One of the creators of Stargate’s expansive television universe is headed back to science fiction with a brand new series.
Robert C. Cooper will serve as executive producer and showrunner for Generation Mars, a live-action drama that adapts the ongoing series of novels by author Douglas D. Meredith. This comes according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Generation Mars is set in 2053, when humans have begun colonizing Mars. It follows 12-year-old Cas, who is famous in two worlds as the first human born on Mars.
The show is in development for a 10-episode first season from indie producers marblemedia and MEZO Entertainment.
The first Generation Mars novel was published in 2019, styling itself as “hard science fiction scaled for kids.” Each of the books uses a precious resource as a jumping-off point for its story (not unlike the first season of SGU): air, shelter, water, and food. The books follow Cas and Ori, two sisters.
So far there is no indication that the Generation Mars television series would be aimed at the same youth demographic.
Cooper began his illustrious Stargate career as a writer and script supervisor during the first season of Stargate SG-1, and rose through the ranks to become a producer and then an executive producer. He is responsible for much of the show’s lore surrounding the Ancients and ascension. Eventually he took the reigns of SG-1 for its final two seasons, creating the Ori storyline.
Cooper co-created spin-offs Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe (with Brad Wright), and directed fan-favorite episodes such as “Sateda,” “Vegas,” and “Time.” When SG-1 concluded its 10-year run, he wrote and directed the DVD movie Stargate: The Ark of Truth.
Since his time on Stargate, Cooper has written and produced Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency for BBC America (2016-2017), and created the dramatic miniseries Unspeakable for CBC and SundanceTV (2019).
There is currently no broadcaster attached to Generation Mars, so we’ll keep our ears to the ground for more intel as the new series moves toward production.
