Atlantis Season Five premieres in U.S. syndication this week

The final season of Stargate Atlantis is headed for the syndication market in the United States, airing on local broadcast stations all over the country starting this week!  “Search and Rescue” will premiere in most cities during the weekend of September 19 and 20.

Season Five brought more changes to the show’s cast, including a new expedition commander in Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo).  Jewel Staite (“Jennifer Keller”) also went from recurring to a full-time cast member.

The season tied up some long-standing story arcs for the series, while also introducing new villains and new problems for the Atlantis team.  In the big mid-season two-parter, Michael Shanks guest stars as Dr. Daniel Jackson.

The production team had intended on continuing on to a sixth season, but the studio and network instead decided to end the series and send it to direct-to-DVD movies — the first of which is still waiting to be produced.

The Stargate franchise has dominated the drama category in syndication for the past 11 years.  We assume that Stargate Universe will follow SGA and make its syndication bow next year — though there is no official word from MGM yet.

Check your local listings to find out when and where Stargate Atlantis airs in your town. Broadcasters typically air the show on Saturday and/or Sunday.  You can find the complete syndication schedule for the 2009-2010 season exclusively at GateWorld!

  • SGA could've easily gone on for a few more seasons. I will be royally pissed off if they don't make any Atlantis movies after having cancelled the series to make room for "SG: 90210".

  • After seeing all the Dragon Con videos of the SGA actors it makes me miss them even more and I can never see myself caring about the new SGU cast the way I fell in love with the SGA characters. SGA had so much more potential and an amazing cast with so much chemistry, what a waste. The SGU cast and storyline line leaves me cold in comparison.

  • Watching the Atlantis episodes just makes me miss the show even more. I still can't believe that Atlantis was cancelled for such a poor substitute as Stargate Universe: 90210. Especially after the less than classy story lines I've read about.

  • OMG has my time machine finally started working or is the whole SG-90210 coming back to haunt me.
Seriously I tire of reading the same things over and over again, am I glad that Atlantis has ended, about 50-50 if I completely honest, towards the end it was pretty pathetic, and the chemistry blackhawlk is talking of and the classy storylines that rsharpe is mentioning well.. was i watching a different show all these years and not even noticing? lol
imo there was nothing classy about atlantis, not with Shep always trying to 'kirk' the hot woman of the week, and yet ppl moan about the increase of sex in the new show, colour me confused lol

  • wow people still think SGU is gonna by 90210? Jeez, I guess you haven't watched any of the trailers or anything...

  • I have watched all the trailers for SGU and read quite a few of the stories and news releases about the new show. I referred to Atlantis as being classy because I never felt that my intelligence was insulted nor that the female characters were depicted as being less than equal to the male characters. John Shepparpd's character kissed maybe 3 women in the 100 episodes of Atlantis. Not so deserving of the "Kirk" nickname except as a joke by McKay's character. What I and many others are concerned about is the way that body-swapping, with the rape of the person whose body is being used by another person, is going to be a major part of the plot. I don't condone rape as an ongoing plot device to facilitate communication. The next to last episode shown on Atlantis was an the episode
entitled "Vegas". An extremely unusual and very well-done episode that highlighted everything I and many other Atlantis fans enjoyed immensely. If there had been more seasons, I feel that more great episodes like this one would have been written, produced and shown. Instead, Atlantis was cancelled and substituted with what appears to be a poorly conceived show with washed-up actors as the leads and none of the charm that Atlantis possessed.

Well xandder I guess you must have been watching a different show then. Flirting with about 3 women in 5 years is no Kirk, sheesh. We have sex scenes in the very first episode of SGU so there is no comoparison. The SGA cast had buckets of chemistry and its what kept the show going for me. The writers and ptb clearly had already given up on the show from the quality of writing and the lame storylines. I can't see them doing any better with SGU, especially when they have to substitute sex for good writing.

  • I thought the SGA cast had loads and loads of chemistry! They were the definition of TEAM for me.
And that Kirk comment was just silly stuff (by the way originally made by Rodney regarding Sheppard's love for his "ship",not anything to do with romance), Rodney's seen more action than Shep ever did on that show.
I loved SGA and the characters (minus the McKeller)and got a huge amount of enjoyment out of watching it, all 5 seasons.

  • Well I cant speak for others just me, an the more I see old SGA episodes, more& more I miss it. I don’t care if others saw the show badly or didn’t see as classy, ME I think it was AND IS the BEST, the team feel, characters the actors, well just about everything was great, did it have some poor stories of course it did, but the characters an the actors made up for the lacking of creativity of the lack lustre writers who had abandoned the show because of there pet new shinny project Stargate Crapiverse.

The more I watch SGA the more it makes glad I’m not watching SGU, BUT IT MAKES ME SAD that there is no more, SGA is an will always be Stargate for me, Shep & co are the only characters I want to see, I couldn’t care less about the SGU characters they all sound horrible and flawed an selfish and just plain not a very nice bunch of people, to watch a show I need to like the characters or at least some them. Thank god for DVDs an Sky currently re running all season of SGA we are up to season 5.

  • I would have given SGU more support and would have considered watching it if it did not REPLACE SGA. I am now boycotting SGU. SGA is an award winning show with a great fan base, and had more to tell...it could have easily gone on for at least 2 more seasons. The more I watch my SGA DVD's the more I miss the characters and the actors... and the more I detest SGU. They are fools to cancel it. If they expect the Stargate loyal fan base to join the new SGU fan base, they had better come out with SGA movies soon. Otherwise, they just lost a whole bunch of viewers.
