Cox releases new album

Who would have imagined that the bane of Mars, RoboCop and Stargate Command is actually the nicest guy when the cameras aren’t rolling?

Ronny Cox, known to Stargate fans as Senator/Vice President Robert Kinsey has just launched his latest Southwestern folk album entitled “How I Love Them Old Songs: Ronny Cox Sings Mickey Newbury.”

In the album, Ronny pays tribute to Newbury, his late friend. Describing him as “the great Texas songwriter,” Ronny uses this album to not only sing Mickey’s songs, but to channel the spirit of his friend’s music to a new generation of listeners.

“I have been singing Mickey Newbury songs for the last 30-odd years,” Cox said in a press release. “When we became friends about 15 years ago, that’s when the songs took on an even deeper meaning for me.”

In addition to Newbury classics, Ronny has included two of his own songs in the album. One is “On the Road with Jack,” which delves into the CDs producer, Jack Williams.

The other is a particularly poignant piece called “Catherine,” named after Ronny’s granddaughter. His beloved wife Mary, who passed away late last year, suggested that the song be with the album. “She felt it was a tribute to the human spirit and of courage,” Cox said.

Stargate fans worldwide have experienced Ronny’s music, and he has been nothing but appreciative of their overwhelming support. “I’m not using hyperbole here at all,” he told GateWorld in 2005. “They were the best fans for the music that I had ever encountered. They got every nuance of every song, they sat on the edge of their seat …

“The Stargate fans have just been wonderful. They’re so supportive of my music. It’s been really gratifying to do that.” One of Ronny’s songs, “Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled,” can be heard at the end of our video interview.
