SGU / Atlantis crossover is a go!

Atlantis Cast Season 5 Stargate Universe has featured appearances from several members of the original cast of Stargate SG-1 during its first season.  But what about Stargate Atlantis?  That crossover that fans have been hoping for is officially happening!

Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi confirmed on his blog that two members of the Atlantis cast have been signed to appear in an episode of SGU‘s second season.  The crossover will happen in episode 15, “Seizure,” written by Remi Aubuchon (likely airing in early 2011).

Season Two’s thirteenth episode, “Alliances,” is currently filming.

Of course, bringing in faces from the city of Atlantis means that certain outstanding questions from the end of that series need to be answered — or at least hinted at.  Is the city still in San Francisco Bay (“Enemy At the Gate”)?  If its gate supercedes Stargate Command for incoming wormholes, has Earth relocated its Stargate program to the city?  And are Ronon and Teyla ever returning to the Pegasus Galaxy to continue the fight against the Wraith?

“There was a reluctance to move ahead with an SGA crossover, particularly on my part,” Mallozzi said, “because the feeling was it would step on the timing of the SGA movie, Stargate: Extinction, the events of which directly [followed] the Atlantis series finale, ‘Enemy At the Gate.’ But given the delay on the movie front and the idea premise pitched out by Remi Aubuchon and Brad Wright, it was decided to go ahead with the crossover.  Not a big deal, but it will require some changes to the Stargate: Extinction timeline which, in turn, will beg a host of questions, some of which will be answered in episode #15, some of which won’t … at least not right away.”

Mallozzi assured fans that having the characters put in an appearance on SGU won’t have a negative impact on the Atlantis movie.  (That script has been written and is awaiting a go-ahead from MGM.)  “The crossover episode will only have a minimal effect on Stargate: Extinction (the heart of the story remains unchanged), and no effect on Stargate: Revolution,” he said.

For Extinction, the SGU appearance “would only necessitate some minor re-jigging to the opening.”

Mallozzi still expects the film will be produced, eventually.

So … need we even ask? Which SGA cast members do you most want to see on Stargate Universe?

  • I thought the whole premise of SGU was to move on and cast aside “the square-jawed comic book heros”. And yet here they are back at it. A few minutes of screen time with the SGA people won’t bring anyone back in droves. IMHO they’d be best just forgetting about the whole thing and staying with the current situation they’re stuck with.

  • Shep and Rodney would I’m sure be the obvious ones people would want to see. Keller or Beckett’s skills could be needed for a ship without a proficient doctor. If these people might be beyond the opening credits cast I guess Zelenka would be a good possibility too.

Ronon, Teyla, or Woolsey it’s harder to imagine having an excuse to be involved.

  • I’m thinking that Sheppard is in for sure. The other person though could be anyone, but I’m thinking McKay is probably going to be the second. Its probably not Tayla or Ronan as they can easily be written in as being back in the Pegasus galaxy. Zelenka could also be a choice but he is more towards a minor character and there is also Keller and Woolsey that could fit as a second character.

Also speaking of SG-1 characters, we still have yet to see Teal’c and Mitchell.

  • I am incredibly excited to see this crossover episode! Great idea and glad to hear that because of this it won’t cancel out the production of the SGA movie!

Characters that I’d like to see appear…well I don’t like these two characters but looking at it logically, IOA Agent Richard Woolsey and Dr. Rodney McKay are the most obvious choices because of Camile Wray also being with the IOA and McKay’s understanding (if “understanding” is the word to use) of Ancient technology. I’d definitely like to see John Sheppard, Teyla Emmagan, Ronon Dex, & Jennifer Keller appear too but I don’t know what reason there is for them to be in it. I’m sure if they do appear, the episode storyline will make sense for their presence and it’ll be fantastic to see some or all of them (except maybe Woolsey and McKay) again.

  • Either McKay will come onto the ship and fix everything (which he should be able to do), or he will come on and won’t have a clue how to fix anything and Eli/Rush will provide the solution and one-up McKay. One of those two things will happen. I personally do not think that the SGA characters would fit in SGU at all. They are two completely different shows.

  • @Mentat – As Joe Mallozzi has pointed out a few times, an SGA crossover will have no impact on their renewal prospects, since the decision will be made long before this episode airs. I would imagine they’re bringing in the characters purely because they love them and know SGA fans who also watch SGU will enjoy it as well. I know I will!

  • Could the title of SEIZURE help us at all as to who may be in it, if it means seizure in medical terms then one of the candidates is Keller, whose medical mind may hold the key to something that could be contracted onboard Destiny and TJ is unable to help. Seizure could also mean something is taken, either by alien operatives on Earth or by the Destiny crew, who find a stash of stuff, maybe this could lead to McKay’s arrival, either in helping locate what has been taken on Earth or what the crew on Destiny have in their possession. Whatever the case, I can’t wait.

  • AHH!!! SO EXCITED!!! I really hope it’s Mckay!! For the second character though I would think either Beckett because there is a lot of injury’s that need a proper Dr.(I never found Keller to be a good chief of medical). Woolsey would be another candidate, because Camille is completely useless. Or even maybe a B cast character like Zelenka would be cool. But whoever it ends up being I am totally stoked!! I can’t wait for that episode!!

  • I’ve never seen SGU. I miss SGA so much though that it’s almost enough to make me check out the episodes where there’s the crossover. Hopefully it will be Mckay and Sheppard or maybe Dr. Beckett.

  • Seeing as TJ (that’s the medic right?) is pretty much wounded and down for the count, at least for now, I would expect to see Keller step in as temporary head surgeon. As for the other character, I think Mckay would be the best choice. Who else is as qualified as him (besides that handicapped lady whose name escapes me) to analyze the ancient tech? Those would be my two guesses for who is going to appear: Keller, and Mckay.

  • I’m still waiting for Teal’c to appear. After re-watching SG1 (on Season4 now), Teal’c has to be my favorite SG character.

  • I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Keller (maybe they need a doctor) and McKay (they need help with something).

    Or McKay & Zelenka.

While McKay is one of my favourite characters, I would rather that it would be Zelenka and some other secondary character as to not steal attention away from SGU.

Kind of like Critical Mass in SGA. They only showed General Landry and Agent Berret.

  • For the friendly confines of Destiny, I’m thinking Todd and Michael.

  • @alan, I have to agree, those two make the most sense. Woolsey always seems to be good at getting answers, and the IOA wants answers that Wray never seems to get, seeing how Young always shuts her out. McKay is obviously gonna fix the ship. I see McKay being on the verge of doing something incredible, then the communications stones suddenly cease functioning from then on and Eli and Rush spend many episodes trying to finish McKay’s work.

Now that I think about it, @Lindsey has a point with Zelenka. Maybe it will be McKay and his sidekick going to discover the ship’s secrets, with the same scenario happening with the stones.

  • One more thing I forgot to add, I really hope they give us some insights into just what they decided to do with Atlantis. Will they keep it in the MW and abandon Pegasus? If so, will they share their technology with the Travelers so they can continue the war? I gotta know!

  • @Mentat. They are moving on. This is a common thing in fiction, especially in franchises, to heighten the feeling of a living world or universe. No pun intended. A little cross over here and there is fine.

  • So who thinks they will do one with SG1, or at least have Mitchell in one?

  • It’s gonna be like when Teal’c grew his hair long and then decided to get it cut for Continuum

  • that’s one hell of WONDERFUL news!!!! Can’t wait :D :D
And it seems that SG1 and SGA movies still have a chance of happening…. Oh how I wish they would be given the green-light.

But I guess only time will tell :)

  • Okay, I’m going to be honest about the whole SGU series. I think that the idea is AMAZING but…They could’ve gone so many places with it, and unfortunately, they chose the dark side. The only thing that made me continue watching it is Eli. I think they’re trying to bring in an SGA character to expand their audience, so i hope Season 2 is a turning point for the series, Woolsy is definitely a good guess, and either Mckay will fix it or Zalenka will help them.

  • I think Keller and Woolsey – Keller as a stand-in for TJ, Woolsey as the go-to guy for Wray.

Still, I think I’ll just stick with Jo Graham & Co.’s book series “Stargate Atlantis: Legacy”, my hopes for the movie dwindled and died a long time ago.
