The search for Sci-Fi

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
How much is too much Sci-Fi and GateWorld in my daily life? THAT is the new question.

A few days ago my work added a new filter to the *Web-Sense* and now Message Boards and Journals/Blogs* are forbidden for our viewing pleasure. Well of course my first reaction was one of sheer disgust...LOL like They expect me to be able to WORK under these conditions!!!!! NO Sci-Fi Fix??? No GateWorld Fix??? ALL DAY!!!! OMG!!!Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

But I have of course since found ways to survive, albeit a bit gloomier but still I have my ways. Why well because I work on long...extremly long projects at times and periodically I need a break from them...so I stretch my legs and take 2-15 minutes playing somewhere and then get back to work. It makes my day less......... BORING!!!!

First the GateWorld MAIN page loads up just fine...so I was somewhat relieved to be able to read a bit-o-news. BUT I am a complete spoiler phobe so I can't read much past the General stuff.

Fan-Fiction can be found in the weirdest places. I normally read most of mine from a couple of LJ groups and a yahoo group and all of those are banned now. So I have been looking for some links to web sites rather than LJs or the like. I can read a book a day, so reading a Fanfiction can take me anywhere from 10 minutes to a day. If I find a really good one I will just minimize it and read bits about every two to three hours as a treat for myself and to give my brain a break Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting heaven knows my brain needs that sometimes LOL

So my search for little bits continues...........

I had a really sweet thing happen at work...sweet for my Hubs or so I thought at least.... I have what I call *The Porn Wall* in my Cube at work. This is the one wall that people have to actually walk into your cube and turn around to see. This is where I have all of my Sci-Fi pics. I won't bore you with all thats there ... but one picture is a really nice rendition of Ben Browder that Mala50 made for me and I printed it out. Well right below it I have a picture of my Hubs. An 8X10 of him in his Army uniform and he is 20 years old and the other day one of the gals at work came in my cube to admire *The Porn Wall* (as many of the gals at work are wont to do) and she asked where I got that really nice close up of Ben Browder from his younger days. I was like "Huh???" and she pointed to Hubs and said "This one?"
I smiled and said "Um that is my husband at 20" and she was agog...So I came home to tell Hubs he was mistaken for Ben thinking he would be all pleased..... Nope... he thinks Ben should be mistaken for him..... Now how does a wife argue with that???

However...this works in my favor now...I can now tell hubs that I think Ben is so good looking BECAUSE Ben looks like him...LOL... so hows THAT for figuring out a way to get Sci-Fi into my daily life..LOL... *wonder if I can get Hubs to wear leather pants and the leather duster around the house*...mmmmmmmmm (wink)

Anyway my search will continue for Sci-Fi...if anyone has a site they think I should check out put a link over there in that comments section. Keep this in mind though..I don't spoil...I LOVE Sg-1 & BSG, I love Fan fiction but I am a Shipper...yes Dorothy there is also love in this world and I mean to enjoy it ... So I read more of that. Oh ..who do I ship? Sam & Jack and Kara & Lee... thats about all for reading in ship. Otherwise I just look for good stories. I have never read any Farscape fan fiction but if its a John & Aeryn story I would probably check it out. I was happy with the conclusion of Farscape (the mini-series)

I wonder if I should post a sign *Starving Sci-Fi fan needs your links*...LOL

and as always.. find ways to make someone els's day better even if it means going out of your way and possibly inconviencing yourself... you will be amazed at how much better you will feel knowing you were a blessing in another person's life.

and that little gaterites..is *Enlightenment Tame Style*

EN GARDE!!

Image hosting by Photobucket

So tonight I will expound on Fandom and all of its fun.....Image hosting by Photobucket........LOL

Online fandom has its own unique set of problems and that was brought home to me today when I was trying to explain one issue that was going on today to my Husband. He got this *Deer in a Headlights* look on his face after about 5 minutes of explaination and then he just busted out laughing..Image hosting by Photobucket......yup rolling on the floor, hold your stomach, get tears in your eyes laughing.

Kind of made me go.."HHHmmmmm" and then I looked over my Blog and I realized just how many entries I have regarding instructions on how to just be decent to people when venturing out into Online Fandom. WOW ...I guess no is really listening are they? Well My friends are .......Image hosting by Photobucket..thanks guys!!

You know what it made me realize? It made me realize that the Moderators are kindof a "Mini-cosim" of the Forum as a Whole. I'll bet people out there had no clue that I am a hard-Core Vala Fan and SkyDiver really doesn't care for her character. MadeleineW is fairly Anti- Sam & Jack and I am a die-hard S&J Shipper, Gategipsy loves Daniel and I can take or leave him. Ship Mum ....well she likes everything I like ;-) Major Tyler is a huge Ford supporter and I am fine if he never returns to the show. Feli and I are Thunkers for RDA and Skydiver doesn't really thunk....I KNOW that was weird to me too (wink) Kiwigater is more reserved where I am more out-spoken.

Whats my point? My point is that WE ALL have things that we really don't see eye to eye on. And we are pretty passionate sometimes about our feelings regarding one issue or another, be it the show OR be it an issue we are discussing regarding the Forum. However, even when we get stupid and hurt another's feelings EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US is willing to stop and say wait a minute...I am sorry, I didn't mean THAT, I was addressing the issue NOT you personally and I am sorry if I came off wrong. Image hosting by Photobucket

On the flip side, I think MadeleineW, Gategipsy, Skydiver, Major Tyler, Shipperahoy, Kiwigater and Feli are amoung some of the MOST intelligent people I have had the HONOR of meeting either online or in real life. Regardless if I agree with them or not they have posted some of the most thought provoking posts I have ever read OUT IN the Forum. The fact that we might not agree or that we agree to disagree sometimes... has no bearing on what I think of them as people and I respect every single one of them as people in their own right. Period. They have a right to their own opinion, their own thoughts and a right to be heard. End of story.

That is the attitude that needs to all over the Forum.....Period....End of story.

What that amounts to is a group of people acting like grown ups....Yup! Grown ups!

I think Season 10 on SG-1 is going to great with the addition of Vala, I think Cameron Mitchell is, was and will always be the leader of SG-1 from now on, I think Sam & Jack need to kiss, hug, make babies and get on with the show, I think Daniel needs to have a girl on the show, I think Teal'c needs to *kirk* a bit, I think Landry needs to be more prominent and I think they need to get a new Doctor.

I think Season 3 on SGA will be good IF Sheppard and Weir have a few more moments, if Teyla and Ronan get to kiss, If Mckay STOPS saving the day all the frelling time and we have a little more TEAM ACTION and backstory on everyone.

OK...waits....... Image hosting by Photobucket......... OMG... the Earth did NOT explode...nor did lightening fall from the sky and fry me to a crisp in my chair. AND guess what...you don't have to agree with me either :-)

ShadowMaat.....take that thundercloud of yours back...you'll notice I left Lorne alone ...LOL

Now for those of you who think that you are gonna say stuff in my comments.....Image hosting by Photobucket.....LOL.... remember I can DELETE YOU!!! hahahahahahahaha ...

Oh Yeah Its Hiatus Time

Well we are FULLY into Hiatus.... I know this because the numbers of Forum visitors are down just a tad AND the natives are restless Image hosting by Photobucket Image hosting by Photobucket AND I have to think about what I want to write about here.

Most of my Blogs here center on the Forum and the episodes. I figure you get all the "News" at really better places....LOL
So since I don't have any new Episodes to write about ....well except Dr. Who...which I am COMPLETELY loving btw...that leaves the Forum and all you weirdos who post on there with me Image hosting by Photobucket cheers to us weirdos!!!

Sometimes I sit here in amazment as I read things and I have to wonder if people "actually" read what they just wrote... Oh STOP I do too read my blogs BEFORE I post them (here's where I need a NCIS smiley of the "head slap" hee hee).

Ok now that I have you all intrigued wondering if I am going to address anything in particular......... nope :-) I am more general is my amazement...LOL

Some of you are aware that the Moderators get a "talking to" by some our Forum Members from time to time.... by that I mean, people voice the things they are annoyed about and why the heck hasn't the Moderating Staff done anything about it. Well this is becoming an annual "Hiatus Happening" since last year during hiatus it happened. On the Forum we won't defend ourselves to any great extreme nor will we explain ourselves to any great degree. "Why is that?" I hear you asking. Well because the whole purpose for us being there is to NOT be a major player in your on-line fandom experience. We are the authority and we know our jobs, you don't. We also don't want to be just *The Mods* We don't want to "know you" just from a moderating POV. We would really rather know you because we, as members as well, have gotten to know any given person just by being in great discussions with them. Now here is where I stop using the word "we" cause this is just me here and contrary to popular belief all the Mods are not sitting in one room with a line of computers pointing and laughing at all of the extrememly strange posts...
US ->Image hosting by Photobucket....Image hosting by Photobucket <--- you

I have been around for a little bit and I have come to the conclusion that GUESS WHAT??? It really doesn't matter how long you have been writing on BB Forums nor been a fan of StarGate for it to matter how much your opinion should matter and be respected by other people. If you have just joined GW today. YOU are just as important as the person who has been a member since before "dirt was young". So alot of the hub-bub I read would be alleviated if people remembered that they are really no better then the "Newest Newbie". Sure they may know more about this particular Forum and yes they may know more people and have made some really great friendships but what brought them here to GW in the first place? Stagate and a love for the show. Now granted for some the show is no longer as "exciting" or as "well done" as in the early years BUT the Forum isn't the show. Its the Forum. A "meeting place" for ALL OPINIONS and discussions.

So when I see on "old-timer" having a cow or even a kitten over something silly a "Newbie" has done I just have to laugh because its A) silly to watch and B) its a Forum not Brain Surgery. So what if they get it wrong, so what if they ask silly questions, so what if they just don't get it at first. The Forum isn't a patient that is gonna die on the table because that person or even the "mob of newbies" didn't get it right the first time.

As an old-timer you already know it is gonna happen so why get your knickers in such a twist over it? Scroll over the dang post... I have yet to figure out WHY if it bugs you, you even reply to it. There are a bunch of people on this forum that it really does not bother and they like answering questions and feeling as if they are helping out a "new-guy" Let them do it and you can go on your merry way if it annoys the heck out you. The fact that you can't seem to allow the post to just scroll on by says more about your need to be "in charge" or assert your "something" then it ever will about how the new guy is silly.

As for the "Newbies". Well I won't assume that ALL Newbies have ever encountered an online Forum but for those that have not... why wouldn't you read the rules first?? THAT makes no sense to me in any way shape or form. Unless you are one of those types that tries to put your kids christmas toys together WITHOUT the instructions... well then....Image hosting by Photobucket we will just pity you ..LOL
But even for those that have experience with BB Forums why would you join here and NOT read the rules Image hosting by Photobucket I mean ...you are coming to a Forum to chat with other fans and be part of the overall "something" here so why wouldn't you at least try to find out what you are supposed to be doing??? No one says you can't ask questions of course. But I do laugh at some of them. Because if the poster had just read the rules well they wouldn't be asking ...LOL

My favorite line of all time is though..... I can't be bothered to read all of the posts before mine so..... and they ask for the regulars of a thread to bring them up to speed on the topic. I sit here and ...Image hosting by Photobucket ROLL!!!

You have just informed the entire thread that you can't be bothered to read the discussion that they have spent their time having BUT YOUR opinion should matter to them. THAT is so not the best foot to start off on. I can see asking that or even saying that in say an Episode thread or even in a Ship Thread...where the topic is pretty self evident and you can kind-of flow into the conversation But a thread that is having an actual discussion. ...man you must have an ego the size of Texas.

Many of the complaints I read regarding the moderating are actually "personal issues" and not so much "Forum issues". Some are valid and I know there is an effort to try to help people resolve these issues But some, lets face it, are petty. Two or more people have taken a dislike to another few and we have ourselves a "personal dispute". Now both sides think THEY are on the side of truth and justice so we should just swoop in there and kick those other people sorry butts for them and let them know whats what. Well what ends up happening is the whole lot of them *get it* and the dispute is gone and no one sees it. The ones involved of course remember it and so it is up to them to take a breath and move on. BUT I know I am not mother to any more than the two kids sitting here in my house. So I don't moniter every word written. What happens instead is ... yeah you guessed it they just end up doing it all over again. BOTH sides are at fault but that never occurs to them. Why? Well Because THEY are right of course....

You may have heard the old saying "Every time you point the finger at someone else, three fingers point back at you" What that means is... take a look at your own behavior first before you start claiming it is all "their" fault and you did nothing. Chances are you did even if it was just misunderstanding them.

I too am tired of alot of the negative stuff I see and read but what makes me laugh there is that the people I see complaining about it are some of the most negative people I have read on the Forum. Not negative as in rule breakers or "bad fans" as some would like to call them. No just negative about their opinions in alot of things. No one says its wrong and I would be the firs to say ALL OPINIONS matter. But I would ask one question. If all of the threads you hang out in are basically about the negative aspects of things, be it life, the show or what not.... how exactly were you expecting the positive to creep in? For some... this is how positive reacts upon meeting them ...Image hosting by Photobucket

On the other hand.. all of us psitive people need to chill out as well. Its not the end of the world if there is someone questioning the show OR our opinions. I mean geez.. if you are just a sheep following the band wagon of fandom Image hosting by Photobucket and can't express WHY you are happy about this or that in a decent, respectful way then you really ain't that positive.. Expressing yourself can be harder in the face of negativity BUT it isn't impossible nor does it have to be hostile.

Same for negative people dealing with the positive.... you aren't defending your King and castle here, just your opinion and if you can't do that without resorting to name-calling...well maybe you are dealing with issues that are farther reaching then just a show that is letting you down. Image hosting by Photobucket

The point here is NO ONE is better, not old-timers, newbies, positive or negative. We are all just a bunch of people that found each other because of a common interest, StarGate. It really is just that simple Image hosting by Photobucket

"What the Heck do we do NOW?"

Image hosting by Photobucket

HELLO!!!! Welcome back all you GateWorlders that went conventioning. I can honestly say that this year sounded GRAND according to all of the Con reports I have read and how about a "Round of APPLAUSE" for Darren and David and Kiwigater and Shipperahoy for some GREAT Convention coverage!!!!

and of course for me personally..... the BEST NEWS.... ok here is where any of you that DO NOT like the thought of Sam & Jack do this
Image hosting by Photobucket

Hee hee....of course its in no way confirmed and its just based on a few answers from the guests BUT possible Sam & Jack Shippers will get a positive resolution and THEN you know what that means....YES NO MORE pairing Sam off with "Dude of the Week" YAY!!!! Even if you don't like Sam & Jack ....maybe you can get behind that idea :D

and if you are someone who just completely abhors the idea....well I told you to cover your eyes and ears so SHOO Image hosting by Photobucket OUT of my comments box... LOL

DID you SEE Cliff without his shirt???? Image hosting by Photobucket

I had never really thought all that much about Cliff as a "Hottie"...well I WILL NOW!!!

Ok so anyway...moving on to more OR less Hussy and Shipper talk ... :-)
We are down to just three months till SG-1 and SGA begin new seasons and we are wondering "What the HECK do we do in the mean time?" Well I can tell you that the Forum has slowed down quite a bit. Not as many "impassioned" posts why this or that is better or worse and people are cooling off and discussing things with a bit more level-headedness. THAT is always a blessing for any of us. Many are going on the "Convention Circuit" and yet others are finding ways to keep us entertained during the hiatus.

One of those ways is FanFiction. If this is something you enjoy reading I highly recommend it. I am a Beta for one author and she is now just returning from an actual Writer's Conference. So if you do like to write AND you want to get serious about it and possibly make it a career. I really do recommend getting yourself hooked up with some of the latest technology has to offer. There are writers groups that meet online...YES I said ONLINE. My friend...Mei Mei as she is known on GateWorld is a romance writer and she is hooked up with a number of groups on and off line as well as attending numerous conferences this year. One of the major perks about this I have discovered from her....is many editors and well-known new authors are members of these groups and they will help you tighten up your writing for your given genre. However, writing FanFiction is a great place to start AND you have a willing audience for your stuff. All I can say to the fans of FanFiction out there is FEEDBACK...and it needs to be CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK. Don't try to re-write the author's story for them. They are the author and its their idea...if you think it should be different....go write your own..LOL..... but if you see spelling errors, sentence structure issues or context flow problems tell the author IN A NICE WAY! and if you like it ALOT tell them WHY. While every author loves to hear that you loved loved loved their story they like to know what made it so awesome for you as well.

Secondly do NOT go read stuff that you KNOW will annoy you. If you don't like ship...don't go read that only to go bash the author...thats just rude. Same thing for slash or any certain character. Go read what you know you will like. People this is FAN fiction and the person writing it is writing about things that THEY are a fan of. So you in turn should read what YOU are a a fan of.

Another thing you might want to do while you are waiting for the new seasons to begin... go read NEW threads in the Forum. Meet some new people.

Image hosting by Photobucket Hi my name is Tame and I play just about everywhere. See how easy that was? Find some new fun topics to read and discuss. Be part of what makes GW a fun place to be. All too often I read posts about how this or that person is so sick of this or that but as I read their post I think..."Well if you talked to me like in person...I would walk away" Keep in mind at all times that there is a PERSON sitting there behind their moniter reading the words you write so be mindful of your words...they represent you and can sometimes be the ONLY impression a person will ever get of you. Recently a lot of trouble was went to, to make a whole new group of Smilys...USE THEM Image hosting by Photobucket let people know when you are teasing, kidding, serious or trying to be silly. THAT can stop alot of headaches all around.

And to you new kids on the block....read those rules Image hosting by Photobucket

This will save you ALOT of hassles from the "Old-timers" that unfortunately are just rude enough to tell you that you have screwed up and you are a nOOb.

There will time soon enough for all of us to be out school with all of the day to day hassles of life making us crazy. Many of us don't have the "Work Hiatus" (which completely sucks btw) and then the new season will start and many will be filling their time with GW and discussing all the new happenings of the show.

My hope for you is that you will look like this Image hosting by Photobucket when enjoying GW instead of this Image hosting by Photobucket

and that little Gaterites....is "Enlightenment Tame Style" Image hosting by Photobucket
