Comment Rules

All comments are the sole responsibility of their authors, and do not represent the opinion of GateWorld LLC or its owner. Read at your own risk.

You must register a free account with GateWorld (separate from GateWorld Forum) in order to post comments on news items. The moderators of these comment threads will edit or delete comments and suspend or ban users that fail to follow the basic rules below.

Your use of GateWorld’s comment system is bound by our privacy policy, and by the following rules:

1) YOUR RIGHT TO POST IS AT GATEWORLD’S DISCRETION
We reserve the right to delete, edit, or moderate comments at any time and for any reason.

2) STANDARDS AND PROFANITY
Keep your posts “rated PG.” Profanity, sexual innuendo, and other such coarse talk will not be tolerated. Threats to others will result in immediate suspension.

3) TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT
You may not agree with another person’s opinions, but you must respect that they have as much right to hold them and to post them as you do. Negative personal remarks about real people – whether actors, writers, producers, or your fellow posters – are not welcome and will be deleted. Critique the show’s characters, not the actors.

You are welcome to criticize parts of the show you don’t like, but opinions must be stated in a tactful and constructive way, with respect for the people who make the show and for those who do enjoy that aspect of the show.  Posts that are crass or disrespectful will simply be deleted.  Repeated violations will result in your account being placed on moderation or suspended.

Although we maintain that even those who dislike an aspect of Stargate have the right to express their opinion, doing so without tact or courtesy toward others will not be tolerated. We are attempting to cultivate a community that is diverse yet respectful. If we feel we need to allow a voracious criticism to stand, we will. If we feel we need to delete a single cutting remark, we will.

4) STAY ON TOPIC
Comments should be directly related to the news item or editorial to which they are posted.  Discussions that go too far afield will be removed.  If you’d like to discuss another topic, head over to GateWorld Forum — where the sky’s the limit!

5) READ AND POST AT YOUR OWN RISK
This is a large site – a “city” rather than a small town – and so you are guaranteed to encounter people who aren’t very tactful in how they chose to express their differences of opinion. Do not rush to take offense at the opinions of others, or the way in which they express them. If you believe someone has broken the rules, report them to the site owner and ignore them.

6) YOUR ACCOUNT
Anonymous posting is not permitted, though of course you are not required to use your real name to post. Choose a username that is not offensive or otherwise in violation of these rules, and use it consistently. Usernames deemed to be insulting, profane, or attempting to impersonate real-life people will be immediately suspended. Multiple user accounts for the same person are not allowed, particularly when an account has been subject to moderation, and will be immediately suspended.

Please use an e-mail account where you can be reached; if you choose to sign up with a dummy account you never read, and the moderators are unable to communicate with you privately, don’t be surprised if your account is moderated or banned.

7) LINKS AND HTML
You may use basic HTML in your posts, including hyperlinks to related sites. Links to anything that violates the “rated PG” rule above, or evidence of posting malicious or disruptive code, is grounds for immediate suspension.

8) NO SPOILERS
Do not post plot details from episodes that have not yet aired in the United States, especially if you obtained the episode through an illegitimate leak. This is grounds for suspension. You may talk about what has happened in any aired episodes.

8) DON’T SPAM
This includes advertisements; posting the same comment more than once; “scrolling” or posting junk meant to disrupt the flow of conversation; or links to your Web site without participating constructively in the conversation. Spam is grounds for immediate suspension.

Remember, your right to post is at GateWorld’s discretion. We reserve the right to moderate or delete any comment or user at any time.

If you believe another user has violated these rules, you may e-mail webmaster @ gateworld.net to report it. Please include the exact URL address of the news story, the user’s name, and the full text of the offending post. Moderation will occur at the discretion of GateWorld.

In addition to these rules, all comments should be governed by this Community Vision:

GateWorld exists as a place for fans all over the world to enhance their enjoyment of the Stargate franchise by sharing it with others. Our vision for this forum is that it will be an open and welcoming place for the enjoyment of Stargate and science fiction, a place free of hostility where we communicate and build friendships, and a home that is open to challenging discussions. While we affirm everyone’s right to critique things they do not like, we ask that such comments be made with tact and respect for others. Our site may be large, but it is our home, and we want to focus our time talking about the things we enjoy about our favorite shows.

For more perspective on our site’s history and how this is applied, please read this editorial by the site founder. If you still have questions, you can e-mail us. Thank you, and enjoy the site!
