Stargate writers launch Dark Matter sci-fi comic

Two of Stargate‘s team of writers are jumping to a new medium: Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie have penned a 4-issue comic series, Dark Matter, for Dark Horse Comics.  The first installment of the 4-issue limited series is available today!

The writing partners joined Stargate SG-1 in its fourth season back in 2000 and remaining with the franchise through five years of Atlantis and two of Stargate Universe. They also did a stint on the upcoming action series Transporter: The Series.

Here’s the official series description:

A derelict ship floats in space, its troubled crew awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. Their search for answers triggers the vessel’s deadly security system: a relentless android bent on their destruction. Facing threats at every turn, they have to work together to survive a voyage charged with vengeance, redemption, betrayals, and hidden secrets best left unknown.

The book’s art is done by Garry Brown, and colors by Ryan Hill. A 4-page preview of issue #1 is at DarkHorse.com.

Mallozzi said that he is currently pitching Dark Matter as a high-end cable television series.  “I was telling my agent yesterday that we really need to position Dark Matter as the SF equivalent of a Sopranos or a Breaking Bad, a premium series with twists, turns, and serialized potential,” he wrote on his blog.  “Sound crazy?  Well, three years ago, the notion of an ongoing zombie series may have seemed ludicrous to most and yet, now, it’s one of the hottest shows on cables.”

AMC’s zombie series The Walking Dead is one of the highest-rated original dramas on cable, and has been renewed for its third season.  It started as a comic series in 2003.

Pick up Dark Matter issue #1 now at TFAW.com or your local comic shop ($3.50), or download a digital copy from Dark Horse ($2.99)! It’s also available at the iTunes Store (via the Dark Horse app) for your iPad or other digital device.

  • It does sound a bit like how a season 3 SGU could have started. Still hoping for a novel there.
If it gets picked up, Please assume whatever network it goes to will cancel it at the end of season 1 and finish off the story accordingly as I'm sick to death of shows that get cancelled lately and left hanging.

  • Will Robert Carlyle be in this playing Dr Hurry who seems to know more than he is letting on.Honestly i wont be suprised if the suits in hollywood dont even notice its just a name change and give it a green light

  • Kinda like SGU? Other than the lack of stargate, which btw wasn't that present in SGU anyhow, this sounds exactly like SGU,not even kind of.I liked it,but many ppl didn't,so why don't you give up that Event Horizon thematic already, hmm?

  • Yup. With the exception of all the characters, the ship, the tone of the comic book and premise (except for the fact that it's about a bunch of people coming out of stasis) it was exactly like SGU. You guys are brilliant.

  • Yup @SpaceDust.Ironically all of the things you've listed as exceptions are exactly what makes it similar to SGU.Except for the premise and that only maybe, since we don't know enough about it,nor have we ever gotten a chance to find out about the true scope of the SGU premise.

  • Actually, the story in the book isn't that bad, though I don't know how far along it can get in the 4-issue short run that it's supposed to have. One downside though is the rather crude art style employed.

  • Still, I prefer the SGU than all the crap that is now on TV. In the future, Sy-Fy will lose more without SGU, than will earn with it. I want it back ...
