not like the direction it is heading in. But I agree with many of the SGA fans - SGA has enough characters and does not need Carter. SG1, however, does. Without Sam Carter's presence for half of the season, SG1 will be just a hollow shell of its former self.
Maddy says:
For my money, the weakest element of both SG1 and SGA is the female characters. And until such time as the production teams cease to be a boys' club, and they actively recruit women writers and directors, that won't change and the jock's locker room atmosphere will continue. Given the strong female presence in other tv dramas, as writers, directors and producers, to say that women aren't available for these positions is patently ludicrous. For some reason there is a bias against women in the world of Stargate that isn't evident in other SF shows like Babylon 5 and Star Trek. Arguing that women don't get SF is a joke. With Stargate there is an active culture against the participation of women in power positions, and the consistently poor development of the female characters suggests that the producers don't want that culture to change. The fact that AT had to threaten to leave before being given the chance to direct (see her comments on the Season 8 dvd set) when MS got shown the director's red carpet, and CJ was allowed to write more than one episode, further emphasises the innate bias of the production team.
On the other hand, the level of hostility aimed at AT because Sam's life was opened up to show she is more than a walking technobabble producer suggests there are fans out there who don't care for women characters either -- especially when they interfere with their deranged slash fantasies.
Or is it because the only other option presented to Sam was to be a love interest? Is that the reason for the anti-Sam feeling out in fandom?
Stargate's innate sexism is well-documented: Tok'ra Barbie has been the worst example. But why is it continuing? Why do the fans not clamour for a more realistic portrayal of the women as complex, complete and fascinating people in their own right, rather than just foils for the dashing heroes?
And even if they did complain, would it matter? Are we only dealing with a bunch of guys making a tv show using these characters as alter-egos for them to have the adventures, get the girls, and offer them a vicariously more exciting life?
Your call.
Yeah, what the poster above said. Cheers.

I don't watch Atlantis either. I would give it a chance if Carter was on. She's a wonderful character that I enjoy greatly. Who knows how many SG-1 fans will come over to Atlantis because of Carter being around?

Yes, I agree that Carter on Atlantis is likely to draw in new fans. But that is the only reason to do this crossover. It is a blatant attempt to suck in new fans. It helps Atlantis ratings-wise. But it will also hurt the show in the long run. Carter on Atlantis will weaken the established cast, and it will reinforce how eminently more qualified and experienced Carter (and Daniel, Teal'c, and O'neil by proxy) are compared to the Atlantis expedition members. Also, such a massive story crossover will only serve to make Atlantis even more reliant on SG-1 than it already is. I suspect that one of the main reasons that SG-1 continues is because the producers feel that Atlantis needs the support that SG-1 brings. Without that crutch, I don't think that anyone is confident that Atlantis will thrive. So, although using SG-1 to prop up Atlantis in the beginning of season 3 will probably lead to increased ratings, it will ultimately make Atlantis even more likely to sink when SG-1 does go off the air.
This crossover just doesn't work, for either show. It sounds forced, it sounds like the actors are already trying to distance themselves from it, and it probably should never happen.
reading through here it strikes me that some people in this really love sticking behind the anonymity that the internet provides
I don't agree I think Atlantis is more than capable of surviving on it's own. It has it's own set of fans. Not all of us are SG1/Sam fans we love the show because it's different and it's not SG1 so yeah putting Sam on Atlantis might bring some Sam fans over but they will also loose some Atlantis fans because they don't want Sam on the show. We love the characters we already have on there. Many of us left SG1 because we didn't like the direction it was going in others have never even seen SG1 and are new to the whole fandom so don't lump us all in with SG1. Atlantis doesn't need SG1 to survive it needs to be allowed to develop on its own. Atlantis isn't a team show we don't have four team members going off to fight the bad guys each week. We have stories about the main characters and of course other aliens but we also have stories based in the City of Atlantis and for the whole of the first season they were on their own cut off from earth they couldn't go back they had to build a community and they did that. It's a whole different concept apart from the stargate and it's doing well and rating just as well as SG1.
i think SG1 has run it's course. it was a good run, but it's just time to wrap up, IMHO. i dont think bringing in that sleazy pair from farscape did much to help, especially the whore. granted she plays a great whore, but it's just disgusting what that kind of character does to the show's traditional image.
it's just a chemistry thing i guess, the original team had it right and it worked quite well. now it's like a bunch of misfits with no direction and continuity whatsoever. then to top it off Bridges character seems about as insignificant as they come, which certainly isn't a good thing for someone supposed to be running the show.
You want to know what amuses me - we see Teal'c, Jack, Daniel whatever manner of male without a shirt, with a tank top whatever, no one (or very few someones) make a comment about it being sexual - about sexism or whatever. Women wear tank tops, or leather whatevers it is suddenly all about sex? Hmm, they are either both bad, or neither - you can't have it any other way.
Although, I did right this with one question. Where on the DVD's does Amanda mention that she threatened to quit (which is a tried and true meathod for both male and female actors/producers whatever to get what they want) so she could direct?
And are you sure a similar threat wasn't issued by Michael when he wanted to direct, or Chris for writing?
That's all. I am no longer bothering with arguing about the validity of the show, because people are detirmined to be rude and dogmatic about it. That is a valid choice I know, but I ain't buying into it...
hello,
I'm a big SGA fan, and I really don't think that it would be good to have Carter in the show. To see "old" characters come into SGA kind of defeat the purpose of the spin off, doesn't it? I am a former SG1 fan but I became weary of it so I turned to SGA in order to see some new faces... I really don't want to have to watch Carter in ATlantis, she's a nice character but really, give a chance to the SGA cast!!!
I think many SGA fans feel the same and are quite happy with the show as it is!
Like Lillith I'm a former SG1 fan and I love all the new faces on Atlantis. We don't need Carter on the show. Please give the SGA cast a chance to grow and develop they are doing a good job. I know many SGA fans feel the same, please leave the show alone. It can stand on it's own merits and deserves a chance.
Atlantis does deserve a chance to sink or swim on its own. But I think if this major crossover goes through, then Atlantis will be doomed to forever be looked at as SG-1's little brother. At the San Jose convention, Don Davis talked about SG-1 maybe going on for a few more seasons. If that happens, then Atlantis will never, ever be able to stand on its own. SG-1 already casts such a huge shadow that bringing Carter or Daniel to Atlantis will just make Atlantis look like a less capable, totally dependent series.

I'll take the negatives and "horrors" of an unmoderated lists anyday over a fully moderate one. I lurked at OS for many, many months because I really like Daniel and enjoyed the emphasis on the character there
After many months of lurking, I finally got up the nerve to respond to a thread topic, generally that in the certain episode being discussed, I found Daniel's behavior to be less than admirable and was very bothered by it; contrary to what most of the others had posted. My post(s) never saw the light of day.
Apparently, if one is a Daniel fan, it's not acceptable there to say that, on occasion, Daniel (like everyone else) can be be a real jerk. Critical opinions on Daniel just don't seem to be allowed there, unlike the critical opinions of almost every other character which ARE allowed there.
I can certainly understand wanting a "safe" place to discuss one's favorite character, safe from "trolls" and other evil doers who just want to trash one's favorite character, but stifling/preventing anyone from saying anything critical of Daniel's behavior is very narrow-minded. Our Stargate -- All the team, all the time is really false advertising. It should be Our Stargate -- All Daniel, all the time.
I adore Daniel; he's still my favorite character. I just don't think he's above criticism and neither he nor his actor should be put on any kind of pedestal.
Yeah, as messy as it is, I'll take free speech anyday.
Lizzie
Well, Lizzie, I hope you feel better for getting that off your chest.
Many people have had a tough time at one board or the other. I, myself, left GW for a while due to some really nasty militant shippers most of whom are not there anymore, thank goodness.
Then there's this one mod there who rags on Daniel, Michael Shanks and Daniel fans at every opportunity so, you know, bias is everywhere. You just have to find a place where you are comfortable.
You just have to find a place where you are comfortable.
yep, and since Our Stargate is
all daniel all the time and the home of the biggest sam bashers in the world, it definitely isn't a place for anyone who happens to like any other character than thier much vaunted 'saint Daniel'
is GW perfect? Heck no. but at least it's not censored and 'moderated' to the point of cultism
Hey Joe,
I just read your answers over at the Solutions forum and want to comment on your perspective about Carter's potential, but "not yet written in stone" crossover. I don't think anyone here is concerned with her (and apparently Daniel) doing a one episode guest spot on Atlantis. In your response you said that you didn't see the cause for worry. You also compared Sam's potential appearances with those of Mitch Pileggi. Well, that is the cause for concern.
Firstly, if you're implying that Sam will be making several appearances, as Pileggi has done, that is a cause for concern and goes way, way beyond the idea of just a guest spot. That turns her into a full-blown recurring Atlantis character. There are a number of Atlantis fans who feel that his character is a large part of why so many others on the Atlantis cast are without development. Sure, maybe some will say that he's been a great addition. But they would also agree that his development and presence has decreased the involvement of both Teyla and Dr. Weir in Atlantis stories and in the resolution of stories in particular. If Sam becomes a simliar type character to Caldwell fans are concerned that it will mean even less time for the established cast, which is something no one wants to see.
Secondly, SG1 fans really would not be happy with Sam's level of involvement in Atlantis being on a similar level to Caldwell's. If Sam goes to Atlantis to, as you say, "make the most of her character", then how does reducing her role to a similar one to Caldwell's maximize her potential? At best Caldwell is a peripheral player in the Atlantis scene, always there but not necessarily involved with the action. SG1 fans are not looking forward to the prospect of her being so marginalized. If making the most of Sam's character to you is savagely curtailing her role in Atlantis stories (as you claim to have done to her in SG1 season nine), then I would hate to see how you minimize a characters potential. Perhaps Rainbow saw that one first hand, eh?
Anyway, your continuing to claim that you "dont see it" when talking about fan's concern with the crossover idea, and your continuing to dismiss those concerns so blithely offers little reassurance that things aren't completely going awry up there at Bridge. Throw in many fans general apathy towards the changes for season nine, many fans distaste for any one or all of the new characters, the concerns expressed by Amanda Tapping, the concerns expressed by Rachel Luttrel, the uncertainty being expressed by Michael Shanks about his return and his comments about how the studio devalues the actors, and it becomes pretty understandable why fans are so concerned.
You've all always professed that Stargate was one big family. That is soooo NOT the vibe we're all getting anymore. Hence our concern.
Edwin Sauders

For all your complaints about spoilers, you end up posting your blog a month early. I think someone's been playing with near misses on a neutron star, or has been borrowing a certain mysterious puddle jumper. What does that do to causality, when you jump ahead and read your own blog. It would help budgeting, but could lead to a stuffy creative meeting......"OK, everyone, here are your ideas from next week, let toss them around and see what we did with them....."
OK: Your PC date looks like its a month off, or a typo. If it get's fixed now, it doesn't confuse people religiously reading through your blog entries 40 years from now, when they get around to the SG1 Series Finale.

Since posted this. Check your computer's date, reset it if it's wrong and monitor it. Might be a bug. Good luck/po/bm
HI Joe,
You don't see any concern with the crossover, what planet are you on!! 99% of the fans I've talked to are against Sam on Atlantis, the only people who seem the slightest bit happy are the rabid Sam fans. Atlantis is supposed to be a seperate show and how can it possibly develop and grow if we have Sam on there as a recurring character, thats tying it to SG1 and it doesn't need that. It has so much potential, please allow the characters to develop with Sam on Atlantis it will push the other characters development back. Not all of us love Sam like you do and bringing her onto Atlantis will upset the balance there. We love our Sam free Atlantis if we want to see Sam we can watch SG1. Please leave her on SG1 and write some good stories for her there. We certainly don't want any Sam/McKay ship on Atlantis or Sam any ship and lately thats all the writers seem to do with her. She's the Capt Kirk of SG1 and thats unfair to the actress she's more than that. Give her a chance to shine on SG1 where she belongs. She deserves that much for 9 years service to the show. Leave Atlantis alone to grow and develop on it's own.
Wow, people can leave some nasty comments on here...
Anywho, I like how both shows are progressing... and can't wait for Grace Under Pressure! Yay McKay! But people should learn that they can't control a TV series and should just go with how it's going. ><
Gravitation is ok... agreed on the "meh". A bunch of my friends are crazy over it, I don't see the attraction... I'm quite a Naruto junkie so I suggest watching that.... (Not the dub please! Subs! Subs! SUBS! *eats*) My friend suggests Card Captor Sakura but she's a weirdo. :3
T_T Poor Arrested Development. It had a shotty time slot and like 0 advertisement. Hysterical series.
Keep up the wonderful blogs. They make me laugh everytime! :) Whatsa happened to your ice cream? O_o

Joe,
I'm surprised you don't get many fans' reactions to Carter on Atlantis. It seems that most fans would be just fine for Carter to make a guest appearance, but it is another thing to have her recurring on Atlantis, because it implies that she won't be on SG-1 much, and she could take too much time from the underdeveloped Atlantis characters.
All you have to do to reassure fans is to:
1) be very clear about her position on SG-1 for season 10: that is, will Sam remain a main and central character as she has been in the past (I'm hoping for leading SG-1--yeah I know, highly unlikely)--reassure fans that Mitchell and Vala are not pushing Sam off SG-1!! You read these posts, right? Can't you see that this is a major source of freaking out!
2) be very clear about her continuing "co-lead" position with Mitchell in season 10,
3) and as importantly be very clear about how often the TPTB plan to have her go to Atlantis in season 3. If it is just a guest appearance--no problem. If it is like Caldwell--you've got to be kidding me. If she is this recurring, that what the heck happens to Sam in SG-1!
Can't you see that if she goes to Atlantis, many SG-1 fans are worried about her status/position over in SG-1--that is where many people are freaking out.
Supernova--one of the growing number of Sam fans at the Sony forum!
Joe,
You don't see any concern with multiple, big arc crossovers because like the other producers, you seem to have developed a franchise-only mentality. Sure, the proposed crossover sounds good from a franchise perspective. You can tout it as "Atlantisis in dire straights, and only Sam Carter can save them", or "Stargate's best journey to Atlantis to stop an unstopable threat" or some other wonderfully trite teaser. Atlantis is likely to draw increased viewers when Sam or Daniel appears on the show. And, as you have said, you like writing for Daniel and Sam. They're "easy" to write for. So, from the perspective of someone who has 40 hours of tv to produce, I can see where this sort of gimmick may be appealing.
However, these crossover plans are not good for either series individually. Carter or Daneil not being on SG-1 will hurt SG-1 the show. Not many people are invested enough or care enough about the new characters to tune in and watch without the original trio of Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel there. Many of us feel that the story is illogical enough already in season nine. If members of SG-1 aren't going to be around in season 10, then it hardly seems worth going on. I know you've heard this a lot, but no one seems to be listening up there in Vancouver. We, the fans, and just about ALL of the fans, want to see the team. We want more team episodes, stories where SG-1 the team does stuff. Enough with the rotating character of the week stories. The TEAM is what made SG-1 work orginally. And the lack of team is what is making it fail in its newest incarnation.
Such a massive crossover will hurt Atlantis too. As many Atlantis fans have pointed out, there is just about only one character on Atlantis that seems to get any development--Mckay. And from the looks of things, that's the way it's going to be for all of season 2. There are a pelthora of other charcters that need to be developed on Atlantis, Weir and Teyla chief among them. Like it or not, Carter or Daniel's presence on Atlantis will push someone from the Atlantis cast to the background. It is inevitable. And, yes, contrary to what you may think, Col. Caldwell did in fact stifle development of the Atlantis characters. He was weakly written cliche who sucked screentime from Teyla and Beckett. And he also allowed you guys to not have the Atlantis team solve their problems on their own. Caldwell and his big shiny ship are the perpetual deus ex manchina for Atlantis. I can't help but think Carter or Daniel will turn into the same thing. Also, if you crossover Carter or Daniel and do nothing with them, then there will be a whole lot of angry fans for those characters as well.
I'm sorry, but from an Atlantis perspective or an SG-1 persepective, this giant crossover doesn't work. It does, sort of, from a franchise one, though. The problem with that is that you would be sacrificing the quality of both shows in order to get what will ultimately be very little gain. Fans, by and large, hate the idea of these crossovers. And, I'm sorry, but to many of us the franchise perspective equates with the money perspective for you guys. So to us, it looks like you're willing to sacrifice characters, plots, and entire shows just to scrape a few more bucks out of the Stargate name. And that is troubling.
SG1 fans might be worried about Sam on SG1 but Atlantis fans don't want her on Atlantis we have a big enough cast already. The odd guest appearance maybe but even that is really too much. Please let Atlantis stand on it's own it isn't SG1 it's supposed to be a seperate show please keep it that way. Keep Sam on SG1 where she belongs.
hi, joe,
i agree with Supernova; please answer these sam-related concerns!
sally :)
You guys are shameless. First you take away command from Sam and THEN you complain that you don't know what to do with her???? That takes a certain, very special kind of idiocy, Joe.
Not a Sam Fan said:
"You don't see any concern with the crossover, what planet are you on!! 99% of the fans I've talked to are against Sam on Atlantis, the only people who seem the slightest bit happy are the rabid Sam fans."
Actually, the only group I see really happy about the situation are the rabid Daniel/Vala fans. A mere handful of Sam fans are cautiously optimistic that the situation can be handled correctly (with neither Sam nor the SGA characters being pushed to the background) but most of us "rabid" Sam fans as you call us are not happy and would rather she play a integral role on SG1 like she has for the past eight years. We want SG1 to focus on the team, with Sam being a equal member of that team. Not too much to ask, is it?
Personally, I can't see that happening with her doing a "guest" role on SGA for half of the season and only being on SG1 for the other half. But I guess we will just have to wait and see. I'm willing to give it a chance. If I don't like it, I won't watch.
Well, Joe, I have to give it to you guys, you've done it again. Now, instead of fans being excited and amped up about what's going to happen on SG-1 and Atlantis next season, we're all terrified and worried. And whatever your season ending cliffhangers are, they're now going to be completely overshadowed by what damn near all of us see as huge, honkin' mess waiting to happen with the crossover.
How is any of this good?
And isn't all this fear and loathing the exact opposite of what the big crossover idea is supposed to engender?
Wait, she's gonna go from being Sam Carter on SG1 to Col. Caldwell on Atlantis, and this is supposed to be maximizing her potential?
That has got to be the single greatest insult to the character and actress I've seen online in my five plus years of fandom. Kudos Joe, you win the award.
Joe,
Will Sam Carter continue to be a team member of SG-1 when they go off-world in season 10? Will she continue to be a main/central character on Stargate SG-1 in season 10? Will she continue to co-lead with Mitchell in season 10?
You must know these answers if you have have at least discussed 10-12 episodes of SG-1 already. Would you be kind and answer these questions?!
Thanks!
Cathy
Hi Agree with these sentiments that anonymous wrote,

I was excited to learn both shows were going to be renewed now instead of being happy and excited I'm nervous and worried. This crossover idea is wrong for all sorts of reasons, it's not fair on Sam and it's so not fair on the Atlantis cast. Atlantis needs to stand alone we were told that it would now we have Col Sam Caldwell, how is that good. Most Sam fans are not happy, Atlantis fans are definately not happy the only happy fans seem to be the ones who haven't bothered to watch Atlantis and are going to watch it because she's in it. Well just watch the non Sam fans who were once Atlantis fans turn off so you may win over some new fans temporarily but you will loose permanent fans who don't want to see Sam on there taking time away from the established cast and AT will loose out because of the backlash from fans which is so unfair to her and wrong to put her in this position. I'm no big Sam fan but I think after 9 years on a show she deserves more than to be put in a position she obvioulsy isn't comfortable with and will have a lot of fans being angry at her for and it isn't her fault. If you care at all about Sam give her the recogition she deserves and give her plenty of good storylines on SG1 where she can shine. Atlantis doesn't seem Sam to save them, they have McKay and Sheppard for that.
Joe, I read over at Solutions that you guys no longer have an on set producer. You should get one. Any chance of luring Mike Greenburg back? I really think he brought a lot to the show, especially when it came to pull with the studio.
Hey Joe,
Just a request here, but please no more Brad Turner episodes. I just watched Beachead last night, and after watching Origin too I'm back to my belief that his direction is just too static and clunky for SG1. It is especially stilted when compared to Martin Wood's or Peter DeLuise's, both of whom seem to have the best grasp of that "Stargate feel". Thanx for reading this,
Reeny1955
I don't watch SG1. I love SGA, though.
I love the Atlantis characters and would love more eps focused on Teyla, Weir, Sheppard, or even more development for background characters like Zelenka (he's great!) or Kusinagi (she was fun), or Lorne (loved when he snarked with McKay.) I'd love more backstory and a feel for the "bigger mythology" of Pegasus and the characters and the city.
Please, don't have Sam come "rescue" them. I was disappointed in Siege 3 because Caldwell saved everyone and the team didn't get to save themselves. That was a bit of a let down.
Otherwise, I adore Atlantis. I watch it and BSG. Hey, how about watching BSG to learn how to write strong female characters who actually have something to do?
Since I don't watch SG1,a giant crossover with that show doesn't appeal to me. Why don't you just let Dr. Who show up next to save the day? To me, SGA is as separate an entity from SG1 as Dr. Who is from either.
And SGA's excellent that way.
I know Stargate SG-1 is focusing more on the Ori at the moment (to be expected) but I miss the days of exploring new worlds and finding new things. Exploring new worlds and finding new things benifited the show by giving the writers something to write about after you explored that episode and branced it out into others. It really kept the diversity of the show up. I must say I do miss the team-feel of each week exploring a new world. Not to denote Stargate, it's been amazing.
I don't watch SG1 either so a crossover wouldn't appeal to me but I do want to learn more about the Pegasus Galaxy and the new characters on Atlantis. I do like Major Lorne and hope he comes back in Season 3. He's pretty good at snarking with McKay. I'd also like to see Dr Weir develop more and I have to be honest I didn't mind Caldwell coming over. He and Weir butted heads quite a bit and I'd enjoy seeing more of that. Let her show her true leadership abilities which up until now seem to be sadly lacking. Bringing in a strong female character when the two you already have haven't been allowed to develop isn't going to do the characters any good.
Please keep Atlantis seperate and let us enjoy the new cast and show.
Your almost there, Joe, but it's still November. Really. Promise. November.
(I don't know why that bugs me so much.)
majorsal wrote:- "yeah, let the PILOT lead the team. don't let the person that's been training for *this position* for 8 years as second in command be leader."
Lt Colonel Mitchell is an officer in the USAF. He was a leader of a squadron before Sam was promoted. He is trained to command and to strategize. That's what the military does, train its people to become officers and leaders so they can handle any situation. Pilots especially are required to be quick thinking with fast reflexes, able to plan and rethink in seconds and squadron leaders have to have the ability to inspire absolute trust from their subordinates. Sam was training for 8 years to be a leader? I thought Sam sucked when she was in command. She let her emotions get the better of her, she made bad decisions, she has no command presence whatsoever - when she does try to give orders she comes across as domineering instead of commanding. I never believed in her as a team leader. She is much more suited to doing what she's good at which is being a scientist. Why is it so important that Sam lead the team? Is it just some misguided wish to inflict leadership upon her so Sam can have status and glory? Team leader is a fulltime job. That means no time for scientific study. Sam is a superb scientist so why limit her to being the one who keeps an eye on the others and enable them to do their job, and is the one stuck with prepping missions and paperwork when she could be doing scientific research and study instead? Does anyone seriously think Carter would rather be leading a mission than having the freedom to do the work she loves best? Do you seriously think Sam is more suited to counting out MREs and reading over reports than going on missions and being a scientist?
Joe,
Now that Scifi.com has announced Claudia Black as a regular, time to make another entry before this one implodes from comments ;)
Will Claudia's addition to SG1 impact Amanda's role, and thus, will Amanda spend more time on SGA, thus impacting character development and dynamics on SG1?
Hey you missed the angry Mitchell fans- I mean we get angry if you miss us.. which er makes for a circular argument.. :P :D
Hooray! Vala is a regular in season 10! Thank you for bringing the second original SG-1 team back!!!
Wow, you didn't even need to wait for the space sprog to jump the shark. What a crappy way for a once great show to peter out. Shame you didn't end it at eight like you all knew it should have been. Just another sacrifice for Atlantis' well being. Heaven knows it would sink like a stone without SG1 as its lead in.
Second original team? Do you mean Jack, Sam, Teal'c, and Daniel? They were created after the original team in the movie. Or what about Jack, Sam, Teal'c, and Jonas in season six? Wouldn't they be the second team? (By the way, the term "second original" doesn't exist. There can be only one original team and it certainly didn't contain Vala, no matter how you spin it.)
But I have a feeling that fans who use Sony forum jargon such as second original team and miniseries care less about canonical and grammatical accuracy and more about covering their ears and eyes and chanting that Sam never existed.
Second Original... heh heh. Is that like, "more betterer?"

I'm lamenting the cancellation of Arrested Development with you.
Oh, Christ. Let the fan exodus begin.
Oh, Christ. Let the fan exodus begin.
Atlantis is fine without SG1, it's a great show all on it's own.
sure it is. that's why Carter has to come save it, right? Keep selling yourself on that line and maybe you'll actually convince yourself of it if Atlantis ever goes it alone. Little brother indeed.
Vala's back full time in season ten?... here comes the official beginning of the end of this once wonderful series.
Yes I can see it now as I look into my crystal ball. I can see the Vala is going to foce Sam to leave the SGC and move to Atlantis because of the clothes that she wears.
I can see the problems that having 2 diametrically different female characters are going to cause. Oh no, it wont be good TV. Not at all, it will be bad - why? Because I say so, and I must be right, because I have the ability to fortell the future, even though I have no idea how this current season will end. Woe is me.
Sheesh.
hey any chance of the team comin to europe to do a convention? i'm from holland and went to one of the conventions on the us and loved it. so any chance of seeing the sg-1 team in europe?
Gee Joe, bet you feel put in your place now, huh? A bunch of illiterate, obsessed shippers have told you everything that is wrong with your show and how bad and terrible it is and how everyone is going to stop watching. Shame about how the ratings keep proving them wrong but Gateworlders never did let the facts get in the way of a good diatribe.
Enjoying season 9, looking forward to season 10. Can't wait for more Vala. Change is a beautiful thing, man.
I concur with the recommendation for the Stinky Rose. If you love garlic, it is a must.
Hi Joe
I admire you for keeping up this blog and reading our comments. Just thought I’d throw in some angry rants of my own.
I actually like the Daniel/Vala dynamic. She’s good for him. We get to see a side of Daniel we don’t normally see, it doesn’t mean it was never there. I don’t think Vala is a cheap slut, I see her as “everyman”. She’s said a lot of things this season that I found myself thinking and sometimes you need to hear that. In “Beachhead” I knew that greedy Goa’uld couldn’t be trusted and it was good to hear Vala say it.
I loved the scene in “Prototype” where Cam flicks a switch and Daniel shouts at him “New Guy”. I said the same thing and it was something I imagine Jack would have said. If we’re not going to be seeing much of Jack then Vala works for me. People think she’s OTT but some of the stuff she comes out with are things I imagine Jack would say. The only difference is Jack would try to show a little respect. Vala doesn’t owe anyone anything, (well she may do but will she ever let on). Plus she was host to a Goa’uld some of that holier than thou thinking must have rubbed off on her. We accepted Jack’s quirkiness why not Vala? Just because she’s NEW, because she’s not Sam, or is it because she manages to make an SGC uniform look sexy? Let’s just see where the storylines take us.
As for Teal’c he doesn’t just say “Indeed”, he speaks absolute volumes with his eyebrows and facial expressions. Without saying a word you can tell that he’s warming up to Cam or that he thinks Vala is an airhead. He’s so cool. But yeah to jump on the bandwagon he could do with a new word or two.
All in all I’m liking season nine. I like the new guy. I like him because of his newness. He didn’t want to lead SG1, he wanted to join them! Cut him some slack! At least he’s managed to get the band back together. And then there’s the Ori: the Ancient’s evil siblings. I can’t wait to see how they get they’re asses kicked.
I’m looking forward to the rest of the season on both shows and roll on season 10 and 3!
Lost is still the best show on TV. I for one am loving season 2.
Hmm...Im not going to jump to stargate bandwagon, mainly because I have been watching the show since I was 5(ish)and missing it would be like cutting off my arm..but I never thought I would see the day when I actually prefered Atlantis to Sg1! Why is Sam taking orders from Mitchell?? Why is Daniel not being Daniel?? WHY WONT SAM AND JACK GET MARRIED???? I really, really, reeeally dont like Cameron Mitchell..its not that he is the leader of sg1 when it so should have been Sam(whats up with that?)but he doesnt seem to have a point..he has no history in the show, and yet early on in the season he get a whole epsiode revolving around him?! Sigh..I think that Vala, Dr. Lam and General Landry are great charchters though :) Heehee, Landry's eyebrows make him remind me of a teddy bear : p
The Ori are good new bad guys too!
Byebye! :D
Tori
p.s. LOST season 2 isnt on here yet (Stupid Ireland!) but I can't believe that they killed Shannon..and I love anime!! Spirited Away is my absolutly favorite movie :D
