Actor J.R. Bourne reacts to a fan's question. Bourne plays the Tok'ra Martouf on "Stargate SG-1."

Life, Death, and Underwear
WARNING: The following contains a spoiler for Season Four's "Divide and Conquer"

J.R. Bourne and Jay Acovone took the stage together, and both appeared overwhelmed by the outpouring of fan support. Though it's a bit too late for Major Charles Kawalsky, a petition to keep the character of Martouf alive was posted for signatures on Saturday, and presented to J.R. on Sunday.

In addition, several audience members pleaded with the producers' panel to revive this much beloved character. Though I missed the moment, I'm told that even Amanda Tapping publicly (if jokingly) asked the producers when Martouf would be brought back.

J.R. Bourne is presented with a petition poster signed by fans, reading "Martouf Lives!"
I had the opportunity to meet J.R. briefly at the cocktail party on Friday night, and I was immediately taken in by his charm and warm personality. He seemed genuinely interested in what fans had to say, and always managed to stay on track with a conversation, even when interrupted. Shortly after I introduced myself, he asked where I was from; yet I had already handed my camera to a friend, and we paused to have a picture taken. Unfortunately, the disposable camera I had purchased was flawed; the flash failed to work.

Actor Jay Acovone speaks to the crowd. His character was killed off in the second episode of "Stargate SG-1," but has since made two appearances.
J.R. inspected the camera, as though he might actually be able to fix it, but I quickly tucked it away, realizing there was no hope. Luckily, a lovely lady from Germany jumped in to save the day, and has promised to mail me copies of the pictures. Somehow, after all of this commotion, J.R. remembered his question, and he made sure he came back to it, looking me in the eye and asking "so where are you from?" ... Forgive me, dear husband, but J.R. has a smile that about turned my knees to rubber!

I understand that Jay and J.R. had not met until moments before they came together on stage, yet they played off of one another brilliantly. They interacted with an ease even they acknowledged, stating they would love to work together some day; and the audience was kept very well entertained. At one point, someone asked the now almost obligatory question, "Boxers or briefs?" - to which both actors responded with proof. They actually undid their trousers to show the fabric underneath. Jay quipped that "today its boxers ... and to the left!"

Jay Acovone models a vest at auction during the GATECON festivities.
Jay was terrific throughout the con. He was funny and charismatic, and he appeared to thoroughly enjoy the attention of so many adoring fans. At the auction Saturday night, he stripped off his shirt to the whoops and hollers of his admirers, and modeled a vest donated by Bridge Studios. Making sure to net as much money as possible, he wandered through the crowd posing and flaunting his rugged, good looks. Then, true to his word, he climbed up onto the table of the winning bidder.

Apparently, Jay had as much fun that night as the rest of us. He overslept, and was late for the next morning's session!
