Syfy Channel has renewed Alphas for a second season, TV Line reports, continuing the cable network’s winning streak for summertime scripted dramas.
Season Two will be comprised of 13 episodes, to air in 2012.
The show stars David Strathairn in a new take on the superhero genre, about a group of otherwise ordinary people who possess super-heightened senses, agility, and other abilities. Warren Christie, Malik Yoba, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright, and Azita Ghanizada also star.
Alphas premiered in July with 2.52 million viewers, and has averaged around 2.03 million over eight episodes. With DVR-delayed viewing factored in, the show’s average viewership is up at an impressive 3.3 million, according to TV Line.
Syfy has also given Alphas‘s lead-in Warehouse 13 a fourth season (story), but cancelled Eureka at five seasons (story). The final season of Eureka will air in 2012, meaning the summer line-up could stay largely the same last year. The fate of Haven, airing on Friday nights, is yet to be announced.
Season One of Alphas is still airing Mondays at 10 p.m. (9 Central), and concludes on September 26.
Oh, so Alphas gets renewed, and Eureka gets the axe? Makes perfect sense, seeing as Eureka is among their highest rated (and one of the only) sci-fi shows they still have.
SyFail!
Weird, I just don’t get the appeal of this show, I still haven’t made it through the first episode! I watch a bit get so disinterested and stop, tried to get through it a bunch of times. It just feels like the worst of the superpower genre mixed with the worst of the detective genre. Same with Haven, which I saw half of the first season of, every episode was just so uneventful and completely failed to get my interest. Maybe I’ll give them another chance.
“a new take on the superhero genre”?
What’s new about it? It seems like the same stuff as before. Only worse.
@darkthunder Episode 3 and 4 are awesome. You gotta watch.
Its not a bad show but I really don’t feel the love yet. I haven’t really been able to connect the way I have with other SyFy/Sci-fi shows like Stargate Battlestar and Farscape. My main complaint so far is like every other episode the villains are simply mirrors of the powers of the heroes and that gets old after a while. @J-Whitt987 I agree, its nothing new, more like a poor man’s heroes/x-men. Not that its bad, but its pretty clear its a blatant rip-off of X-Men, especially in the episode with Summer Glau where she builds a device to… Read more »
I saw the first episode… or some of it. it didnt do nothing for me!
I’m not a fan of this show either. I tuned in to watch some of it, but it didnt appeal to me. I also wouldnt count on syfy green lighting a 3rd or 4th season for this series either sense they just cancel everything. Syfy had some good stuff. Renewing stargate and terminator tscc would have been expensive yes, but would have given them some quality shows and a much bigger fan base.
@Browncoat1984 I basically agree with what you said about this show. Those are my thoughts and impressions as well, generally.
And also the fact about SyFy is that it’s been existing in a bizarro world,so you’re right on the money there as well,lol..
SG-1 and SGA had more viewers than that and got cancelled.
For me, a show is really good if when I watch the first ten minutes or so, I am hooked and have to continue watching to see what happens. This just hasn’t been the case with Alphas. To each his own, I guess.
i only watch warehouse 13 and eureka now and as soon as both of them are cancelled i wont even tune into to syfy anymore. i will watch sancuary until they axe that one too. syfy sucks
Alphas lost me on the last episode. The guy who’s power was to mess with your brain and make you feel good (not to mention the angel wings made of light) was just uninteresting. Cancel Alphas and use the money to let Eureka run out the story as the writers intended, instead of giving us another rushed SGU-type ending. There are very few science fiction shows I can enjoy with my wife. Alphas isn’t one of them (she saw one episode and won’t watch it with me anymore). After 2012, Warehouse 13 will be the only show for the two… Read more »
Browncoat1984, I think their strategy is to funnel viewers into their newer shows by canceling the ones with large, established fan bases. As asinine as that sounds I can’t think of any other reason why they would just keep kicking us in the groin with these cancellations.
yay! I like Alphas! But i watch it on Space because i’m in Canada. :P
I just can’t get into Alphas, I’m not saying it’s a bad show…just sick of Superhero’s. I only watch Warehouse 13/Eureka/Haven anyways. Too much Paranormal/”Reality”/Superpower shows on for my tastes anymore. I watch USA for my non-scifi drama/comedy thank you.
I’m trying to get into “Alphas”, and it’s *slowly* pulling me in. Not quite as trite as “No Ordinary Family”- and I actually enjoyed watching that clichéd show, doggone it- but “Alphas” needs to be more than just another cop variant show when taking into account the types of superpowers they’re presenting to the viewers to accept. A meta-human family of a police artist was a good fit for another cop procedural when using the characters in “Ordinary”… but I’ve been wishing for a more ‘global’ feel for the types of heroes in shown in “Alphas”. It is always going… Read more »
The best thing about Alphas is the music on the opening credits!Second best is the super hot chick that plays pusher and third the fact it happens in NYC! And honestly I like it better than Warehouse 13 which just isn’t my cup of tea because of all the magic, curse objects and all that jazz. But all ‘n all Alphas is nothing more than downplayed Heroes/cop procedural drama with a lot of elements that just don’t make any sense. Like the fact that a psychiatrist and him alone is a caretaker of such group of individuals, like their abilities are all… Read more »
@medegno51 I kind of agree with you. I’m sort of starting to like it but I don’t like the characters as much as No Ordinary Family. At the same time, it moves a lot faster than No Ordinary Family ever did (they should have had the family working together as a team ala Alphas from day one and that’s what I thought the show would be but that didn’t happen until the end) and I think that’s why its successful.
I am very dogged with these Sci-Fi shows. I’m always willing to give them a try. I wasn’t enamored with SGU, but I watched it all, I hated ENTERPRISE, but I watched it all. This one, I watched one episode, and happily deleted the rest from my DVR. Apart from David Straitharn, no interest.
This show will likely get at least another 2 seasons. It’s got to be really cheap to make. I haven’t watched it much but with a bunch of no-names and little in the way of effects, it probably costs less than 1/5 of what event SG1 had cost (which was the cheapest of the 3 SG series).
It’s weird, I honestly went into this show thinking it would be a rip-off of Heroes. But there is just something about it that keeps me interested.
I quite like the powers and starting to grow to like the characters. In particular I really like Ryan Cartwright’s portrayal of Gary. There’s just something about it.
im sorry but this show is BAD!!! And i really dont know how anyone would like this… its like a fake heroes or falling skys.. i was so hoping we didnt get a second season…
So the SiFi channel dropped Eureka….Warehouse 13 is probably next ONLY because I enjoyed both shows and have never watched Alphas. On the plus side the only supposedly channel devoted to science fiction does have WWE Knockdown or whatever it is…… Bring back the SCIFI channel and lineup. Loser name, crappy lineup, poor management, and indifference to the audience they USED to have.
There is a lot of hate on here toward Alphas, but I think it’s really about Eureka being “dropped” around the same time. A new Christmas episode came out, it wasn’t dropped. It’s not fair to take anger out on Alphas when it’s just a show… I personally think Alphas is a great show. I also like Eureka and Warehouse 13.
I am way late to the party with comments but I’m a fan of Alphas. Here’s the thing…it reminds of the original Star Trek. I watch them regardless of how boring so many often are because I love the characters. Alphas stories were fine, then okay, then I was wishing for just a good ole murder mystery or an A-team, please help me, type story lines but they did not materialize. Nevertheless, how could you not love Gary! And his relationship with Bill. They make the show and I can’t get enough of them. Someone who’s watched every episode had… Read more »
I just finished watching the entire series in one day. So intense though I wish there was at least a straight out memo of the plan of red flag kinda confusing seems like everyone wants the same thing. But the show is amazing Gary is something else and is deffiently why I watched it all. Though the first episode is kinda rocky they automatically jump into the action and very well played by all the actors. And props for making the show seems legitatmally realistic.
