Beware of minor SPOILERS for the premiere of Stargate Universe in the report below.
Following September’s announcement of the main characters for Stargate Universe (story), our friends over at SpoilerTV have just posted two brand new character breakdowns for the pilot episode: Senator Walker and Camille Wray, a representative of the International Oversight Advisory. Here’s how casting calls are describing these characters:
SENATOR WALKER
Male. 50s. 60s. Distinguished Senator who is the political oversight to this Stargate project trying to dial the ninth chevron. Also the proud loving father of Chloe Walker, his daughter and political aid. GUEST STAR, 2 EPISODE ARC. PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES. STAR NAMES ONLY.
CAMILLE WRAY
30-50. An accountant with the international oversight body that governs the Stargate program. Now the highest ranking member of that body left stranded on the ship, she has a false sense of importance and superiority to the other military and civilian population along with a stubborn way of asserting it. GUEST STAR, POSSIBLY RECURRING, PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES.
Senator Walker is the father of Chloe Walker (formerly Carpenter), one of the show’s main characters. Based on what we know so far, it looks like she accompanies him in an official capacity as he inspects an off-world base run by Earth. After the base is attacked, they and everyone else must evacuate through the Stargate to the Ancient ship Destiny.
Authority on board the Destiny becomes an immediate issue, as military commander Colonel Everett Young and project head Dr. David Rush (Robert Carlyle) clash over who should be calling the shots. Based on the info above it looks like the I.O.A.’s Camille Wray will be making sure her opinion is heard, as well.
Check out the original report at SpoilerTV, and keep up-to-date on the new Stargate spin-off in GateWorld’s exclusive Stargate Universe Launch Center! The show will premiere this summer on the SCI FI Channel in the United States.
Two very interesting characters! Look forward to seeing them…!
…Heck! I’m just looking forward to seeing everything about “Stargate: Universe”! It’s shaping up very nicely!
So much for everyone in SGU being 25 or under. Take that, unreasonable whiners!
wow all these characters with their own agendas will make this show v interesting
A few questions about Universe, hopefully someone can answer them.
Unlike Voyager or Lost in Space, which had to travel throughout the universe to reach Earth, can’t the people that are “trapped” on the Destiny just use a Stargate to return home to the SGC? The information released so far says that they are forced to abandon an off-world base, not the one on Earth.
What stops them from just dialing back home? Is it a lack of power like it was with Atlantis on the first season?
This two sound like very promising characters. Every piece of news about Universe is adding to my excitement about it.
:-) Thats all I got to say!
Michael I think that the main problem is that they are on a ship that keeps jumping around the galaxy and as you know you can’t dial a stargate unless you are near a planet and know your point of origin. Also probably dosen’t have much power left after floating around all that time.
atlantis15: Except, that’s not quite right either. In Enemy at the Gate, Atlantis was able quite quickly to recalibrate it’s DHD to function basically “in the middle of nowhere” and thus regain contact with Earth.
From the sound of these 2 characters, the show is suddenly getting a whole lot more interesting.
This is starting to sound like Battlestar Galactice now with the character of Camille Wray in place of Baltar *rolls eyes* This show is still not gaining my interest even with Robert Carlyle in it :-(
I’m curious to see who the recurring enemy on the show will be.
Will they be connected to the ones that initially attack the base, or someone else altogether?
It might make sense to connect them, but it be weird for the same enemy to be in both locations, unless they are able to move between galaxies much faster than the SG team will be on the Destiny.
It would be cool if the enemies possessed the technology that the SG team needs to return home.
Michael, I’m sure figuring out how to use the 9th chevron probably has something to do with getting home.
So far I’m a bit unsure about this new series. BSG wasn’t my cup of tea and while this will surely be different, I’m really not looking for another BSG to not watch. Also, it seems like the characters I’ve seen so far are all cliche and have been done before, though not by Stargate.
The 9th chevron is to travel to the ship, correct? I think it’s a safe guess that the team will be able to travel from the ship to a planet (i.e. regular seven-chevron address) and from the planet to the ship (i.e. new nine-chevron address). The problem, best as I can figure, has more to do with intergalactic travel (i.e. an eight chevron address) than travel from the ship to Earth (nine chevron address). The nine chevron addess, being the address to the ship, has to be a regular feature of the show, otherwise how would they be able to… Read more »
Those characters sound great! Seriously, this show is looking better and better. I was a bit depressed in the beginning but what with some older characters, some interesting plot lines, and what the Malozzi said about these just being *sci-fi’s* comments . . . Well I am certainly more than optimistic.
Oh, and comparing it to BSG now is ridiculous. Please. Just try not comparing it to something, if it’s suddenly seeming less like Star Trek that doesn’t mean you have to now say it’s a rip-off on something else. Stargate is Stargate, let it be so.
Another star name casting? They must be just throwing money at this premiere. Maybe if it’s set more on the ship, they won’t have to spend so much on new sets and location shooting, and will have more set aside for cast and production values on the standing sets. Fingers crossed, anyway.
I’m imagining someone like a Bruce Davison (X-Men, Knight Rider) for Senator Walker. He’s ubiquitous, and he’d be great to see on Stargate.
I was just chastising myself yesterday for writing a series premiere script with a lady accountant on a spaceship. Oh well, it inspired me to write some killer action to make up for it so she can stay for now. I just had to get that out there in case someone accuses me of ripping off the lady accountant on a spaceship stereotype. As long as SGU stays away from the theme of the threat of war between people who abuse credit and bounty hunters working for deflation hedge funds, we shouldn’t have a problem.
I found some articles from Gateworld that may help. Part of the article from Gateworld “Stargate Universe Revealed” 04/05/2008 Millions of years ago (before their conflict with the Wraith and possibly even before they moved Atlantis to the Pegasus Galaxy), the show would reveal, the Ancients sent out two ships: an automated vessel to place Stargates throughout multiple galaxies in our universe, and a second ship to follow up and explore. A standard, 7-symbol gate address allows for travel within the same galaxy. Use of the Stargate’s eighth chevron allows for travel to a different galaxy. And the ninth chevron… Read more »
Part of the article from Gateworld “Stargate universe has a go” 08/22/2008 After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate’s ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed. What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny. The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe,… Read more »
I’ll be honest, I kind of had the impression when they first announced the cast of characters that it would only be those 5 members on the ship but now it looks like it could be a dozen or so?
Personally, I love BSG. I loved Star Trek as a kid but to be honest, I wasn’t too bright back then. The thought that the same 4-5 people would ALWAYS be the ones to save the day even though there is a crew of 100s really grinds my gears. BSG might not be everyone’s cup of tea – a few episodes we could do without – but the fact that they have more then just one face that always has a solution sparks interest in me. And the writing – oh my god. You actually feel like an intelligent human… Read more »
Camille Wray. Elizabeth Weir. Same personalities.
Seriously, is it _that_ difficult to come up with original characters?
“So much for everyone in SGU being 25 or under. Take that, unreasonable whiners!”
Did you actually read it? It said:
“GUEST STAR, 2 EPISODE ARC/GUEST STAR, POSSIBLY RECURRING”
Guest star. One for two episodes. One POSSIBLY recurring. That doesn’t mean a main character, which is the whole issue people have with it (I’m not sure what my views are yet).
Sorry I still think SGU is awlful AND HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE and I know that non US fans mean actually “Jack” to the makers.
But if US fans boycott this show then at least it shows the depth of feeling that the fans feel at the way they have been treated.
BRING BACK STARGATE ATLANTIS
PLEASE PLEASE BOYCOTT SGU!!!!!!!!!!!!
