Well, I just finished up my latest installment of the In the Making series, a big three page behind the scenes look at Ripple Effect which includes most of the scenes and sequences that didn't make the final cut. Its not secret that I love this episode and am interested in seeing what kind of response it gets tomorrow night. It will be paired with Atlantis's Critical Mass which sets up a neat little mystery, bringing back some familiar faces (like Lt. Cadman and the much-missed Kavanagh).
Finished the rewrites on Morpheus and Counter-Strike and will be reviewing them both this weekend. On Monday, I'll be getting notes on Memento-Mori and preliminary indications are the first draft is in pretty good shape. Saw the almost-finished visual effects for Camelot and they are amazing. We screened the Day One mix the other day and Carl said it was the best episode of SG-1 he's ever seen. I'm kind of biased because I wrote the episode and feel the need to display some of my trademark humility (ha ha), so I will NOT say its the best episode of SG-1 ever.
But its certainly in the top ten.
Good news! Paul finally has a title for his script. Atlantis, episode 2: The Begotten. Quick, make it official before he changes his mind! Rob and Martin got in revised drafts of Flesh and Blood and No Man's Land respectively. Both great season premieres, but the Cooper episode I'm really looking forward to is Sateda which he not only wrote, but will be directing and producing. If he thought he had his hands full with Crusade - well, let's just say we're going to be sure to hide all of the sharp kitchen knives while this one is being shot.
Next week we are finally, absolutely, positively spinning stories. We've got the 200th episode to work on and Alan's heist episode, and the SG-1 mid-season two-parter that already has the visual effects department salivating. Today, we had a preliminary discussion on the Atlantis mid-season two-parter which promises some exploration, a complication leading to a confrontation, an altercation, an attempt at communication, increasing frustration, an investigation uncovering certain information that offers an explanation, setting up a determination and ensuing culmination in a celebration. Honest. That's what we've got so far.
On the DVD front, I finished Vandread (meh. I preferred Nadeisco) and have started Cromartie High School (And I thought Excel Saga was weird) and will be starting Samurai Champloo (the final volume came out a couple of weeks ago). Also, have to check out the latest Lupin. Have got one more episode to go in the third season of Homicide, and have started on the latest Family Guy release (I'm amazed at what they get away with). Have been holding off on Serenity because Paul wants to see it, but it looks like he'll be too busy for the time being.
Well, that's it for this entry. I'm still checking out all the posts but skipping over those dedicated to ragging on the actors, as if these whiners have nothing better to do with their time...What am I saying. Of course they don't. Anyway, let me know what you thought of Ripple Effect - and Critical Mass while you're at it.
Ha, ha, first comment.
I win, you all lose.
Top ten, eh? Honestly Joe, you haven't sniffed the top ten, or even top twenty, once this season. What's so great about Camelot? You can tell us. Ooh, I know, more babysitting for Carter, right? Silence for Teal'c? More Rambo Daniel? Please, let us in on the wonderous details.

Were you refreshing Joe's blog until he updated just so you could post a gem like that? You suck at the Internet.
Joseph, I'll give you $10 for a copy of the near finished Camelot. Right now. I can be in Burnaby or downtown in 5 minutes.
Hey Joe! Thanks for the updates. I really like reading your blogs. Anyway, since you say you're spinning stories, I just wanted to push for having both Daniel and Sam in all 20 episodes of SG1 next year. They're my favorite characters now that Jack is gone, and it would really suck if either of them wasn't on SG1 for every episode next season. So, basically what I'm asking for here is that you guys just try and keep the team together. That means having Carter and Daniel there all the time. Thanks for listening.
Elizabeth McCullins
Joe,
Any word on whether Jack O'neill will be in the 200th episode? Please, please ask him to appear! It would just be wrong not to have him.
Hey Joe. I don't mean to be a pest to you (or anyone else here, for that matter) by asking an ancient question, but I noticed that one of the newer podcasts on scifiscoundrels.com stated that SciFi Channel will be cancelling SG-1 (Please God NOOOO!) and replacing it with a Battlestar Galactica spinoff entitled Battlefield Caprica. Does this mean that SciFi is actually pulling the plug on Season 10, declaring that Season 10 will absolutely be the last, or is this just a false rumor? Thanks.
There are still whiners watching SG-1? And here I thought they'd be complaining about something less worthy of them.
I hope you enjoy Samurai Champloo... I think it's in my top ten list of anime, and I've only seen a few episodes. And you still haven't seen Serenity?!
I agree with the guy asking for Jack in the 200th ep.... I can't imagine Richard not wanting in on it.
"more babysitting for Carter, right?"
I don't even know what that means.
"Silence for Teal'c?"
Interestingly enough, I was doing one of the DVD commentaries with Martin Wood who told me that, according to Chris, Teal'c has had more dialogue in the past season than in the first three season of SG-1 combined.
"Joseph, I'll give you $10 for a copy of the near finished Camelot. Right now. I can be in Burnaby or downtown in 5 minutes."
If only my car wasn't in the shop...
I don't even know what that means.
It refers to the fact that in the last two episodes we've seen (both scripted by one Joe Mallozzi), Carter does nothing but babysit the two children featured in those episodes, Orlin and Mitchell. What, did those scripts read "Carter glances at Orlin/Mitchell with sympathy and compassion" about 100 times? And it's not just a Carter thing. Daniel has been useless for the last two episodes, too. He was a wiz a turning that dial in FHII, though. And as for Chris Judge, as is often the case, he's just wrong about having more dialogue--no sarcastic argument required.

Hi Joe, I really enjoy reading your blog and am glad that you skip over the insults directed towards the actors. I was curious if we will ever see Thor again or if he was retired with Rick? I know we have a new asgard but I still miss Thor and Michael doing the voice.
"I noticed that one of the newer podcasts on scifiscoundrels.com stated that SciFi Channel will be cancelling SG-1 (Please God NOOOO!) and replacing it with a Battlestar Galactica spinoff entitled Battlefield Caprica."
Its actually Battlefield Earth: The series, because the movie was such a huge success.
Joe, I don't suppose that you could give us a little hint about dark Daniel in season 10, the controversial story arc for Daniel(that according to you won't destroy his character) or how long or often Daniel will be in Atlantis. Anything that you could tell us would be greatly appreciated. BTW I am really looking forward to season 10. Take care and thanks for blogging.
Joe,
Please, PLEASE don't bring the SG-1 characters to Atlantis. Atlantis has tons of great characters of its own. The only thing that was better about season one was that Atlantis was cut off from Earth. I know it's just my opinion, but i do feel strongly about this. the more isolated atlantis is from sg1 the better.

Hahaha. So this info is just a load of lies? It's hard to tell seeing that it's buried among a lot of factual info.
"Carter does nothing but babysit the two children featured in those episodes, Orlin and Mitchell."
While we'd love nothing better than to have all four of our main characters share the screen equally in every episode we air, its just not going to happen. Sometimes, there will be episodes where Daniel may take center stage (ie. Origin), and other times there will be episodes where Mitchell will take center stage (Collateral Damage). As for 4th Horseman - you saw it as "Carter doing nothing but babysitting" while I and many others saw it as "Carter helping Orlin come up with a cure for the plague that was threatening to wipe out all life on Earth". Potato PotAto.
"I was curious if we will ever see Thor again or if he was retired with Rick? I know we have a new asgard but I still miss Thor and Michael doing the voice."
Nope. Thor is still out there. Right now, we're just rounding out our stable of Asgard.

Hmmmm...I always love to speculate on rumors...
If this has any validity AT ALL I wonder if this is the JMS project that's been hinted at in some of his latest posts. It's supposedly being shot in Vancouver and is a spin-off of a show currently in production. Battlefield Caprica would fit the bill.
I guess I have to wait to see what you think of Serenity. I'm a bit obsessed with that movie. I bet you couldn't tell. :-D
Anyways, I think that Ben did an absolutely wonderful job in Collateral Damage and it was a real pleasure to finally get some back story on Cameron which allowed me to get a bit of a better handle on the character. One question, was the bit with Cam killing the refugees just for use in this episode or is it going to come into play somewhere on down the line in another episode? I ask because it's such a huge thing and it would be interesting I think to see how it affects him (military decision, having to give orders under fire, etc.).
Thanks for blogging!
Joe, I have a question about Ripple Effect. At a convention Teryl said that there would be a scene between her character and Daniel that she really liked if the scene wasn't cut. Do you know if we will get to see that scene or if it might have been cut?
Joe Mallozzi said:

Look, Joe, I know you said that you almost never watch the final cut of any episode, but I've got to tell you that that's not how it played. In fact, Orlin's entire role in the episode was extremely marginalized by the fact taht he didn't cure anything. And Carter didn't help him at all. Sure, she asked if she could help, but the dialogue you wrote pretty much shut down that possibility.
Carter: "Anything I can do to help?"
Orlin: "You can keep me company."
Carter: "Give me the information, I'll finish the cure."
Orlin: "I have to do this alone."
Sorry, Carter did nothing, and you do know it. Coming on here and being disingenuous about the content of episodes is a pretty weak position to stand by. As for your professing that certain characters play bigger roles in certain episodes, I think that we all get that. That is how the show has always been. The complaint that many fans have is that lately, this season in especial, one or more of the characters is completely wallpapered in order to highlight a different one. That was never the case in previous seasons. All your arguments serve to do is hammer home the fact that you don't know how to write team episodes anymore.

Firstly, Joe, ta muchly for putting an end to the petty whining about actors.
Secondly, I'm dying to see Ripple Effect, or, as I've dubbed it, Raspberry Ripple Effect. Shame it doesn't air til Tuesday over here, but I've cancelled the debating coaching I run to stay in and watch this one. I can't really see how it can be a bad episode.
Lastly, I'm not sure I understand a lot of fan reactions to character development (or lack thereof). You have four new characters to explore, and, in order to get them established, there needs to be some allowance for that.
Although I have a few little niggles (doesn't everyone), I can't complain too much about the season so far.
As for DVDs, I'm a Little Britain fan (very daft British comedy) and have also been watching Der Untergang again for a German project, a really fascinating account of Hitler's last days, which I fully recommend.
Jm said"While we'd love nothing better than to have all four of our main characters share the screen equally in every episode we air, its just not going to happen. so Joe when is Carter's centric episode due out for S9?
Oh and for the record Babysitter aptly describes wht you guys have done to Lt. Colonel Carter (and in some ways Daniel and Teal'c). Come on Joe don't say anything if you can never admit that you guys have made a mistake or fallen off the track. Making some of the lead characters (the ones a huge number of people actually tune in to watch because that is who the longer than 1-2 season Stargate fans are invested in) into wall huggers is a mess for you. People hope to see them doing something substantive that actually contributes to the arc of the show, besides of course holding up the doors and the walls and clasping their hands in front of them.
BTW - your big new shiny star got you a 1.7 - congrats on that!
Dwayne Kinson (Pac. Pal. Ca.)
Joe, please resist Skiffy interference at all costs! Scifi only ruins shows. End of story.
Well, at least one or two of those characters will play a big role in season 10. Anyone wanna bet on who those characters are?
Joe...
Would love to hear about the cut scenes you teased us about!
Further, still giddy over RIPPLE EFFECT...I can't wait and I have less than 24 hours. It's like the Beachhead Carter return countdown all over again times fifteen *giggles*.
Thanks for saying you skip actor bashing posts. Maybe they'll stop now. (Let me enjoy my naivety for a brief moment.)
Did you get to see Noises Off? And more importantly, did you try my casserole?!???
Thanks for not giving up on us...

:D
Joe,
Will the characters of Carter, Mitchell, Daniel, Teal'c and Vala all play major roles in season 10 of SG-1?
Thanks for your time.
Joe,
I'm not sure who Carl is but if he thinks "Camelot" is the best episode of Sg-1 he's ever seen, then I must assume he's never seen any of the episodes from the early years (Fifth Race, Forever in a Day, Menace, Crystal Skull, Maternal Instinct, etc., etc.). I bet old Mitch will get to take out the sword again for Camelot, hey?
Ya see, Joe you just should't talk like that. Now folks are going to be expecting great things from "Camelot," watching it with a discerning and critical eye and I gotta think it just won't meet expectations. If you'd said nothing, and just let yourself be the master of underestimationedness, like Bush, then everyone would think you were great.
Joey, joey, joey, what *are* we gonna do wid ya?
Agatha
Joe, you may have missed this (and maybe you ignored it) but I am going to try again:
Can you tell us if Colonel Carter will continue to be a major character in S10 like you said Vala would be? From what you said it sounds like at least 11 episodes are written or at least sketched out (broken?) and you should have an idea of what is going on with the group, including Sam Carter and what type of role she will have on SG1. Will it be substantive and contributory, will she have a reason to be there (I found it disturbing how in the 4HM2 and CD she was basically a glorifed baby-sitter (as so many others have pointed out) who stood around a lot but did not contribute anything susbtantive at all to the team or to the show (in CD the same was true of Daniel and Teal'c but at least at other times during this season they have contributed substantively to the story and the team - Sam Carter has yet to be treated that same way and here's hoping that changes with RE this week and then beyond through the remainder of S9 considering her import and contribution and history with the show and the team).
Thank you very much for your thoughtful reply.
Suzanne Pettis (SG1TeamFan)
Well, I've already seen Critical Mass, since I'm in Canada, and I got to say it was awesome! The whole thing flowed very smoothly, and the crossovers were well done.
And of course, Rachel sang beautifully, and created some of the most memorable scenes in Stargate history. Bravo!
Can't wait for Ripple Effect!!

Joe, thank you so much for answering my question about Thor. I really enjoyed Collateral Damage. Ben did a great job. Next time you talk to Michael tell him that Tatiana was adorable in the episode. It sounds like you have been really busy with scripts for next season. I'm really looking forward to the Daniel/Carter scene that you told us about in episode 2. Thanks for taking the time to blog and answer questions from the fans.
I've seen Critical Mass (Go TMN!) and it was great. Atlantis has been really impressing me this season. A lot more original story lines, and the Vis FX continually amaze me.
So excited for Ripple Effect! I'll probably comment again after I've seen it. I've been waiting all season to see this epi ever since I read some spoilers/teasers.
As for Camelot being the best episode...well it's got tough competition (Threads, Heros (1 and 2), Fifth Race, Lost City) but I'm sure it'll be kickass :)
Oh, and Joe, I'm not sure I'm asking the right person, but who would I contact/where would I go to get my extended version of Threads for S8 dvd boxset? There was some info on gateworld but it was only applicable to US citizens. Any ideas?
Joe,
I hope I'm not disappointed. I'm really hoping we might see Thor in "Ripple Effect." If Jack can't be there, Thor would be the next best thing, 'cause contrary to what other people might think they know, contrary to the little hints you've thrown out, I just know that Jack is with Thor on some secret mission somewhere.

Thanks for the update, and yes, you should skip the pointless bashing.
I am especially intrigued by the SGA ep "The Begotten." If that's the same ep you mentioned before that has Beckett in it, and if I assume that the "trapped in an asylum when the inmates take over" thing is a metaphor...well, maybe I am trying too hard. ;-)

No offense Joe, but Carl wrote the swiss cheese that is the Hive, and you think The Ties That Bind was a great stargate episode. So,I'm gonna take that whole "top ten episode" bit for Camelot with a big, big slab of salt.
Just out of curiosity, what are the other nine eps in your Top Ten? Looking for some context here.
Man, do I miss RDA. This new guy just feels so flat.

Good one, heh, heh. I'm with *you.*
Joe-
I just thought you would like to know that Late Night with Conan O'Brien just aired a skit that included SG-1. They were showing January "previews" of popular TV Shows. For SG-1, Conan said that the clip showed "two leaders of the jaffa race" contacting an alien. It showed a clip of Teal'c and Bratac on a Goauld Mothership. They both look at the viewscreen as it activates and it is George W. Bush. It was pretty funny.
Joe--
I love how the writers have stepped up the Asgard presence a little. Hermiod is pretty funny. Any chance of making him or other Asguards more permanent characters on SG-1, Atlantis, or spin-offs in the future?
Dang it! That would have been HIlarious!
Hey Joe,
I asked you this in your questions thread, but I was just wondering if you'll have any moments between Teal'c, Daniel and Sam that kinda goes back to the early days. This request isn't really a slam against the new season (though I have had my beefs), it's just that these three haven't really had many moments together. I mean, they've been together, but it's typically been to move the story along. Will we get anymore pre-season nine moments between these three character next season?
Thanks for stickin' around.

Oh my god! You started on Cromartie High School? That's awesome, I've been suggesting it to you in the Comment Box for months!
Wow, this is the first time I've REALLY thought that you guys pay attention to our comments.

You know what Joe? I can save you some time on this one. You guys can stop thinking about writing the episode and I bring you my Atlantis script which quite corresponds to the description! And, what a coincidence, it's a two-parter!
I can be at the Bridge first time tomorrow morning. Tell Brad and Rob to be ready. I bring the nutella!

Hello Joe,
I was recently watching Redmption Pt.2 again and I have got to ask you something. Repli-Carter discovers when she probes Daniel's mind that he has according to her, a vast amount of Ancient knowledge in his subconscious. So I'm frankly a bit stunned that the writers haven't taken advantage of this gold mine of information and written any stories where 1) bad guys such as the NID or the TRUST kidnap him to get at the information or 2) Daniel is somehow able to briefly use some of those Ancient powers to save someone. Come on. You KNOW we want to see some of those Ancient powers.LOL
Also I keep waiting for another great meaty, angst-filled, emotional episode to be written for Michael Shanks. You guys all know that he in incredible in those eps like "Lifeboat" and "Legacy" and "Crystal Skull". So are we going to get any more eps along these lines in S10?
I think one of the vital componants that is missing from the show in the emotion. Fans want to see the characters getting angry, feeling scared, laughing, crying. We want to be touched emotionally when we watch a show. So what do you think Joe. Any tug-at-your-heartstring episodes on the horizen, especially for us Daniel fans?
Kath from Indiana
**I think one of the vital componants that is missing from the show in the emotion. Fans want to see the characters getting angry, feeling scared, laughing, crying. We want to be touched emotionally when we watch a show.**
I love those episodes too, but isn't that just what we've seen with Mitchell in Collateral Damage?
Loved this episode btw. Joe... Thanks for the insight into Mitchell the man and his relationship with his father that made him the character he is today :)
Kas
So just to clarify: Mitchell is a threat to Carter because he has been placed as head of the team instead of her.
: Vala is a threat to Carter because she is a woman and might detract from Amanda's screen time.
: Daniel is a threat to Carter, because he ??????????????????? is played by Michael Shanks???????????????
Is ther anybody besides Teal'c/ Walter or Chaka that isn't going to be an object of hatred by Amanda's fans??
P.S: substitute "Carter should lead SG1 instead of Mitchell" with: "Amanda should be the NEW STAR of the show instead of Ben" and that is what both Amanda and her fans are really trying to say.
Maybe she should have gone off and joined the cast of WHISTLER and have found her true home, instead of calling the production office at SG1 sexual discriminators, and then expecting a Fu***** job in return. Wake up people, she's PLAYING YOU
I think that Stargate SG-1 is now better than ever before, because all episodes connect to the main events (like BSG). The Atlantis Season 3 should be written so too, because the "old" (means S1-S8) SG-1 style isn't enough for the fans now. We need more character development, more intresting two-partners and not only action and CGI wars. :)
So just to clarify: Mitchell is a threat to Carter because he has been placed as head of the team instead of her.
: Vala is a threat to Carter because she is a woman and might detract from Amanda's screen time.

(cut for other crap that was posted)
wtf............ dude, get a clue. oh wait, that would require more brain cells than you presently require.
Collateral Damage was an emotional episode for Mitchell but that doesn't mean that we don't need episodes like that for the other characters too. I agree with the above poster that the emotional episodes are some of my favorites. I would love to have another really good emotional episode for Daniel too. I would love a really good Sam and Daniel angsty episode that reminds us what good friends Daniel and Sam really are. I think the last time we got a Sam and Daniel hug was in Forever In A Day in season 3. I really miss the onscreen friendship(brother/sister relationship) that Sam and Daniel share that goes back to season 1. Considering that Amanda has referred to herself and Michael as "kissing cousins" and Michael has referred to Amanda as a "big sister" I know they would do a beautiful job if given the chance. I just wish they were given the chance. Maybe in season 10.
Salut Mister Mallozzi, je me demandais juste si vous parliez le francais vu que je sais que vous venez du Québec! This season of both shows has been great so far. I can't wait for tonights eps. From the spoilers and info you have given, they look to be the best so far! Also, from what little info has been given on next season, it looks to be even better than this one. You guys are doing a great job! Keep it up.
One worry that I am having is about the Friday night line up. SciFi has announced that Dr. Who is going to be taking the 9pm slot (Atlantis's slot) as of March.(I'm assuming that this will be after the end of the season.) Do you guys have any info on why they are doing this? There have been loads of negative feed back from fans about the change in the line up. We are not against bringing Dr. Who to SciFi, just against it being in a Stargate slot.
Anyway, any information you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

'While we'd love nothing better than to have all four of our main characters share the screen equally in every episode we air, its just not going to happen.'
Fallacy of false dichotomy. Unfortunately, that's the way the scripts have been going. For example, Judge went from 35% of the main characters' lines in one ep to 5% the next (figures are for illustration only; NO, I haven't counted lines). So, yeah, while his overall average may be up (thankfully), the ping-ponging feast-or-famine also has increased.
'As for 4th Horseman - you saw it as "Carter doing nothing but babysitting" while I and many others saw it as "Carter helping Orlin come up with a cure for the plague that was threatening to wipe out all life on Earth". Potato PotAto.'
More like 'potato, cauliflower'. Sorry, JoeM, but Carter didn't do diddly-squat in 4H2, and she was only slightly more efficacious in Collateral Damage. Offering words of comfort is NOT substantive, plot-forwarding action. When a main character 'monitors' a situation, surely that should mean something more than 'stand there and look worried' -- especially when said character is a tech qenius who also has had more than her fair share of experiences with Goa'uld/Tok'Ra memory devices.

Hiya Joe,
I came here cos I heard you wrote Collateral Damage, and since I thought it was the best standalone ep in years I'd like to say a big THANK YOU. It was a simple and straightforward story, but the details contained a lot of hidden brilliance. The thing of how a person's memory makes the person who they are and ending with the murderer making himself innocent by slicing the murder from his own brain was compelling. And I liked the sinister undertone that is there upon rewatching, aware that however much of the truth the government know they'll do sweet naff all about it cos it's not expedient to act.
BB got a chance to stretch himself, and the writing of the other roles put me in mind of 'Fallout' where you achieved the same deal with writing very small parts for certain characters and yet giving them interesting, weighty and in-character lines so that their presence in the 42 minutes appears far greater than a totting-up of talk-time would imply. It definitely felt like a TEAM ep.
I'm greatly enjoying s9 so far. Teal'c and Daniel, my favourite characters, have had plenty of good story, and I think Sam, Vala and Cam have also all been great to watch. Again: THANK YOU.
Madeleine

OH...And I'm looking forward to Ripple Effect, I seem to be LMAO every time the sci fi promo plays Carter sayin' "I got nothin'....yet!" I'm excited to see it!
Hey Joe, can't wait for Ripple Effect. I've been looking forward to this one since the very first tidbits were released. Hope it's every bit as good as it sounds like it'll be.
On another note, I enjoyed "Horsemen I & II" overall. The second part not quite as well as the first, I'm afraid. The idea was fabulous. The acting was great. And I had no problems with Carter's role, per se. But... if you don't mind a tiny bit of (hopefully constructive) criticism, I also thought that the episode featured too much "telling" us what was going on, and not enough "showing" us. I'm not speaking of the visual-effects sort of showing us, either. I'm speaking of actual details, more than "we're looking for a cure; we found a cure".
For example, one of the things you said was: "I and many others saw it as "Carter helping Orlin come up with a cure for the plague that was threatening to wipe out all life on Earth".
I saw that you wanted that to be the role Carter took in the episode, and it was understood via the exposition, but we didn't actually get to see what Orlin was trying to do, or to really understand his role in making it happen. We didn't get to care how difficult it was (from a technical or scientific point of view) with respect to Carter, either. Carter did play some very nice emotional support to Orlin, which was touching, but as a viewer, I don't think your narrative was strong enough in terms of its ability to capture the core conflict. It skipped around to too many diverse points of focus. The idea was huge; the story timeline didn't seem adequete to accomodate it. It was a race against time; but it didn't feel that way. And I think, if I may be so bold, it could have been a lot more powerful.
Anyhow, with absolutely no malice intended, I hope you don't mind my saying so.
Best,
minigeek
Just in case you don't speak Quebecois
"Salut Mister Mallozzi, je me demandais juste si vous parliez le francais vu que je sais que vous venez du Québec! En tk chu ben fier de ca pour Stargate, je peux dire qu'un Québécois est dans la production:P Encore beau travail! Et comme on dit par ici, on s'en criss des chialeux, yen aura toujours :D
Martin"
I was just wondering if you spoke French cos I know that you come from Quebec. I'm really proud that I can say that Stargate has someone from Quebec on the production team. Anyway, lovely work, yet again, and, as we say here, let's cross our fingers that there'll be more.
(I hope that's pretty much right. There was one sentence where he used Quebec net speak, not something I've come accross much)
Disenchanted Gater said: It refers to the fact that in the last two episodes we've seen (both scripted by one Joe Mallozzi), Carter does nothing but babysit the two children featured in those episodes, Orlin and Mitchell.
I've read some spoilers for the rest of S9 and you should be pleased to know that there seems to be a more even division of team members' contributions.
Do you read them? Skip over this post if you want to remain spoiler free.
S9 SPOILERS FOR SAM CARTER:

Carter is supposed to save the day in "Ripple Effect" and "Off the Grid". She's part of the team searching for Teal'c in "Stronghold" (I think she gets to play soldier Sam). She coordinates the search and rescue for Daniel, it appears by spoiler pics, in "Ethon". She's said to have some nice scenes in "The Scourge" which Joe has said made a very good team ep, and she's with Mitchell in another dimension in "Arthur's Mantle". She's in "Crusade" more than Daniel or his actor, apparently, and is part of the big battle in "Camelot", where she also gets to explore and get techy.
I'd say that Carter's not babysitting in the rest of the S9.

i stopped watching cromarcie high school after the first episode so good luck.
Very good job on the season so far, it has been really entertaining, collateral damage was a very enjoyable classic scifi episode with a surprising twist.
Nice to hear about DVD commentaries for ripple effect.
When do we get a gary jones episode at the research of the lost chevron ? hehe.
hi, i just want to say that ive heard rumers that the 200th episodes might have the furlings in it. Plz Plz Plz make it so. So when your spinning stories for the landmark episode could you mabye bat the idea around the table. i feel that the 200th episode is a special one and what would make it more special for the fans if had the elusive/evasive furlings in it. Just a thought....
Wake up people, she's PLAYING YOU
This is why kids from Brazil shouldn't sbiff glue.
*sniff*
Thank you for taking the time to write this and make awesome TV. Hopefully we will see stargate for season 20.
Joe, please write Jack into the 200th episode!
Saw "Critical Mass", one of my favorite Atlantis episodes yet! Seems like it could have been split up into two and used as a season finale.

The sentence from anonymous French guy (or gal) was written in good old pure laine (died in the wool) Joale (slang) "Et comme on dit par ici, on s'en criss des chialeux, yen aura toujours :D"
Which, when translated, means " Like we say around here, to hell with whiners, there's always some hanging around"
Now you've got the whole message.
Of course, if you were from Quebec, you probably know all that

besides you leaving out the reasons and wherefores... amanda never said these things. her fans never said these things. this isn't a black and white situation. where do you get this stuff?

Joe,
Your so great at telling us without telling us... keep up the great work! :)
JOE! I LOVED Ripple Effect. Had me in stitches most of the episode. Of course, a friend suggested that an Evil-Carter should have a mustache, but he's messed in the head. I'm just wondering.. two realities she's married.. but to WHOM? *boggle*
Hey Joe.
Been getting live spoilers via MSN, and I'm so glad that I cancelled the debating class I run. I can barely wait.
Just out of interest, who did you intend the husband and father to be? Jack or Pete?
And the almost-kiss was that Sam or Jolinar's feelings?
Very Excited Brit

Joe, this episode was FANTASTIC!! Thankyou from the bottom of my SG-1 loving heart for that utterly great episode!!!!!! The only thing I would've liked to see (other than the deleted scenes that were just released) would have been Jack (on the base for some unbeknownst reason as usual) to walk into the room with the 20 Carters-it would have been too funny, but I understand why that couldn't happen. Very sneaky with the omission of who Sam was married to/having a baby with, very sneaky indeed--I'm just going to take it how I want to even if that's not the way you intended. AND the line about seeing Janet soon/again...PLEASE make it come true, we miss our Janet (even if she was from an alternate reality!). Thanks again, and if you happen to see anyone who worked on the show, tell them all what a great job EVERYONE did!!
Joe-
Ripple Effect--great episode. My favorite scene, the room full of Carters...classic. I had to watch the scene several times, as I kept missing the dialog because I was watching the background Carters interact with each other. Amanda rocks! Great acting all around. It looked like everyone was having a good time. Loved the Sam/Janet moment at the end. Reminds me of how much I miss the character. Martouf looked hot, hot, hot! I groaned at the interepted kiss. Awesome beats, though. This episode will become one of my favorites. Suzi
Now that's what I'm talking about - A TEAM Episode...! (albeit 13 teams may be a little excessive every week).
Nice to see another Janet and Martouf... oh and those Calvins.
Loved the missing scenes too - too bad they had to be trimmed.
Looking forward to the Ba'al and Teal'c throwdown next week. Thanks!
Both Episodes to night were very good. I even like Atlantis better than SG1, which is the first time that has happened for me. I'm glad I decided to stear clear of major spoilers this season. Did not see the twist on Atlantis coming. (won't spoil it for others)
As for SG1, loved the way Mitchel did a mind job on himself at the end. lol
Speaking of Critical Mass:
PLEASE PLEASE tell me Mitch Pileggi will be returning as Colonel Caldwell. I've been hoping he'd be made a series regular because he has brought such strength to the role. I was delighted when he joined Atlantis and I just can't see it without him now.
Caldwell will be okay, and the Daedalus will fly under his command again.
Yes?
You are well loved in our household right now. Critical Mass was well recieved.
Serenity is a great movie! If you've seen Firefly or not, it will truely be an adventure. Hope you and Paul enjoy it.

yeah Caldwell will be back.
remeber at the end of the ep. mackays says hermoid is beaming out the gouled from his head.
you see him in the
THE LONG GOODBYE
Joe - best parrt of this ep was Carter, Carter, Carter, Carter and JANET. More Janet and Carter time would have been better - fans saw them as best friends and spending some quality time on them (just a few additional minutes) would have made this a 4/5 instead of a 3/5, especially since Janet has been all but ignored since S7 Heroes 2 and nary a mention by anyone, tsk, tsk on that. Carter Carter Carter and more Carter for S9.
Karen C.
Joe,
Loved Ripple Effect, but wished it was extended (like Threads), so that you didn't have to delete those scenes. Since they were already shot, any chance that they will appear on a future DVD?
It was great seeing Janet and Martouf. Please bring Janet back!
Anita
Some of the comments above touch on various character support in SG1 lately. To be honest, It does seem like there is a discomfort either between the actors or the writers. The show is changing, a new lead, a new big bad and I believe that is a good thing. However, the chemistry on the team needs to be adjusted. There have been far too many awkward moments with Teal'c, Carter and Daniel lately. The show has a good and long future, but the diehards have to be willing to flex and allow cast changes to happen. It feels like TPTB are trying to please everyone and making everyone feel a little uncomfortable.
Overall, I liked Ripple Effect. One of my Fav eps this season, however, someone needs to do something about Carter's hair.
Critical Mass - I love SGA. They have a wonderful chemistry and I really enjoy their adventures. I do believe, the Wraith were a poor choice for an initial/primary big bad and the Atlantis mission doesn't seem to be as fleshed out as the original SG1 mission (find new technologies to protect Earth from the Goa'uld.) The series feels like it has been painted into a corner.
I'm looking forward to another Big Bad next season and hopefully a larger and stronger mythology to go with the series.
Keep up the great work! I enjoy the blog and the insight into the production process.

Thanks so much Joe for giving us that closure between the team and Janet, especially between Janet and Daniel. That was so welcome and heartwarming.
Great episode, a lot of fun with clever twists and great one-liners ("I miss Thor"). A bit heavy on the technobabble; I was willing to believe without all the reasoning :) but the interactions were great. Lam was sweet this time, too.
And thanks so much for leaving it open who the other Carters ended up with. If Jack had been named I would have ralphed.
Critical Mass was good as well though it seemed a cheat that Caldwell didn't act at all strangely the whole ep... Also I thought the singing only barely managed to avoid 'cheese' territory; Rachel's voice is lovely.
Hi Joe, I enjoyed Ripple Effect. My favorite scenes were the ones with Daniel and Janet. It was good to see the two of them together after what happened in Heroes. I'm curious who decides which scenes to delete. Is it the writer or whoever edits. I would have loved the scene between Daniel and Mitchell where Daniel talks about his wife. The fact that she is still alive in another reality was a great idea. Thank you for posting the deleted scenes though. BTW my favorite line in the episode was when Daniel said "I miss Thor". Have a great weekend.
loved ripple effect. i'd like to see something with the " evil" sg1 again . keep up the good work. i look forward to the future episodes.
I just read your 'in the making' notes. Very interesting! I would have thought some of those scenes could have fit if some of the Carter technobabble had been shortened instead. No?
It did seem out of character for Black Daniel not to question what they were doing, so scene 54 would have been perfect and added a lot to the ep. I still felt very sorry for Black SG-1.
I love how PdL interpreted which relationship was being hinted at. No wonder he filmed Carter and Mitchell standing so close together. I wondered what was up with that!
OK JM...
Thanks for blogging, spending time in the forum and doing bts write ups!
I enjoyed the ep. I loved Sam using Jackism's. I enjoyed the reference to ST's Mirror Mirror. I enjoyed walking down path's not taken.
Being a shipper s/j shipper, I enjoyed the references to a possible future w/Jack...of course I hope that's what is meant, but alot would say to ambigious. Why is that? The thing that...speaking as a shipper did annoy me was the Green same leaning in for a kiss from Marty, when she has previously said she's "not exactly" single...Jack or no Jack. wtf?
But anyway, the Blue Jello was a hoot, as is My Sam comment by Landry.
Hubs said it was slow and that you could have had way more fun with it. And while I agree...perhaps you didn't get to have as much fun...because you ran out of time...as you said ep was running long...or you didn't want to have to worry about fan backlash when you went to far one way or another...as I remember your blog about the PC gift from Christmas...now that I've had my big run on sentence...
Thanks again for what you do - I enjoy it...even if I have my own opinion!
S
joe, will the sam/other ship ever stop?
why'd you have sam almost kiss martouf if she's supposed to love jack?
i'm not really expecting you to answer, but it's the only place i think you'll really see this since you barely play on your q/a thread and emailing is over.
sally :(
OH,
JM - I was kinda harsh in that last post...really I very much enjoyed Ripple Effect.
I think Critical Mass was very cool, that Kavanaugh is very annoying, Hubs guessed the twist...I was oblivious...
Nice Sci Fi Friday

Hi, Joe! Thought I'd tell you how much I enjoyed Ripple Effect, as well as your In the Making notes. Any chance of seeing these deleted scenes on the forthcoming dvd?
Loved Collateral Damage too. Just thought I'd mention it. Thanks for blogging. Have a great weekend.
It's a pity so many scenes involving Daniel were cut. Instead we got scene after scene of Carter and her love lives and her technobabble. Why?
Also I sure hope you're not introducing Carter/Mitchell ship. They sure were blocked together all the time again this week.
Joe, Although I enjoyed Ripple Effect, I was wandering why so many of the Daniel scenes were cut? It just seems like it would have been better to have a couple of those scenes instead of the scene with Our Sam getting ready to kiss Martouf(liplock I might add) when I thought that you weren't going to ship Sam anymore. If it had been an AU Sam it would have been different but it was OUR SAM. I just feel like that was an insult to S/J shippers. First Barrett then Orlin,Mckay,Martouf and it looks to me(just look at the blocking in Ripple Effect) that Cam is next. I just don't understand. Like I said, I would have enjoyed one of the cut Daniel scenes instead of a scene like that. After the scene in Avalon I thought you guys might be leaning towards Mitchell/Sam ship. You know the scene where Vala puts her arm around Mitchell and tells him he needs to play hard to get(after he had just talked to Sam). I guess I'm just disappointed. Thanks for listening.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU FOR THE CUT SCENES! My roommate, however, is currently feeling violated and washing out her eyes after read the Daniel/Mitchell scene. I, however, was greatly amused. This episode would have been completely kick ass with those scenes and I'll be looking forward to the DVD. Wish you would of said who Sam was with though. Like Jack, for instance. I know, I know, broken record but do you wonder if SG1 was at a new low last week due to Mitchell and no clear leadership and blah blah. Fans are not watching. I am though, and I did like this weeks. Also, love Atlantis. Always. I am liking it better then SG1 and this makes me sad.
Loved Ripple Effect - and Critical Mass was great... could have done without the singing :)
Wow - now Sam can't have feelings for someone other then Jack? Wow!
C'mon enjoy the episode, why oh why do people have to continually search for faults?
Well, I must say that "Ripple Effect" was the best episode done at all this season (I loved it!) I have to agree with the Anonymous fellow above. What's up with the ressurection of Sam Carter's love interests? They're DEAD (some literally and others figuratively, but we all know the difference there :P). And you're seriously sending mixed signals. If Martouf wasn't about to say "General O'Neill" when Sam asked who "her" husband was in Martouf's reality, I'll be a shoebox!! And the "not really" comment earlier in 1st half of the season with Agent Barrett? We're getting a little too shady here. Either there's ship or there isn't, what's with all the grey? I'll agree it was by far the best episode this season (and I'll agree it's not the best episode *ever* - not sure you can top Window of Opportunity). Good job. I'm getting so frustrated with Sam's current position. :l
Hey Mr. Mallozzi!
So far I've been feeling that Season 9 as a whole has been rather slow and cliched, but as soon as I saw previews coming up for Ripple Effect I knew I had to watch it. It is by far THE BEST episode that you and the writers have come up with this year. I loved seeing Janet again (I cried; it was so good to see her) and Martouf, whom I've missed dearly. Whoever came up with the idea of sticking 18 Carters in one room was a genius; I thought I was going to crack my funnybone. Overall, A+ doesn't even begin to describe it. I've been waiting for this episode for about two weeks and I was not dissapointed.
While I'm on the subject, I'll also inform you that Critical Mass is probably in my top favorites of Season 2 as well. Whoever wrote Teyla's funeral hymn must have been influenced by Celtic music, because that is what it reminded me of. It was a very exciting, very mysterious episode that kept me guessing up to the very end. I thought it might have been said evil person, but I had no idea that he was a Goa'uld..! Truthfully, I love the character, so knowing he was Goa'ulded means he'll be back, which is a relief.
Anyway, thanks for a great Friday Night, Mr. Mallozzi. I hope you can send us more episodes like them during the course of Seasons 10 and 3!
Thank you for giving us Martouf and Janet.
They were always my favorite 'secondary' characters and it would be such a pleasure to see them return again.
Oh, both of those episodes were awsome! Hillarious, riveting, just great! I was expecting Ripple Effect to be really good and was not disappointed. Loved the idea of the team having to outwit themselves. And the fact that the black team was pretty justifiable in their reasoning (if not completely) helped. I had to wonder if the real team wouldn’t go to nearly such lengths if it were them. Which, since it practically was them, is good. (Oh, but the beard/evil twin/Star Trek reference was fantastic.) It was great seeing some old faces, in both shows, but it would have been nice if Martouf and Fraser were utilized a little more. I love the new little Asgard guy. So funny. The scene with all the Carters was very interesting, and visually convincing. I couldn’t help but wonder what McKay would think if he walked in on that. And that Carter with the glasses eating in the background looked an awful lot like the one in Moebius.
Atlantis was great. The LOTR reference and the way the geeks immediately understood what he was saying was great. I love that nervous Deadalus woman; she's hillarious. Great to see Kavanagh back, even if he is an obnoxious jerk. Half-way through I thought Cadman might be the spy, but when McKay suggested it right after I knew I was wrong. You waited until the last moment to expose the spy, and it was a great revelation. Great having it be Caldwell. The song was interesting and had a great effect. That scene with Kavanagh seeing Ronan and freaking out was priceless. At least it proves the guy's not a complete idiot.
Read the deleted scenes. Too bad you didn’t put the “frell” thing in there. Maybe you can get it in later sometime. I love a good reference. Wish you guys could film the extra scenes anyway, if they’re good, just to put them in the DVD, which you could make longer if you wanted. It would have been cool to hear that there’s a world where Sha’re’s alive, and get a glimpse of how that might change things.
I really like the way the two shows are beginning to tie together more. Crossover characters, mentioning Atlantis on SG-1...it all really helps to make it seem like it really is the same world. I am constantly amazed that you guys can keep up the quality of these shows after going for so long. Brilliant.
Mr. Mallozzi,
I'm sure you are going to hear comments from both sides... the shippers will be upset because Sam almost kissed Martouf... the Martouf lover's will wish they had.(I'm in that camp)which isn't the point.
The point is that it was a great episode. I liked it even though I could have done without all the ship hints. What would have helped with that would have been to state difinitively that she was married to Jack in one, and Daniel, and Martouf, and Pete, and Rodney, and well you get my drift...that way ALL the ships would have been able to say that she was "with" their mate of choice. sigh. Anyway, even with the inevitable J/Ser's starting up again, it was great and seeing Martouf was the best part. I sincerely hope you will find some way to bring him back into our universe and therefore to the show, at least occasionally. He is truly missed by us.
I also enjoyed Critical Mass. It was good and I didn't mind watching the prometheus commander get shot, since I dislike that character. Mostly I enjoyed it as it was pretty Rodney heavy, and he is favorite in the Atlantis world just as Daniel and Sam are my favorites in the world of SG1. Again, thanks again, for a great SG1 episode this week and a very good Atlantis one.
if you meant 'one sam honeymooning and another living with someone and another on maternity leave' as for sam/jack, then THANK YOU.
but that 'almost' sam/martouf kiss was horrible. (that was OUR sam doing that)
almost ruined the 'maybe/possible' sam/jack stuff. :(
sally :/
What does it matter what Joe meant? See what you like and stop worrying about the writers validating it.
...
Hi Joe,
Since you asked what we think about RE, here it goes: I loved it, great episode, hilarious. Best episode this season, well done.
Great performances by everybody, but especially Amanda! Bravo!!!
Ripple Effect was a fantastic episode. The little shipper beats were really fun. I'm a shipper to some extent, I don't take it to extremes and say I'll never watch again if it doesn't happen, so those beats were just awesome :D
Seeing Martouf was a fantastic surprise. I had accidently read Janet would be back and was totally not expecting him. I never pay attention to the guest credits, so having Martouf walk in was just awesome.
Kudos on being the man behind the best season 9 episode yet!
Joe, I guess I'm with the fans that are trying to figure out why you cut so many of Daniel's scenes. The scene where Daniel is talking to Mitchell about Sha're and how he is still married to her and she is helping them would have been fantastic. It would have been nice to know what is going on in at least one of Daniel's other realities. There was also another scene cut that some fans said would have been really nice because it was the old Daniel that some fans have been really missing. We did learn that one Sam is married, one has a child, one is probably with Cam and our Sam is still in love with Martouf(which tells me that she can't be with Jack because Sam would never do that.) I did enjoy seeing Janet and Martouf again and loved the scenes between Daniel and Janet. Since you asked for our opinions I wanted to be honest. I hope that is O.K. BTW I am a big Sam fan, Daniel fan and team fan and am looking forward to the rest of the season.
Loved Ripple effect ... even some of the surprise twists, like the true intention of the black SG-1! And I really enjoyed seeing Martouf and Janet again.
Just for the record ... I'd love to see RDA/O'Neill again at some point, just as I enjoyed seeing Janet and Martouf ... but understand complications of scheduling, etc. I'm enjoying the "new" team, looking forward to the rest of S9 and to S10 ...
From: a happy SG fan!
"It refers to the fact that in the last two episodes we've seen (both scripted by one Joe Mallozzi), Carter does nothing but babysit the two children featured in those episodes, Orlin and Mitchell. What, did those scripts read "Carter glances at Orlin/Mitchell with sympathy and compassion" about 100 times? And it's not just a Carter thing. Carter's role in Fourth Horseman and Collateral Damage reminds me of the expectant father's in the delivery room: young daddy can't do the job himself, and might feel and look impotent; but being there sure is important to young mummy. He's emotional support during a very hard time, and he can go to bat for her if the chips are down.
The problem here is that it's difficult to *show* that sort of supportive role in an episode of TV. Unless we see the support role stepping up to bat vigorously, or leaping in to rescue the subject in a moment of acute despair, the audience isn't treated to that potential. Carter is important to Orlin's/Mitchell's efforts, but the audience may struggle to engage.
Mr. M. - thank you so much for "Ripple Effect" - that was a wonderful episode and goes into one of my top favs as well. How the heck are you folks gonna top this one? *LOL*
As for the Sam/Martouf thing, that didn't bother me, as long ago Sam sorta did have a "thing" for Martouf, so the "almost" kiss didn't seem out of place. Loved everything about this episode!
Hey Joe!
Watched "Ripple Effect" and "Critical Mass" last night.
Ripple Effect had a cool concept, but I would have liked more interaction with Alt-Daniel and Alt-Teal'c. The deleted Alt-Daniel scenes that you posted would have been wonderful to see on screen. Especially the reference to Sha're and Daniel's doubts about the mission.
I liked the ambiguity around the "ship". I've always liked the chemistry between Sam and Martouf. And all of the other references to Sam's love-life could have referred to relationships with Pete, Barrett, Felger, McKay or even, maybe Jack. That's the point of alternate realities... anything is possible. However, thank you for cutting the shippy stuff between Sam and Cam. No ship on teams please!
But the best part of the episode was seeing Janet. Her scenes with Daniel and Teal'c had me in tears. It almost made up for the mess made in Heroes. Loved her scene with Landry- reminded me of "Lifeboat"- Janet is very passionate and willing to fight for those she loves.
Absolutely loved "Critical Mass". I adore Hermiod. The Asgard have developed a sense of humor! Awesome! Loved the twist at the end. Never saw that coming and it was well played by all the actors. And, while I wasn't sure if I liked the use of Teyla's song in the episode, Rachel has an amazing voice. Very emotional and powerful.
Someone mentioned Furlings for the 200th episode. I would love that. Invite RDA, but if he can't make it, it's all good. I love the current team. Whatever happens, make it a team episode-- PLEASE?
Thanks again for blogging!
Jo M.
I really enjoyed both episodes last night, especially the new Asgard's personality.
I really enjoyed both episodes last night, especially the new Asgard's personality.
Thanks for two great episodes! And, thanks for the deleted scenes--would have loved to see all of those. One, however, would have made a big difference in how I looked at the black team. I didn't like them much, and the last deleted scene where they discussed the ethics of what they were doing would have made me more sympathtic to them.
Looking forward to many more wonderful eps!
This was good episode (RE that is) loved all the Carters and Janet (disappointed at the lack of Janet/Carter substance though) and loved having the real Cater back after so many lame episodes for that character.
I must say though that the Mitchell character is not growing on me. His unending stream of one-liners in this episode were bordering on obnoxious. I ended up fast forwarding through almost all of his scenes in the second half simply because I was sick of them.
Joe: you guys can do better than that. Those lines are Jack lines all the way (I would bet money you are still writing for Jack; can't you get out of the habit?) and if I closed my eyes it would be Jack (and no I am not a Jack lover, as a matter of fact I am used to his absence because he was never really a core entity in the show in S7 or S8, but it was nice to see him, so the fact he is gone does not spoil my enjoyment of the show (I liked the 3 man team), Mitchell's constant one-liners do spoil the show for me though because they are constant reminders of Jack and it makes him a mini-Jack, IMO.)
Terry V. (IwantmySG1 -- the BIG3, Sam/Daniel/Teal'c)
I loved both episodes last night! Great work. It was especially great to see Janet and Martouf again.
I do wish we could have seen those deleted scenes though. It's always the way. At the end when black Mitchell told him to cut the green one I was half wondering if he could be trusted or if he was bitter about not getting his ZPM. That wondering only lasted for a second though. All in all very entertaining. And I loved Zelenka at the end of Critical Mass. Of course there was a lot more to love about it than that...but it was nice to have a reason to smile.
Thanks for a good evening. :-)
Of course there was no mention of Jack in Ripple Effect... that would be like acknowledging he ever existed, which is something we don't do, right Joe?
Good episode though and did ya notice how people like it if it's about the characters?
Loved Ripple Effect, Joe. Best episode of the entire season for me. Great blend of humor I enjoy, drama and twists. Great to see Sam back to being science Sam and having a substantial role. AT did an excellent job. And everyone clicked in this one, IMO.
I hope we see more like this where things are clicking in the upcoming episodes. Nicely written. And looking forward to some team episodes (and some soldierSam!).

Joe, I was reading over your Q&A answers on G.W. and Solutions and you said that in a couple of weeks that you guys will be discussing the controversial story arc for Daniel. That leads me to believe that it will take place more towards the end of season 10. I guess I am just worried about what you are going to do to the character. I know you have said that it is a secret but I am wondering if Michael Knows. You also made the comment that the writers, producers not to mention Michael himself would not do anything to ruin the character of Daniel. It is my understanding that the actors don't know what is going on until they are handed the script and by then it is too late. Teryl didn't know that you guys were killing off Janet until she saw the script. Amanda stated just a few days ago in a chat that she's not sure what is going on with Sam for season 10. I remember Michael didn't even know that Ben was hired until he read it on the internet and I'll bet that if he didn't know than Amanda and Chris didn't know either. I guess I'm just curious if it is something major with any of the regulars do you pick up the phone and talk to them or are they handed the script and say "What the hell"
Loved Ripple Effect.. I think the best one of the season. It was nice to see Carter back to doing what she does best. This episode reminded me of old times, some of the great episodes of years past.
Hey Joe, congrats on two great episodes last night!
Ripple Effect was the first episode this season that I actually watched the second time around. It utilized the gate! It had science and technobabble! It had team interaction... and team interaction... and team interaction...! It had an interesting, engaging plot, and I wasn't able to predict everything that happened for a change. This ep made it worthwhile to stick with the show this year, and I thank you for it.
A couple comments though:
I haven't been on the forum yet to read other people's opinions, and it hasn't been mentioned on the blog so far, so this may just be me. But, I thought the Aunt Emma (aunt Em? Aunt somebody) scene between Black Mitchell and Green Mitchell was just... really, really odd. I realize you were trying to get the two characters to connect for plot purposes, but BB was almost playing it like he was drunk (I'm sure unintentionally, but that's how it came across to me... the description of Mitchell as a frat boy came to mind in full force), and I can't begin to tell you how bizarre the whole scene struck me... even more so the second time around. It made Mitchell appear really immature (hence the frat boy), and if you were going for funny, it didn't work for me. I liked Mitchell in the rest of the ep; this is the one thing that I really disliked about the whole ep.
Thanks too, for sharing the cut scenes with us. It's too bad the Cassie dialogue was cut, and I would rather have had the Black Daniel/Black Mitchell ethics discussion at the end than the Black Mitchell/Green Mitchell thigh-slapping, bits-of-bacon hanging-off-her-nose scene.
If you had to cut part of the Sam/Martouf scene, my preference would have been to keep the "I killed you" discussion and cut the interrupted kiss. I'm starting to think the Sam slammers are right in that you (collective) can't seem to write Sam as her own individual person, but instead have to write her as the romantic interest of whatever male character happens to be convenient for the episode. I'm a huge Sam fan, but I echo the requests to steer away from her love life for a while. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for cutting any ship scenes between Sam and Cam.
Love the Asgard... such personality from a puppet. What a great, wonderful job you do with them.
It was so very good to see Janet again. Part of me wishes you'd find a way to bring her back permanently.
As for Atlantis... I really, really like Novak. She's a character that's almost over the top, but I love her anyway, bless her geeky, sneezing heart. I hope you bring her back occasionally. Or even more than occasionally. :-)
I thought Teyla's singing worked very well; it was a beautiful song. I can see how some people might not like it, but I did... very much so.
I was also surprised by the ending, as were all the other 4 people with whom I watched, so kudos for a good plot twist.
All five of us agreed that it was the best night of Stargate so far this season. Thanks, Joe! Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Strix varia
NICE. Ripple Effect was great ~ and the "Rodney" of the Asgard ~ well done. I have been wondering what effect the humans might be having on the little gray people. Even Hermiod is gettin' sassy, telling Kavanagh to shut up!
Nice little mystery episode in Atlantis, we spent the all the commercial breaks trying to decide if the Goa'uld was the "hic-up" lady or Colonel Caldwell. Kavanagh was never our main suspect, though we did vote him the most likely to drive a Goa'uld to suicide...
Did Rachel actually do the vocals? If so, WOW.
Joe,
This episode totally rocked! Awesome, great, amazing, fill-in-the-adjective. Just fantastic.
Still, I must say that I am in the group that thinks Sam is a great character, and should be developed beyond her many suitors. :D
From the looks of things, it seems like this episode was kinda like Citizen Joe, Threads and Moebius - the kinds of eps where inside jokes, stories regarding past arcs, and peeks into "what might have been" were prevalent. I think that's great, and was a much-needed opportunity for both you and fans of ALL of the seasons. And for that, I think you did a great job.
But Martouf has been gone for five years. And, while I think it's neat that you brought him back for this episode, the quandry about Sam and Jack (a small facet of Sam's character) is still a relatively big problem for many long-time fans. You said that Sam wouldn't be "shipped" with anyone this season, but within an 8-episode span, Martouf (S4), Orlin (S5) and Barrett (S6) have all taken time out of the storyline to address their undying love for Sam. Again, Sam's a great character, but that's a bit... overboard. :) And the irony of it all is that the S/J ship, the very stuff you've spent eight years developing, was merely hinted at, and never really substantiated in an episode where you had the perfect opportunity - even if it was an AU. Very odd.
Overall, 12/10, though. Great episode, and I think the rest of the episodes are gonna be great too!

Wonderful, great post by Strix varia at 9:20 a.m. today. I wish Joe and the others would get a clue.

I loved "Ripple Effect" it was good to see old characters again. I wonder if the deleted scenes would be in the DVD release of season nine? *hint, hint* ;)
Hello Joe,
As a member of the Captain Video generation I enjoyed your writing in “Ripple Effect”. I come to the Stargate from a different perspective, though I enjoy the stories, the actors and their acting, but I come to be entertained only, which you do week in and week out. I do not even notice if one character gets more or less airtime or is somehow upstaged by another character in the show. But what I do notice is what I call “little signatures” they can be a line of text or just a small prop in a scene. The writer, the director or collaboration of the two of them or others such as the art director puts the “little signatures” into the scene. They are usually hilarious but unobtrusive and can be called the graffiti of the usually non-seen crew of the show. An example of this “little signatures” is the man who is almost always is carrying a very large wrench in the scene. Ware as others worry about relationships between the characters or that one character is being slighted over another, I look for the “little signatures”.
From my vantage point as a viewer of the show; that you and the director Peter DeLuise has unique and “special” senses of humor. When the two of you collaborate on an episode it will be one of those you will remember. Keep up the good work and thanks for the entertainment you produce for an old “Video Ranger”.
For you younger folks see http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/C/htmlC/captainvideo/captainvideo.htm
I liked Ripple Effect.
How come Peter DeLuise always gets to direct the funny episodes? Or does he just make them funny?
Anyways, this must have been the alternate_reality story to end all the alternate_reality stories in Stargate. At least for the next 70 episodes, until the next one :)
More Asgards. We still don't know how the Asgard think of humans in general. In one end of the exis, Thor things very enthusiastically, and Hermiod thinks we're "infants" in a derogatory sense. But variable personalities is a good thing. That not all Asgards are copies of each others, even when they physically are.
Seeing Janet Fraiser in this episode took me totally off guard. I would have never expected that. I understand how difficult it is to have old actors available for guest roles, but it worked very well and provided much value in this episode.
Directingwise, you've come very far since Tin Man or Double Jeopardy. Interactions between the same actor worked very seamlessly in this episode, even when greater numbers were present. (Of course, this is your blog and you weren't the one directing the episode, but I figure that this feedback will still go to right destinations eventually :) )
It's sad that in order to make the episode fit the ~40 minutes, you have to make decisions about cutting. But I'm glad that you decided to publish the script parts that didn't make the cut. For us fans, it's very interesting to read them even as text.
Keep up the good work! It's fantastic that you have already got the green light for the tenth SG-1 season.
Okay, I knew I should have clicked the "preview" button one more time. Errata: exis=axis, things=thinks. Sorry about that.
Hey Joe,
I'm making the rounds as far as Ripple Effect goes, and since you asked so nicely for us to tell you what we thought, here's my two cents.
I really, really liked it. It was a great episode and easily the best of the season thus far. I miss Frasier far more after this one than I ever expected to, especially considering that I haven't had much of a problem with Lam. I liked the story, liked how there wasn't an enemy to worry about, liked how some of the science that the show used so often in earlier seasons was incorporated again. It felt like Stargate, and that's something that hasn't been happening in season nine.
So, again, I liked it a lot. All that said, the whole Sam/Martouf not-kiss thing is just about the most whacked-out, incongruous thing you could have put in the story. If you do read this comment then I implore you to give us a little insight into what on Earth you were thinking with this scene. It is truly a bizzarre thing to have written, especially given the way you've mostly tied up the Sam/Jack angle.
Speaking of the Sam/Jack angle, I must say that the whole affair is rather tiresome at this point. Where is the difficulty in resolving this thing one way or the other? It's gotten to the point now where I'm inwardly cringing everytime Sam is alone in a room with a man. I feel that TPTB have sold the extremely modest resolution to this arc that you achieved in season eight down the river for a bunch of cheap, meaningless encounters with The Many Loves of Sam Carter. Barrett, Orlin, Martouf, McKay next week--what gives? I thought the show and Carter in particular was supposed to be ship-free this year?
Anyway, I liked Ripple Effect a hell of a lot. I just wish you'd chosen to keep the Cassie scene in and left the Martouf scene out. Where are your priorities? You picked shallowness over depth, and the episode is the worser for it. But I commend you for a fine episode and for giving this ever less interested fan something to be excited about again.

I want to add my vote to seeing the deleted Ripple Effects scenes as a Season 9 DVD add-on. The cut scenese give a totally different perspective to what was aired.
Very good episode. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Seeing Martouf walk into a room of 18 Carters had to have been a dream come true for him. :)
Also, bravo on getting the actor for Pilot to do the voice of the Asgard.
pettygrew
I don't know what Joe was thinking, but for all of you who don't understand..its not uncommon for feelings you have toward a person, even though they are not still in your life, to continue. With Sam and Martouf it was an attraction. You don't have weeks to set up a scene in an episode, you have minutes, so maybe it was a little rushed. Those "not OUR Sam comments are bunk. If you take the character as being played as "real", then real people deal with lots of mixed feelings. Not everyone has had more than one "love", but many have.
I think I just stepped over the line and got way more invested in these blog entries than is healthy :)
I'm joining the chorus asking for deleted scenes from Ripple Effect (great episode, btw!) on DVD. P L E A S E!!!
well thanks ChrisU for those insightful comments. Next time you think anyone gives two shits as to what you think, remember that acting high and might only results in you looking like a real ass. Condesending and superior are the adjectives that describe you best. Now go crawl back under that rock of yours and keep your "insights" to yourself. Loser.
Ripple Effect was deffinately the best yet this season!! Fantastic job! I couldn't believe it when Martouf was there! I still think it would've been good to see a room full of Jacks. Heck, the whole episode could've been about a room full of Jacks. Oh well.
Critical Mass was good too. Good to see Cadman back again.
To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of Atlantis until recently, but now I'm hooked and CM was exemplary of why.
As for Ripple Effect, I rather adored it - I was disappointed in places, but only because I'd been so utterly excited to the point that a little disappointment was inevitable, I guess (mostly, I wanted a bit more Janet and Martouf, but time restraints are a pain). I adored seeing Janet again (Teryl looked lovely, as always) and Martouf, a character I really wish hadn't had to go so early on. I know many disagree with this sentiment, but I honestly thought his interaction with Sam (and, in fact, the rest of SG-1) was always interesting. Kind've wish there was a way to bring him back, but this was the next best thing! The acting was great and the many Sam Carters was quite amusing!
Great ep and thanks for sharing the deleted scenes!
-Petra
Joe, was the Martouf/Sam thing supposed to be a Jolinar flashback or what? I thought Sam was with Jack but now don't because if she was she would not kiss someone else? Help me understand. plz.

What exactly in my post was so offensive to bring that response?
You've never heard of someone having feelings for more than one person? Someone else want to enlighten me, because the responder is probably still spitting vile.
Yeah, I agree with what the others posted: at least half of the Samantha's love affairs stuff should have been cut off and replaced with something that now didn't make the cut, like the Cassie part.

I totally, totally agree with this post.. please resolve it and soon.
The really sad thing about all of this is in your “Missing scenes feature”:
“Apparently, Peter had assumed that the references to AU Mitchell's dinner at the Hunan House(which didn't make the cut), AU Carter's pregnancy and honeymoon, all pointed to the fact that these two were "an item." An interesting interpretation I'd never thought of -- but not the one intended.”
Now most people who have watched or been involved the show for the past eight would probably assume the references were to Jack. Why would Peter think Sam/Cam were “an item” unless he was aware of future stories where they are an item.
God help us all..
and Jack .. run, don't walk, to the nearest exit on this relationship with Sam..
and Amanda.. why do you let them do this to your character.
I loved both Ripple Effect and Critical Mass. nice to see Janet again.
too bad some scences got taken out cause of time. Keep up the good work. Lookin forward to the finales...just not the long wait for the end of the cliffhangers after
A scene about Daniel talking about his wife Sha're still being alive on Abydos and it was cut? A scene about Cassie? A scene with black BDU Daniel questioning what they were doing? I know the show ran over but I can think of other scenes that could have been cut. To me, Sha're and Cassie and Daniel being Daniel (which I think would have added a nice touch to the evil team) are more important than two Mitchells yucking it up in the cafeteria and Mitchell in his underwear. I know some people would rather see Mitchell in his underwear then hear about Sha're or Cassie - But not me!
I didn't think I was much of a shipper kind of person, I could take it or leave it, but hell, you're shipping Sam with so many guys this season that it's +making+ me a Sam/Jack shipper! What's up with that, Joe? Jeez, give the woman some dignity and let her be with ONE guy at a time-which I thought was Jack since she dumped that boring bumpkin for him to begin with.
Knock off the Sam screws the universe shit!
But Martouf has been gone for five years. You forgot Mckay {Grace Under Pressure.}
Sam's a busy bee this season.

"Joe, was the Martouf/Sam thing supposed to be a Jolinar flashback or what? I thought Sam was with Jack but now don't because if she was she would not kiss someone else? Help me understand. plz."
Ah come on guys don't you get it? The writers are totally scewing you shippers over! Buy a clue! Theyre probably going to bring Pete back now too. Look, do you see the writers giving you guys the finger? Look closely!
BrB
Look, Joe, buddy. I have been a detractor of the Sam/Jack ship for years. I've maligned it, ragged about it, hated it. But enough is enough with the Sam/Other crap. At this point, can't you guys just come out, say she's with Jack, and let it be? It's obvious to everyone with a clue that no matter what else you do, you always intend for Sam/Jack to win out. Fine. But enough already with the constant flow of admirers. The Martouf bit was just really sad writing. At this point, I just want both Sam and Jack to be happy. If that means they're together, then so be it. I guess I'm converted. Right now, I'm actually prefering Sam/Jack to anything else.
This season I've felt bad for all the original actors, but Amanda Tapping has really been given nothing to work with. She's done great with Carter considering what's been written. However, not even her considerable talents can continue to make up for the constant male adoration Sam is getting. It's just bad, weak writing. And you're proving everyone's criticisms of you correct.

THIS IS A GREAT POST AND GREAT POINTS AND I AGREE 10000%. What exactly do TPTB think that so much shallow crap gets into the show at the expense of what is really and truly Stargate SG1 scenes? IT is phenominally hard to understand where these PTB have their heads these days.
Justin
MUCH PROPS Joe! Loved Ripple Effect. One of the best this season. And not just because Teryl and JR came back!
Can't wait to see deleted scenes and "making of". This episode looked killer to shoot and piece together.
Loved how you messed with shippers minds (but we all know it's S/J :P)
I've been hearing rumours that there was a scene where there was some Sam/Cam ship... but you cut it. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
The last thing AT/Sam haters need is fuel for the fire in saying she's a tramp and all she does is fall for her CO's. UST and hints (that I interpret to my own agenda) are all what this gate fan needs to satisfy her somewhat romantic heart.
I think AT did a wonderful job in this episode. Carter was funny--she had some great lines. Carter was the scientist who solves the problem---we haven't seen that in awhile. Yeah! AT also did a great job with portraying the nuances of the different Sams. There must have been a tremendous amount of work involved in this episode--by cast and crew and direction! I liked the Carter scene with Martouf, but I always liked Martouf. I like their interactions and it made sense to me that feelings would arise, although of course nothing happened. I think this script was something that AT could sink her teeth into as an actor, and it was great. My one complaint is I wanted more Sam and Janet. But other than that, I'm most happy about seeing scientistSam back. And now, as others have said, I'm ready for some soldierSam with the team!
Supernova
I have got to put in my 2 cents and agree with everyone that has said to cut the crap with Sam Carter and every male that sees her (please do not bring back any more of the men from her past that have unreqauited love for her - it make sher look ridiculous and it makes you, the writers, look more ridiculous). You all need to get over this highschool boy thing you've got that requires you to degrade this character (and such an excellent and strong female lead) with this constant nonsense.
Please, please, please grow up and leave Sam Carter alone; make her the strong lead character she was before. The Martouf almost kiss scene you left in with Sam was a disgrace especially in light of some of the wonderful scenes you chose to leave out and the fact that you had almost zero interaction between Sam and Janet except when Janet left, again disgraceful; you had such potentil and you wasted those opportunities. It seems that very bad judgement continues on the Stargate SG1 lot.
Carole
Joe, Absolutely loved Ripple Effect, even though I had a tough time following the science stuff. Great job!
strider6
Ripple Effect?
Very disapointing.
I was expecting so much more character interaction instead of all the technobable and science stuff...
Sam kissing Martouf... seriously? Spare me please.
Not even a scene between Sam and Janet? Please!
IT could have been WAAAAAY more interesting.
I did like all the Prometheus act... That's unfortunately all...
Dear Mr. Mallozzi: I loved 'Ripple Effect'. It was a great episode that did, in fact, have elements of the old and the new. The room full of Carters was priceless. I have to agree about the Sam/Martouf near-kiss(didn't need), and would have liked to see more inter-action between Sam and Janet, but those are petty complaints. It was wonderful to see Martouf again. But, without a doubt, the very best part was to see Janet (Teryl) back again. I hope Teal'c's comment, when she was leaving, that he hoped it would not be the last time he saw her is a foreshadowing of things to come. In an earlier message on your blog, you had mentioned that, if all went well, this episode would see 'the return of a much loved, sorely missed character'. If you were indeed referring to Janet/Teryl, you were right on the money. If there is any possible way, I would love to see her come back again--and I'm not complaining about any other actor--they all do fine jobs--but she just gave the show something extra. Her conversation with Gen Landry was pure Dr. Frasier--speaking with passion for those with no voice. Please, bring her back somehow. And again, thank you for a wonderful episode--it was the best so far this year.
Agreed. Creepy Martouf scene aside, this was a good, solid episode. I just don't get how the Martouf scene stayed in and the Cassie and Sha're stuff got cut out. That was not so good of a decision. Nonetheless, it was the best any of you guys has done in season nine.
Joe,
There are numerous posts where fans are saying this is the BEST episode of the season. You are getting a VERY positive response for Ripple Effect (Not everyone feels this way, obviously, but it seems to be a common view). Even those who would have wanted some changes are still saying that this is the best episode thus far.
Why do you think this episode is so well liked by many fans? And is this positive response a surprise to you?
Ripple Effect is by-far the best episode this year so far! There were so many things that I loved about it.
-The return of Sam's technobabble, the return of Martouf and Janet, all the variations of SG1, the Sam from Moebius in the background, Teal'c and Daniel's expressions when they saw Janet, the allusions to Sam and Jack, Mitchell's reaction to the Asgard, Daniel saying "I miss Thor"...
Joe, in Ex Dues Machina says that she's "not exactly" single. That most likely means that her and Jack have got something going on. Then why would she almost kiss Martouf?
But still, it was a good episode!
I loved Ripple Effect. It was so good to see Janet again. I am glad that she is safe in some universe. This episode revisited some of my favorite things: Sam's technobabble, favorite characters etc. It would have been cool to see an alternate universe that Jack was still on SG-1! Loved every moment of it. Good Job!
Ripple Effect was very good. Thank goodness for Brad Wright for co-writing it and also for PDL finally coming back to SG1 and directing an episode.
This is the way it should be!
Some serious out the box writing, and directing.
Joe, how come you brought back martoof and not jacob. I'd have rather seen Carmen return than martouf, and it would have made more sense than the weird Sam/Martoof ship. Is sam not with jack anymore? i thought she told agent baret that she wasn't signle. You're really messing with carter's integrity now. My little sister (she's 12) started crying after that scene b/c she thought sam and jack finally got together. Why the change?
Joe,
Loved Ripple Effect, though I could have done with less 'Sam's life in other realities'-it got old fast-and more 'Daniel and Teal'c in other realities'. Even something more about Mitchell would have been nice. Anyway, it was a hoot and I enjoyed it very much.
I liked how ya'll kept us guessing with Critical Mass. I adore McKay and his big brain. This ep. on top of last week's take-charge-Rodney in 'Epiphany' really makes me love 'Atlantis' thiiiiiissss much. Keep up the good work and, please, no more kissing, OK? We want explosions.
Lisa
"Keep up the good work and, please, no more kissing, OK? We want explosions."
100% agree. We like explosions, not kissy kissy faces. Firefights and Nukes!! (and maybe some hand to hand combat--no swords though. That was kind of cheesy)
As for Ripple effect. Good, a little sciency, but interesting.
Kind of fell short on the scenes I wanted most. Such as more interaction b/w Sam and Janet. Maybe a little more expansion on the living Sha're, Janet and Cassie, more of the already established relationships that made us love the characters. The slapstick like humour with the Mitchells seemed sort of like a cop-out or forced humour, and personally, I felt it was there were missed opportunities.
James
Ripple Effect was an awesome episode. Loved the fact that Martouf and Janet came back. I loved the scenes between Martouf and Sam. I liked how there were allusions to Sam's relationship in the alternate universes, myself thinking that they were not Sam/Jack relationships which gives me hope for Sam/Other relationships. I hope a DVD version comes out with deleted scenes.
Joe,
Loved Ripple Effect. I wish you could have keep some of the scenes that were cut, especially when Black Daniel suffers a crisis of conscience.
I liked Kvasir. But who was the voice behind him? He sounds familar.
Thank you and keep up the good work.
I really liked Ripple Effect. It was well thought out and very humorous. It's just like you'd expect if you did meet up with yourself somewhere and had the chance to compare notes. Also, I liked Critical Mass. It was really good and I thought Kavanagh was the bad guy (I really wanted him to be) and was surprised that it was Col. Mitchell. I liked Drs. Zelenka and Lee. Lee's reference to the LOTR and the 101 Dalmations was really funny. Also Zelenka's "do" was cute. I also liked Teyla's song and the music was really beautiful. It was almost Celtic.
I liked how there were allusions to Sam's relationship in the alternate universes, myself thinking that they were not Sam/Jack relationships which gives me hope for Sam/Other relationships.
This is the viewpoint I can't stand. It's always about what's best for the "viewers" and never about what's best for the characters. The last thing Sam Carter needs right now is to be shipped with anyone else, but it's OK because damn it, because we wouldn't want to actually tell a story. TPTB are scared of their own shadow right now. Try to placate every piece of fandom with no regard to mangled mess their making out of the once great characters on the show. Frasier comes back in an episode but doesn't even appear with Sam? And there's no mention of Cassie after they tell her she's dead in their reality? It's so out of character for Janet I can't stand it. But so long as fans can imagine Sam is with whoever they want...well then to hell with the characters. Its's all about the fans. TPTB need to find some courage and tell their story.
Shows like 24 are so much better at this. Yeah, there's people who are mad they killed Palmer and Michelle, but that didn't stop them from doing what they wanted to in the show. They don't try to please every whiny fan group out there. It's the Stargate PTB's great weakness, and it's really hurt them in season nine.
Joe were the married-living with-maternity leave Sam shippiness Sam/Jack?
I hope you can answer becuz I'm nervous!
I have to say I loved Ripple Effect, it was great to see Janet and Martouf again. Sorry but I have to ask, is there any talk of bringing Jacob back for an episode?
Where can one find the music in Critical Mass?
By the way, Ripple Effect was great. Mr. Mallozzi, you and your teams (SG & SGA) do great work. Keep us entertained and happy. Also, thanks for the Star Trek reference. "Mirror, Mirror" was one of my favorite ST: TOS episodes!
For all those who post negative comments in this blog: on ABC, they're showing a really good show called In Justice. That's an alternative to those who find SG & SGA dissatisfying.
Just thought I would drop a note to say thank you for the wonderful ep. I loved Ripple Effect - I loved seeing Martouf and Janet again. I always loved the Martouf character. I have to say the episodes are finally coming back up to par - they were a bit rough for a bit but the chemistry and banter among all the characters has had me in stitches these past few episodes. Thank!!
Thank you so much for bring back Janet & Martoff. Reading your "missing scenes" for Ripple Effect makes me wish they could have done another 1 1/2 hour episode. This episode had twists and turns and backstories and ethical decisions and Asguard and Dr Lee, I feel that we actually lost something. Would "our" SG1 have stolen something from another universe? And why does our universe have the right to condemn other universes because it is "inconvinient"?
So, have you watched all of the Farscape DVDs?
Joe.
Can you tell us who decides what scenes get deleted and what ones are left in? Is it the writer , director, editor, or Rob? I don't think that you would have cut some of the important scenes to the story that were cut. The scene between Daniel and Mitchell discussing Sha're was important to the story. In that reality Janet , Martouf and Sha're had not died. Unfortunately, only the online fans know that Sha're was still alive in that reality because the scene was cut. I have to agree with others that say that scene should have been left in. The idea that Daniel still had his wife and that she was helping the team would have been fantastic.
I, also, wish the scene with Daniel in black BDU's concerned about them doing something wrong would have been left in. The discussion about Cassie was important too.
I did enjoy the episode though. I loved the scenes between Janet and Daniel and so glad Daniel gave her a hug. I guess I am just bummed that such great scenes would have been left out.
Hi Joe,
As a fellow Sam/Jack Shipper I was shocked to hear Sam almost Kissed Martouf.I am curious on what your take is on the almost Kiss. Thanks
Hi Joe. I loved both episodes of Stargate last night. I thought both stories were some of the best this season. To be honest, I didn't think the acting was bad. It kind of brought back the feel and look of some of the more classic SG-1 episodes. I loved seeing Janet and Martouf.
Two things that I desperately miss are the Tok'ra and Thor.
PLEASE, PLEASE BRING IN SOME STORY ARCS INVOLVING THOSE 2 AGAIN!! :)
Keep those stand-a-lone stories coming Joe. I love the arcs you guys have in the series, but the stand-a-lones really make the show worth watching.
One last question. Have you ever thought about having J. Michael Straczynski write a few episodes for SG-1 or Atlantis? I think it would be cool to have him as a guest writer on a few episodes.
Thanks for making 2 great shows and keep up the good work!!
Damn, Joe. In just one episode you've proven that the Goa'uld are a way superior villain to the Wraith.
Hey, Joe... I just remembered that you said you guys weren't going to ship sam with anyone else (besides jack) this season... so what was that sam/martouf/almost kiss about then?
sally :/
And there's no mention of Cassie after they tell her she's dead in their reality? It's so out of character for Janet I can't stand it.
Janet could have not adopted Cassie in her reality you know.
As for the other comments, in my defense I haven't really had the chance to watch Stargate this season, so I have virtually no idea what is going on. This meaning I have no idea about further character development since the preceding season.
Why can't people enjoy an episode without nitpicking about everything. Just because someone some doesn't like something doesn't mean the whole of it is bad.
I agree with the person that said that the Mitchell slapstick should have been forfeited in favor of the cut scene re: Sha're and the scene re: Martouf and Sam where Sam says that she killed the Martouf in her reality or, God Forbid, an actual scene between Janet and Sam that had some meaning such as a discussion about Cassie.
The slapstick is just continued example of vain hope that maybe more fans will start to care about Mitchell but it is not working as so many, on many forums, have pointed to the Mitchell yuk-it-up stuff as the stuff that should have been left out for more important stuff between the characters that have been so important to this show for so many years, the characters that many, many fans have been invested in and do care about. Mitchell standing around in his boxers and boots is not necessary, it does nothing to serve the story (except more cheap thrills) and it actually detracts from the episode, especially when so much better material was left on the editing room floor (or not film at all). What a shame. Still scratching my head and it seems kind of telling IYAM that so many feel the Mitchell stuff is expendable.

i was waiting for a great sam-janet scene too! i loved them hugging, but for cryin out loud, janet was supposed to be sam's best friend!
:/

Joe,
This was a great episode, despite the fact I agree about a few more connections *could* have been implemented differently.
I have an idea (that many may agree with)... For the Season 9 DVD release, perhaps the deleted scenes could be re-included for this year.
After reading through the Making of that you posted, as a fan I would be greatly appreciative of the gesture and of the hard work you and the rest of the team put into this episode (and others, obviously).
My humble regards,
Aaron
PS... I thought Kvasir was a bit of a prick and more than annoying, lol... but he was definitely entertaining, and I like how the SG-1 team emphasize that same emotion on their side. It was very well played, and I hope to see more of Thor and Heimdall again soon. The scenes with Hermiod swearing on Daedelus, and the scene wear Heimdall discusses Asgard umm-- procreation-- are classic moments. Which reminds me, perhaps next time we see Thor and Heimdall, it could be together to show off the results of the new bodies/genetics they've worked so long on.
Joe, at this point you must be aware of how badly you miss RDA. He pulls off all the stuff Browder falls flat with. It's just some kind of inexplicable quality he's got; he's watchable. He's got presence. He's got delivery. Mitchell's jokes grate on people's nerves, but everyone thought Oneill's lines were classic. If there's any way to tell him how much he (and Mike Greenburg) are missed, please pass this on.
Missing Jack
Well, Ripple Effect was pretty good. It lived up to my expectations anyway :D The best episode of the season so far. The only thing I was kind of dissapointed in was the lack of Sam and Janet stuff :( They needed another scene together.
Thanks so much for the Deleted Scenes article posted at Gateworld - it filled a lot of gaps that I had in my own mind after watching episode. I thought it was good (loved seeing Janet and Martouf, and the camera work/production of multiples was superb) - was expecting great. I think some of the deleted material would have made it great, IMO. Such as how come no one has a personal life except for Sam, even in other universes. The scene about Shar'e being alive would have plugged that, somewhat. And how could Daniel become such a conscience-less soldier (I'm referring to him on the Black team of course). The deleted scene answered that.
As you may be able to tell, I'm into the character development aspect of any show and looked forward to finding out what these people would have become in alternate universes. A story dealing with AU's can give all the fans what they want without "ruining" the real team. The possibilities were truly endless (well, 13 teams-worth anyway). The "science" in the episode just gave me a headache (moreso than other AU or time travel episodes, which I also like). For ex., how the hell did the Black team even know that the Green team's universe had a ZPM and when the Green SG-1 team was coming back? Was that explained, because I must have missed it. Could they actually see through this singularity to know what was going on on our planet? I'll go back and re-watch, but I don't think I'll have a better understanding of it. I think Sam Carter talked as fast as Daniel in this one.
I'd love to know if the deleted scenes were actually filmed or was the editing done prior to filming, and if they were filmed, will they be included in the DVD? (Please, please).
And again, thanks for posting those scenes. They were good reading material.
Marsha
I can't believe I forgot to mention the scene I would have liked to have seen the most. That would be the end of Scene 40, between Green Daniel and Green Teal'c where Teal'c would "fail to see the point" of talking to Black Teal'c because "it would be not unlike talking to myself". I can only imagine the facial expressions from both Chris and Michael while filming that one!
Marsha
Mr. Mallozzi,
It is with great sadness that I must tender my resignation as a Stargate fan. The decision did not come easily, but after much soul-searching I believe it to be the correct one.
Last week when SG-1 came on TV, I actually turned off the television, automatically! That has never happened before, and I found myself staring at the hand that held the remote, hardly believing what had happened. So, I started thinking about it. Why had I done such a thing? What prompted such an automatic reaction, especially in light of the years that I have been a satisfied customer of Stargate fare?
First of all, I realized that the new villains, the Ori, are downright boring! Their philosophy is nonsense; unlike the Go’A’Uld who at least emulated a mythological pantheon, they have no roots to the world at large. Therefore, there is no ‘anchor’ tying them to Earth. You can shout that they’re not gods until you’re hoarse, but guess what? We, the viewers, already know that!
Secondly, the major players are gone, and with them, the chemistry that made the show work! Don Davis, the spiritual father of the show, is in movies; Anderson and Tapping are on family leave; Teryl Rothery is doing TV work; etc. The clockwork of the SGC is gone, and it’s obvious you’re running out of time.
Finally, the overriding secrecy of Stargate has gotten old, and out of place given the political climate. Frantic cover-ups and avowals of secrecy are hitting all the wrong buttons in today’s world. It’s bothersome to watch Stargate now; in time it will actually become painful.
What can be done? The solution is that you have to take the show in a new direction. Move Stargate SG-1 into the next phase, whatever that is. Go from there!
If you do that, or something like it, then you stand a chance of preserving your viewership. If not, Stargate SG-1 will be dead by the end of the year—because the worst has already happened: it’s become predictable!
Sincerely yours,
Lawrence H. Burdick chaotician985@hotmail.com
So shippers...how does it feel to lose in the end? Answer me this, why would Sam kiss someone else if she were with Jack? Hmm? She wouldn't, unless she's the slut everyone says. So unless she's rather loose, Sam and Jack arent' together. Good one Joe, way to get the last laugh.
Bye Larry! Don't let the iris hit your ass on he way out! *waves*
but after much soul-searching
omg.
Cool episode Joe, it's neat to see see that sometimes human motivations are beyond good and evil. and it was funny as hell.
Ripple Effect and Critical Mass were both AWESOME episodes... buit what was with the Martouf/Sam almost kiss thing... that was weird!!
Lexa
ignoring the trolls is the best way to go. kudos to everyone that has kept the flaming and such from the previous blogs out of this one. looks like there is hope for this fandom after all :)

Hi Joe,
Loved Ripple Effect... it was a fun ride, well and truly.
Just out of curiosity though, you've made reference to "the intended interpretation" on the relationship threads hinted at in the ep. Clearly PDL had the wrong end of the stick, judging by your behind the scenes diary thingy. So.. what was your intended interpretation?
Cheers :)
Kia ora :) I thought Ripple Effect had a lovely classic SG1 feel about it. Snappy writing, good pace, some keep em guessing moves, and some tender moments. Sincere thanks for a lovely watchable episode.
Peter Deluise did a great job of directing too - it must have driven him crazy in terms of blocking for visual FX, and placing standins for over shoulder shots... (plus always having handy blonde wigs on standby) but he did a great job as nothing jarred during my first viewing (and r first impressions are a one time thing :) )
I loved the little comic touches too - Daniel's reacting to Sam's technobabble (taking off specs to rub eyes tiredly, exchanging glances/head shake with landry), Harriman getting the squinty eye from the double blink Asgard (subtle upgrade on the puppet's eye movements methinks), Dr Lee's reaction to getting a double dose of Sam, Teal'c's considered delivery of his classic "Indeed" et al.
A nice touch, too, that Green Mitchell knows Daniel's coffee routine - giving us a feeling of backstory really nicely and elegantly.
Reading about the missing scenes, oh how I wish you'd be able to hang onto the Share scene in and maybe more importantly for character development, the Daniel/Mitchell scenes. Darn the commercial hour getting shorter and shorter ... a special DVD writer's cut would fix it, if the scenes were shot. I'd buy it! :)
BTW, in the scene where Green Mitchell is interviewing Black Daniel... mmm, some lovely writing and misdirection in that scene (clever Black Daniel and his Plan C), and some really good quality actor interaction going on between Mitchell and Daniel. These guys felt very real when talking to each other and this says to me that giving them more solid on-screen time together would be a VGT (very good thing). As we know, Mitchell is in series catch up mode, and needs to bond with us and with his team mates fast. But its tricky to do that quickly when he's trying to do this with all three team mates at the same time. IMHO if the focus was on he and Daniel building on their already growing chemistry, it would solify their relationship which would automatically feel inclusive of Teal'c and Sam by default, because Daniel's already connected to them. I think we've learnt enough from Mitchell's flashbacks, to now stay in the present and concentrate on some human moments between him and Daniel. They don't need to be operatic, just day to day stuff (hence my disappointment the chinese restaurant mench scene hit the floor :)
Thanks again to you and the team for a very watchable ep.
Thought "Ripple Effect" was one of the best SG-1 episodes I have seen in a long time. Thank you so very much for doing it. It was great to see Janet and Martouf again! Love all the alternate teams too. Kind of would have liked to seen this as a three episode arc (mostly because of Janet and 18 Carters), but I'll take what I can get. Thank you again.
PS: picking up on an earlier comment, I agree Mitchell is in danger of coming across a little too frat boy-ish. I guess the Aunty Em scene stayed in to pull off the change between knee-slapper good ol' boy Mitchell, to serious commander mode Black Mitchell .. curiously this made me like Black Mitchell more that our more Enos Straitt Mitchell.
Joe - I'm really enjoying reading your blog, thanks for taking the time to write it.
I found both "Collateral Damage" & "Ripple Effect" to be excellent episodes. Loved the Mitchell back story that Collateral Damage provided and Ripple Effect was sooo funny - Mitchell's Asguard "pants" comment, Teal'c "easier yes, but far less gratifying",Black Mitchell's response "Did he just insult me?"
I thought Ripple Effect was good, and I enjoyed seeing all the different versions of the teams.
Unfortunately, although we learned a LOT about Sam's love life in the AU's and that she still cares for Martouf, we didn't really learn about anyone else. I would far rather have had those deleted scenes - especially the ones mentioning Shar'e and Cassie and the ones between Black Daniel / Green Mitchell about the Chinese restaurant and Black Daniel / Black Mitchell about the ethics of the situation. I really really really hope those get added to the DVD sets.
I did enjoy seeing Martouf again. He was one of few Tok'ra sympathetic to the SGC. And I REALLY enjoyed seeing Janet. The scenes with her, Daniel and Teal'c, especially the farewell scene in the Gateroom, were wonderful. Is there anyway to bring Janet back? Perhaps an AU Janet seeks refuge in our universe? Please?
I liked that in the Carter Corral where we see allll those versions of Carter working on the problem, one of the versions is the Carter from the Dorkverse in Mobius, eating blue jello. :)
One thing that surprised me was at the beginning, when it was still just Black Team and Green Team, and Black Team was being interviewed. Nobody interviewed themselves....except Carter. My first thought was "Have they learned nothing from Gemini??" Nobody should ever interview their counterpart - there's no way to be properly objective.
Overall, I liked the episode, and I do like Mitchell. I think the new guy is coming along fine.
Critical Mass was good. I like Bill Lee and I'm glad we're seeing so much more of him this year on SG-1 and SGA. In Critical Mass, I loved the whole Twilight Bark / Lord of the Rings analogy scenes. :D
It was also good to see Agent Barrett again. It gives a nice continuity to the shows.
I liked the Whodunnit part of Critical Mass. I really didn't expect it to be who it was, either! I expected Kavanaugh to have some involvment in it because he's just the kind of whiney self-righteous weasel to do something like that.
I hope that the Asgard ARE able to remove the symbiote from the person that did it. It makes me wonder, though, if we've ever seen the real him, or if he's been snaked all the time?
Hey Joe. Ripple Effect was great. It was nice to see Carter leading the team (or should I say teams) in this one. It felt natural, and a lot like the Stargate of previous better seasons. This one ought to silence all those people calling you a liar about the cocommand thing. Anyway, it was a pretty solid episode, and it was much, much better than the boring Colateral Damage of last week. Nice job!
Anthony Phillips
Critical Mass was very good! It's one of my favorite Atlantis episodes. Who knew Rachel Luttrel could sing? By the way, who came up with the Twilight Bark analogy? I thought that scene was clever.
[Mitchell's jokes grate on people's nerves, but everyone thought Oneill's lines were classic. If there's any way to tell him how much he (and Mike Greenburg) are missed, please pass this on.]
Dear 'Missing Jack'
I beg to differ with you. Not 'everyone' thought O'Neill's lines were classic. Some of us are so happy to see RDA gone from this role and with him his lame adlibs that ruined the once fine character of Jack O'Neill.
If you had said this back in the early seasons I might have agreed, but RDA's Jack O'Neill became such an obnoxious and annoying carcature of himself that it was a happy day when we didn't have to be subjected to him again.
I'm not really taking to Mitchell, but he's better than Jack was the last few seasons. If Jack could come back as he was in earlier seasons, then I would miss him too.

I totally agree with what you've said, Anthony. Carter was clearly in charge in this one. It was obvious when she contacted Landry and told him she was scrapping the mission, not to mention the fact that Carter was ordering Mitchell around after they broke out the cell on the Prometheus.
"Have been holding off on Serenity because Paul wants to see it, but it looks like he'll be too busy for the time being."
The wait will be worth it. 'Serenity' is a really cool movie and if you follow the show what happens in the end is a compleate shocker. Also you can see the commercial that made River go all nutso.
Joe,
I too hope you include Jack O'Neill in the 200th episode--it wouldn't be right without him.
Also, I just wanted to let you know that not all fans have become disenchanted this season--"Ripple Effect" was the most enjoyable episode of the season. Keep up the good work!
Ripple Effect...what can I say? Joe, I think you writers are treating Amanda Tapping appallingly. Really, it's just a shame how badly you write her charcter. I thought we'd put all the ship crap behind us with Threads/Moebius. Then you pull this totally strange, completely out of character bullshit out your ass and things are up in the air again. So, Sam broke off her engagement with Pete for Jack, then broke up with Jack for Alternate Martouf? She never had those kind of feelings for Martouf in the past, so why now? The character is just an irredeemable whore at this point, trading whatever man she's with for the one standing in front of her. It's the worst thing you could have done for the Sam character, taking away the last vestige of normalcy in her character. She now doesn't have command, doesn't take care of Cassie, doesn't have her father, and isn't in a relationship with Jack. Good job on eliminating ten years of character growth. AT is now playing a 40 yr old teenager. I'm so done with this show...I can't stand watching you deconstruct the characters I've loved for so long. What the hell were you thinking?
Leave Joe alone. If he wants to break up the ship, he's gonna break up the ship. It's his story and he's telling it. And AT just works for him, she signed on the line. If he tells her to kiss every guy on the show, then that's what she'll do. She obviously has no problem with it, then why do all of you?
Joe...Stargate is awesome now, way better than that old boring stuff from the first five or six years. And Lam is way, way hotter than Frasier. Good trade. Looking forward to the season finally and premier.

Try substituting Teal'c's name for Daniel and it would interest me.

Screw Mitchell and his catch up mode. He's never going to get there. Stop acting like he's ever going to be as liked or well developed as the other three. Treating him like he's special and in need of such dire help is exactly why he doesn't feel like one of the team. Just let him be there and try NOT catching him up. It'll work a whole lot better than the effor to force him in where he doesn't belong.
Sam/Cam, Sam/Jack, Sam/Pete, Sam/McKay, Sam/Barrett, Sam/Orlin, Sam/Martouf...
Hey Amanda, how's that whole role model thing working out for ya? How about that whole "she's not just the girl" thing?
Hi Joe.
Just had to pop in and tell you how AWESOME Ripple Effect is!!!!
I loved seeing Janet again. I so miss her!!!! Loved the Daniel/Janet shippyness.
Seeing JR Bourne in the credits was quite the surprise. I didn't hear any rumors about him. I just love how he walked in and said Hi. to Sam. SQUEEE!!! JR has a lovely voice.
I love how it was SG1 vs SG1. Quite the plot twist.
Thanks for a great ep. Keep up the Great work!!!! Can we see Janet again in S10?!!!!!!
Thought Ripple Effect was a great ep. My fave of the season so far. Lots of great one-liners and team (s) interaction. Hope we see more like this.
Hey Joe,
Good job on Ripple Effect!! A very good episode.
I wish I hadn't read the deleted scenes section afterwards, I know it's nothing to do with you (at least you wrote the scenes in the first place :) but I was deeply disappointed that the Daniel/Mitchell Conscious scene and especially the Daniel/Shar're scenes were cut, I just can't believe that whoever cut the episode couldn't give the Daniel character even that when there were so many illusions to Sam ship. :(
Never the less a good episode overall, well done :)
Joe, please try to get RDA for a couple of episodes next season. I liked Ripple Effect fine, but Mitchell is just acting too goofy. He's so immature. Jack had an edge to him that made the whole show that much more believable. Even when he was only part time RDA really contributed to making SG1 more realistic.
Kass
Thought RE was the best of the season.
A room full of Carters!! Great
Could have done without Sam/Martouf
almost kiss. Would love to have more Janet.
Like Kvasir better than Mitchell and
his immature and unprofessional comments.
Thanks for the deleted scenes post.
Color me the same as the post above.
Amanda Tapping ruled in this one.
The Sam/Martouf scene was really odd and out of place. Some of those deleted scenes would have been much nicer than the Martouf ones.
Mitchell was exceptionally grating in this one. Very, very immature. Not at all professional.

Above poster said : "Enos Straitt Mitchell"
Ha! Excellent one! Very apropos. The guy is a flippin' frat boy better suited to a remake of Animal House as the annoying one-liner joker.
Jerome
I liked Ripple Effect. Just had some minor problems and one big problem. Minor, the running gag of everyone wanting to speed up Sam's explanations. It just didn't seem in character for Daniel (especially his reaction to there being a parallel universe), and just seemed to be there for the sake of the joke. And, I wish there had been time for some of the deleted scenes.
The major problem? Did there have to be all those ship references to the AU Sams? I just hope that's all over with.
But, I loved seeing Janet, and Daniel's reaction to seeing her, liked the explanations of things like why all the teams were SG1, liked the fact that there was more than one Daniel (instead of being dead), liked Black Mitchell's slight differences from the Mitchell of this world, liked the coffee reference.

and I totally third this and agree. Carter in charge is natural and it is Stargate as Stargate should be. It felt real and not forced as so much of S9 has felt previously. RE was a nice redemption from the depths of boredom we had last week in CD. Who here votes to have TPTB bring back Janet as often as possible in any capacity possible? I do. (and goodness gracious give her some screen time with Sam, they were after all, best friends in this uni and they had the Cassie connection, etc. Let's get back to some basics which made the show phenomenal not just good.
peter (yes I know and sorry to all those that cringe at the name. believe it or not he made me cringe too)

I thought it was out of character for Carter too. Hey maybe our real characters are stuck in ancient Egypt or something. *grin*
I thought Sam had the hots for Jack, so what was up with her trying to be kissy face with Martouf?
In all honesty, it's not her, it's the writes who are retarded when it comes to this subject. This one is just so weird it hurts.
I guess in their defence it's heavily implied that Sam and Jack are together in all the other realities. Of course, I guess that also makes our Sam look the most retarded of the bunch. So, yeah, bad job writers.
Joe, please tell me that Mitchell won't be acting like he did in Ripple Effect all of the time. I've pretty much liked Ben Browder in other stuff, especially Farscape, but he was terrible in last night's episode. Why in God's name do you guys want someone like that co-leading SG1? Good thing he wasn't leading in Ripple Effect or else we'd have had the whole episode with him making puerile comments and dumbing down the story.
dani347 said: The major problem? Did there have to be all those ship references to the AU Sams? I just hope that's all over with.//
i don't mind them, ONLY if they're sam/jack related! :p
sally :)
Wow, Joe. Ripple Effect ... I really loved it! Really well written, well acted, well directed (whatever did or didn't make it into the final cuts, it was so well put together, technically and artistically).
I think the neatest part for me was diving even further into the multiverse theory, which I think was researched quite articulately for this narrative. The idea of a singularity diverting a wormhole's space-time trajectory is a notion I love (in my own inept, non scientific way, I suppose). I'm so glad we finally got to see a bit more of that in the context of Stargate's canon [/geek mode off] :)
Having 17 different SG teams, 16 or 17 different Carters in the same room was *fantastic*. Strictly from a visual effects point of view, I was sitting on the edge of my couch saying, that is soooo cool! Before any of that could be finished in post, the way it was originally blocked for direction would have to have been so meticulously measured and shot; my hat's waaay off to the production team on this one. Huge, huge kudos.
Beyond the technical though, I think the actors also did a fabulous job, each in their own right, of coming across as "different" entities. I'm sure most of us got a laugh out of a couple of the Sam Carters wearing glasses (a la Moebius) in that one scene. And the HAZMAT SG-1 ... very cute!
Also, the continuity of the multiverse idea that: everything that can happen, has happened(somewhere) or is happening, now ... is one that is very close to my heart. And, frankly, all those little hints you dropped throughout the episode regarding things that "had happened" or "might have happened" or "were to happen", really made me smile. For a number of reasons. ;-)
Everything came together to endender this episode with what I feel was a real intellectual boost on most of the others we've seen this season so far. Which isn't to say they were bad; just ... not quite at this level of "coolness".
Really, I cannot say enough great stuff about this episode. The dialogue was sharp and witty, the post-production was fabulous, the directing likewise, the science was there in the writing, the action and the teamwork. Carter was brilliant, as was Daniel, Mitchell was pro-active and funny, Teal'c was just spot on. There was so much to love. And, of course, being able to see Janet Frasier appear one more time, and Martouf. If only there'd been time to see more of them.
Super great work from everyone involved. And definitely, positively, absolutely, a kick-arse episode. Way to freakin' go, Joe! Credit where it's due. And for this particular episode, it is undeniably and unequivocably due. :)
Cheers,

Joe, I just wanted you to know that I loved Ripple Effect. It's the best episode of the season so far, and it was so funny. I thought it was a great team episode, and it was a lot of fun to see old characters coming back. Mitchell's had more to do lately, and he's becoming a kickass character. I loved the Mitchell and Mitchell scenes and the double crosses, and I can't wait to see what he does with a gree wire (?) later on.
Great job!
Really? I abhorred the Mitchell and Mitchell scene. That one and the briefing room crack about getting to second base. I thought the Prometheus scene was very self-indulgent acting from Ben Browder. It was OTT just to be OTT, not because it worked in the story. The director really needs to know when to rein in the actors, and that was one of those times. Sometimes I think that for as hard as the writers are trying to not make Mitchell a Chricton redux, that's really how Browder wants to play Mitchell. And teh second base line was just awful.
Most of the one-liners cracked by Mitchell in this ep were purile (hhhmmm wonder why THAT is) and totally unnecessary. Some of the cut-scenes would really have been much more relevant to the story especially the Shar'e cut scene and the Martouf/Sam chat about her killing him. Mitchell is better left to his own devices and not co-leading this team. His innanity each week just seems to be a turn-off; he's not really funny it's turning more into obnoxious than anything else really.

Joe, that was a good job in RE showing the real Lt. Col. Carter in charge of the real team. Nice to see the co-leadership angle playing out, keep it up.

Joe, just want to say THANK YOU for Ripple Effect. Not only a fantastic ep with great character, but an affirmation of what has made SG1 great - the continuity of the story, references to past events that shape the future. It was just nice too for us long-time fans to know that these elements are not forgotten. I managed to avoid all spoilers and for some reason, didn't notice JR Bourne in the opening credits, so I got an absolutely delightful treat when he walked in the room.
Don't listen to all the pro- and anti-shipper nonsense. Just be true to the characters. Be true to what they've been through and experienced, not pretend or "forget" things that happened to them. This ep brought all that together. THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Totally agree. The Mitchell/Mitchell scene was just really odd, IMO. Ben was acting like he was drunk or something; I saw no point in it at all, just an attempt at humor for humor's sake and it came out just plain dumb to me. Previously, I found Mitchell to be just plain boring (didn't evoke any feeling in me) without any sense of a personality. However, in Ripple Effect, I found him somewhat annoying and frat boyish.

Slut....tramp, hooker, loose woman, hussy, trollope, strumpet, sexually promiscuous. I don't know which century you're living in or to which reality you belong, but in mine, Sam displayed none of these traits. She had a different life in every reality so kissing a man in one reality wouldn't impinge on her character/behavior in another. And if almost kissing Martouf in this reality puts her in the "strumpet" category in your world, all I can say is that I'm certainly glad I don't live in your world. You'd probably have already stoned me to death.
Markel
Hurrah for overweight, over bleached and over forty women everywhere! If Sam Carter, Intergalactic Ho can still keep 'em falling at her feet after all these years and all that mileage (I mean, really who knows WHERE it's been?) there's hope for everyone yet! Forget Jenny Craig diets and Victoria Priciple Cosmetics and go claim your sexy alien NOW! Woo hoo!
As we know, Mitchell is in series catch up mode, and needs to bond with us and with his team mates fast. But its tricky to do that quickly when he's trying to do this with all three team mates at the same time. IMHO if the focus was on he and Sam building on their already growing chemistry, it would solify their relationship which would automatically feel inclusive of Daniel and Teal'c by default, because Sam's already connected to them. I think we've learnt enough from Mitchell's flashbacks, to now stay in the present and concentrate on some human moments between him and Sam. They don't need to be operatic, just day to day stuff.
Except that would be the faultiest logic of all given that Mitchell has developed more of a connection with Daniel and Teal'c in half a season than the self-obsessed Carter has had for years.
joe, will the sam/other ship ever stop?
Not while it's so easy to get a rise out of all you psycho shippers. Don't you understand how much they love pissing you around? Especially as the majority of the regular audience probably doesn't give a crap one way or another.
why'd you have sam almost kiss martouf if she's supposed to love jack?
Because Jack doesn't love her and the woman is getting desperate for a shag?
i'm not really expecting you to answer, but it's the only place i think you'll really see this since you barely play on your q/a thread and emailing is over.
Gee... I wonder why that could be???
Sam Carter rocks. Easily the best thing about Stargate. There is a way to make Stargate better though - ditch Daniel, Mitchell and Teal'c (well maybe keep Teal'c as the token guy) and bring in Teyla, Weir and Vala as well. Then you'd have a truly awesome show.
And I feel pity for the trolls (troll?) above. If they are really that insecure about their likes on the show that they have to resort to those kind of comments... I'd hate to be fan of whatever they like...
Hmm. How is wanting to get rid of the one thing you don't like about the show "insecure" but what you want, to get rid of everyone, isn't? Interesting logic. It did make me suddenly realise that TPTB are pretty crap at hiring actresses though, with the exception of Vala in that list every one of them is a bland uninteresting character who is rarely given anything of their own to do, played by actresses who have the greatest of difficulty holding the screen. Have to wonder if it's not TPTB who are insecure.
perhaps i should rephrase that - a mini-series with Carter, Vala, Weir and Teyla. They'd still be on their original shows though. I'd even settle for a crossover episode where the girls get to kick arse :)
And all 4 actresses are excellent actors. They certianly give some of the best performances on the show. I'm sorry you feel the need to continuaslly put them down with illogical and absurd arguements because... well I'm not sure really. Does it make your own favourite actor/character look better? Do you enjoying stirring up shit on forums?
And considering that JM skips all the anti-actor crap anyway, you've gone to some effort to post about the stuff you don't like. He's not listening to it. So what was the point of saying it? Can't find anything positive to say about the things you like and instead turn to petty flames of the stuff you don't like? I wonder if people who are fans of the same things you are have similiar issues...?
Good strategy PTB. Super. You get the entire stargate audience tuning in to see how it's gonna be without RDA and AT, and you threw that crappy Daniel/Vala comedy "miniseries" of doom at them. So now, by the time Ben gets a chance to shine, they've driven half the audience away already. Super.
And you people saying everyone's ratings went down, of course they did. SG-1 is the lead in show...if they don't pull a good number then everyone's ratings will always be down. SG-1 is in the most important time slot, Atlantis is in the best. Atlantis losing ratings after SG-1 only to be picked up by Galactica speaks to how crappy that show is. Throw Dr. Who in there, that'll keep Scifi Friday strong. The Dr. is just what the doctor ordered.
Joe, you wrote that this week you guys were spinning the 200th episode. So, I figured I'd help you out a little and get you started.
Jack O'neill walks into the SGC.....
There you go, finish it however you like, but keep that first bit as it's sure to be the best part of the whole episode.
Actually we are getting a season 10 because of the ratings of the first 7 or 8 episodes of season 9. So it was not crappy. And as far as Mitchell I have seen on a lot of different boards fans not liking him after he has had his chance to shine as you call it. There are alot of Jack fans that don't like him and never will. I read insulting comments that said what a good thing it was that Ben was coming in because Rick was getting old. I read comments about how great it was to have Ben because he was a better actor then Rick. All of these comments that I read were from professionals (supposedly) that worked for magazines and newspapers. Talk about really making Rick's fans mad and having an immediate dislike towards Mitchell.
There are also alot of Sam fans that don't care for the character either. The leadership issue is a huge problem not to mention the fact that some think that Cam and Sam will be shipped ( and if you think Sam fans are ticked now just wait). The Sam/Jack shipper thread on Gateworld will implode.
There are fans of the original characters that are upset that Ben was brought in as lead over the remaing 3(you know the actors that have been there since the begining). There are alot of fans upset about the credits. There are alot of fans concerned that Claudia being brought in as a regular will mean the show will turn into Farscape and Amanda, Michael and Chris will be wallpapered or pushed off of the show.
There are some fans that don't care for the character because they find him boring and don't find him professionl enough to lead the team. There are also some Farscape fans that don't care for the way Ben is playing the character.
Considering Rick retired and Amanda was on maternity leave if the begining of the season had been all Ben all the time or if they had put Mitchell and Vala together (ala Farscape) longtime fans of the show would have been furious. IMO Ben has been given alot of opportunities to shine.
Don't know if I agree with everything you said above, but I agree that Amanda/Sam has been really screwed over this year. Talk about punishment for having a child. I honestly wish TPTB would write her character out of the show at this point, just so that they can't do any more damage to it. She's been mangled so badly in season nine that I think everyone understands why Amanda is so upset and concerned about her role anymore. You've treated her like shit, and out of sheer loyalty to you she still tried to bail this sinking show out. Too bad with the space baby crap and Vala's return not even a miracle could save it.
TPTB Suck

Yes, I agree. There u go. Just do it.
Joe: Just want you to know that I LOVED Ripple Effect. My co-worker and I were just discussing it, and we were both wondering how the Black team knew that there was a ZPM in our reality? I'm sure I have to watch the ep again, and it may be in there, but if you care to share, we would love to hear all about it. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Joe, I miss Maj. Davis! Please bring Colin in for some work. I miss Rick, too, but I suppose it's pointless asking for him to appear for at least a minute. And why does Carter always look so sad? She seems depressed. Although, I'm firmly convinced that she and O'Neill are together and she's depressed at having been ordered back to the mountain. Ok, don't swear at me for that one, I'm a romantic and you can't have those two dancing around each other for 8 years, break up with their prospective significant others, and not have them get together. As cute as Pete is, and I do think he got the raw end of the deal. Bad Sam!
And, Joe? This entire Ori thing is ridiculous. My apologies to who ever thought it up, but it really is a little too far off the Stargate universe path.

If you think that AT was punished for having a child, then you'll probably are going to be surprise a little bit to find out that CB is exactly in the same situation now as AT at the beginning of season 9. Filming Crusade and Camelot back on September/October CB was... go to www.wireimage.com to find out. Your grey cells are working? Good.
I don't get it. What's your point, that they treat all pregnant women badly? Oh, and stalk much?
Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the episode......EXCEPT what I really didn't understand the whole scene between Sam and Martouf. It was totally out of place for me. If your going to hint at a Sam/Jack relationship, please just come out w/ it!!! It would be great. But that scene w/ Sam and Martouf was very weird. I thought you guys were hinting she was w/ Jack? I'm very confused. Oh, and PLEASE more Janet. Somehow. We love her so much and have really missed her!!!!
As a female viewer I've become more and more disappointed with both SG1 and Atlantis this year. Over on SG1 we have Carter, who the writers have penned as either a babysitter or someone to be shipped around, Lam, a grown woman with serious issues about her daddy, and Vala, the fantasy girl for the writers who features boobs, sex talk, and not much else.
Over on Atlantis we have Weir, who is more of a yes man than a leader, and Teyla, who bares her midriff and senses things. And the writers are playing both women off of Sheppard, which means that one or both will sit around pining for him while he whores around the galaxy. Where are the strong women? Where are the scenes featuring women talking to each other? Why do female characters on these shows end up as shipping fodder?
And to the poster who called Ms. Tapping overweight, wow. You have serious issues with body image, honey.

now, as for this amanda tapping
bashing... is this for the at/sam fans or amanda herself? amanda said she reads at gateworld sometimes, so... why do you want amanda off the show so badly?
sally :)
I think many problems could have been resolved if a few female writers joined the existing team at some point because I am very disappointed with the way Sam Carter is being portrayed of late. Furthermore, given the Sam Carter of earlier seasons (compared to the really odd version we have now) I am tempted to think that TPTB really have a problem with her.
This, RDA leaving and the writers not sticking to a tried and tested recipe (team, team, team), will be the death knell of the show. We have seen what happened with X Files. Once they started messing around with things that actually did not require messing with, it was over (a mere two seasons later). So, to those who like the current format, enjoy while it lasts. Maybe there will be an 11th season, but that (imo) will certainly be the last.
I just hope that Amanda Tapping decides to go before the end. She does not deserve 8 years work to be wrecked like this. The ship is sinking and she is one of the few that deserves to leave with dignity intact (the little she has left after the mess of season 9).
Whomever thought that a Sam/Cam ship should be contemplated must please, please stay away from brainstorming sessions related to the show. It is a bad idea.
In fact let us just all assume she is having a thing with Jack and let the ship thing rest for a while.
Sam/Cam?? DO NOT GO THERE! Seriously, fire whoever thought that up.

Exactly the opposite. I don't agree with a person who thinks that AT's character was screwed this season as a consequence of her having a baby. I'm enjoying AT's performance very much, Cam and Sam - a lot of potential here, Joe think about it seriously :D - especially in RE Sam gave me a lot of good laugh, great sense of humour! :)
And I'm looking forward season 10, it's gonna rock! :D
'anonymous said...
As a female viewer... I've become more and more disappointed with both SG1 and Atlantis....'
And why would that be..
Joe,
I think the problem is that men tend to watch the program for action and plot. No man or father I know who watches SG1 considers Jack a role model for themselves or their sons and yet if you scan the 'pro-Sam' forums you see the emphasis is on Sam as a role model for single women, mothers and their daughters.
Therefore, Sam must always lead, must always be treated with respect, solve all the problems and in the end have no flaws. To the extent the writers deviate from this ideal they are treating Sam badly (and watch as this same attitude continues with the female leads on Atlantis).
I agree with the posters who say you have done some dumb things with the Sam character this season, but, if any character has been written badly this season it is Mitchell.
You replaced an Alpha male with a zeta male who seems afraid to take command and every other line he has is supposed to be a joke. That is why most viewers don't like the character (especially, I think, the women ... Why would Carter take an order from such a wimp).
You can fix the Mitchell problem through writing.
The Sam role model problem may require a SG-Voyager spinoff staring all the female leads from SG1 and Atlantis. ;-)
K.
Agree on the poorly written Mitchell. Disagree on the woman thing. I'm a guy and even I think he's just a bad Jack clone. And why do you imply that Cam taking orders from Carter makes him less of a man? He should have been a major, he's too young to be a Lt. Colonel. Fans will dance around the issue til their feet are sore, but bottom line is that Sam should still be in command of Sg1. And everyone knows it. Some folks just let thier own agendas about actors or fandom get in the way. In-show logic was chucked out the window with season nine, and that's why so many fans are mad. Daniel fans are unhappy, Sam fans are unhappy, Jack fans are unhappy, hell even the Mitchell fans are unhappy. Just because I lurk doesn't mean I'm in the "Stargate is better than ever" crowd or that that crowd is in the majority. They're just a whole hell of a lot more vocal about how they feel, because they feel threatened by the large number of unhappy fans.
[If your going to hint at a Sam/Jack relationship, please just come out w/ it!!! It would be great. But that scene w/ Sam and Martouf was very weird. I thought you guys were hinting she was w/ Jack? I'm very confused.]
Your very confused because you thought wrong. They were NOT hinting at a Sam and Jack pairing for any of the AU Carters, especially the one on Martouf's team.
I think your also just going to have to go with the cold, hard fact that her little 'not exactly' line to Barrett in ED was a little white lie she told to him so he wouldn't hit on her.
Our Sam is a single gal who is still very much attracted to Martouf.
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for Friday's episode “Ripple Effect”. Not only is it the only episode this season that I watched both airings, but I've found myself watching it several more times over the weekend just to try to see if I can find things that I may have missed in the first few viewings.
The episode was filled with many interesting nuances between the different SG-1 teams and scenes between Daniel, Teal'c and Janet were extremely touching. I also thought Amanda and the crew did a phenomenal job with multi Carter scene. It was a hoot to watch.
I have to admit I was truly excited to finally get a glimpse of my beloved SG-1. However, as enjoyable as this episode may have been, after seeing how Daniel has behaved throughout season nine and now watching Sam try to kiss an AU Martouf; I’m truly starting to believe that MY Sam, Daniel and Teal’c may have indeed perished in Egypt and the SG1 team we have now is just a another AU knock-off. This is the only explanation I can find to justify how strangely the characters seem to behave at times. This SG1 team may be beginning to mesh as a team, but there is still no warmth whatsoever whenever they are together. What happened to the Sam, Daniel and Teal’c who would have died for one another in Upgrades? What happened to the Daniel who had to be practically dragged from Ernest’s Castle? He is nothing like the one I saw in RE, who seemed utterly bored by most of what Sam had to say;in fact he seemed to disbelieve the simple suggestion that the Black Team may have come from an alternate universe. And what happened to the Sam who appeared to salivate anytime she came within inches of new, technologically advanced devices. In Collateral Damage, she didn’t seem the least bit interested in the memory device that was being used.
Despite all of the above, I commend you for your efforts with Ripple Effect. I can not place blame on you for every issue I may have with the new season. I really do believe that if all of the cut scenes had indeed been added, RE would have been a truly wonderful episode. However, I feel I must agree with many of the other comments in that the editing left much to be desired. As much as I loved seeing Sam again in all her technobabble glory, I too wish we had been allowed to see the scene with Daniel talking about Sha're, the discussion about Cassie, the ethical questioning between Black Daniel/Mitchell, as well as a simply meeting between Sam/Janet. But more importantly, I really wished we had seen Sam tell Marty she had killed him and been able to see Sam briefly deal with her own guilt rather than see her put once again into an awkward situation with the near-kiss as well as all the discussion about who she was involved with in other realities. I know Sam cared for Martouf, but it just seems to me that the writers are trying to make the viewers believe that there was much more going on between Sam and these men (Orlin & Martouf) than had ever come to pass in the original episodes. I for one am very disappointed by the path the writers have continued to go with Sam, as I believe it is a great disservice to Sam's character and integrity.
One can only hope, for Sam's sake, that you will finally just end the whole ship situation by either having Sam finally admit she is with Jack or have them both admit there is nothing between them. Maybe then the writers will finally stop hinting about the situation and actually allow Sam to have mature storylines that will once again show me what it was that made me adore this character so much.
Amanda is an amazing actress. Her performance in RE solidifies this fact to me. It's an absolute shame that she must constantly endure such pubescent story arcs when there is so much more that she/Sam can offer to the storylines.
Kat ( ForeverSG1 )
Personally, based on the past 5 eps, I think it's Daniel who's getting most severely screwed, with Teal'c a close second. Back to near-wallpaper, about 10 lines of dialog, and always blocked behind or separate from Sam 'n Cam.
The fact that so many cut scenes from RE (which was enjoyable but by no means the best ep of the seaon IMO) involved Daniel -- his roads not taken, his ethics -- bummed me out about the show all weekend.
I was a big defender of Mitchell up until now, but I'm not feeling the love anymore. He's starting to grate. And before you all say "I told you so" about Daniel fans... you don't need to bother; I get the message in advance.
Yes, Amanda is amazing, but I wish the writers would come up with something for Michael to get his teeth into. It's been a while since we had a really good Daniel-centric ep. MS is truly a gifted actor. I have a hard time watching the insane Daniel eps just because Michael has obviously gone the extra mile to bring out such wonderful, emotional laiden performances. More Michael, please!
Me three. In fact, I'll take more of ANY of the original three chracters. I don't care how big a "name" Beau Bridges is, he shouldn't be getting more screentime than Shanks or Tapping or Judge. And I won't even mention Mitchell. He's just a train wreck.
someone said: I just hope that Amanda Tapping decides to go before the end. She does not deserve 8 years work to be wrecked like this. The ship is sinking and she is one of the few that deserves to leave with dignity intact (the little she has left after the mess of season 9).//
what i don't understand is... being the huge s/j shipper that i am, i went into season 9 realizing that there'd be little to no s/j ship. even though i didn't agree with the reason (no rda/jack = no s/j ship), i accepted the decision *somewhat* but was at least happy that sam was returning. i said to myself, well at least i have strong 'sam in command' to get excited about. so i settled (in) and waited for her return...
they took her command away from her. 'not' mitchell, but the writers. they knew amanda/sam was returning, but they gave it to their new character.
rob cooper said there'd be no ship this season, but i guess he meant there'd be no 's/j' ship, because all i've seen is sam/other. even though barrett turned into AMBIGUOUS s/j, it was still a guy chasing sam. and then it went downhill after that. in came orlin, and child or not, the writers changed their PAST relationship to insert ship. then mckay, with his 'all in my head' ship with sam that was STILL ship nonetheless. and now martouf, which even though i knew sam had some feelings of attraction for, she never went as far as to 'act' on them. and since we're to believe that sam and jack have come to some 'understanding' with each other after 'threads'... how and why would she instigate a kiss with another man?
this season is nothing 'but' sam/other ship.
the only thing i agreed with pulling back s/j ship this season was because i thought the break from her personal ship issues might make fans more apt to accept when sam/jack ship did pop up again. now fans are just saying ENOUGH! with any mention of ship coming sam's way.
and i have to ask the writers this; why are you writing sam carter this way? if you were going to pull back on ship, why was it 'only' s/j and not all? and to add to the problem, it's like you're making an effort to *hurt* her character by letting her 'not' progress in the other aspects of her personality. having her return to second in command (ignoring the so-called co command idea), is NOT letting her *progress*.
speaking as a sam and s/j shipper fan, you could have fed two birds with one hand by letting her begin a slow and behind the scenes relationship with jack (it would have shown a natural progression of her trials and tribulations of the last two seasons *petevrsjackvrswhatdoiwantwithmylife*) while also letting her grow beyond what she'd learned (personal) to become the -focused- kick butt commander you were creating for 8 seasons.
what happened????

I have to agree with this statement especially the fact that the way the PTB are dealing with Sam's character is a huge disservice to the character and her integrity as well as to Ms.Tapping - it is truly disgraceful that prepubescent leanings from writers, directors, and TPTB must come at the epxense of this, and other, once wonderfully written characters.

Joseph-- LOVED Ripple Effect. Great episode and after reading the deleted script scenes, I'm only sorry they didn't let that one run 90 minutes so we could get the whole feel of the thing. Thanks so much, it was terrific.
Maureen
Loved Ripple Effect-best so far this season. I happen to like Mitchell, Landry, Lam and Vala. I miss O'Neill, would love more subtle hints at his existence. ... Would the producers of the DVD's consider an out-takes and bloopers disc? True 'gaters would love that.
I really agree with those who have said that the Mitchell/Mitchell scene should have been cut and the cheap thrill (for some) of Mitchell in his skivvies also could have been cut and the show would not have suffered in the least.
In fact it would have been better if they had put in the discussion re: Shar'e scene or the Sam/Martouf scene regarding her admittance that she killed her Martouf or the scene discussing Cassie and please, please next time (and there are tons of hopefuls that there will be a next time) have a bit of something besides a goodbye between Sam and Janet, that was just so blatantly bad considering their relationship for 7 years (not to mention the fact that TPTB were always about how great AT and TR were when they had scenes together). That is some of the quality that is missing in the show, scenes that actually have depth, kind of like the Daniel/Janet stuff in RE. We need more of that between the team, especially Sam, Daniel and Teal'c.
Come on guys you can do better than some of the less-than-stellar fare you have served up for S9. We saw a glimmer of it Friday in RE. Show us it's still there.

Some clever Arthurians on OurStargate discovered that some of RCC's dialog for Daniel in Avalon was taken from the web and is furthermore sadly incorrect.
From this really inaccurate site: http://www.uidaho.edu/student_orgs/arthurian_legend/england/arch/index.htm#tomb
In 1191, the monks at Glastonbury Abbey claimed to have found the grave of King Arthur. On the stone burial was an inlaid lead cross with the inscription, Hic iacet sepultus inclitus rex Arturius in insula Avallonis ("Here lies the famous King Arthur, buried on the Island of Avalon"). The claim was not taken seriously until 1278 when Henry II ordered the grave to be exhumed.
From Avalon Part I
DANIEL: "In 1191, the monks at Glastonbury Abbey claimed to have found the grave of King Arthur. On the stone burial was an inlaid lead cross was the inscription: "Hic Iacet Sepultus Inclitus Rex Arturius in Insula Avallonis." "Here lies the famous King Arthur, buried on the Isle of Avalon." Now the claim was not taken seriously until 1278, when Henry II ordered the grave to be exhumed."
Sadly, they're both wrong. Henry II was long dead by 1278. It was Edward I and Queen Eleanor who were there and witnessed the reburial of Arthur's remains.
Joe, you might want to recommend Rob use a text book or at least http://en.wikipedia.org instead of some random unverified site.
I saw Ripple Effect. Why are you deconstructing Sam/Jack with Sam/OtherGuys?
Because she's an intergalactic space ho.
Majorsal you and other shippers like you are exactly the reason Sam is what she is today, your constant begging and whining and letter writing has convinced the producers that the only thing the character is good for, the only support she has among fans, is for her is her romantic life. It's waaaaay too late to complain now. You made your ship, no you get to go down with it. Have fun.
I think that ripple effect was the best episode this season. it was certainly the only one that seemed more like stargate and less like a fargate spoof. it was fun and enjoyable, and wonder of wonders, those four folks wearing the same patches...dude, they talked to each other. they interacted. That hasnt' happened in a long time.
I think my one main quibble - other than the colored uniforms oops in the beginning...they didn't have any packs so no way to carry changes of clothes - was the cutting of the sam/janet bits in favor of sam/marty.
sam and marty, sure they were cute, but marty's been pushing up daisies for years. he's an old wound and mostly forgotten - although it was nice to see jr and he's a sweetie - whereas cassie's situation, sam and janet's friendship, not to mention jack's abrupt departure from the universe are huge gaping wounds.
It would have been nice to have seen these most recent issues addresed when y'all had the golden opportunity to do so instead of a silly retread of an old and forgotten ship (sorry sam/marty folks)
the cam/cam yuk-yuk bits....eh. yeah, so cam is a juvenile dude who probably owns every episode of the three stooges. given the choice between that and having someone acknowledge jack's absence or actually mentioning cassie, i'd have taken the latter over the former any day of the week. Yuk-yuk moments do little to nothing to show cam as a qualified leader or to generate any respect for the character.
so, certainly enjoyable...but if a few different editing choices had been made it could have been a classic redemption of the 'oversights' of the past couple of years
I agree with alot of what Skydiver said but would like to go a step further. The scene with Daniel, Teal'c and Janet I think would have been even better if it had been Daniel, Sam and Janet. No offense to Teal'c but Daniel and Sam, I feel, are the two that really needed closure. I also couldn't stand the two Mitchell's yucking it up in the cafeteria. I didn't find it funny at all and felt like Mitchell came off looking really bad. I would have much preferred the scene about Daniel talking about his wife Sha're and how she was still alive and helping them. To me the idea was that everything went right with the tan BDU team. Janet didn't die, Martouf didn't die and supposedly Sha're didn't die but fans that aren't online won't know that. Sha're goes all the way back to the movie and if the scene was filmed I can't believe it was cut.
I too would have loved something about Cassie and Jack. Also, the scene with black BDU Daniel questioning what the the black team was doing is sooooo Daniel and would have added so much to the consistency of the character. I won't even begin to express my feelings about the Sam/Martouf almost kiss or the fact that someone likes the idea of shipping Sam and Cam. I am a big fan of Sam and Daniel and it bothers me to see missed opportunities for both of their characters.
I did enjoy the episode though Joe. It was great to see Teryl and J.R. again.
Dawn Said "the writers are trying to make the viewers believe that there was much more going on between Sam and these men (Orlin & Martouf) than had ever come to pass in the original episodes.
That may be true for Martouf, but didn't Sam jump in the sack with Orlin? Maybe sex doesn't count as something "going on" in your world, but it'd probably be a red letter day for any man sleeping with Carter.

Uh...nope.
Jack? Jack who? Who is this Jack character that everyone speaks of? Eh, nevermind. Didn't you guys love those shots of Prometheus? Man, who needs characters development and continuity when you've got CGI like that! Besides, Mitchell sort of makes up for all the disconnect between seasons8 and 9, right? Right? Oh, crap.
Critical Mass
I'd avoided the spoilers for this, so i didn't know that we had a goauld in hiding to look for...so outing caldwell did catch me by surprise. Which is a rarity this season in both shows. I don't know if it's because i've been watching for a while and 'know' how y'all think or because i just have a knack for figuring things out, or if you guys are taking the easiest plot path, but there's been little to no suspense this season in either show for me.
I usually watch while i chat with friends and the average time for us to suss out the ending is 21 minutes in, or middle/end of the second act. The pieces will be on the table and it's just a matter of whether or not there's a complication on the way to the conclusion.
I wasn't too crazy about the trust rearing its ugly head on atlantis, in fact i groaned. And the whole 'let's torture it out of him' was so, so, SOOO 'homaged' from lost that it was quite humorous.(and not as much fun without the eye candy of sayid and sawyer)
I did like them searching, did like seeing novak and hermie again and it was kinda refreshing for the easy baddie to not be taken - it it not being kavanaugh, although that would been kinda nice for him to grow a pair and actually do something more than whine and bitch.
It was ok, wasn't terrible but, given the spoiler pics i've seen for later this season, i have a funny feeling that the events of this episode - especially what happened to caldwell - will just get swept under the rug and forgotten.
Especially since the show is now on the same night as a kick bootie drama - battle star galactica - which has excellent drama and plot twists and zingers, it just makes the rather pedistrian plot twists of Atlantis or Stargate all the more glaring.
Fun to watch, sure. and caldwell caught my by surprise, but that was about all.
maybe less of a focus on the arc and more of a focus on the people could make it interesting and deeper
I usually have a drink to get me through Stargate (a habit i started with valagate, she's so much funnier with alcohol and easier to tolerate), use atlantis to clear my head because i know that the plot of BSG will require my full attention
No more Sam shipping, please! None!

I stand corrected. Now I recall he only "shared his essence" or whatever he'd call it by glowing all around her. Pete is the only one who got that far.
Thanks for only correcting me and not going crazy like some others might have.
Joe,
The show Stargate Command, that you talked about as a joke...is it a real idea you have or just something you threw out there?
Ben
P.S.
Loved Critical Mass and Ripple Effect! The review on Critical Mass made some good points (Sharon Fetter was the reviewer.)
Ok, to TPTB:
I guess it is difficult to keep up with the blogs, especially in light of some of the more “emotional” ones. So, for the love of Stargate, please allow me to summarize what I believe many fans would (and in some cases wouldn’t) like to see:
- No Cam/Sam ship
- No Sam ship at all
- But if you have to at least let it be Jack (purely to prevent all the UST that was written into S1-S8 from going to waste).
- RDA to appear every now and again or at least be mentioned (this is just to prevent newer fans from asking “Jack? Jack who??”)
- Please allow the original characters to be the characters they originally were. They are a big part of why Stargate became such a success.
- More team centered eps with more team interaction
- Find a personality (any personality at all will do, but preferably one that is has not been done before) for Mitchell that will make him more acceptable to the average Stargate fan. He seems to be another good actor that is becoming the victim of writers being influenced too much by “external pressures”.
- Please, oh please, write Vala out of the show if everything she says and do are going to be colored with sexual innuendo. If the need for such a character is there, then rather create another spin-off. Maybe you can call it Stargate : Booty Call…??
- Bring back Janet
- Bring back enemies that actually seem intimidating
Well, that’s it. Hope somebody will at least consider some if not all of the above…..
Just wanted to say I liked the backstory w/ Cam's dad in Collateral Damage. Also the team felt more like a team in Ripple Effect--more comfortable with each other. I do miss the Daniel-Sam friendship though. I always thought they had a strong bond, but I haven't seen it this season.

After buying 8 straight seasons of DVDs, I was considering not buying the 9th season DVD set of SG-1. You changed my mind with a single episode - Ripple Effect. Thank you thank you thank you. I loved it!
Haven't been happy this season at all. Sam's turned into nothing, Daniel's become Rambo, and Teal'c is still mute.
But Cam's a real jokester and Landry's a cliche, so, good job there. I guess. Atlantis has rotted TPTB's brains. Too many sacrafices on Sg1 for Atlantis' sake.

See, I'm there too. That's just another, nicer way of saying how badly this year has sucked. I never thought RDA was that important to the show, but boy was I wrong. I think Mike Greenburg must've been really important too because there's no way this crap would make it to screen with them there.
You're both wrong. It's just that TPTB have started going for the teenage boy audience and have been losing viewers all year long. Too many space ships, scantilly clad women, dodgy plots and stunt casting have all contributed to the swift demise of this once great franchise. Sadly, I don't think there's one producer up there that sees anything wrong with the stuff they've put out this year. What more proof do you need than the fact that they're adding Vala to the cast? Skiffy runs the show now, and I daresay the poster above was right, apparently Gekko was responsible for the quality of the show and for keeping the network's grubby mitts off Stargate. Too bad.
Once a Poster, Now a Lurker
Joe,
I heard Jack O'Neill will be killed off in season ten. Is that true???
I hope not. Miss Jack tons.
For the love of Pete!!! Why, oh WHY would any sane person consider killing Jack? What is wrong with these people?? I really hope this is just an unfounded rumour. And if they want to kill him, I would like to suggest they kill Shanks, Judge and Tapping too. At least that way they will not be able to do more damage to those characters than they have already done.

The rumor is about killing off Jack O'Neill who is a fictional character. You are suggesting killing off Michael Shanks, Christopher Judge and Amanda Tapping who are REAL PEOPLE.
Maybe you might want to clarify what you mean or else you sound pretty damned scary to me suggesting that real people be killed off.
Have no fear, it's just a rumor. Though if it is true then I think TPTB should keep up with their horridly lackluster treatment of Jack this season and have him die of a paper cut in Washington. It would really send off the character with a whimper instead of a bang and set up a snazzy one liner for Mitchell..."It's only a flesh wound!!" Brilliant!
Dear Joe,
As much as the fandom disagrees about things, one thing seems universally desired:
BRING BACK JANET!!!!!!!!
Dear Joe,

Joe I don't know if it's universally desired, but absolutely second this idea of bringing back Janet Fraizer. Lam is ok, but Janet is just miles above her in every respect. I miss her and the show desperately needs someone like Janet to who could more than hold her own with the presence that is Vala on screen. Sam and Lam just couldn't do it (doesn't make them bad characters or the actress who play them not good, just means that Janet-Teryl is every bit as dazzling as Vala -Claudia is).
Yeah, please bring Janet back! And if RDA is willing, of course, please bring Jack back for a bit as well. :)

that is complete rubbish and you know it. all i've ever (or any shipper) has asked for is for them to go forward with what THEY STARTED. i didn't ask for ship for just ship sake, but for *sam and jack* to get together. i didn't create this mess, the writers did.
give a better example to bash.
sally :)
Oh please! The original poster was right on. The shippers starting objectifying Carter as soon as she smiled at O'Neill, and you haven't stopped yet. Ship is your heroin. No matter how much the writers give you, it's never enough. Too bad there's nothing left of Carter in the process, but don't blame your addiction on the drug dealers. And now they're messing with you for fun. Time to find a new supplier, eh?

and what does that mean? that i just go from sam/jack to sam/other or other/other? it's just for ship/romance, right? doesn't matter WHO it's with? please clarify.
sally :)
Why wasn't there a Jack O'Neill in any of those realities? Besides AlternateJanet asking for General O'Neill why wouldn't there be at least one Jack? How insulting for Jack fans and RDA fans to be forgotten so easily.
LC

Other/other. There's lots of ship on mainstream shows these days where you're much more likely to get what you want than on SG-1, where one character in the pairing is defined by men who once had crushes on her and the other is permanently GONE from the show.

well, as much as i think you've got my best interests at heart *snort*, i'm not giving up so easily on this pairing. i've invested 8 years waiting to get to the point of 'threads', and now i'm waiting for the payoff. and i still believe it'll come. i just wish they'd stop shipping sam off with anyone that ever blinked her way just to... well, i don't know why they're doing it.
as to not (continue) to bore the ppl on this blog with our match, i'm not going to 'debate' this with you 'here' anymore.
suffice it to say, i'm not giving up on sam/jack and i'm not going to stop talking about it.
sally :)
Oh, FCOL. If there's crappy ship on SG1 or poor development of Carter it's the writers' fault, not the shippers or any other fans. TPTB have stated time and time again that they don't listen to the fans. Whatever ends up on the show is completely under the control of the guys on the bridge. If there's a problem then all responsibility lies with them, not with the characters, not with the actors, and certainly not with the fans. Learn how to place blame where it's due.
I have to agree that Janet should be brought back no matter how it is accomplished. Killing her was one of the dumbest things TPTB have done (besides the deconstruction of Sam Carter). Can you say "see the forest through the trees?)
Let's also bring back the real Carter, the one we saw a glimpse of in RE. Mitchell just isn't cutting it and he isn't really fitting in. He's a "frat boy" looking for something but he's not finding it with this team. He is not up to snuff for them. He isn't part of the team and with 3 great characters like Sam, Daniel and Teal'c and 3 actors like AT, MS and CJ, he's just not needed and he actually detracts from the show. The corny one-liners, the bad judgment displayed and the immaturity that shines through are not what this team needs and it's not what SG1 is about. Let's move on and bring back the TEAM of 3.
As for Vala, AT's Sam Carter and TR's Janet can run circles around Vala and AT and TR are heads and tails above CB, sorry. Just as Mitchell doesn't fit Vala is even less of a fit, especially her over-stuffed, cliched cartoon character who has to take the low road of sexual innuendo at every turn (not to mention how idiotic she has made people at the SGC look from taking down Daniel and the entire crew of the Promie to that unbelievably embarrassing scene before the senate committee).

Joe,
Just a concerned fan asking that you don't crossover the shows and characters next season. I think that Daniel and Carter are too important to sg1 to miss any of the episodes. They're my two favorite characters and I don't watch Atlantis. Please don't take them off sg1 next year.
