Diamond Select Toys and Collectibles and MGM have signed a licensing deal for the company to create the first action figures based on the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis television series, the companies announced today.
The 7-inch figures will be based on the likenesses of the shows' stars, including Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge. Specific figures and release dates will be forthcoming.
The detailed figures will be sculpted by Jean St. Jean Studios and Plan B, Diamond Select said.
Individual figures will retail for about $15 (U.S.), as with its current Star Trek line of 7-inch figures, the company told GateWorld.
"The Stargate universe is a perfect match for DST," Chuck Terceira, Director of Diamond Select Toys said. "We know the fans will love our attention to detail and commitment to delivering their favorite characters right from the show. Stargate has been incredibly successful and we knew it was time to take advantage of both shows' continuing popularity."
"We are delighted to partner with Diamond Select Toys to bring a range of Stargate action figures to market," Travis Rutherford, executive vice president of MGM Consumer Products & Location Based Entertainment said. "Their quality and attention to detail are renowned and make them the perfect partner for our premium sci-fi franchise."
Diamond Select Toys's current line of licensed action figures includes such hot genre properties as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, Marvel Comics, and Serenity. The company has also created such licensed items as statues, mini-busts, ship models, bookends, wall plaques, and more.
MGM originally announced that the cast of Atlantis was being digitally scanned for action figures more than a year ago (story), but quickly pulled the news off their official Atlantis Web site.
