Principal photography on the second season of Stargate Universe kicks off today, with the cast and crew reassembled at The Bridge Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The show was renewed for a full, 20-episode season late in the fall. Viewers have only seen half of Season One so far, with the back ten set to air beginning April 2.
The producers of SGU promise that the second half of this season will deliver on the things fans are wanting most: aliens, space battles, and a deeper look at the men and women who populate the Destiny. (For much, much more on that, check out Joseph Mallozzi’s very interesting blog posts from late January.)
The season premiere, “Intervention,” promises to start off on the cliffhanger where the two-part season finale, “Incursion,” will leave off. But “Pathogen” — currently slotted fourth in the new season — will shoot first.
Two new staff writers join the production team for Season Two: Remi Aubuchon (Caprica, 24) and Linda McGibney (Homicide: Life on the Street) (story). Paul Mullie and Joseph Mallozzi have also been promoted from consulting producers to executive producers.
Series co-creators Brad Wright, Robert C. Cooper, and executive producer Carl Binder also return.
Season Two is expected to premiere worldwide in the fall. Keep track of everything we know about next season in GateWorld’s episode guide!
Yay, season 17 of stargate!
But how come MGM is happy to spend money on more SGU but not on SG-1 and Atlantis movies?
(@Jimmy007 I totaly agree with you) HEY MGM we want Stargate Atlantis MOVIE
Congrats to Paul and Joe on their promotions!
I also vote for another SG-1 or ATL movie. I’ve got money burning a hole in my pocket for those new DVDs. :-) Waddaya say?
Good for SGU, but there’s going to be some people who read this and wish it said “SG-1 and Atlantis movies filming now underway”.
Just saying.
Awesome.
@Jimmy007
MGM sees SGU as a safer long-term investment because it is an ongoing television show with new episodes being produced, while the movies would just be one shot deals. Let’s just hope that MGM gets a new owner and doesn’t go bankrupt.
I guess I’m with Jimmy007, the news just makes me want to see the SG1 and SGA movies underway.
Good, I much prefer SGU to “new” movies of the old series that will just be two hours of the same old stuff.
Great point about wasting money on SGU and not doing the SG-1 and SGA movies. Promotions? Right. Promoted for bringing the Stargate franchise down several notches. What a world.
Maybe they have heard the voice of the fanbase that have made the franchise over the years and now are going to at least attempt to make SGU seeem part of the franchise. I hope the new season is watchable and the new writers will actually write a story about some likeable characters. Or maybe this announcement is just a hype with nothing really being changed. I will give the show a second chance and hope for the best.
I think that this is a good move for then, with the addition of the writers and the promotion of Paul and Joe, this should make it so there is more of the Startgate that the fan base, most of the people here will relate with. Great news!
I’m with the people who would prefer it if they just made the SG1 and Atlantis movies like they promised they would.
MGM is bankrupt right now and dose not have the money to make more movies. Syfy is providing the money to make SGU but not any movies at this time. The 2 SG-1 movies were made with money provided by MGM. Timewarner and Lionsgate are the 2 companies competing to buy out MGM. MGM if I remember right is 4 billion in debt. So maybe whoever buys MGM will make a new SG-1 or SGA movie, hopefully.
Movies for me too please ^^
I won’t be bothering with the back-half of Season 1 of SGU since they had already written and filmed it, so I doubt it’ll change much from what we’ve already seen overall.
If Season 2 is improved/changed significantly and worth watching, it pains me to think that I might have to go back and watch the S1 second-half episodes :/
Anyway… Atlantis movies please :)
I don’t know if I even want to bother with the second half of season one, let alone a second season. I was VERY disappointed in SGU. Give me more SG-1 and Atlantis movies. Forget SGU!
@ allen charles
“I hope the new season is watchable and the new writers will actually write a story about some likeable characters.”
I don’t think that they will suddenly turn unlikeable characters into nice ones. They won’t change their style, so I would stop hoping and watching.
i think they should forget about a 2nd season and end this with a movie. they should just focus on making movies period now.
@ psw
You maybe right about that. I was hoping when the first half of season one ended that these characters would somehow redeem themselves later on in the season or series but the more I think about them the harder it is for me to believe they can become as likable as the chracters we saw in SG-1 and Atlantis. I’m afraid I just don’t like them very much. I’ll keep watching even though I’m not that happy with the show.
I’m prob one of the biggest scifi nerd out there and yes the first half of the season was rather horrible but have none of u seen the trailers for the second half? It looks amazing with all the space battels and aliens i’m sure u all loved from atlantis and SG1. the series was geared towards drawing in a younger audience which i’m sure they realized was a poor idea. I’m a fan and i’m not gonna stop watching untill they totally butcher the series which so far they havent done.
Especially that newest trailer looks amazing!
However, they already had finished filming the second half so whether or not it has a more entertaining and exciting paced (ie action, space battles) or not remains to be seen… The problem with trailers is that the majority of clips could just be from 1 or 2 episodes, and the reason the episodes may just be more of the same soap opera drama from the first half of the season.
Time will tell!
Aren’t all scifi shows except probably SGA basically space soaps?
@ Stunner
I’m guessing that you mean space operas. And all three stargate shows are space operas.
