BATTLESTAR GALACTICA NEWS
Eick on Season Three story, Caprica spin-off

Battlestar Galactica's new season is full of surprises, according to executive producer David Eick. In an interview with iF Magazine, Eick gives fans insight into the conception and direction of Season Three and the new potential spin-off series, Caprica (story).
Eick revealed that the producers are taking the show in a new direction to try and capture a broader audience for SCI FI Channel. "The audiences, who haven't found the show and might like show, are the ones who have been kept at bay by the title or based on the network that we are on," he said. "These are the audiences I am trying to get to, and they're the ones who watch Sopranos, Nip/Tuck, ER, and West Wing. An audience that likes that kind of drama would like our show and watch it."
The evolution of the Cylons will be the driving theme of Season Three. According to Eick, "There is a general sense of a biomechanical history behind the Cylons, and there are various ideas and tangents that can spin from that principle. We will continue to investigate new Cylon forms."
The motivations and modus operandi will evolve as well presenting new challenges for the human refugees. Because the Cylons regenerate, killing them does not have the same repercussions, which gives the show a twist.
"They are going to have reevaluate certain judgments in their approach to humanity," Eick told the magazine. "One of the interesting things about the Cylon culture is it is difficult to hold grudges, even for something as extreme as braining someone with a giant rock, because you can't kill them. In fact, killing someone is not the worst thing you can do, because Cylons regenerate. It all has to be considered in a different way; it's not a 'Godfather' movie where if you kill someone it's a cardinal sin that starts wars."
Fans can look forward to the return of Lucy Lawless (D'Anna Biers) and Dean Stockwell (Brother Cavil) in Season Three. Lawless's character opens the religious issues of the Cylons to betrayal and revenge.
Eick describes the plotline as "a Cylon having a crisis of faith, and that crisis leads her character to a place where she becomes susceptible to betrayal by other Cylons. Her crisis leads to an over-correction that turns her into a Cylon heretic. That's all weird and interesting and very religious, and it adds a certain textured approach to the Cylons."
Battlestar Galactica has been so successful that a prequel spin-off, titled Caprica, is now in development. Caprica will tell the story of events some 50 years before the attack and will differ stylistically from Galactica. The new show will be, "much more romantic, and much more of a soap, [dealing] with a corporation and the man in charge of that corporation who in a very innocent and idealized way propagated the artificial intelligence technology that would later become [unbeknownst to him and those involved in the series] the Cylons," Eick said.
Both Galactica and Caprica will be on SCI FI Channel because, "They said, 'We'll buy it ... go write it.' So that is what we are doing."
