Currie returns in ‘Gemini’

With Season Eight’s “Gemini” having aired to high praise from fans, Patrick Currie tells GateWorld what he thinks about his character’s fate. Beware of big spoilers for Season Eight’s “Gemini” in this report!

As with many villains on Stargate, we rarely witness their demise as it occurs … most likely to leave the door cracked open for their possible return. But what of the Replicator, Fifth? There’s always a chance for a resurrection, Currie told GateWorld in an interview. “I think they can bring him back if they want to. He is a Replicator [after all].”

RepliCarter secretly communicates with Fifth via a subspace link. From “Gemini.”

Fifth had the potential to be an antagonist who could carry on for several more seasons. Instead, the producers sounded his death knell in orbit of Alpha Site at the end of “Gemini.” Does Currie feel his character was short-changed? “I like to hold out hope that it’s never over,” he said. “And if that is where it ends, I can’t say I feel cheated. I did get to bring him to life in three episodes (one being the two-parter, “New Order”) and we did get to explore a full relationship with Carter.”

Not just one Carter, but two of them! “I think it would be exciting to explore that relationship further with him and RepliCarter now and get to see where that goes — play him really evil and have them work together to come back,” Currie said. “But they really have to focus on their core cast, and I understand that. Fifth was a great character to give Samantha, and Amanda, some acting challenges.

“I would like to see him come back if they can figure out a way to do that that’s believable.”

Fifth’s former companions crowd around him before the time dilation device activates. From “Unnatural Selection.”

Currie also speculated as to the abrupt disappearance of his five fellow human Replicator brethren (encountered in “Unnatural Selection”). Were they sapped down a black hole, did they escape, or did they disappear by other means? Currie suggests that Fifth may have been responsible for their destruction. “I think they’re gone,” Currie said. “You know, he set the time dilation device and he had a millisecond on them. I think when he turned that machine off he just exploded and took them all out. He’s so threatened in that last moment when they’re all crowding around him in ‘Unnatural Selection’ when the time is slowed down.”

Fans in the London area will soon have a chance to meet “Fifth” face-to-face. “I’m actually going to be doing a Stargate convention in February in London, England, somewhere in Heathrow,” Currie said. “It’s a Wolf production. So I’m doing that for two or three days in February. I’m really excited.”

All-new episodes of Stargate SG-1 continue every Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific on The SCI FI Channel!
