The long-awaited DVD release of David Hewlett's darkly hilarious independent film "A Dog's Breakfast" has finally been announced! The movie will be available in North America (Region 1) on September 18, 2007 -- coincidentally the same day as Stargate Atlantis's third season -- and is currently busting up the pre-order charts at Amazon.com.
Hewlett plays Dr. Rodney McKay on Atlantis, and wrote, directed, and starred in the film.
Co-starring in the film are Hewlett's real-life sister Kate Hewlett ("Jeannie Miller" on Stargate Atlantis) and actor Paul McGillion ("Carson Beckett"). Rachel Luttrell ("Teyla Emmagan") and Christopher Judge ("Teal'c") also make appearances.
"A Dog's Breakfast" tells the story of a man -- and his dog -- who decides to bump off his sister's new fiance after they announce their engagement:
"If you've never been good at anything in your life, why would murder be any different? Patrick has always had a somewhat combative relationship with his little sister Marilyn. But when she brings home her new sci-fi-soap star fiancé Ryan, it's all out war. When Patrick fails to drive a wedge between the happy couple, he reaches for sharper instruments. Every family has a few skeletons in the closet; A Dog’s Breakfast is the nightmarishly funny mess Patrick makes when he tries to add another to his."

No information is available on the disc's final bonus features, but Hewlett did have this to say in his blog:
"We've provided Fox with some amazing extras for this thing. There's a mile-a-minute commentary track, deleted scenes (and these are full-on scenes that I ended up removing for time ... they're tons of fun, especially the extra Star-crossed pieces!), and Jane has produced a few incredible behind-the-scenes selections, as well. (These include interviews with Paul McGillion, Chris Judge, Kate Hewlett, Jim Menard (our cinematographer), John Lenic, Jane Loughman, and me ... David Hewlett!)
The film comes with a suggested price of $22.98. As of this writing, it is available at Amazon for $19.99.
There is no word yet on a release of the film outside of North America. Stick with GateWorld and the official "A Dog's Breakfast" movie site for updates!
