Fans of David Arnold’s original Stargate film score are in for a treat this holiday season.
As we reported back in June, La-La Land Records will release a newly remastered and expanded edition of the Stargate movie soundtrack. It’s now officially set to begin shipping on December 10 release, with a limited edition (of just 3,000 units) marking the film’s 25th anniversary in 2019.
While it’s not the first re-release of the 1994 soundtrack, it certainly is the most comprehensive to date. The set includes 109 minutes of music over two discs, including 42 tracks that span the story of the film plus another 14 additional tracks. Highlights of the bonus content include alternate takes on “Ra – The Sun God,” plus an alternate version of the end credits.
The special collector’s set also includes in-depth liner notes written by Tim Greiving, with art design by Dan Goldwasser. Fans can pick it up for $29.98.
Milan Records’s original 1994 edition of the soundtrack clocked in at 63 minutes in total, with 30 tracks. In 2006 Varese Sarabande published the Deluxe Edition, which expanded the running time to about 72 minutes (with 37 tracks).
Stargate was an early entry in Arnold’s composing career. He went on to compose 1996’s Independence Day (from Stargate‘s Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin) plus five James Bond films, Zoolander, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the BBC’s Sherlock, Amazon’s fantasy series Good Omens, and recently the TV mini-series Dracula.
Arnold collaborated with Neil S. Bulk to produce the new 25th Anniversary Expanded Edition. Remastering was done by Doug Schwartz.
“I’m happy that Stargate became so popular and created a lot of TV shows that were part of that world,” Arnold told Film Music Magazine earlier this year. “It only really struck me when I heard other people sort of doing versions of what I’d done for the TV shows that I realized that the world of Stargate had a ‘sound.’ Something that I’d come up with was now a thing that was travelling around to be adopted and recognized.”
