Daniel Jackson and Jack O’Neill are headed back to Stargate Universe later this season!
Actor Michael Shanks told TV Guide Magazine that he and former SG-1 co-star Richard Dean Anderson will appear in “Subversion,” the eighteenth episode of SGU‘s first season, which will serve as a lead-in to the two-part season finale.
He also offered the first hint at just what this story is about.
But before then, Shanks will guest star in “Human,” an episode that will explore Dr. Nicholas Rush’s (Robert Carlyle) backstory.
“I made a cameo in the pilot and they’re keeping me alive to pass the torch,” Shanks said. “The next one coming up is titled ‘Human,’ and back-references my character first initiating Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) into the Stargate program, but my character exists more as a figment of Dr. Rush’s imagination.
“And then in ‘Subversion,’ near the end of the season, we’ll see myself and Richard Dean Anderson helping out with an investigation where sabotage took place back on Earth.”
Both “Human” and “Subversion” will air in the second half of the season, which is expected to commence in late March or early April on Syfy.
Check out the full interview — in which he talks mainly about his upcoming role on Smallville — with Shanks at TV Guide Magazine. And don’t miss this week’s brand new episode of Stargate Universe Friday at 9 p.m. (8 Central)! SGU airs Fridays at 10 p.m. on SPACE in Canada, and Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Sky1 in the U.K.
Always good to see Shanks return. Sounds good!
Brilliant news! It’s always a joy and a pleasure for me to see the original cast members of Stargate SG-1 appearing in SGU! Cannot wait to see this episode!
nice one! i love SGU, but I know that some people aren’t that into it. I think the creators are doing a smart thing bringing back the old cast, to keep fans watching as the show progresses. I reckon SGU episodes keep getting better!! Looking forward to SPACE!!
Shanks *and* RDA? Awesome!
Jimmy007 sadly I am one of those people who watches SGU only because I am a big big Stargate fan :D So I am extremely happy that Daniel and Jack will be back, if only in SGU!!!
@Gaia:
I’m feeling exactly the same as you at the moment… sgu just ain’t doing it for me :(
I like how they keep the old crew visible, yet focus on the new crew. I think it’s a good balance. However, I think it would be a better balance in they threw McKay or Sheppard into the bunch occasionally.
Sounds great, so long as they don’t spend the whole episode just talking about how their feelings were hurt by the loss of their pet dog as a kid or some rubbish like most the episodes so far have been full of (with slow, irritating, piano music playing softly in the background).
It’s funny how they have to keep bringing in the likes of Shanks and Anderson to keep people watching. Screams of desperation and that they just don’t have a good enough main cast (excluding Robert C of course). When Atlantis had it’s first season I can only remember Shanks and Anderson in the pilot Rising.
Sounds good. They are definitely bringing back SG1 characters to keep old fans interested. So far it seems so slow. Too many episodes when pretty much nothing happens, just people talking and talking and sometimes yelling at eachother. Looking forward to seeing Daniel and Jack again though. I wish they would get around to doing the SG1 movie.
I’m absolutely loving SGU and it’s great to see SG1 members making cameos. As for people saying it’s ‘an act of desperation’, that’s hogwash! These episodes were filmed – let alone written – over 6 months ago! They had no idea what sort of ratings the show would be getting. Here’s hoping SGU continues to get even better :D
@seanski87 Hogwash my ass. It’s more than obvious that they put Carter and Oneill in the season opener to make the series blend in with the other series. It’s also obvious that they failed. What good is seeing carter for 10 seconds standing on the bridge of a spaceship and then not seeing her at all anymore. Same goes for General Oneill although they had him suddenly pop up on two episodes so far. These people are major icons in the Stargate ‘universe’ yet get no important participation. In my opinion it is a disgrace. They’d better left them out… Read more »
After that they need to add Teal’c in some way.Still good to hear maybe it’ll juice this show up, i like seeing SG-1 and SGA characters together and this will been good too.
Odd. I don’t recall that many members of the SG1 team guest starring in Atlantis that much in the start of its run. There was: “Rising 1&2,” “Home,” “the one where Weir is infected with nanites (forgot the episode name),” “The Return 1&2,” and maybe a few I forgot to mention. Oh, “Submersion” where McKay hallucinates about Carter. That was a good one. Look, my point is, SGU is pulling the “SG1 card” so much because I think it knows it can’t stand strong on its own. The ratings are only high now because of 2 reasons: those that’re wondering… Read more »
It’s a natural bridge to the established franchise, in my opinion. In its first season Atlantis had SG-1 guest stars (or cameos) in “Rising,” “Home,” and “Letters From Pegasus.”
I suspect that we’re seeing more of Jack because the connection to Earth and the question of “How much are we going to obey Homeworld Command and the I.O.A.” is an on-going story arc. I wouldn’t expect a more episodic show like Atlantis to present as much opportunity for crossover, especially when a theme of the first season was “cut off from Earth.”
It is funny though how in the Atlantis series they were, like you said, ‘cut off from earth’ yet in SGU they’re continuously in contact with earth even though they are like a million times further away then Pegasus was from earth. When you think about it the premises of the two shows are rather similar. Stuck in ancient city in another galaxy with no way to go home, stuck in ancient spaceship in another universe with no way to go home. Hmmmm… Anywayz, I’d like to see RDA actually have a serious presence in an episode and put some… Read more »
Having part of the old crew around is some what of a good idea as long as they play a key role in an episode… say MCkay comes in using one of the stones and gets stuck in that body on the ship and has to solve the problem to fix the stones and also deal with a major malfunction on the ship. The show needs some of his humor…
Sounds like a plan to me. As far as I’m concerned he can get stuck there for more than one episode. :P
I love stargate sg-1 never was able to get used to atlantis and haven’t seen much on SGU yet… Sigh just have to miss the gorigious Dr Jackson to much lol. Love the interaction between him and jack such talent actors MS and RDA. Love them love them love them WHOO there back lol.
Strange how the SGA characters seemed to have disappeared into oblivion. No mention of any of them appearing in SGU. I could understand RDA and MS making a cameo appearance in Rising but after that they weren’t needed at all. The same with SGU, its just another attempt to grab at ratings and keep older fans watching but SGU needs more than SG1 guest stars to keep SGU afloat.
Finally, some good news about SGU which I was beginning to call Battlestar Destiny. There’s no denying the similiarities between the two series and the glaring differences between SGU and it’s excellent predecessors.
