Watch the first Stargate Universe preview!

Friday - March 20, 2009
Category: GENERAL | Tags: ,

Beware of minor SPOILERS for the premiere of Stargate Universe in the clip and report below.

The first look at SCI FI Channel’s new fall series Stargate Universe has arrived! The 30-second preview aired tonight on the cable network, alongside the 2-hour series finale of Battlestar Galactica.

Check it out below (the Full Screen option is near the bottom right corner), and come back soon for screen caps and a higher quality version of the video. You can also watch it at SciFi.com.

In this clip, titled “Frantic,” a team of Earth scientists and military personnel are in the middle of an emergency evacuation to the uninhabited Ancient ship Destiny.

Nearly every main character can be spotted in the quick-cut video. Robert Carlyle’s Dr. Nicholas Rush is front-and-center, but also watch for clear shots of Chloe Armstrong (Elyse Levesque), Matthew Scott (Brian J. Smith), Eli Wallace (David Blue), Everett Young (Justin Louis), Tamara Johansen (Alaina Huffman), and Colonel Telford (Lou Diamond Phillips).

With the tagline “The only mission is survival,” the clip reveals the dark and dangerous tone of the series — a dramatic (pun intended) departure from Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. The challenge for SGU will be to do that while maintaining familiar connections to the established mythology of the shows that have preceded it.

Find out more about the show in GateWorld’s exclusive SGU Launch Center! We have details on the first 10 episodes of Season One, character breakdowns, an interview with actor Brian J. Smith, the first cast photo, and more.

Stargate Universe premieres this fall on SCI FI Channel in the United States.

(Thanks to the many, many fans who wrote in with this tip!)

  • Well that’s the 4D’s right there dark, dreary, depressing and derivative – I hope someone told them the world is going to hell in a handbasket and we need funny programming not bleak suicide inducing stuff.

  • Well they had a Lost Tribe in the Pegasus Galaxy, so the Asgard could have had a separate tribe in another Galaxy. Once you open that Rabbit hole, it’s hard to close it. Same thing with the Nox or the Furlings.

As for BSG 2, I’d just like to remind people that Lost is essentially the Drama version of Gilligan’s Island. Lost in Space, Star Trek Voyager, and Farscape all essentially started out with the same concept but produced different results. Just because this series will get a little darker, doesn’t mean it’s going to be bad. Do we really want a carbon copy of SG-1? If we do that, the franchise will grow old, become fatigue and die. Each new series does have to do something unique and good. If they all try to follow the same format, then one has to ask, why not just change the actors and continue the series like Law and Order or ER? So what if there’s younger actors? It’s not like characters will end up sleeping with each other, or become pregnant and talk about having an abortion or something like that. The tone of the series can be different.

  • Sorry if this has been asked before but as the clip doesn’t tell me the answer, does anyone know if Robert Carlyle’s character will be Scottish?

  • Preview looked cool, I really hope the show lives up to SG1 and SGA.

Something to note for all the people who are saying it looks like BSG2… well it was aired during BSG so I’m sure it was cut to appeal to the BSG audience. It could very well turn out to be dark like BSG, but I don’t think that necessarily follows from this small preview.

  • Stargate? Really? Can’t agree more that this looks like BSG. I really can’t stand that show. Thank goodness for Hulu, the iPod and DVD’s. If I wanted to watch dark dreary destruction all the time, I’d watch the news. I’d like to be able to escape that at least sometimes. Bring on the real scifi and not all this politically correct political propaganda. Why couldn’t they have made this new show about the Ancients creating the StarGates?

  • I don’t see anything here that makes me want to watch. Combined with my continuing angst over the way SGA was cancelled, it’s a safe bet to say I won’t be watching, no matter how dark and dramatic is is supposed to be.
The only one I have any interest in is LDP and I bet ya real money he’ll be killed off fairly early on.

  • Looks interesting i must say. although it does look INCREDIBLY dark for a stargate show. ohwel hopefully its good. Trailer has a BSG feel to it and ive just started watching that and i dont mind if theres similarities.

I do have 1 BIG question tho. how can they dial the ship. it MOVES surly any ‘STAR’gate address recorded in the milkyway galaxy would be very out of date. especially with the Ships current Point of Origin ???

  • so what if it looks dark? SGA got increasingly dark as the series progressed, and some people said it got better. Just wait and see, you guys might like the tone, this is only a promo. Plus, if you guys remember, wasn’t the Atlantis promos dark too? Didn’t they walk through the gate in a much darker room? They’re filming parts of the series in New Mexico. I can hardly say New Mexico is that dark, for one it looks a lot like Abidose. Once they turn on the lights, it’ll lighten up. Trust in the creators, and make your judgements after the first few episodes.

  • It looks too dark. I mean, what I loved about SGA was Atlantis itself, the airy corridors and open spaces, it didn’t feel like watching rats in a sewer. But this… I don’t know but nothing I’ve seen so far felt like Stargate to me. A ‘gate doesn’t a Stargate show make.

  • I think it’s going to be nice. Did you see the symbol on the jacket of the colonel? Its says: Icarus Base.

    Hmmmm….. whats up with that?

I think they are not supposed to be there. I think this is a gate error that send them there.

  • I think the sound is good , the look is new and not atlantis looking ( i miss atlantis) it better not be like BSG…thats slow, no graphics…just people…..stargate is better than BSG! I fear the show wont be that great but hey better than nothing and I will give it a watch…but i want asguard, i want bad guys, goul whatever i want a stargate true to sg1 etc.

  • you know why sg1 was huge….because of tilk (excuse my spelling) and daniel, Jack, Sam. Great characters with the Egypt IDEA…stargate went away from the goul..theme… SGU needs to have aliens and different worlds. period!

  • Taken a closer look at the gate, and i can’t see an symbols on the gate?!

Further more, the symbols represent starsystems to pinpoint a location in space. How can they create a stargate in an alien galaxy without knowing the stars? Will that be automated and this gate is symply not ready, but can only receive?

  • ok seriously im like a good fan of SG1 and recently…well since about Novermber last year started getting into SGA but…could some one explain why i can only ever count seven chevrons even on this new stargate (they changed the colour to give a signifying difference from both SG1 and SGA its the same thing SGA did)

  • Maybe I am just coming from a different perspective, but I really don’t see this as being a clone of BSG or a clone of Star Trek Voyager. I don’t see it as a clone of BSG. Battlestar is a show with a heavy religious mythology and rooted in a dark, depressing, violent mythos. We know the mythology this show is rooted in; but by nature it appears “darker” because its a less light-hearted premise. There is nothing to suggest there won’t be humor or light-hearted moments. But being in the situation they are, the plot of the show will inherently have some darker moments. I also don’t see this as being a ST:V clone either. Voyager was a show where the crew knew the risk they were taking heading out into the unknown and one they got stranded made a mission of heading home. I think this premise, of a team ending up somewhere strange and unexpected, but developed by a race we’re familiar with is a unique premise, and i hope people will give it an opportunity before rushing to judgment that its a clone and destined to fail. I think this is the right direction for the franchise to head, and I am excited

  • For those who read Stargate Horizon, this could be like it. Who knows, maybe there will be a replicator ship chasing after the Destiny. We don’t know, and it’s too soon to judge. Is it darker in tone, sure, but remember SGA was darker in tone. The ship in itself is dark, but that’s when they first arrived. Atlantis was dark when we first arrived. I’m sure the Ancients were smart enough to turn off their lights. It’s like parking their cars with their cars turned on. Entering a new base while it’s all dark just makes sense.

  • This looks like it could be decent. I’ll give it a chance. It’s definitely a departure from the prior two series…which is fine because they were feeling a little…inert (although Atlantis was just getting good when they axed it). It just kind of feels like a wannabe BSG which Stargate will never be and shouldn’t really try to be, either.

Honestly, though, it also feels like an Atlantis rehash with a much-needed BSG-style reimagining. I don’t know if that’s a good thing. I always wanted Stargate to get dark, but this just doesn’t feel right. I am quite unsure of this. I’ll give it a shot, though. Plus, Carlyle is a wonderful actor. How is this going to mesh with the other relatively PG-rated elements of the Gateverse? Is this going to devolve into corniness as Atlantis did in season two?

    Inter arma enim silent leges,
    ATMD

  • love it…. gettin pumped now….. I love this stuff…. give me more…

  • Instead of the Robinson’s being Lost In Space on the Jupiter 2 trying to find a way home with the villainous Dr. Zachary Smith, who turned out to be one who’s afraid of his own shadow, causing mischief along the way … SGU crew will be lost in the universe through a stargate on the Ancient’s Destiny desperately trying to find their way home. I don’t like the dark lighting, but I don’t like the dark tone of so much more death and treachery on the part of the SG teams. That’s the part that sounds least appealing to me. Don’t want another BSG … would have preferred SGU have been a more positive tone from the beginning with just new adventures out there. I will watch 1st episode to see how much I like or dislike.

  • Well Col Caldwell did say on the Atlantis Finale that the Odessy was on a secret mision that even he could not know. Well must be shipping personell and providing proyection for the Icarus Base. The new gate doesnt look to have symbols, maybe it needs to seed the entire galaxy before it can dial out who knows.

Its a good thing to change the premise of the show, a new direction for stargate was needed, ill decide after i see the pilot.

  • LOST in Stargate. I like it now. Gimme moar teasers, trailers and videos. Pleeease!

    WOW – in one word.

  • ummmm i can i say cloverfield? to much camera movement i got a headache

  • I always hated how the Stargate writers copied whatever movie was popular at the time–sometimes borrowing whole chunks of plot. Now they’re doing for an entire series. You can just imagine the writers seething at all the critical praise heaped on BSG when Stargate’s been overlooked for decades. I’ll bet they couldn’t ditch SGA fast enough and start working on a “real” drama, now that BSG’s paved the way.

But the geeks who kept Stargate afloat all these years watched as much for the concepts as the characters. “Scientists solving problems” has always been the core ingredient to the Stargate formula. If they turn it into YET ANOTHER “soap opera with metal walls” they’ll lose all the actual SF fans like me. If I want to watch a show with nothing but character development, I’ll watch “Sense and Sensibility”. MANY episodes of BSG were getting pretty close to that territory.

  • I am not going to watch this. Canceling SG-1 and then Atlantis (how could they canel Atlantis?) was a big mistake. I am sure this show will be canceled during the first season.

Lets all boycot this show and hopefully they will bring Atlantis back.

  • Hahaha….Milo your comment was halarious “I am sure this show will be canceled during the first season.” so you solution is “Lets all boycot this show and hopefully they will bring Atlantis back.”…..Right on..im sure by showing no interest in SGU that will force the hands of the studios to bring back a show that was cancelled becuase there was a lack of interest. i say, we’ve got a smart one here
