Stargate is getting a brand new tabletop roleplaying game.
Wyvern Gaming announced today that it will publish an RPG based on the hit series Stargate SG-1, under official license from MGM.
While the Stargate Roleplaying Game won’t be available to buy until the summer of 2020, Wyvern will preview the Stargate SG-1 RPG at Gen Con this summer. The tabletop gaming convention takes place August 1-4 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The company is aiming for Gen Con 2020 to begin sales.
With the announcement comes the launch of an official Web site for the game, at StargateTheRPG.com.
“We love the Stargate franchise, and we wanted to create a roleplaying game in which fans can become a member of the S.G.C.,” Wyvern Gaming CEO Brad Ellis said. “Just imagining progressing a character from level 1 to 20 while exploring the universe is a thrilling thought. We’re building on top of the D&D 5th edition Open Gaming License to make this an approachable game for roleplayers while adding the exploration and mechanics necessary for a modern science fiction setting.”
The game will let players explore the galaxy in the midst of the conflict with the Goa’uld System Lords. Players will create their own characters from a set of playable races and classes, and then acquire the skills, feats, equipment, and technologies to execute missions from Stargate Command and level up.
“Players may be asked to capture a point of interest, explore new worlds, retrieve important artifacts, rescue important VIPs, or assassinate/capture high-value targets,” according to the press release. “Stargate Missions will launch the Living Campaign that will allow the players’ characters to advance through the ranks of the S.G.C. Through an online system, players can track their character’s progression, earn unique items, and become a legend within the S.G.C.”
Philip Loyer is a designer on the project, with M. Wayne Miller and Graham Sisk listed as artists, according to RPG Geek.
Founded in 2015 by a trio of game designer friends, Wyvern has previously published Onami, Short Order Hero, and the card game Cthulu. They are currently working on crowd-funding Sojourn, a time-travel themed card game.
Development and roll-out on MGM’s end is being managed by Brandgenuity, a third-party licensing agency.
Stargate SG-1 ran from 1997 to 2007.
The new release is actually the second tabletop RPG for the show. Alderac Entertainment published a core rule book and four add-on volumes for the Stargate SG-1 Role-Playing Game back in 2003.

Hopefully they released a new update version of the RPG book.
I'm not a tabletop RP gamer so this doesn't interest me in the least.
In fact, I had no idea there was already an RPG available...
Was that ever succesful? Just to get a feel of how long we'll be seeing Wyvern actively doing something with the license (and let's hope they don't get the same treatment with regards to licensing as American Mythology).
A) What's with the green guy in the artwork?
B) Kickstarter launch?
Hey look, Leffe and Stella Artois are also represented by Brandgenuity... This amuses me. =D
Sidenote: found an interesting article about Brandgenuity and MGM --> https://www.licenseglobal.com/mgm-partners-agencies-new-licensing-strategy (article dates from January 14, 2008)
In particular this little bit:
"Brandgenuity. The New York-based agency, founded in 2003, will be managing all of MGM’s core entertainment properties including: Pink Panther; new “Pink Panther & Pals” animated series, which began production this month; two Stargate franchises—Atlantis and SG-1; “Storm Hawks” from Nerd Corps Entertainment; Robocop franchise; Legally Blonde franchise; the new Fame movie; and the new Death Wish movie."
So no Universe, no Origins, no 1994 Stargate (and no Infinity) -- since the first 2 weren't in existence in 2008 this is probably already rectified.
Is anyone else frightened by this team. That's a human, nox, unas, jaffa, and a tok'ra on the cover!
It’s not a nox. ?
Looks like a Nox to me...
Hint: Thats not a Nox.
D20 1-20 level? Unfortunate choice.
5E is a non-starter for me.
