December 28, 2005

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. After three + weeks of non-stop writing, I've taken a break to entertain, read, and catch up on a couple of movies I've been meaning to check out. On the movie front, nothing but disappointments as I try to find a good comedy. To be perfectly honest, I can't remember the last time I watched a good, funny movie. Oh, yeah, now I remember. I think it was this last summer when I re-watched Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for perhaps the twenty-fifth time. I wondered if, maybe, I'm just too hard to please (because the guys at work have really enjoyed some recent movies that I just found, at best, fitfully amusing), but then I do enjoy a lot of comedy on t.v.: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld re-runs, The Office [the original, natch], occasional episodes of The Simpsons and Family Guy. Its not like I'm necessarily looking for high-brow, intellectual fare, but when, for instance, a movie has to create a scenario whereby: Character A chooses to relieve himself off a balcony without, for reasons that are known only to him and the scriptwriter, bothering to check what's below, while Character B, who happens to be sitting below, through a series of contrivances, doesn't seem to realize what is happening... Well, you get the idea.

Good Christmas haul, especially for the dogs who managed to tear apart two of the twelve toys they received. For my part, I got some terrific cookbooks, running shoes that were a full size too small, "gourmet" chocolates my sister purchased in Montreal which included such interesting flavors as Blue Cheese, Basil, and Madras Curry (!) - and, no doubt, the best gift I received: the 2005 version of PC for PC's, a software program that can transform any script into a politically correct, thoroughly uncontroversial masterpiece. It says right on the box: "Guaranteed to re-format scripts to pat, inoffensive standards". I couldn't resist and ran my first draft of Morpheus through the program. The script came in at over 120+ pages because, it turned out, I had the "Nothing Left to the Imagination" option turned on. This option ensures that even a Bornean exchange student with no understanding of the English language will know exactly which character is where, doing what and, most importantly, why. The solution to the problem our characters face is immediately presented to the audience within the first five minutes in order to avoid the unpleasantness of mystery and having to wait forty-some minutes for the answer to ponderously reveal itself. Another reason for the high page count is that the team is never separated! Instead of having Daniel at the ruins deciphering Ancient script while Carter is in the lab working on a piece of tech as Landry is in his office talking to the Pentagon, the entire team gets to participate in all facets of discovery - watching while Daniel deciphers, looking on as Carter experiments, and squeezing into Landry's office for that call with the Pentagon. "But hang on!"you're probably saying. "This sounds like a pretty heavy Daniel-Carter-Landry episode. It sounds like Mitchell, Vala, and Teal'c will be doing nothing but standing around!" Well, here's good news. PC for PC's actually revises the dialogue, ensuring that each character has an equal amount of screentime. The beauty of the program is that, rather than counting lines or words, it actually provides a syllable count, ensuring that every character enunciates an equal amount of syllables in every episode. Certain words are automatically replaced to assure equality - for instance, Carter's: "I'm shocked!" might be revised to "I'm flabbergasted!", providing those three extra syllables necessary for uniformity. Also, kiss those "Who should be team leader?" debates goodbye because, thanks to PC for PC's, everyone gets to be team leader! Mitchell, Carter, Daniel, Teal'c, Vala - even fan favorite Walter Harriman gets to flex his command muscles. And, perhaps the best part of the program is that it removes any potential unpleasantness that might be deemed disrespectful to one of our main characters. No more: "Oh, Carter is in trouble. The writers are doing damsel in distress!" or "Oh, Daniel is captured. The writers are making him look vulnerable." Rather than traveling off-world and encountering problems that could present a danger to them, now, the team will travel off-world and "think" they've encoutered a problem that could present a danger to them - only, it turns out, that what they've encountered is neither dangerous nor problematic, but gloriously unexceptional. After the requisite 12 page tag scene in which our characters offer a detailed summary of the events we've just seen unfold, we go out on the closing credits which will be comprised of one enourmous card holding the names of everyone involved in the production, from show runner to on-set boot-scuffer. As the closing theme plays, the names will automatically change positions every quarter second in a thoroughly random pattern, again ensuring equality for all.

Spoke to Paul and he's busy working on episode 2 of Atlantis, the one where Beckett finds himself "trapped in the asylum when the inmates take over". He says he's having a great time for "that Star Trek alumni" who will be making a first appearance on Atlantis. Also on the Atlantis front, Rob is working on the sequel to the Atlantis episode he wrote while Brad has been working on the third episode of SG-1 as well as that wild (some will no doubt say "crazy") idea for the 200th episode, getting on it early as it will take some time to prepare for. Martin's got the McKay's sister story and Carl's working on the big two-parter that sees the introduction of the new big bads.

Made three flavors of ice cream for the holidays: Egg Nog, Vanilla-Almond, and Milk Chocolate with Shaved White Chocolate Toblerone. All successses, but the gang at work will have to wait until this Summer for Ice Cream Fridays to start up again.

Well, looks like the sun is coming out which means I can finally take those dogs for a walk. Keep those recipes coming!

Hey Joe, here's another recipe for you. It's sinfully delicious and very easy to make:

Potato Casserole

Pour a 2 pound bag of frozen hashbrown potatoes into a long casserole pan (I've always used cubed hashbrowns, but it probably doesn't matter)

Melt 1 stick of margarine or butter in a separate pan.

Into pan used to melt butter, stir:
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
1 pint sour cream
1 chopped onion
1 diced green pepper (optional)
2 cups shredded colby or montery jack cheese (or a mix of both)

Stir, then pour over potatoes and mix

Cover with a light layer of bread crumbs

Bake 350 degrees for 1 hour

Did you ever watch Space Above and Beyond? I followed it when it was showing... kind of a gritty, marines-in-space show. I honestly don't remember many details except liking it at the time. Oh, and being traumatized for days by the ending... but I noticed that it's out on DVD now.

Cheers,
Strix

Funny movies, you say?

Well if you appreciate Dave Barry humor, you might enjoy a flick called "Big Trouble" that I found extremely funny (just saw it a couple days ago). That, "Quick Change" and "Noises Off" are a few of my must-see comedies.

I'm still lookin' forward to a publishing of said ice cream recipes...heck, I posted one of my recipes after all. What's good for the goose and all that... ;)

I'm especially interested in the Toblerone one and any future recipes that might include maraschino cherries and chocolate. :D

Mary Beth

P.S...Does PC for PC's take into account character voices? I could be wrong but I just don't see Sam as an "I'm flabbergasted!" kinda gal. Perhaps that "True Character Voice" plug-in is only available in the upgrade...PC for PC 2.0.

Just come back from a walk on Kits Beach... are your dogs familiar with this one? It's pretty cool.

You said that Paul was working on a script for Atlantis... please, tell me that he's gonna spend more than two days on this one and won't write something like "the tower" which was the worst epiosde I've ever watched...

I've got a question concerning the scriptwriting thing... I was wondering if you guys had to sign a contract and were paid every week or month... OR if you were paid according to the amount of episode you're working on. ( I'm not asking for the amount of the cheque... I'm pretty sure it's way more than a PA ! )

Any chance we've got some characters developpement in season 3 of Atlantis? as in ... yes they are human, they have feelings, they have a past... and so on...

Haven't seen them. Quick Change? Was that the one with Bill Murray? I've considered Noises Off, but have never been a fan of movies adapted from the stage.

My dogs are more familiar with Kits Beach than I am since that's where our dog sitter takes them for their uber-walks.

"I was wondering if you guys had to sign a contract and were paid every week or month... OR if you were paid according to the amount of episode you're working on."

We sign contracts and are paid as producers. We are paid for scripts separately.

"Any chance we've got some characters developpement in season 3 of Atlantis?"

Yup. We've already got a couple of scripts in the works that will focus on the pasts/backgrounds of two of our team members.

As for Noises Off...I agree with you in principle. Some films that come from the stage are not so good. This one, however, is just a riot. I challenge you to watch that one and let me know if you agree.

I don't think he'll apologize because he was reacting to the heat of the moment. Also, I think Vala ended up in the Ori galaxy because she chose to act.

As Carter pointed out in Lockdown, there's nothing in the regulation that states an SG team has to be made up of four members.

Joe, any chance you could plug that PC software into your Atlantis scripts as well? That would stop Sheppard from sleeping with a good chunk of the women he encounters on offworld missions.

On second thought, the software would probably spit out a script where everyone on Atlantis sleeps with everyone else. Maybe you should save that sucker for the fourth season.

Ah, sorry, I suppose the question can be read that way. When you wrote "idea" in your blog, I took it to refer to the entire episode, not just a particular idea or aspect of the episode. Anyway, same question phrased a little more broadly:

Any chance of Jack O'neill showing up in the 200th episode?

PS
And I don't really consider O'neill being in an episode that "wild" or "crazy" of an idea.

Hi Joe:

Loved your latest blog, gave me a real laugh! Seriously, it's almost true, so many people here seem to want everything written into the script that they're interested in, and their own personal agenda addressed. I'm glad you don't take it too seriously. I'm just glad to be entertained and see actual writers make the decisions for the scripts, so I can just sit and see what happens and not worry about making the kind of decisions you guys have to make.

It's also nice to see you have a snarky sense of humor, I love that. It must be a prerequisite to work on Stargate, everyone MUST have a sense of humor! There's no other way the lot of you could deal with the craziness in the fan world.

I'm with you on the lack of laugh out loud funny in the comedies lately. I think the funniest movie I've seen in a long time, and it was years ago, was "My Cousin Vinny". Did you catch that when it was out? If not,be sure and watch it when you need a good laugh.

I stepped in to present a counterpoint to people who are arguing show logic. Personal attacks on actors are worthless and not really worth addressing. For what its worth, I've often said that Amanda is a terrific actress with an often thankless role - that of the straight person, and the scientist who must deliver reams of exposition to advance the story yet always manages to do so strongly and convincingly.

Will second the recommendation of Noises Off. I saw it a few years ago (maybe more than a few) and it was terrific. Good fluffy fun and it isn't bogged down with scatalogical humor, which seems to be the staple of most comedies these days.

Oh and you absolutely MUST get your hands on a copy of Nothing. Veers more into the gross humor, but it's HYSTERICAL. And David Hewlett is, of course, fabulous. ;)

Hmm. Other than Stuck on You and Fever Pitch, I can't recall any fun modern comedies (and I was a bit biased towards liking those two). I'll have to go through my collection and see if I have anything else. Harvey, of course, and Desk Set and Bringing Up Baby... I have to have something more current...

Hey Joe,
Did some Googling and found an extension for the PC sofware component; it's called RBGXPress (Rectifying Bad Goodbyes). Made by group called WELUVJO. It basically looks at all characters of Stargate over the past 8.5 years and rates them based on their contributions to saving the word and degree of pleasure they provided the audience. (Yeah...can't figure out how the darned thing works -- technology). At any rate, when one leaves the show, it measures silences, words not spoken, tributes not given, explanations muddled and in will write proper dialog, tributes, inserting them into the episodes in the proper places in future episodes. The Preferences allows the user to insert them frequently, infrequently, or just once. Cool hey?

Cost is $79.95, but I think they'd give you a discount!!!

"We noticed that some stories were not written by the "regular" writers, do you easily accept scripts from the outside? ( I'm not talking about fan sending scripts, but professionals)"

Not really. Inviting an outsider to pitch is a long process in which: 1) we are approached by an agent, and then, provided the writer is of interest 2) we read his or her writing samples and, provided their writing samples are strong 3) they are invited to pitch, and provided their pitches engender some interest, 4) they are contracted to write an outline, and if they do a good job on the outline, 5) They are asked to write the script and provided they write a good script 6) They may be asked to pitch more ideas, write more scripts, or even come on staff. But, to be honest, it rarely happens. More often than not, when you see a name you don't recognize on the credits, it usually means the writer came up with a good idea but, for whatever reason, didn't come through on the script.

Talking about TV, do you watch "Grey's Anatomy" ???

Hard to predict what one fan will consider more, less, or equal. In my opinion, I'd say some episodes will be equal and others will be definitely less. Maybe a couple could even fall into the more category.

You already guessed my response. Its possible. Seriously though - Amanda did a terrific job directing and any hesitation about her directing another episode stems only from the scheduling headache it invites. And the same would apply for any actor taking the director's chair.

To be honest, its not really something that interests me. No. Let me rephrase that. It interests me, but not enough to make the sacrifice, like Rob did last year. I don't need to point out that prior to his directing gig on Crusade, Rob Cooper boasted a full head of beautiful golden locks.

1 lb of Hamburger
and your choice of Veggie.. (I usually use Corn or Peas, but I bet it would be good with those other veggies like that green one that Bush sr hated..)

Sushi is always good and can be made a million different ways. California rolls are great but the real think is great but only for the 24-36 hours after they are make aka fresh. WOW you write quite often for someone with your work schedule.

So I wrote a question on your last post but since you have moved over to this one I will restate breifly just cause I am interested in what you have to say.

After watching other shows like LOST, 24, and others have you ever considered using some of their techniques, storytelling ideas or approaches in your shows as ways to enhance the experience of a particular episode or story arc? I enjoyed an episode of Without a Trace at the end of November 2005 that was done from the point of view of the family instead of the FBI cause it allows the audience to understand both sides. I know you have done some of this before but I guess I think it would be cool every once in awhile for us to see for an episode or two how SG-1 functions with the other units, when they don't have the information necessary to take the lead and how that other team functions as the primary focus and their interactions with SG-1.

Oh and what was is your favorite holiday dish and desert? Holidays are the best time for food.

Happy New Year to Everyone!!

I'm a fairly adventurous eater and will try almost anything - although I'll think twice about ordering the lobster sashimi next time I'm out. The chef cut off the tail. stripped the meat, then served it on a plate adorned with the upper half of the lobster that, with its last iota of strength, appeared to be fending off any attempts to feast on him.

Playing with the timeline and using flashbacks are some unique ways to tell a story which we have used in the past, and will use in the future (Check out Collateral Damage for one). I think that what makes them interesting is their uniqueness. In other words, a little goes a long way.

Joe, please don't write a Sam/Jack scene in season 10 (have already had waaay too much Sam to fill the remaining years of my life thanks) and I'll bribe you with a huge jar of nutella and a box of tim tams (either is great for ice cream btw).

Have you ever tried Christmas cake ice cream? There are 2 ways to make it.

1. Take the mixed fruit and soak in brandy for a few days (the more days the better). Make a good batch of vanilla bean ice cream. Dry out mixed fruit and mix into softened ice cream (add nuts if so inclined). Freeze. Eat (with fresh apricots or blood plums it's yummy).

2. Take a bog standard Christmas fruit cake and soak in brandy for a few days (yes, the more days the better). Make a good batch of vanilla bean ice cream. Mold cake into cake tin/shape of choice. Add soften ice cream on top. Freeze. A number of options then present themselves. I love coating the turned out cake/ice cream combo in good quality melted dark chocolate (70% for non foodie guests or if I'm feeling really evil and it's the foodie guests 85%), and/or serving with grand marnier soaked apricots.

Sensing a theme here? ;-)

One day (if you are REALLY good), I will share my chocolate pecan pavlova (can be done with hazelnut too). It's to die for, but only eat a little meal before hand.

Brookie.

ps - you don't like lobster sashimi? Granted the description of the service would put me off too, but it's divine.

Yay! It'd be so cool to see some female-female interaction which avoids the "catfight" cliche so common on TV. And if these two could get past their very different styles to team up for 5 minutes, they'd be unstoppable.

Plus - they're both ex-hosts - got to be the basis for some interesting conversations there. And Vala might be pleasantly surprised by Sam's motorbike-riding, spaceship-racing side ...

Bearing in mind Stargate was based on ideas in books on "Alternative Egypt" and such like, do some of the writers read those kinds of books to tap into what's being theorised?

It obviously works in reverse as well - The Stargate Conpiracy by Lynn Picknett & Clive Prince...
