Stargate’s audio dramas from Big Finish Productions are finally coming back, after more than seven years out of print.
Big Finish published a total of 18 original stories for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis between 2008 and 2012. These are full audio productions with score and sound effects, and starred original cast members like Michael Shanks (“Daniel Jackson”), Christopher Judge (“Teal’c”), Claudia Black (“Vala Mal Doran”), Torri Higginson (“Elizabeth Weir”), David Nykl (“Radek Zelenka”), Teryl Rothery (“Janet Fraiser”), and others.
The news was revealed near the end of the July 17 episode of The Big Finish Podcast. (Listen around the 59:45 mark.)
“Next week … we trumpet the return of Stargate to Big Finish, with shiny new rerelease collections of the adventures you may have missed some time ago,” hosts Nicholas Briggs and Benji Clifford said. Stargate will be featured in next week’s installment of the podcast, due out July 24.
At that time dramas were available on both CD and digital download. But the company was no longer able to sell new copies after its license lapsed in 2015. As a result, physical copies of the dramas have skyrocketed in price on the secondary market — putting them out of reach for most casual listeners.
Founded in 1996, Big Finish is best known for original audio dramas that expand the 60-year-old universe of Doctor Who — featuring side-characters and fan-favorite companions, and bringing back leading actors from both the classic and modern eras to tell new stories for their versions of the Doctor. Recent projects have starred Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor, and Tom Baker’s beloved Fourth Doctor.
The audio dramas have also given a new lease on life to Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor, who previously appeared in the 1996 Doctor Who: The Movie (and returned for a fantastic Web short during the show’s fiftieth anniversary celebration).
Imagine that kind of platform to revisit the Stargate universe, its characters (and the original actors who brought them to life), and its unresolved storylines!
So far Big Finish is mum on whether the rerelease of past stories is a harbinger of new original Stargate audio dramas to come. But with the license from MGM renewed, that would seem to be a real possibility … if sales merit another trip through the gate.
Big Finish has helped to tell the ongoing adventures for a number of science fiction favorites that are no longer producing live-action TV episodes, from classic-era Doctor Who and Torchwood to Space: 1999, The Prisoner, Blake’s 7, and more.
