Blast From the Past. What does the crew of Destiny least expect to find on a planet in a distant galaxy never reached by even the Ancients? Human beings. What do they find in tonight’s new episode of Stargate Universe? Not just human beings, but a whole civilization of people who claim to be descended from Destiny‘s crew itself!
“Common Descent” premieres tonight when SGU moves up an hour to its new time — 9 p.m. (8 Central) on Syfy.

Here is your preview of “Common Descent:”
From TV Guide:
The crew finds a human settlement on a planet whose inhabitants claim to be descendants of the Destiny crew. Drones arrive and the ensuing battle leaves some crew members stranded.
From SPACE:
Destiny discovers the survivors of an interplanetary expedition who claim their civilization, Novus, was founded two thousand years earlier by Destiny‘s crew.
The franchise will be dead for a while, but what is the sense in depriving yourself of watching the last hours of stargate in a very long time? Unless you don’t like the show of course, then it’s understandable. But if you’re a regular viewer/fan and you think there is no point to watching the last eps because there is no continuation, then you’re simply sliding this lack of continuation a bit further back. If you stop watching right now your SGU experience will have no continuation after ep 16. If you simply watch everything, you SGu experience will have no continuation either, but you’ll have seen 4 more eps ( which seem to be kick-ass. I loved resurgence and deliverance, SGU’s space battles rule )
Seriously, ever since I heard what the premise of “common descent” would be, I can’t wait to see it! Descendants of the destiny’s crew founding a civilisation in a far off galaxy? I am a sucker for stuff like that, with civilisations and settlements in distant galaxies etc. It’s probably why I like warhammer 40K too, it just has more explosions.
I can’t wait! Here in Holland it will be available to me at 5:00 AM tuesday morning so I’ll just watch it tomorrow morning around 9.
@Noldor: Yes I am a Stargate fan, and I am a Star Trek fan. But to me, at this point… watching SGU’s last remaining episodes without any hope for a continuation, is like reading a book that has no ending, and to which the author is dead.
You get all excited and anxious to read/see how it all turns out, only to end on a “To be continued…”
I’m guessing in Twin Destinies when they dialed the gate back to earth, everyone who rush believed to be dead when they went through the gate, a solar flare sent them through back in time to the destiny 2,000 years ago.
Call me a Doctor Who wannabe, but Humans! Bloody Humans!!
I thought it was fantastic that in the sg universe, humans lived amongst at least 3 galaxies (milky way, pegasus, alteran home galaxy) Now out in the middle of nowhere, through a freak accident of time travel, another civilisation of them, possibly more advanced than the tau’ri. I wonder if they’ve met the blue aliens or the ursini. Blue aliens their goa’uld, ursini (with their self-sacrificial tendancies) their Asgard.
One thing I was curious about… surely there wasn’t enough genetic diversity on destiny.
I think this is one of best episodes of stargate ever. This show is so awesome, personally I think its better than SG-1 and SGA. Wonder if anyone is still alive down there. I’d love to see how Rush reacts when he finds out there is an entire nations devoted to him.
What a ridiculous comment the first poster in this list makes. First, because one series is cancelled hardly makes the franchise dead. Worse. because a series is cancelled, especially one with the promise of SGU, doesn’t make the remaining episodes worthless to watch nor does it even say that there won’t be some follow up to the series itself – even if that doesn’t look forthcoming in the immediate future. I’d hate to see how that person views other bumps in life.
Re SGU, I’ve been upset about other cancelled series in the past, but SGU is a special case. It often takes a series at least a year to get its footing, so to speak. SGU’s first season was good, and I can understand, esp now, how much was being set up for later. The series is so good this season, that it’s really painful that it’s been cancelled when every episode now is excellent – exciting and goes by in what seems like a few minutes. I guess Patience isn’t something either that the SYFY channel knows nor all those who didn’t give SGU the real look it deserves. Last nights episode was another first class great one on all levels, at least in my opinion.
It’s rather a shame the show ends in three episodes, the writing seems to have gotten a fair bit more relaxed. It was very refreshing to see the light humor that I remember SG-1 for.
I had to chuckle to myself in regards to the line about Rush being viewed as a demon by the decendants, I imagined a mother telling her little kids to eat their veggies at the dinner table otherwise “The Rush” will get them.
In regards to the franchise, I think its actually a good thing it is being put on the shelf for a few years. Eventually it’s going to be revived in a relaunch and hopefully by then some new blood will be writing the scripts.
Hasnt anyone noticed that this type of an episode has popped up far too often… Star Trek DS9 Defiant crew… then Enterprise their crew …. and now Destiny… the people have kids and meet their great X100 kids…. Oh Yip Yip…….
@lonix
Who cares? personally i’m not even a scifi fan except for stargate so I wouldnt know. Why care if they did stuff like this in other shows?? The story is good, thats all that matters
Great episode, I give it a 10/10! Only confused on how the gate got hit. In SG-1 the gate got hit with a meteore, nukelear explosion, blackhole, and several other stuff, but the gate was still intact. I’m just guessing because the gates that SGU uses is much older and aren’t sturdy and built the same than the gates from the previous series so thats why it was destroyed
These episodes keep getting more enjoyable…too bad it’s almost over. I am looking forward to seeing what happens after “Common Descent”… and whether others think this is a device used by other shows or not, if it works to keep the audience coming back to see what will happen next, then it doesn’t matter! Is there anyone left on Novis at all? Are they going to have to stay on the Destiny and what will they breathe if the air is toxic? How will it all get wrapped up in a few episodes? It’s not the novelty of the plot that makes great television or books, it’s the way it is done. Some would say there is only one story and it’s constantly being re-told, and that goes for literature, tv, film etc.
I heard the show was cancelled due to non profitability due to the rise in Canadian dollar relative to US dollar. In addition to that, to worsen the situation around the economic crisis, they had bad rating during the second half of the first season. I hope they announce a rebirth, but i doubt that since it is best to end as a good series. Anyway, if they do it good on the next episodes, we may see a couple of good tv/dvd movies in the next couple of years, that should be profitable for the studio. About genetic diversity, i think they had a fair racial diversity in the crew, including the few Lucian in the crew, that should allow interesting mutations to take place.
What’s the point in tuning in for any of the last episodes now? The show is dead, the franchise is dead.
Name one good reason to continue watching the show, knowing it will end on a cliffhanger, with no possibility for continuation?
darkthunder | April 18 @ 8:37 amIf you realy are a SG fan, you take what you get.
Noldor | April 18 @ 8:39 amBecause watching it entertains me.

darkthunder | April 18 @ 9:53 amI think that in your case you can watch common descent and epilogue, but just not watch the season finale ;)
I’m simply gonna watch it all, because I love the show. I wouldn’t wanna miss a minute of it, even if it ends with “to be continued”.
