Syfy renews Alphas for a second season

Syfy Channel has renewed Alphas for a second season, TV Line reports, continuing the cable network’s winning streak for summertime scripted dramas.

Season Two will be comprised of 13 episodes, to air in 2012.

The show stars David Strathairn in a new take on the superhero genre, about a group of otherwise ordinary people who possess super-heightened senses, agility, and other abilities. Warren Christie, Malik Yoba, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright, and Azita Ghanizada also star.

Alphas premiered in July with 2.52 million viewers, and has averaged around 2.03 million over eight episodes. With DVR-delayed viewing factored in, the show’s average viewership is up at an impressive 3.3 million, according to TV Line.

Syfy has also given Alphas‘s lead-in Warehouse 13 a fourth season (story), but cancelled Eureka at five seasons (story). The final season of Eureka will air in 2012, meaning the summer line-up could stay largely the same last year. The fate of Haven, airing on Friday nights, is yet to be announced.

Season One of Alphas is still airing Mondays at 10 p.m. (9 Central), and concludes on September 26.

  • Oh, so Alphas gets renewed, and Eureka gets the axe? Makes perfect sense, seeing as Eureka is among their highest rated (and one of the only) sci-fi shows they still have.

    SyFail!

  • Weird, I just don't get the appeal of this show, I still haven't made it through the first episode! I watch a bit get so disinterested and stop, tried to get through it a bunch of times. It just feels like the worst of the superpower genre mixed with the worst of the detective genre. Same with Haven, which I saw half of the first season of, every episode was just so uneventful and completely failed to get my interest. Maybe I'll give them another chance.

  • "a new take on the superhero genre"?

What's new about it? It seems like the same stuff as before. Only worse.

  • Its not a bad show but I really don't feel the love yet. I haven't really been able to connect the way I have with other SyFy/Sci-fi shows like Stargate Battlestar and Farscape. My main complaint so far is like every other episode the villains are simply mirrors of the powers of the heroes and that gets old after a while.

@J-Whitt987 I agree, its nothing new, more like a poor man's heroes/x-men. Not that its bad, but its pretty clear its a blatant rip-off of X-Men, especially in the episode with Summer Glau where she builds a device to detect all Alphas (that was a good ep though).

And yeah, with Monday's being a huge success for SyFy you'd think the network would think to keep that successful formula but we all know at this point that the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing over there.

I guess their newest strategy is to see what show is on the longest and cancel it. "Hey, we haven't canceled anything in a while, what can we cancel?" "Well, we have this new show Alphas in its first season...our other shows all have established audiences..." "Let's cancel our most successful show, EUREKA!" *everyone just looks dumbfounded* "Uh...sir, that's not a very bright idea..." "Make it so, Number one!"

  • I'm not a fan of this show either. I tuned in to watch some of it, but it didnt appeal to me. I also wouldnt count on syfy green lighting a 3rd or 4th season for this series either sense they just cancel everything. Syfy had some good stuff. Renewing stargate and terminator tscc would have been expensive yes, but would have given them some quality shows and a much bigger fan base.

  • @Browncoat1984 I basically agree with what you said about this show. Those are my thoughts and impressions as well, generally.
And also the fact about SyFy is that it's been existing in a bizarro world,so you're right on the money there as well,lol..

  • For me, a show is really good if when I watch the first ten minutes or so, I am hooked and have to continue watching to see what happens. This just hasn't been the case with Alphas. To each his own, I guess.
