Amazon.com is expanding its Stargate offerings for its streaming online video service, announcing a new deal with MGM this week to make several studio films and television series available.
The entirety of Stargate SG-1 (ten seasons), Stargate Atlantis (five seasons), and Stargate Universe (two seasons) are currently available from Amazon, as well as the movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum. These are free to watch for Amazon Prime subscribers (unlimited and commercial free), and downloadable on a per-episode basis for everyone else ($1.99 standard definition, $2.99 for HD).
While SGU has been available in HD for some time, the second season has not yet been released on Blu-ray disc. While Atlantis does have a complete series Blu-ray set, only scattered episodes from the five seasons are currently in HD on the Amazon service.
Stargate SG-1, on the other hand, has never been released in the HD format — making Amazon’s streaming video service a first. Seasons Eight, Nine, and Ten are currently available in high definition (though, like many online services, this is 720p and not up to the Blu-ray level of 1080 “true” HD).
Amazon Instant Video can be streamed to multiple devices, including Xbox 360, the PS3, compatible TiVo, DVD, and Blu-ray boxes, and the new Kindle Fire.
Take a look at the episode offerings, and support GateWorld with your new Amazon Prime subscription! This is also a great way to join us for the on-going Stargate Rewatch project, which is currently on Atlantis‘s first season (especially since we’ve recently been told that SGA is no longer available on Netflix).
UPDATE: Several commenters report that Atlantis is indeed still available on Netflix. Thanks!
(Thanks to Todd and Nathan for the tip!)
Awesome news, always great to have more ways for people to get into it. When is MGM releasing SGU season 2 on Blu Ray so I can finally buy it and complete my collection (at least until the next Stargate roles around)? Also, would be awesome to get a remastered SG-1 on Blu Ray ala Star Trek: TOS or Star Trek:TNG. If Paramount can take all seven seasons of TNG and remaster them in 1080p why can’t MGM take some time effort and money to do the same for the seven seasons of SG-1 that weren’t shot in HD? Ideally… Read more »
My Amazon Prime subscription just keeps giving me more and more value.
Yay! I’ve had Amazon Prime for a while now, good value and now even better. I only wish they had started this earlier and I could have done the SG1 rewatch with you.
Hmm. I was just watching SGA a couple of hours ago, and I’ve been watching different episodes of it over the past couple of weeks (I’ve been reading the first three books in the legacy series, and wanted to remember faces and events). I wonder if it’s a US/ Canada thing, or if it just hasn’t been taken off yet. That would suck because it’s one of the few things I watch on Netflix.
SGA isn’t on Netflix anymore?! *Turning on Blu-Ray player to go to Netflix* Its still there, I watched it on Friday when I was on vacation from work. But if it’s being removed, I was already planning on buying the Blu-Rays anyway, I need something to take to Stargate Con in Chicago for the Atlantis actors to sign, since I have something for Michael Shanks to sign (I’m trying to decide which one I want signed – my Blu-Ray cover of The Ark of Truth, or Blu-Ray cover of Continuum). But yes, as far as I can see, it’s still… Read more »
That’s great news! My annual Amazon Prime membership payment has been the best deal I’ve ever had. That’s the best news on their video since the original Star Trek was offered in HD remastered.
Where is Stargate Infinity?? I’ve yet to actually watch that, even though it doesn’t fin in continuity.
@Browncoat1984 @DancerChick1982: I think DancerChick1982 is right. I just checked on Netflix and SGA is still there. I was just watching it last week. According to InstantWatcher.com, SGA will be on Netflix till Aug 16, 2036.
Netflix has had SG-1 Seasons 8-10 in HD for a while now (I think they deployed them in HD two weeks after they were released as I remember), so Amazon is not the first to have those.
Part 2 of the first episode of SG1’s first season randomly isn’t available due to “licensing agreements” …?
