There’s not a lot of intel on the planned Stargate movie trilogy just yet, but that won’t stop us from some speculation and educated guess-work! Let us know your thoughts below, and stick with GateWorld for the official answers as they are announced.
Here’s what we know about the timing of the first in the trilogy: Roland Emmerich (who also directed 1994’s Stargate) will direct the film. He is currently shooting the period drama Stonewall, and is in pre-production on back-to-back sequels to Independence Day (1996) for FOX: “ID Forever Part 1” and “ID Forever Part 2.”
The first of those sequels currently has a release date set for July 1, 2016. (It was originally scheduled for 2015, but last fall the studio pushed it back a full year.)
Directors work on more than one movie at a time, of course, because movies are always at various stages of the production process. Right now Stargate needs a script written (which Emmerich may well be a part of). But generally speaking, for the months where a film is actively shooting, it’s pretty all-consuming for the director.
So we’re guessing that the timeline for Stargate looks something like this: a script by 2015, shooting in 2016, and a release no sooner than the summer of 2017.
That will require no major delays on studio approvals for the script, or in the casting process. It might also require Emmerich to fit in the first new Stargate pic before rolling into active production on “ID Forever Part 2.”
What’s next? Watch for news about that script being completed and submitted to MGM and Warner Bros. Until that first big step is done, setting a target release date will probably have to wait.

My question is "how long will it be?". I have a major problem with so many current films being too long and having too much padding. Man of Steel was 143 minutes, The Wolverine 126 minutes, both of which could have easily been edited to cut out 10-15 minutes without affecting the story. Amazing Spiderman 2 was 146 minutes and suffered from the same problem as The Dark Knight (152 min) that there were too many extra storylines tacked onto the end. Even X Men:DoFP could have been cut to below 2 hours and it wouldn't have harmed the movie at all.
So, can we please have a good, tight plot without any extraneous dream sequences, repetitive battle scenes (how many times do we need to see Smallville/NYC/wherever smashed to pieces building by building?) and long winded expositions, ta?
Will it involve a new O'neill and Daniel.
I would rather it set up new characters than use the current ones.
Will it be a reboot or a new twist on the original ?
Hopefully, MGM relies how bad an idea this is and call it off.

I doubt they will want to delay Independent forever 2 as back to back filming saves money after all. I predict 2018, if this monstrosity isn't cancelled.
I would luv for it to be 2016 or 2017. There are plenty of stories to tell.
I can't understand people who, if they can't get the movie their way, they don't want anyone to get a new movie. I enjoyed the original movie and am looking forward to this version even more than new SG-1 versions. (I own all the Stargate series DVDs and still enjoy all 3 series, so I am a SG-1 series fan.) I want to see how the envisioned Movie plot line carries out. It doesn't have to be the same as the series because, (spoiler alert) Its not "based on a true story". It may be great or it may not but I will judge it based on its own merit.

I think it's good that Stargate is getting a remake but by the sounds of it it will be a sequel to the original SG movie. If that happens I can't get over how much canon will be lost. Just think, if we erase the TV series we are left with a Stargate that can only go to one planet, the goauld don't exist, no cartouche on Abydos, and numerous other things. If they weren't in the first movie then I highly doubt they were part of Emmerich's plan for the original movies so who knows where he'll be going with the story now. But mgm know they have most fans like me in their pockets anyway, I know I'll probably be going to the first screenings just because I have been SG deprived for so long and I assume others feel the same way. And there is the financial sense for doing whatever they like I guess.
