Stargate Atlantis receives Emmy nomination

Stargate Atlantis has returned to the Emmy ballot this year, nominated for Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Dramatic Underscore) by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The Season Two episode “Grace Under Pressure” will compete for Stargate against Showtime’s Masters Of Horror, HBO’s Rome, WB’s Supernatural, and FOX’s 24.

Atlantis‘s SCI FI Friday partner Battlestar Galactica picked up three nominations for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, though it was shut out from the major awards for which fans and the network had been campaigning.

Galactica was recognized in the Outstanding Single-Camera Sound Mixing For A Series category (“Scattered”), the Outstanding Costumes For A Series category (“Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2”), and the traditionally sci-fi friendly Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series category (“Resurrection Ship, Part 2”).

Though three Emmy nominations is something to be proud of, it is a particularly painful year for science fiction fans, many of whom believed that the critically acclaimed and highly rated Battlestar Galactica had the best chance of any genre series in years (or decades) of picking up a major award — or at least nomination — such as Outstanding Lead Actor (Edward James Olmos), Outstanding Lead Actress (Mary McDonnell), or the grand daddy of them all: Outstanding Drama Series.

Network genre favorite Lost — last year’s Best Drama — failed to earn another nomination in that category. The series received nine nominations, including those for Outstanding Directing (“Live Together, Die Alone”), Outstanding Writing (“The 23rd Psalm”), and Outstanding Guest Actor (Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond).

SCI FI tied its 2005 nominations list, with a total of seven nods for its original programming. Other nominations include Outstanding Main Title Design (The Triangle), and Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special (both “Mammoth” and The Triangle).

Stargate Atlantis received two nominations in 2005, but did not take home the trophy for either Outstanding Special Effects For A Series or Outstanding Main Title Theme Music (story).

The 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on Sunday, August 27 at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBC. Read the complete list of nominations at Emmys.com.
