U.S. government research agency based in Washington, D.C., in an alternate timeline. Scientists at the Department studied matters of aerospace technology as it pertains to government programs, from practical matters like solid rocket fuel ships to theoretical matters such as antigravity.

After SG-1 traveled back in time to ancient Egypt and inadvertently changed history, Dr. Samantha Carter worked at the Department's D.C. headquarters and had never enlisted in the Air Force.

Her colleague and evidently immediate supervisor was Dr. Hirschfield, who treated her as a subordinate and more than once took credit for her brilliant work.
