This year’s Stargate panel at San Diego Comic-Con is going to be one for the history books.
Details on this year’s fifteenth anniversary celebration for Stargate Atlantis are finally here, including the guest list for the panel — plus a live table read of scenes from Stargate: Extinction, the unfilmed Stargate Atlantis movie.
Cast and crew from the show will be on hand in San Diego to share their memories from the series, which ran from 2004 to 2009 on SCI FI Channel in the United States.
Extinction story was written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, and would have seen the city return to the Pegasus Galaxy to continue the struggle against the Wraith.
“Over ten years after being written — and subsequently locked away, not for public consumption — Stargate: Extinction, the Atlantis movie script, finally gets its long overdue table read,” Mallozzi told GateWorld. “With members of the original Atlantis cast no less! Not the whole script, mind you, but select scenes that offer insight into what could have been. And I am thrilled to be finally sharing this script with Stargate fandom.”
Mallozzi has also recently revealed some selected pages from the movie script on his blog.
Here’s the plan for Stargate at Comic-Con in 2019:
THE PANEL
First up: Stargate fans assemble for the official panel on Thursday, July 18 (1 to 2 p.m., Room 7AB).
Stargate Atlantis‘s doctors — Paul McGillion (“Carson Beckett”) and Jewel Staite (“Jennifer Keller”) — will be joined on stage by executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, plus Stargate SG-1 fan favorite Gary Jones (“Walter Harriman”). (This list may not be final, so stay tuned for updates.)
The group will share memories from their time on the Atlantis set, along with some behind-the-scenes and VFX photos.
Emceeing the panel is blogger and self-described nerd Yael Tygiel.
The panel will also feature a table reading of a short scene from the Extinction script. Mallozzi will have a chance to talk about the movie’s story as well as the backstory of the film’s production, which was iced in 2010.
And if you are in San Diego, stick around — because there is more.
THE FLUXX CLUB
The fun continues on Thursday evening with an extended anniversary celebration at Fluxx Club in the Gaslamp quarter (500 Fourth Avenue), from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All the panelists will be there to mingle with fans, along with actor Christopher Heyerdahl (Halling, “Todd” the Wraith) … plus another surprise guest.
Fans will enjoy more Atlantis memories and pictures from the guests at this live stage event, as well as an extended table read from Stargate: Extinction! The group will share multiple scenes from the film script at the event.
Stargate Command is taking RSVPs for the event starting today. But space is limited to 350 people — so be sure to reserve your spot now!
Can’t be at Comic-Con this year? Us neither. But there is good news for you, too: Stargate Command tells GateWorld that, while this event is not the precursor to the movie going into production, fans everywhere will be able to see the table read. Both events will be recorded and made available to the public.
Stay tuned for updates on how you can see the entire Atlantis anniversary celebration from Comic-Con.
Joe Mallozzi just confirmed to me that there will be video.
And by “public” they actually mean “all-access” probably… or “registered users only” …either way… public is basically a relative term Stargate Command uses to put their stuff behind a wall which can either only be walked through virtually by being in the right countries or signing up for a useless account (which you are still unable to delete by yourself). It better be on frellin’ youtube instead of that pointless app. I’m not watching it if it’s only going to be hosted there. I’ve been avoiding that hell hole like the plague and I have no intention of breaking my… Read more »
I’d imagine at least the panel video will just go up on SG Command’s YouTube channel. I don’t recall them ever limiting such things to All Access Pass holders. They live-streamed the Gatecon panels for free to the general public. Chris’s Wondercon panel from last year is currently up on the channel.
If it’s on the youtube channel, it’s all good… well, it’s at least not hidden behind a registration/pay wall.
But seeing is believing these days.
Glad about Scott’s comment below. There will be vids! Would be cool to be there.
@Darren, please do something with the cookie settings! I don’t want to be logged out every week or so. It is very frustrating.
Looks like this is a WordPress default. I’ve attempted to change the cookie duration to 3 months, but it might not take until the next time you log in. Let me know (webmaster@GateWorld Staff.net) if it doesn’t work for you!
Thanks!
Sorry, but this is really pathetic. Talking about a movie that could have been, but will not be made, what’s the point of that?
At least, this way it sorta sees the light of day.
So don’t read it, killjoy. What’s “really pathetic” is having a problem with other people enjoying things you don’t. Grow up.
Too bad we’ll never see another Stargate series. By cancelling Atlantis MGM basically said Stargate wasn’t good enough, unless it was serious like BSG.
You have NO idea if there will ever be another Stargate series. Saying there will never be one is remarkably shortsighted and shows a major lack of knowledge of how the TV industry works.
Surely some studio would love to move this hugely loyal franchise forward ?
Just rewatched torment of tantalus and I am more endnotes of sg1 than ever. Miss my buds
