Stargate Universe really excelled in its cast, not only the main characters but the many outstanding supporting players like Drs. Adam Brody, Dale Volker, and Lisa Park – the scientists who helped keep Destiny humming.
Park was portrayed by Toronto-born actress Jennifer Spence. After Stargate she went on to other sci-fi productions like Continuum, Travelers, and Supernatural. “Dial the Gate” sat down with her to talk about her work on SGU, her character, and how Dr. Park found herself in peril on more than one occasion.
That included the series’ penultimate episode, “Blockade,” which left Lisa blind after Destiny‘s close encounter with a star.
The show’s writers “were always raising the bar, [and] not being afraid to go there, which I really admired,” Spence said. “I thought it was a great choice. We want to see what happens when someone is challenged in a new way — to keep thriving and contributing. So I thought it was a great opportunity that they did that.”

Spence also talks about an important scene in “Malice” – when a Lucian Alliance terrorist leaves her on a desert world with a bomb strapped to her back. The crew filmed the alien vista in the Bisti Badlands in New Mexico, with Spence’s scene culminating in a powerful moment where Dr. Park is resigned to her fate.
“That moment … I was really helped by Rob Cooper, who was directing the episode,” she said. “… He [came] over in between takes and he said, ‘This is the moment where, if you’re going to go there, go there. This is the last moment that you can have these feelings.’ And so once he said that it opened me up more, and I was able to understand it more. So that was a really helpful direction.”
