Dark Matter Season Four Almost Happened — With A Stargate Crossover

Syfy may have cancelled Dark Matter, but last month revival efforts made some significant headway before the final nail went into the coffin — and with an unexpected partner.

Series creator and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi revealed on his blog this week that Dark Matter nearly found a home on the recently launched Stargate Command subscription platform. Mallozzi noted that preliminary discussions were underway with MGM to produce a fourth season of his hit science fiction series — with the intention of it streaming on the digital service alongside Stargate Origins.

The move would have unified two passionate and active fanbases — but there’s more. Talks were not only to share the distribution platform but also to produce a Stargate / Dark Matter crossover event of some kind.

While hesitant to reveal specific details, Mallozzi said that such a move would “rev up the fanbase in advance of further original Stargate programming” in addition to resolving Dark Matter‘s own third season cliffhanger. It is not clear how the two universes might have interacted, or if MGM would have had additional plans for Dark Matter beyond a fourth season.

Ultimately, Mallozzi said, the idea was scuttled by contractual difficulties and time-based challenges, preventing this “sci-fi crossover for the ages” from gracing our screens. While we’re left to ponder what could have been, Mallozzi thanked MGM for taking the initiative, and went on to tease a video interview he shot this week for Stargate Command.

Dark Matter was initially cancelled by Syfy Channel on September 1. Efforts to continue the story some other way — fronted by Mallozzi himself — were declared dead later that month.
