Tonight on Syfy Stargate Universe continues with an all-new episode! We’ve been waiting eagerly for months to see “Time,” which looks to be a creepy, mind-bending time twister. The eighth episode of the new series was written and directed by Universe co-creator Robert C. Cooper.
Here’s a sneak peek at the episode! Watch out for significant SPOILERS below, particularly in Syfy’s full episode description …
From TV Guide:
An away team finds a kino beside a Stargate on a jungle world, which contains video footage of the team that was shot prior to their arrival. Then, an illness cripples the team, forcing them to quarantine themselves on the planet.
From Syfy:
Visiting a newly discovered jungle planet, the crew is amazed to recover a Kino by the gate. Downloading the Kino data, Eli discovers video of the team, which appears to have been shot during an earlier visit. The mystery of the video’s origin becomes a secondary concern as members of the team start falling ill. Unable to return to the Destiny for fear of spreading the infection, the team sets up camp in the jungle to try to isolate the infection there. Little do they know that when night falls, the illness will be the least of their worries.

“Cos these are the days of our lives
They’ve flown in the swiftness of time
These days are all gone now but some things remain
When I look and I find – no change”
It’s almost like Queen wrote this song in Parody of SGU.
I kind of like the references to Star Wars and the other older sci fi shows they’ve used so far. It reminds me of “Chuck” and the 80’s ad 90’s references that those writers use. It helps lighten the show up a bit. I hope they kill off some of the cattle tonight. Right now there are too many nameless people milling around. We aren’t going to get to know 90 people, lets kill a few of them off!
I heard this was going to be a good episode so I tuned in. I really shouldn’t have bothered as it turned out as awful as the others I watched. I think for me it’s the characters. I couldn’t care less about any of them. The writers can put in as much action now as they want and it won’t make the slightest difference to me. On previous shows I connected and liked the characters instantly and would be distraught at the thought of any of them dying. In Time I couldnt have cared less if half of them died. They can tweak this show now all they want but I’m done with it. I just have no interest in this bunch of annoying, irritating and boring characters.
I thought this was a huge improvement over previous episodes, this one made me feel more optimistic about the show. More action and cool sci-fi concepts. Dont care about character-drama myself, just the stories/concepts and this delivered that so im happy.
Okay. This proves it. This episode was AMAZING. And the SGU nay sayers that say that even this episode sucks they have just proved that no matter what the show did they would hate it. This episode had great sci-fi story, great camera work, great acting and really great mood to go with the story. The nay sayers hated the sex-romantic scenes in previous episodes and wanted more of, what they call, sci-fi elements. Well there were no romantic parts and the story was “totally sci-fi”.
The previous episodes were nothing compared to this one. This one actually rivals the best episodes of both SG1 and SGA. Previous episodes didn’t, they were shifting from all right to good. This one was AMAZING, IMO.
Nikst Why do you care what others think of the show. Why does every SGU thread disolve into attacking the people who don’t like this show. If you love it good for you but please respect other peoples opinions. I tried this episode because I thought I may come to care about these characters more, but I didnt. The characters are the most important part of the show for me. If I don’t like them why would I care what happens to them. Just because the writers have suddenly infused some action into the show doesn’t make it any better because the characters are all the same. They don’t come close to the previous two amazing casts for me.
@blackhawlk: Okay then. Let’s be honest. How many episodes of SGA or SG1 did it take for you to care for the teams? SG1 for me took better part of the first season. SGA kind of came in parts. McCay who I loved eventually took almost the entire first season for me to care about him. First he came off as an arrogant prick. But now he is one of the characters I love the most, only second to Jack Oneil and perhaps Daniel Jackson. Now when I look at the first season of both shows I care about the teams from the very first episodes. But I built up to that.
The only people that I was aiming my comment at were the ones that thought that this episode sucked like the rest. If you didn’t feel that this episode was at least an improvement then yes I was talking about you. Otherwise the comment wasn’t aimed at you. I’m not saying that you have to have loved it or even thought it was really good. But if you don’t even think that it is an improvement and that you didn’t at least have some things in it that you thought was good then that, IMO, is proof that you from the start were set on disliking the show.
This episode was slightly better but was still weak. The kino camera action was annoying. The characters are still worthless and weak. I did enjoy seeing most of them die, however. The plot was weak and the ending was an easy stroke of the pen. The tie between the ailment and the creature’s venom was a silly plot tactic that stretched things beyond reason. How convenient. The boo hoo scene with Eli and the blond Lieutenant reacting to Cloe’s death was silly. The only one I have respect for is the Marine Master Sergeant (who should be addressed as Master Sergeant and not Sergeant, by the way) even though there is no way a guy that young would be an E-8 in the military. Best line: “What happened to short bursts?”
Finally, after 7 duds in a row, it seems the shows writers got something right. This was the first episode of SGU that I was able to actually sit through, and dare I say it, enjoy. Still, it was far from being great or even very good. But I would say that it was above average, and definitely the best episode so far.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
The Good.
What really made this episode good is that it was everything the previous episodes were not, and at the same time it was nothing like the previous episodes. First of all, it felt like a Stargate episode. It brought back the time honored tradition of travelling through the Stargate, exploration, facing danger, and beating that danger back. The plot was pretty strong. Although time travel is nothing new to Sci fi or Stargate, I thought it was still pretty interesting. There were no cheap sex scenes. For once Chloe did not seem like a spoilt brat. We didnt see her whine about her sex life. Col. Young actually acted like a leader. Dr. Rush actually manages to get through an entire show without screaming, and was actually more realistic. Also, for once he seemed to place more emphasis on finding a solution, rather than simply giving up. And at one point, he actually seemed to be willing to take a chance that could either kill him or save everyone. Oh, and did I forget to mention that this episode actually felt like Stargate . Eli is a pretty good actor if you give him the right script. The part where Eli talks about his mother was touching, and for the first time in the series I actually cared about him. There was more character development in those 2 min than all of the previous episodes. The writers should follow that example if they want us to get more involved with the characters.
The Bad
The kino. They have to stop their obsession with this thing. Seriously, it got so irritating within 5 min. They could have shown it like they were looking at the kino footage initially and then changed the screen to normal. It got even worse when they changed to night vision. I dont know if it was me, but that set looked fake and cheap. Surprisingly, both Atlantis and SG-1 had more realistic outdoors sets, despite a cheaper budget. The pace of the show was still lacking. Atlantis, and SG-1 managed to create a sense of urgency, that created suspense and excitement. Instead, this show had a documentary, reality show kind of feel to it, but it did not make you sit on the edge of your seat. Also the whole Greer episode did not make sense. It wasnt clear exactly why Greer broke down. It seemed unnatural and uncharacteristic of him.
The Ugly
Man, those creatures were freakish, but in a good way. The part where the creatures burst out of people (a ripoff of alien) was violent, and probably scared some kids if any were watching. Still, overall an okay episode. They need to have more episodes like this. Unfortunately the next episode seems to once again be about communication stones. But I have some more hope now.
I felt what you call “character development” was too blunt, and didn’t keep with the subtle way it was done in the previous episodes – fact some people didn’t notice how much real character development was in the previous episodes is sad. However seeing how all is reset at the end of the episode, and the situation in which they where in, I can forgive them, and hope the show returns to the awesome subtle way of the previous episodes. Still liked it very much! I wonder what the ratings will be for this one.
On second thoughts though (while watching it for the second time) I think the subtelties are still there – apart from the blunt “I’m this and that” talking.
Long time Nay sayer and SGU hater.. To start with, I was visiting (yet again, yes, I am not antisocial), and decided to watch the episode. Okay, it was better than the previous excuses for Stargate, but as much as it did captivate me, hasn’t this time loop/ imminent danger thwarted by “message in a bottle” been whipped to death before? also when i saw everyone dying, I thought there would be an episode titled “Medicine” in the future. I was also afraid that someone might suggest everyone have wild sex, “’cause the endorphins released while having sex, actually kills the bug” explanation. Still, the arc is still so elongated, it looks like a straight line XD.
I’m confused. This episode kinda dead-ended. In watching the previews for next week I did not see anything related to the end of this episode, yet this episode did not really have an end. I cannot believe that SGU is almost to an end for the season and we still don’t have a grip on it. In my opinion it’s a big mistake to split this up. Maybe after it had been on for a couple of years….. I’m not a big fan of this show yet but for the reviewer who compared it to “V”, she is off her rocker. I expected “V” to Ve so much better. It is only a little less corny than the original so far.
I would suggest reading the posts about this episode on the forum there like miles ahead of these comments lol
Anyway I enjoyed this episode, like others have said it did have a more “Stargate” feel to it than the episodes previously. This one had: sci-fi elements, action & hostile aliens which is what some people have been saying the previous episodes lacked.
Some people picked up on the end being a cliffhanger: What more do we need to know?
Its easy to create your own explanation and assume that LT Scott’s plan worked: He sends the Kino through the Stargate to the past with the new info, The Destiny arrives at the planet and the team find the Kino, They watch the footage and follow the clear instructions Scott left on how to cure the virus and since they know what to do and have time to be able to do it nobody dies. Do we really need another episode to see that?
David Blue’s acting portraying Eli was just amazing in this episode. The scene right before when Chloe died reminded me of the emotion you used to feel between O’Neill & Carter, it could bring a tear to your eye lol.
Kinda agree on the Kino cam though, it was used a little to much in this episode and did get annoying at times. I personally would have preferred if it was first established that it was Kino footage but then see it normally and not always from the Kino’s perspective.
