Previously on the GateWorld Podcast: All the way back in December we talked about Fan Entitlement, what we think the writers and producers of shows like Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and Universe owe the loyal viewers who tune in every week, who buy DVDs, and who participate in the online fan community. In this week’s show we are reversing that question: What do we as fans owe to the show(s) that we love so much?
Should you watch new episodes live rather than on Tivo, or online? Should you spend your money on a DVD, even if you didn’t care for that season or movie all that much? Should you watch the newest spin-off show? David and Tame weigh in on all this and more.
But first up, we’ll recap all of the latest Stargate news, and tell you what’s new on the Web site.

What Do Fans Owe the Show?
Nothing at all, we paid to support it all these years, we owe it absolutely nothing, we can stop watching when we want.
What does the show owe fans?
Now that’s a completely different question.
Cannot download the mp3 file for this podcast. There is something wrong with the link – pls fix since I need my podcast fix! (Last week’s podcast mp3 works just fine)
All fans owe is the cost of the episodes rental fee, the seasons dvd cost and any other costs required to view the footage and thats it. When writers and cast start to get in their head that they are entitled or dont have to work as hard because the fans “owe them” the show starts to go down hill.
I think fans should buy what they like and not feel obligated to buy something just because it has Stargate in the title. I own all of SG-1 and a few seasons of Atlantis because I liked those seasons. I didn’t buy the last couple of seasons of Atlantis because I didn’t like it. I don’t own the cartoon series because it doesn’t interest me. I don’t feel obligated to watch Universe because it doesn’t interest me.
I didn’t think it mattered if you watched the show live or not if you aren’t selected as a ratings household. Right?
For my favorite ep, id have to say its between ‘The Pegasus Project’ and ‘Unending’ its hard because the both have excellent storys as well as great cgi shots. The Series finale was by far one of the best in SG-1 history clear back so season 1. An idea for a discussion topic… the music of SG-1 and Atlantis? How are the two simular and how are they different? And what about the movies? Anyhow thanks and goodbye.
I think the only thing fans owe the franchise is the benefit of the doubt. But that hardly counts, because until proven otherwise, we ALL deserve the benefit of the doubt.
No one should feel obligated to support a franchise by purchasing material they do not like/enjoy.
they owe the franchise a cup of ‘shut up and just accept that filler episodes are a fact of life, and that they cannot cater to their every fanfiction fantasy.’
I watch what I like and I don’t feel that fans should have to watch or buy something they don’t. I own season 1-5 & 10 of SG1 and all of SGA because they where my favorites but I won’t be watching or buying SGU because it doesn’t interest me at all.
Hey David and Tame,
It is so much fun and a little strange listening to your podcast. I feel like I’m spying on your conversation. Two things: I watch live and Tame. what do you have against Season 7?!
Another comment. Friends and I promote “Stargate Universe” and “Defying Gravity” so much on Twitter that I wish I could track the effect.
Still cannot download the mp3 file. Luckily I took your advise and went to a podcast catcher site and there it worked… I agree with most comments here – fans don’t owe the show anything more than paying for the episodes they want to buy :D and watch what they want. Though I must admit that I’d have a hard time myself saying I won’t watch SGU because it doesn’t interest me. Any scifi interest me :D
I think its quite ridiculous to even think that fans owe the creators of a show, “any show” whatever the genre any thing. They choose to be in that profession nobody twisted there arms an its not like they don’t get paid for DOING THERE JOB! Its a job, if the material provided attracts people then they did there job well, if it doesn’t well they need to rethink what they did, not have any notion that fans should just blindly support an buy DVDs ect… because a fan owes them something for them doing there job! We pay for… Read more »
Time after time, great Science Fiction Shows gets cancelled, just after people get’s hooked in. I’m sure there’s Many great reasons why the shows got cancelled. BUT.. when the producers and directors say ” We want to leave on a high note, and It’s much better for us to do Feature Length releases instead of weekly’s”. “Also, we are looking for a new demographic, since the old ones (no pun intended) simply does not cut it”. I can’t believe you can ask the question keeping a straight face “What Do Fans Owe the Show?”. My personal favorite would be, a… Read more »
So according to Junebug, crappy writing and then worthless “reminiscent’ episodes are to be expected, and we should be thankfull that we got a dose of De-javu, because we don’t remember tose episodes?
What??? what we the fans owe to them, “yeah right”
Sweet F A thats what, I pay my hard earn ££s when I buy DVDs or pay for Virgin 1, thats enough, cant believe someone would even “think” to ask that question!!!!! It could only happend in a America!! he he
US06154- So true, my view exactly.
Fans owe that bunch of showers NOTHING, look what they did to SGA an then axed for rubbish like (B) SGU. I know what I’d like to say to the “gentleman” in person an it wouldnt be pretty. Who the hell do creators of a TV show think that fans in general owe “them”!, got paid didnt they, so we’ve quits!!!!!!!
Fans owe them nothing. They do a job and get paid for it. They don’t give any consideration to the fans, all they care about is getting an audience and they don’t really care where it comes from.
The only thing a fan of the Stargate franchise owes is their time and attention when a new episode is aired. I think this is the least the executives expect out of Stargate fans.
A person has to feel satisfied with what they received in order to feel that they owe something. So people that feel they owe nothing obviously are not satisfied with what they received with Stargate SG1 and SGA. So how can they call them selves fans. If you truly love a show how can you not at least owe them your attention.
The Question is not “What do Fans owe MGM or SyFy?” It’s what do Fans owe the SHOW?” If you love the show how can you give a negative comment. Of course we don’t owe MGM and SyFy anything. I don’t watch Stargate SG1 or SGA because I love MGM or SyFy. I watch it for the characters and adventures that entertain me week after week. So as long as I am being entertained I will freely give them my full attention.
Fans are not obligated to owe the show, the franchise, or the actors anything, but of course they can choose to buy the dvds, promote the show, watch the show live or not (because this doesn’t mater anyway unless you are a Nielson person), criticize what they don’t like, etc. etc. if they so feel inclined. I watch Stargate and have since practically the beginning, but not that it mattered because I’m not a Nielson family. The only Stargate thing I actually own is the dvd movie Continuum. I rented Ark of Truth. Don’t own a single dvd set of… Read more »
I don’t have cable. I have SG1 all seasons. But if Sg1 comes on TV in the middle of the night, I’ll watch it through commercials, because I’m a fan like that. But I do believe the best thing is word of mouth. I recruited a lot of people and because of me many people atleast know the show exist.
I am not in the catchment area to make a difference in the ratings as I live in the uk but I have been a fan of SG-1 from the first episode and have every single dvd and then I was loyal and checked out Atlantis. I loved this show and showed my loyalty by buying the dvds and magazines with the shows in them, I also have some of the books. When the show was on tv I watched it, so when SG-1 was cancelled I was heart-broken but survived, then they betrayed us Atlantis fans (yes I still… Read more »
I don’t think we owe them anything, but they would surely appreciate it if you “paid them back”
and if you “paid them back”the show would go longer.
Hi Emily, I think I’ve done enough ‘paying back’ as have others and they have not shown us the loyalty we have given them! Also why pay back for a new show that I have no interest in and yes they would so love it if we did pay them back lol! Your comment is valid but I only give my loyalty when it is reciprocated!
Fans dont owe the show anything.
The show doesnt owe the fans anything.
Anyone that thinks otherwise is a self-entitled jerk.
I must be a ‘self-entitled jerk’ lol! Remember they would not have had the jobs they’ve had for ten years plus or the success they gotten because fans have watched the shows and bought the dvds! Sure they have given us great tv shows but for me it is about give and take, I guess that makes me naive but I’m okay about that! Bye,this is my last comment on this cos I’m getting bored even whilst typing my own comment lol!
it was their *choice* to take those jobs, just as well its your *choice* to support their jobs. Doesnt mean either owes anyone anything. You said it yourself its give and take, nothing more. And yes, its ok to be naive, just as I am arrogant. As long as you have passion thats all that matters IMO.
Haven’t listened to the podcast yet but I do know one key thing we owe the show: DON’T BIT TORRENT. If you can’t watch the show live, then download it on iTunes or Amazon Unbox. Or watch it on Hulu. Whether we like the show or not, stealing is not the way to get your opinion heard. If you like the show, put up the bucks. If you don’t, then don’t watch the show. Syfy, MGM, and private investors are the ones who “pay” for the show. The way we “pay” is through watching on TV or watching via other… Read more »
Don’t forget that there are people/fans in the Delta quadrant/Pegasus galaxy that want to watch Stargate and since big entertainment companies keep insisting on having different zones in the world and not make the show easily available for *everyone* early fans will probably get hold of the show anyway they can. Believe me guys, there is a *HUGE* world outside itunes amazon hulo or whatever and we’d like access too. Thank God GateWorld is not into this zone thingy so that I can download interviews/podcasts and watch the Gateview…
Btw just ordered my final 3 SG1 dvd boxes. I’ll buy anything SG1 – I owe myself that, and fine if that’s benefiting the show too. I was really sad to see SG1 go, not as sad to see Atlantis go (even though I love Mckay). Not sure about SGU (*Universe* seem to be such a *big* name, to boldly go maybe :) but I WILL WATCH it, I mean Robert Carlyle is in it! And ok guys, I owe it to the show :D
Is it so necessary for some of these comments to be so hateful?
And people judging a show they haven’t even seen. My word. I almost feel ashamed to be a part of the same species.
Dear theStorWeaver,
isn’t your comment a tinzy tiny hateful too?
Whether people don’t or do want to see a show is totally up to them, however of course the language used could be nice.
Not hateful, depressed.
I was not going to comment again but I just want to say total respect to ‘daxmaryrussel’ cos you were right about not everyone getting access, also not everyone can afford to pay out any extras other than bills! I respect the way you said that it is up to others whether they watch a show or not and that you are going to watch it yourself, this is what I meant, not being judgemental and harsh because others do not agree with you, others should follow your example instead of taunting fans to be nasty. Again much respect to… Read more »
Thanks for your kind words ‘serenitypoi’.
And to Gateworld: I see the poll you have doesn’t include “unfortunately I don’t have the possibility to watch the premiere” … because I don’t live in an area where it is broadcasted [and it’s illegal to download and I don’t know how…]
