They don’t make letters big enough to properly label this as a RUMOR, but we thought we would pass it along with a “Reader Beware” warning label.
Though they don’t cite any concrete sources we have been able to find, several sites are reporting the rumor the Jason Momoa is one of three actors in consideration for the title role in a new Conan movie. The origin appears to be this story at Deadline Hollywood, which states that Momoa and Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen) are in the running for the role.
Other sites (equally unsourced) suggest an unnamed third candidate under consideration.
Momoa played Ronon Dex for four seasons on Stargate Atlantis.
Ronon Conan is a reboot of the classic fantasy film franchise that gave Arnold Schwarzenegger and his rippling muscles their big break. Director Marcus Nispel is planning to start production in Bulgaria in March, according to the site. It will be produced and released under a partnership between indie Nu Image/Millennium Films and Lionsgate.
Will Ronon become Conan? If Momoa does end up cast in the role, we’ll bring you the news! In the meantime, watch for the actor in the pilot episode of HBO’s new series Game of Thrones, which recently completed filming and should air next year.
What do you think? Does Jason have what it takes to be The Barbarian?
(Thanks to Kevin at Fused Film for the tip!)
Although I’m happy for Jason and I hoe he gets the part, I’m pretty tired of reboot-mania. These reboots tend to be terrible. JJ Abrams’ Star Trek comes to mind. More plot-holes than explosion in that movie, and that’s saying something. I’m cringing at the thought of the upcoming Highlander remake, since I LOVED the original movie. I mean, for gad’s sake, they’re making an A-team movie!!! Wel, the actors from Atlantis seem to be moving on. I know there’s been no official word on the Atlantis movie, but I bet the status of the Atlantis sets would be a… Read more »
Yikes, I need to learn to type. hoe should be hope, explosions should be explosions, wel should be well…
[…] in the newsosphere, I read a rumor today that Jason Momoa is on the short list for the title role in the new Conan the Barbarian movie. You may not be […]
It’s so good to see our ex-heroes getting more space in the entertainment industry. Joseph Mallozi has also reported it: http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2010/01/14/january-14-2010-jason-momoa-the-new-conan-he-should-be/
There has been no indication or official statement that the sets for Atlantis have been dismantled or the film canceled. All-in-all they continue above the ground for the time being and the productions paused.
Excellent books. Hopefully excellent shows. :D
I like the actor. Hopefully he gets the job, I think he’ll make a good fit.
Yay Jason! Hope he gets the role.
@cupermacleod and Gateworld: This isn’t necessarily a reboot, the Conan character comes from several Robert E. Howard stories. Therefore it could be simply *another* adaptation that’s hopefully closer the original author’s work. I like Arnold but I never thought he was all that great at Conan. It is sad that people automatically think of his portrayal when it comes to such a classic franchise. I myself picked Jason Momoa for playing Conan quite some time ago and everyone I talked to thought I was crazy. I hope he gets it, he’s perfect for it.

LOL! No matter how much you say so, there would be someone saying is a fact.
If it is true, I hope Jason gets the role.
No offense to Jason Momoa but I’d probably decline the movie. The last work from the director was the horrible friday the 13th redux. Not the least of which my computer tells me Jason Momoa’s official website has malware on it.
So a rumor of a remake of a B movie.. If you have time go watch the Conan Movie(s) very cheesy… of course my wife loves them.. lol
I think Jason Momoa will make a perfect Conan, and I’ll enjoy seeing the film! (Power of positive thinking, right?)
According to the JustJared site, the 3rd actor considered for this role is Jared Padalecki. I love Jared but I just can’t see him in this part. Jason Momoa on the other hand would be awesome. On SGA he swung his sword like nobody’s business and I think that his Conan would be more… human than Arnold’s robotic one. It also helps that compared to Arnold, Jason is drop-dead gorgeous ;)
For a moment there I thought Momoa was up for a hosting gig as a late night talkshow host!
Apparently, Ronan will be Conan.

There is no actor I think of that fits the role of Conan more than Jason Momoa. I heard he got the part!
