I agree, the preview only showed one article of interest to me: Young killing Telford. But since I know that these types of shows thrive on playground drama – Telford won’t be getting killed at all. I’d imagine that flare up is the last scene and it lasts ten seconds at most. The majority of the episode will focus on Lt. Scott’s ex-girlfriend being pregnant or some such nonsense – drama means baby-mama-drama according to modern tv tropes – and we will get a small introduction to Wray’s love life – not enough to realize she is a functional person… Read more »

Piernik: Indeed.

I don’t think that this episode will be better than ‘Time’, but it’s always nice to know some backstory of the characters. That’s something that SGA lacked in their first season.

Oh crap. I was actually getting into and now another episode with the stones. I actually enjoyed the character development in “Time”, but not the rest of the epis when it is way too in your face. I am so disappointed. Like was said on the podcast, I was hoping “Time” was the new rule, not the exception. :(

Someone please throw those damn stones into space. They are just plain stupid. Yep, the stones can communicate with Earth over billions and billion of light years but nothing else can. No wonder “Sponge Bob” has better ratings.

Scott Watson

well considering SGU has higher ratings than SGA’s 4th & 5th season you more or less just said that SGA was completely crap.

Scott Watson

btw why is everyone only picking up on the communication stone part of the episode but completely ignoring the “On the Destiny, the crew explores new sections of the ship, which yields the discovery of a promising Ancient device.”

Imitation Tofu

Probably because the communication stone parts in the show so far have been boring and soapy. Dump the stones, make the show better.

SGU is better than probably sG-1 and SGA in many areas – but I’d sum it up to be simply better quality work. In SGA and SG-1 the camera work was always sloppy. They would have an image of atlantis from the outside, and then go straight into the set of the gateroom. You get tired of that for a few seasons. And the “action” in SG-1 and SGA had a lot to be desired as well. There were a few good battles, but most of them were not that great. If you’re watching Stargate just for the special effects… Read more »

@Blitzo I think the main harangue about the communication stones is that they have been retconned to body swap as opposed to projecting which does indeed create character development but leaves the story dangerously dependent on it FOR character revelation and story development. Also the infinite distance communication is hard to believe given the minimal power requirements of the device. In other words, the gripe about the stones is not about the window into characters lives so much as it is just as tired as shifting from Atlantis EXT to Gateroom INT was. Though I disagree about the sloppy camera… Read more »

Why did they bother with the whole “lost in space” routine if everyone can pop home whenever they like!!. I thought this show wasn’t going to have any quick fixs. I would call these stupid stones the biggest quick fix of the entire franchise. So more high school emotional drama and getting to see who Scott is sleeping with this week. This isn’t even recognizable as Stargate anymore.

So far I’ve loved every episode – it’s the first time since SG1 or LOSt that I’ve actually looked forward to see what might be next.

Tanith: don’t put words in my mouth. I was speaking of SGU only. And, I did not call any of the shows crap. I loved SG1 and 3 of the 5 seasons of SGA. SGU just isn’t StarGate. Its fine if you want to re-write the story but it helps to wait 20 years as they did with BSG. I will continue to watch all this year before I make up my mind. But, you have to admit the stones are an easy out when they lack good stories and appealing actors. I am a real fan not a yes… Read more »

Sorry to say Tanith, this is one time I’m going to agree with the haters. Doing character back stories and doing human interest is one thing but it is getting ridiculous. We’re nearly half way through the series and they’ve spent more time talking about their feelings and crying back to Earth than they have exploring the ship or going through Star Gates. I agree, someone needs to toss those damned stone into space and lets get on with human development aboard the ship and do some real exploring. I love this show but its supposed to be “StarGate” and… Read more »

When all of the babies start arriving, they probably have a plot twist planned. Maybe they will have one or more alien spirit entities possess one or more of the babies. Sooo, we will have newborn babies floating around the air with strange looking eyes (say a constant red glow) and holding the crew hostage. And to make the situation more dramatic, these entities will use the stones and connect with the new babies on Earth. Lots of potential here. This may be when the producers plan to have the people of Earth become aware of the Stargate program, after… Read more »

A total waste of what little money and little time was used to create this episode. Another flop. The first season is nearly half over and basically nothing has happened of any interest. SGU is not exploring the universe – they are too busy swapping bodies and exploring body parts. They should toss the stones out with the sewage. What little emotion is present is soooo obviously forced and fake. There is no interpersonal relationships of any meaning between any of the characters. The show is boring and lifeless.

I liked the episode, but there is one thing that I do not like so far about the show. Why do they have so much freedom with other peoples bodies when they use the stones, and why would they be able to tell so many people the truth?

I have given this show a fair chance, but it is clear that SGU is inferior to the other Stargate shows. It is mostly about the sexcapades of the various characters; I changed the channel when the Lesbian sex scene came on. This is not a Sci-fi show at all, it is a boring sex show that belongs on the CW network.

Wow!! They managed to make me curious last week, but made me throw up this week. LIFE SUCKS!!, and this time, literally. First, the show starts with some singing (or wailing) that life sucked. actually that was the hilight of the show, because everything went south. it is now just a soap opera. I had a hard time trying to figure out who that asian looking chick (Not Wray) was boinking next. This show just became icky.. So yes Life.. SUCKED!!! My husband and I have certainly given this show “a chance”. We are very disappointed. I sure hope the writers, and producers read these blogs. This is NOT Stargate nor is it Sci-fi. It’s always GREAT to see RDA, Shanks, Amanda make guest appearances on this show, but they don’t belong here on SGU. It’s not Stargate. It’s just another one of those “desperate” shows engineered to capture the “lusty” viewers. This whole body swapping thing is getting more and more……”creepy” and just not right. But I do wish all you newbies to this show well and enjoy this while… Read more »

“I am finally.. DONE. !!!” Thank god for that. Anyway, I quite liked this episode was nice seeing what the daily every day life is like onboard the Destiny without having a major “were all going to die” problem to solve. I don’t know about some people but this got a little to repetitive in the previous series to the point where you always knew that some technobable was going to save the day in the nick of time (The Wormhole Drive took the biscuit in that regard). The communication stones have been used quite well for character development in… Read more »

On this particular episode I have to agree a little bit with the haters. I mean come on! Enough is enough. Character development is fine, but put it in disguise like it was done in “Time”, that was perfect. This was just character development in a regular drama show kind of way. I hope that they start doing more episodes like “Time”, meaning sci-fi stories with character development built in to it, not the other way around. Episodes 1-8 were good, with “Time” being GREAT. But the drama-centered episodes have to stop, they are starting to go overboard. It wasn’t… Read more »

Loved it. I don’t get while people say that the character development was “delicate” in Time… it was pretty blunt. It’s great when character development happens through the characters’ actions, and not them sitting and talking about themselves. Fortunately this episode is back to the subtle way of defining the characters – like in the previous episodes.

@Blitzo Please allow me to demonstrate why your comment is flawed in o so many ways. You talk about sloppy camera work on SG1 and SGA where they go from an outside shot of Atlantis and dive straight into the gateroom. In which way does SGU do it any different than this? You get to see Destiny from outside flying by and then hey presto, the view from inside the ship! You state the action in SG1 and SGA left a lot to be desired. I can only respond to that by saying that in those series there actually was… Read more »

Now after having spent considerable time replying on blitzo’s comment I would like to leave my opinion about this episode. The stones are absolutely ruining the show! Had they not been present, the writers would have been forced to do things like actually writing about things that interest Stargate viewers. Such as the people being trapped on a spaceship together for instance, or them going out on adventures to explore the far side of the universe, or just to save their own asses. I’ve heard people talk about that being too similar to Star Trek Voyager, well screw it. I’d… Read more »

It’s beyond me how people seem to watch the show just to bash it on the forums. It should be no surprise that this show IS in essence a “space-drama”. It’s still Stargate..it’s just not “your” stargate. From what I understand, the writers are some of the same writers that worked on SG1 and SGA so I don’t know where that slam came from, they’re just getting to explore another side of their craft. If you don’t like the show then don’t watch it..it’s that simple. I for one love SGU’s character development this season so we can get to… Read more »

Awesome episode. I’m really appreciating the “hand held video” type filming. And the playing of songs at the beginning and end were quality.
The character building was average, nothing too special – but getting Telford get beaten up out of no where was hilarious.

Right now I think they’re balancing the sci fi side and character side quite well. about 50/50. Next episode will probably be more of a sci fi -ish one.

It keeps surprising me that many people that leave positive comments on the show talk about character development. As if that’s why people watch scifi. There’s a reason why scifi is a subcategory in the whole tv/movie industry business and that’s because it’s something different from the mainstream stuff. In general people like watching scifi to sort of get away from ‘normal life’ for a little while. In this show the writers seem to want to incorporate all sorts of stuff that people are trying to ‘escape’ from into scifi. I say let scifi be scifi and don’t start tampering… Read more »

Lots of stargate fans bashed battlestar galactica for having too much sex. They said it was more soap opera than science fiction. It’s funny to see those same fans now praising universe even though it’s worse in those aspects than galactica. Stargate: Beer Goggles.
