FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY:
Claudia Black fools around during the filming of Season Ten’s “Bad Guys.” After four years as the very serious Aeryn Sun on Farscape, Vala Mal Doran gave Claudia a chance to play a funny and unpredictable character.
Claudia was first cast for a one-off guest appearance in the eighth season episode “Prometheus Unbound.” The producers like her (and her chemistry with Michael Shanks) so much that they brought her back for a six-episode arc in Season Nine, temporarily replacing Amanda Tapping during her maternity leave. In Season Ten, Claudia was made a series regular.
The first episode that I ever watched was “Avalon, Part 1.” I tuned in originally because I was a longtime fan of Farscape and couldn’t resist seeing Claudia Black and Ben Browder again. However, the show soon drew me in based on its own merits, exemplified by its unique combination of mythology, legend, and good old-fashioned storytelling.
I got addicted to the show in its final season. I loved how they integrated Vala’s character into the already established team dynamic. It had been awhile since I’d seen a show with such a feeling of camaraderie among its core cast. Even when the show missteps (which is very rarely), it’s still miles better than most shows on television today.
