Destiny‘s mission will come to an abrupt end this season, with Syfy Channel announcing today that it has canceled Stargate Universe after two seasons.
The news was first announced by Syfy’s Craig Engler via Twitter (first reported by Deadline.com). “Syfy will end its original action-adventure series Stargate Universe when the show returns with the final 10 episodes of its second season in the Spring of 2011,” Engler said. “The Stargate franchise — consisting of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe — has aired on Syfy since 2002.
“Syfy has a slate of new scripted projects lined up for 2011 including the series premiere of Being Human on January 17, the recently green lit one-hour drama series Alphas, and the much anticipated Battlestar prequel pilot movie, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. Warehouse 13, Eureka, and Haven will also return with new seasons next year.”
Stargate Universe premiered in the fall of 2009 with a larger cast and a very different style from the two previous incarnations of the long-running franchise. Series creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper expressed a desire to do something different after producing over 300 hours of Stargate, and crafted a third installment for the franchise that was a gritty, more realistic character drama.

The series premiered in front of more than 2.3 million viewers in the U.S., but fell to less than 1.5 by the end of the first season. Syfy attempted to revitalize the viewer base with a move to Tuesdays — a successful night for its top-rated summer shows Eureka and Warehouse 13. The move ultimately proved unsuccessful, with SGU averaging less than 1.1 million viewers (Live + Same Day) so far this season.
SGU‘s Tuesday night lead-out companion, Caprica, was canceled in October after faring even worse in the 10 p.m. time slot.
The production team members have been focused on finishing Season Two and securing a third season, and so far haven’t publicly suggested any plans for a fourth Stargate television series. (Cooper departed Universe earlier this year.)
The 2011-2012 season will mark the first time in 14 years without new episodes of Stargate airing.
The final ten episodes of SGU will air in the spring, picking up where the mid-season finale left off, with “Deliverance.” The second season finale has already been filmed, and is expected to end on a cliffhanger.

Can’t say i’m surprised about this. It’s not like it was completely unexpected. Perhaps Stargate should go on rest for a couple of years until NEW writers and NEW showrunners get involved, and can make something that properly honors the franchise (pre-SGU). Doubtful if we’ll ever see the light of day for either the 3rd SG1 movie, or 1st SGA movie.
^ We have the only fandom where fans gloat about the newest series in the franchise getting canned. I’m honestly ashamed to be a part of it sometimes.
For those who kept winging about the show and are now happy it’s gone; bare in mind that you will have NO Stargate for a very longr time, enjoy sitting alone and watching your Atlantis episodes over and over. ;)
This sucks, SGU was getting better and i really hoped that they would renew it for a third season.

NO, NO, NO… THEY DID IT… THEY CANCELED IT…DAMN THEM…DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL (FALLS ON FLOOR CRYING) why would they do this to the Stargate Franchise its the only thing that is watchable on “the channel that shall not be named”
i think this is unfair to all the viewers online and worldwide and im saying that because i don’t have cable or a DVR and because the barely even gave the show a chance…from this point on im going to not watch any show on “the channel that shall not be named”
I don’t care what all the haters say. SGU was and is an EXCELLENT show! Great acting, writing, and everything else, great science fiction! You suck syfy channel. It could have been just as big as Sanctuary if it had the same time slot, and it’s a much better show than Sanctuary, hands down.
Wow, this sucks. The longer success of Universe was probably going to contribute to MGMs and SyFy’s decision for the SGA and SG-1 movies.
i hope, somewhere down the line, the sgu saga will be allowed to finish their story, *for the fans*.

No more new Stargate in production at all… Abrupt end to one of my favorite franchises ever. Heartbroken.
Trouble is the last 10 eps are wrapped up and end on a cliffhanger.
Also I heard if a dvd movie is offered to the SG franchise, the SGU has the priority and writers preference. So SG1 & SGA fans will be suffering either way…… as they did by having this show shoved in there face because the writers wanted to.

This is really sad to hear. I actually liked SGU a lot. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. They should at least get half a season after this one ends so they can wrap up the story properly. You know, for those of us who actually cared about the franchise.
WOW, I’m very bummed. I thought we’d get a low budget season 3 and no 4.
I won’t miss SGU.
However the network has given us more than just a little hope about Stargate continuing. They made an effort to keep the rights to the series despite the bankruptcy and space made for a couple of movies and another series.
What is needed now is to clean house. SGA was cancelled because they thought they could spike ratings with a new series… And while I don’t agree running SGA into the ground that ending was alot more merciful than this one.
So – Stargate is dead. Damn… this sucks. It’s been around for so long, and it’s been part of my life for so long that this seems like it’s almost impossible. I don’t even know how to express what I’m feeling right now. This is gonna get really bad once it truly sinks in.

if they moved it back to Friedays for the 2nd half of the 2nd season i’m sure it’ll do better. but i hope Syfy will change their minds if it does better in the 2nd half. so watch it and get those ratings up so it can return for a 3rd season.

SGU was the only television series still in production that I was regularly watching. I loved this show.
Those of you gloating about it being canceled come off as pouting children who just got their way.
First…there is no way they’ll sacrifice shows like wrestling and Sanctuary that are doing better just to keep SGU alive
Second…SGU started out with poor rating for a pilot. The reviewers weren’t completely on board but wanted to see more and once they did we never heard from them anymore. The remaining critics were Fan oriented blogs or special interest (sci fi/stargate specific)
A said day for all of us, but why the heck is Syfy the one pulling the strings here? If I’m correct, the show had fantastic ratings in Canada, on Space. Just because the people in the US don’t like it that much shouldn’t mean the end for this great series. Can someone enlighten me please?

Well…that means I will not be watching Syfy anymore…I was only watching Sanctuary b/c Stargate was still on. All I got left is Supernatural. Hopefully that will stay on a little longer. The bright side to this is I now have one more hour to use elsewhere…and no real reason to have Direct TV anymore.
This might not have happened if they’d had less sex, more aliens and less earth-based episodes. I really hope another network will buy out the rights to do a third season. Didn’t TPTB say they’d need six seasons to tell this series’ story? I want to see the entire story…and not rammed into one final episode (i.e, Unending, which I’m sure was a testing ground for what would later be re-used, in a sense, in Stargate Universe), or two movies (AoT and Continuum) that were FAR too short and missing a lot of pivotal scenes that could’ve really made them… Read more »

I am not surprised at all. Don’t get me wrong, I love Stargate Universe. It’s just SyFy doesn’t know how to run anything anymore. Seriously, the first sign was not maintaining a concurrent schedule for SGA after the winter break. Fans had no choice but to download it via torrent since Europe was ahead of the schedule. Second, the stupid “name change” from SciFi to SyFy (totally unnecessary). Third, moving SGU from Friday to Tuesday so they can make room for wrestling. Great job execs. Well that does it, I’m completely done with the Sy-Fy channel. They keep adding stupid new shows and don’t support the good shows they have. They gave SGU and Caprica a bad Tuesday night spot, so what did they expect? Solong Sy-Fy, I’m not coming back for ANY of your shows!!!
This is very sad news indeed. Why didn’t they at least try moving it back to Friday rather than just succumbing to “low ratings” and killing the show entirely?
And with the massively lame series finale BSG had plus the dull as dirt mess that was Caprica, why the hell are they trumpeting the third installment in that franchise as if it’s something to be excited about?

Well this is very disappointing. I’m not really surprised, but I am disappointed. As timzen said, I thought they might do a low budget season 3. I guess not though. I swear all you SGU haters had better not keep gloating now that you’ve gotten what you wanted. What exactly did you think was gonna happen when SGU went off the air? That Atlantis would magically come back? Let me give you a reality check, Atlantis was getting stale fast. I think we should boycott the other Syfy shows. We should avoid watching their new shows altogether, and stop watching their current shows. And if there is a particular show on Syfy you just don’t want to stop watching…watch it somewhere else. Hulu, or iTunes, or whatever…since apparently the number of views and downloads from online sources don’t count for much. If enough people stop watching any Syfy shows on Syfy as a response to cancelling SGU, maybe it will have some kind of impact….maybe a SGU renewal, or at least some kind of new Stargate…whether it be a new… Read more »
Like some of you I must admit that I’m not surprised the series has been cancelled. But it is a shame, it seemed like it was starting to pick up and get interesting. Perhaps we may see something of it in the future? Perhaps not. We shall see.
Yet another bullet pointed example of why basing your programming solely on ratings is the worst idea ever. Way to go NBC/Universal. Just keep alienating your prospective viewers.
