DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!
SPOILERS for MAELSTROM AHEAD!!
Hi all :-) So if you know me at all you know I am a DIE-HARD StarBuck/Kara Thrace Fan as well as a HUGE Katee Sackhoff Fan and I was so happy to hear that finally this season we were going to be getting our *Starbuck* episode.
WOO-HOO!! StarbuckStarbuckStarbuckStarbuck, yes that was me just a few days ago.
Now, I have been reading up on ways to inflict pain without leaving any evidence. :-) ....I am just kidding......... sortof hehehehe
Okay...this is your last chance and warning...if you don't want to be spoiled for this episode turn back NOW.... I am not kidding..I am about to make you into curdled Milk if you read any further..so proceed at your own risk.................................
What the FRAK is Ron Moore thinking? Has he been drinking too much of that single malt of his? I mean how could having Kara *Starbuck, Kick Ass* Thrace commiting suicide be a good thing? Someone explain that to me as if I was a six year old (5 points to whomever gets THAT movie reference). At what point in that episode did they explain Kara's destiny? Did I fall asleep for that millisecond of exposition? Because I sure as heck never got a good understanding of just what her destiny was supposed to be.
How exactly was the writhing in the paint/sex/dream supposed to tell us anything? EXCEPT TPTB love to place Kara in sex scenes with EVERYONE AND their brother. How did the Oracle know what Leoben said word for word? What was the lesson Kara was supposed to have learned instead since her mother was so over-zealous in her "teaching"? What is the meaning of the Mendela(Mandela) however you say it, spell it, besides that it was so prominent to Kara? Was THAT her destiny? "Hey Kara, when you see the Gas Giant that looks just like this design, go fly your viper into it and you will fulfill your destiny" You Go Girl!! Kudos for you You did it !! YAY!
What the heck?
Then we are supposed to buy into the whole "Mom abused the living *bleep* out of this child to the point that we ALL know we would have stepped in to see her removed from that home and it was all just to help her overcome her fears of pain and death? HUH??? and Mom really wasn't so bad really...she didn't deserve to die alone..heck she only abused the child up to the point of brutality...but she didn't kill her..so let's cut mom some slack and go hang with her while she dies. THAT will solve ALL of Kara's emotional scarring for sure ...YAY thumbs up on that one :-)
Then we have the *Quadangle of Doom*. Ya know Moonligting was back in 1980's and many Sci-Fi shows and Mainstream Network shows have gone on to actually write *Strong-Willed Clashing, loving, conflicting* Couples that are FUN to watch and really interesting to watch. So I am kindof at a loss as to why this fantastic team of writers not only wrote this ........... well for lack of a better word .........Ridiculous Love Quadangle. First off there really was no reason to marry Kara off to anyone, except of course TPTB LOVE to put Kara in sex scenes with everyone (see above) and Katee is one of those few talented actresses that has on-screen sex-appeal with almost any actor she gets paired up with. (Claudia Black has that as well) But I hate to say that watching Lee and Dee was like watching cardboard molt. Those two have no chemistry, nada, zilch, nothing. Plus the character of Dee is not this *femme fatale* TPTB have tried to make her out to be. The actress has a hard time portraying that sort of role IMHO. As I watched her in other scenes, such as the *Bonus Scene* Sci-FI put up where she was joking around with Gaeta and goofing and laughing I realized that the actress is an excellent actress and the character of Dee is truly wonderful when she is written AS *Dee the YOUNG Woman* and not this Soap Opera character TPTB have made her into everytime she is on-screen with Lee.
And Lee...gads that poor character. He has gone through the wringer IMHO. The only time I have ever seen that character get tough and hold his own is when he is either on his own or on-screen with Kara. Apollo is meant to play off of Starbuck. Its the way its supposed to be. The characters and the actors just do it so completely well that it is not even a choice, you suspend disbelief withour even thinking about it. But for some reason TPTB don't or won't see it. If they do I am shocked that they would just throw away a dynamic that you just do not see on the TV every day.
Did I like the episode?? Let me answer it this way. I like Katee Sackhoff. I think she did a great job with what she had to work with. I think she deserves the Saturn Award for Best Actress. I think she deserves an Emmy for her work on BSG. So because of her I watched.
My enjoyment of BSG has been slowly dying this last season because it seems RDM is more enamoured with making *Shock TV* and a Political Statement than he is with just telling a good story, even if it has some *formula* in it. There is a reason there are patterns to Hit TV shows. There is reason they are HITS. Since I pay for my cable entertainment I expect to be entertained, not have life, especially *real life* told to me in some underlying way on a TV drama. If there is nothing to hope for, if there is nothing for me to look forward to, if the hero isn't going to get the girl in the end. Then why bother?
I already know that in real life things don't always work out and I get that lesson daily for free. I look to be entertained so I can ESCAPE from the pressures of daily life for that hour or two and root for the good guys and watch the hero ride off into the sunset with the babe at the end. I get to smile for a few minutes and be happy that in that make believe world someone conquered the evil that surrounds us.
So...I will see what happens with the rest of Season 3 and if Kara is truly gone...... we'll just have to see............
The best I can hope for is another writer is out there with yet another fabulous Sci-Fi show and wants to show us his/her stuff.... you know you are out there :-) don't be shy...we fans don't bite...we just nibble......a lot :-)
Take care ya'all!
