Hewlett returns in ‘The Last Man’

Beware SPOILERS for Season Four of Stargate Atlantis in the report below!

The season finale to Stargate Atlantis is just around the corner, and information regarding this “tearjerker” is tightly guarded. GateWorld got the chance to catch up with Kate Hewlett (“Jeannie Miller”), real-life sister of star David Hewlett, who was recently revealed to be a guest star in the episode.

“Well it’s sort of a ‘blink and you’ll miss me,’” Hewlett told us. “There’s a little montage and I’m in it. That’s basically it. But it’s a great episode. Very exciting episode. And David’s got lots to do, and he’s really good.”

In “The Last Man,” Sheppard returns to Atlantis after a mission and finds the city abandoned, all systems dead — and instead of ocean, sand dunes as far as the eye can see. Photos on Joseph Mallozzi’s blog revealed an aged Rodney McKay.

Whether or not this cameo appearance has to do with the first episode in Season Five has not been revealed. “I don’t think so,” Kate said. “That depends, actually. I don’t know. I hope so. Let’s plant that seed! … It’s more of a flashback. But it could relate to other episodes … I’m being mysterious. Am I not mysterious?”

Hewlett has been busy penning theatre plays back in her Toronto, Ontario home. Her most recent work, Humans Anonymous, has met with success. Now with one foot entrenched in each form of entertainment, we asked Kate if she preferred theatre work over film and television.

“I would’ve said ‘Yes’ about three years ago,” Kate told GateWorld, “but now I would say I actually prefer film and television. I’m more comfortable. I don’t know when that happened, but at some point I became more comfortable on a film set than on stage. I love stage, and it’s different.

“The stage work that I do now is mostly collective or things that I’ve written, different kinds of creations. I’m working on a play right now with Unspun Theatre, which is an amazing company. Five of us wrote it together. It’s a very, very theatrical piece. I play five different characters in one hour. That kind of thing you can’t really do in film.

“I don’t think I’ll ever stop doing theatre but as far as just straight theatre goes I would rather do a movie than a play.”

“The Last Man” will premiere March 7, 2008 on the SCI FI Channel in the United States. Stay tuned to GateWorld for a brand new audio interview with Kate Hewlett in the coming days! Catch up with Kate herself on her personal blog.
