Without further ado, here is your intro to Season Nine, including links to everything related on GateWorld.
SG-1 got a new lease on life in its ninth season. The Goa’uld and the Replicators had been defeated and Richard Dean Anderson departed the show, and the producers kicked off a brand new story with the introduction of the Ori, as well as a new member of the team: Ben Browder as Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell. And with actress Amanda Tapping away on maternity leave, the year also started out with the return of Claudia Black in a 6-episode run for Vala Mal Doran.
After Earth inadvertently makes contact with another galaxy, they draw the attention of a race of evil ascended beings — distant cousins of the Ancients, but diametrically opposed to their non-interference philosophy. Now the forces of the Ori have the Milky Way Galaxy in their sights, and are sending ahead emissaries called Priors to convert whole planets to worship them. Meanwhile General Hank Landry takes command of the S.G.C., and the newly-birthed Free Jaffa Nation struggles to hold on to their hard-fought freedom.

seasons nine and ten had a lot of great episodes but were what i like to call time to milk the show seasons. i had and still have a theory that if there was a season 11 or 12 we would have seen jesus as a ancient. and dracula as a wraith. the story got a lot weaker with the inclusion of the ori. merlin, camelot, excalibur? make the ori strong enough to the point where our human tech that took 8 seasons to achieve was like throwing marbles at a tank. i did not hate these seasons but they… Read more »
I must Agree with grif … I don’t like to say the show went down hill from season 8 but for me it kind of did, Don’t know if it was because RDA was not in it as much but for me he made the show for me and the chemical relationship between the characters wasn’t just the same. Stargate will always be my favourite show of all time and I miss it greatly. The potential of the show just got shot down towards the end, Mainly forgetting about what Stargate was about, Exploring new worlds and meeting new life… Read more »
Vala as a main character is a welcome surprise, one of the few pluses of this season
I just started watching this today. Been going through the entire Stargate Francise again. Loving it. Movie to SG-1 to Atlantis to 2 movies to Universe.
It’s been quite a few years, but I do remember giving up on SG1 at around this time. I did not like sex-kitten Vala (and I adore Claudia Black) or the fact that they never brought back Jonas. Also hated Action Jackson, I liked nerdy Daniel from the earliest seasons. I think these things and the change of tone of the show (new showrunners?) really killed it for me. I don’t have the DVDs but maybe someday I will catch up online.
@Sylvia:
Amen to everything you just said.
I had the exact same feelings around that time– “sex kitten Vala” just about summed up my own opinions on that subject as well. The way the writers treated the character of Jonas was an unforgivable crime in my book (and don’t even get me started on his omission from “Seizure” on SGU..!)
“Action Jackson”… I love that!

“[I] had and still have a theory that if there was a season 11 or 12 we would have seen jesus as a ancient.”
You weren’t the only one. A few years back on this site, I joked that Season Nine was turning into “Stargate: Golden Compass”, because I was half-expecting the showrunners to turn what was then called ‘Origin’ in another galaxy into ‘The Church’ here in our Milky Way…
That was *too* close…
I liked the last couple of seasons. Ben Browder brought a new energy and enthusiasm to the show. By then, RDA seemed bored with the whole thing, and it showed. While I missed the great Don Davis, Beau Bridges did just fine and created his own identity. Vala was a little over the top, but added a little needed spice to the ensemble. I only wish the show had remained a little more episodic, with a bit less of the Ori.
We got another season after RDA left and it was high quality sci-fi programming. Something we don’t see anymore …but I won’t go off on a tangent right now.
To the point;
RDA = Great, but
BB = Also great
DD = Great, but
BBridges = Also great
That is all.
That is all.
The last line was a typo.
That is all
@grif: I disagree. For me, Season 8 was clearly the weakest, with its meandering plot, several uninteresting episodes, and way too many Earth-based episodes (O’Neill was heading the SGC, so I guess that was why). Season 9 was a much-needed revitalization for the show. In fact, that season was one of my favorites for the entire series. After Season 8, I almost felt like giving up on the show. Season 9 made me realize that “SG-1” was still worth watching. Season 10 was a little worse than Season 9, but it was still better than Season 8. But then again,… Read more »
I couldnt have said it better worgel. U just dont see quality storytelling like this anymore. Ive seen every episode countless times and it never gets old.
For me season 8 was also the worst and I agree,RDA WAS soo obviously bored with the whole thing by that point,which is not just us guessing..it is a known fact.But even season 8,I loved and was better than most things on tv nowdays. Anyway,this 9th season that came after it for me felt a bit weird in the beginning,but I warmed up to it fairly quickly,especially cause it felt so refreshing after 8,with a whole new injection of energy and dynamic.It became one of my favorites of the whole series.But have to admit,I too never warmed up to Vala… Read more »
I loved season 9 and 10. Vala was an excellent addition to the show. Really liked the Ori storyline. An enemy more powerful and a bigger threat than the Goa’uld were. But it only took 2 season to defeat them which was a huge disappointment. The Ori storyline should have had a whole new show all together to tell the story. THAT should of become the third spin off show and NOT SGU. SGU was just horrible!!
it would have been a three season story line for the ori if there was a season 11. ark of truth was said to be a whole season crammed into one movie. vala is a complete waste of time and space until she shows up again at the end of the season and during season 10.
